49ers' Robert Saleh reveals why he likes Keion White, expects Bryce Huff back next week

San Francisco 49ers defensive coordinator Robert Saleh addressed the media ahead of Thursday's practice, and the focus immediately turned to the team's newest trade acquisition—former New England Patriots defensive end Keion White. When asked why White may have fallen out of favor in New England, Saleh deflected, saying that's a question for the Patriots. The 49ers liked White's athletic potential and how he might strengthen the team's defensive line depth. "Coming out (of college), elite athlete," Saleh said. "I mean, he's got great length, size, and speed. His short-area quickness, his ability to rush the passer on the inside, again, as another interior pass rusher, adding more depth to that. "He kind of fits in that role we have, similar to [rookie DL] Mykel [Williams], outside, being able to kick inside to be more of a speedy rusher, active body. So, we're looking forward to getting him out there." The 49ers' defense has struggled with injuries this season. The loss of Nick Bosa (ACL) has made generating consistent pressure more difficult. Defensive players like Bryce Huff (hamstring) and Yetur Gross-Matos (knee, hamstring) have also missed time. When asked if the 49ers might make additional moves to bolster the pass rush, Saleh welcomed reinforcements but emphasized the importance of evaluating White and welcoming back returning players. "Huff will be back next week," Saleh said. "Yetur is back. Sam [Okuayinonu] has been providing some production for us, also. Alfred [Collins] has been surging. Mykel [Williams] is continuing to get better. Again, it's a young group that's continuing to evolve and get better. "The adding part, that's more for [GM] John [Lynch] and [head coach] Kyle [Shanahan] to answer, but I'll never say no—if you're listening, John." Saleh also emphasized the importance of creating favorable matchups for the defensive line, something the coaches were unable to accomplish on Sunday against the Houston Texans. "Like I've said before, the ultimate goal of a coach, obviously, is always a free runner," Saleh added. "But the next best thing is a one-on-one with proper leverage. And so, we're going to do our best to put them in those leverages and see where it goes from there."

Tyler Robinson's in-person hearing delayed to January

(The Center Square) – The Utah County in-person hearing scheduled Thursday for Tyler James Robinson, 22 - charged with aggravated murder in the death of conservative leader Charlie Kirk - has been postponed to January. Prosecution and defense agreed to the delay, Utah Fourth Judicial Court Judge Tony Graf Jr. said during a virtual hearing this week. In addition to delaying the in-person hearing, Graf granted a defense motion allowing Robinson to appear in civilian clothing at pretrial hearings. Graf agreed with Robinson's lawyers that the jail attire could prejudice potential jurors. “Mr. Robinson shall be dressed as one presumed innocent,” Graf said. He ordered Robinson's lawyers to provide civilian clothing to their client 72 hours before a hearing. Defense and prosecution previously agreed Robinson could wear civilian clothing at his trial. Robinson participated in Monday's virtual hearing from the Utah County Jail, where he remains incarcerated without bail. Robinson was not seen on camera and was heard only once, when he told Graf, in response to the judge’s question, that he could hear the video conference. Appearing at his bench in his courtroom, Graf said in-person hearings with Robinson present will take place Jan. 16 and 30. Both hearings will start at 1 p.m. Mountain Standard Time at the Utah County Courthouse in Provo, Utah. Robinson is charged with seven counts, six of which are felonies. They include aggravated murder and multiple counts of witness tampering and obstruction of justice. Utah County Attorney Jeff Gray filed a notice with the court that he intends to seek the death penalty if Robinson is convicted of murder. Kirk was shot and killed before a crowd of up to 3,000 people at Utah Valley University. The conservative leader had a home in Scottsdale, Ariz., and his organization, Turning Point USA, is headquartered in Phoenix. Thursday’s hearing was delayed because more time is needed for attorneys to complete discovery, Graf said. That’s the process in which defense and prosecution exchange information so neither side is surprised by the other during a trial. Attorneys also need time to file motions addressing whether non-evidentiary hearings should be conducted virtually, which the prosecution is seeking, the judge said. He added more time is needed for filing motions on whether cameras should be banned in the courtroom. Graf on Monday put some limits on photography and videography. The judge ruled the media could not film or photograph Robinson entering or leaving the courtroom. He also ruled there could be no photos or videos taken of Robinson’s restraints. Graf ruled against Robinson’s defense’s motion that he be allowed to appear in the courtroom without restraints, but ordered that the restraints can’t interfere with Robinson’s ability to take notes or communicate with his lawyers. Other than to identify themselves, prosecution and defense, who participated in the hearing from their offices, didn’t speak at the hearing. Because the matters involved security protocols, Graf held closed hearings on the issues Oct. 24 and 25. Robinson was represented at Monday’s hearing by his lawyers Kathryn “Kathy” Nester, Richard Novak and Staci Visser. The hearing also involved two prosecutors from the Utah County Attorney’s Office: Christopher Ballard and Chad Grunander. Ballard and Grunander are part of a team consisting of six prosecutors, including the office's top attorney, Davis.

"Prince Andrew will now be known as Andrew Mountbatten Windsor," the palace said on Friday, adding that King Charles had started the formal process to strip the titles from his brother, as well as his honours. Pressure has intensified against Andrew following the release of a posthumous memoir by American Australian Virginia Giuffre, who alleged in 2014 that she had been trafficked to Andrew by Epstein and his associate Ghislaine Maxwell as a 17-year-old. Giuffre, who took her own life earlier this year , wrote in the book that she was forced to have sex with Andrew on three separate occasions when she was a teenager. Andrew has always denied any wrongdoing. He agreed to pay Giuffre millions of dollars in 2022 to end her civil sexual assault case against him. Earlier this month, Andrew said that he would give up all titles other than 'prince' , including Duke of York, following "discussions" with Charles. The statement from Buckingham Palace on Friday said a formal notice had now been served on Andrew to surrender the lease of his mansion, Royal Lodge, and he will move to alternative private accommodation. "These censures are deemed necessary, notwithstanding the fact that he continues to deny the allegations against him," the palace said. "Their Majesties wish to make clear that their thoughts and utmost sympathies have been, and will remain with, the victims and survivors of any and all forms of abuse." A palace source said that while Andrew continued to deny the accusations against him, it was clear that there had been serious lapses of judgement. The source said the decision was taken by Charles but that the monarch had the support of the wider family, including heir-to-the-throne Prince William. The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) upheld the World Athletics sanction on Thursday, confirming that the 20-year-old remains ineligible from May 2024, with credit for his provisional suspension served since August 2023. General strike in Alberta possible after back-to-work legislation

Workers across Alberta have begun the process of organizing a general strike after the province legislated an end to the teacher’s strike using the notwithstanding clause, according to the Alberta Federation of Labour. Teachers across the province were on strike from October 6 until the government passed Bill 2 early Tuesday morning, forcing teachers to be back in classrooms the next day. Teachers were calling for better pay, more per-student funding in public education and smaller class sizes. “Although this legislation will end the strike and lift the lockout, it does not end the underfunding and deterioration of teaching and learning conditions—our schools will not be better for it,” the union wrote on their website. The provincial government’s use of the notwithstanding clause quickly sparked outrage across organized labour. On Wednesday afternoon, the Alberta Federation of Labour (AFL) shared findings from one union’s survey of 30,000 workers which found that 90 per cent of its members supported the teachers and 78 per cent were willing to support a general strike in the province. As such, the federation said it would prepare to launch a general strike if necessary. “We will use all the tools at our disposal to make Danielle Smith and the UCP pay the price for attacking teachers, public education and our democratic rights,” AFL president Gil McGowan said in a press conference. “We will mobilize around recall campaigns. If they won’t shrink the size of our classrooms, we’ll shrink the size of their caucus!” The Alberta Teacher’s Association (ATA), at the same time, is preparing to legally challenge the bill, which they called an egregious assault on the collective bargaining rights of teachers and, by extension, all workers. The union said they will likely be supported by organized labour, civil society and ordinary citizens in this fight. “Our message to the government is simple: we are still here,” the ATA wrote on their website. “Our struggle to achieve our legitimate objectives will continue by other means until you deliver the concrete, enforceable and accountable measures to improve classroom conditions.” Public opinion was more supportive of teachers during the strike. An Angus Reid poll released on October 14 showed that 58 per cent of Albertans said their sympathies lay with teachers and a whopping 84 per cent of Albertans agreed that class sizes were too big. Support extends beyond Alberta As the AFL prepares to join teachers in the fight for collective bargaining rights, labour organizations outside the province have also voiced their support for Albertan teachers and their disappointment with Bill 2. Tuesday night, hours after Bill 2 was passed, Canadian Labour Congress president Bea Bruske shared on X (formerly Twitter) that Canadian unions met in an emergency meeting and voted unanimously to push back against the legislation. “The UCP has launched an all-out assault on the Charter rights of Alberta’s workers,” Bruske wrote in a post. “At a time when we should be strengthening our economy and communities, this government has chosen to crush workers’ voices instead.” Bruske joined McGowan at the press conference where he shared that the federation will organize a general strike if necessary. Teachers associations across the country have stood in support of Albertan teachers after the passage of Bill 2. The Canadian Teacher’s Federation (CTF) wrote to Prime Minister Mark Carney asking the federal government to review the applicability of the Notwithstanding Clause when provincial or territorial governments use it to deny citizens fundamental democratic and human rights. “The Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms enshrines the fundamental right to freedom of association and collective bargaining, both essential pillars of democratic labour relations in Canada,” CTF wrote in the letter. “The rights that Canadian workers have fought for over many decades need to be strengthened, especially in times of a shifting global economy and uncertainty, rather than being made optional on a whim.” The labour movement in Alberta and in Canada more broadly are standing up for Alberta teachers and their rights to collective bargaining. “Danielle Smith has awakened a sleeping giant,” AFL president Gil McGowan said. “When she took the unprecedented step of using the Notwithstanding Clause to strip Alberta teachers of their democratic and constitutional rights, she galvanized unions in this province – and in this country – like never before.”

As Republican leaders appear to grow increasingly frustrated with the shutdown of the federal government, Speaker of the House Mike Johnson admitted on Thursday that he is refusing to allow legislation to fund food stamps because he wants to keep “pressure” on the Democratic Party. The federal government has been shut down for 30 days, with little end in sight. Republicans continue to block Democratic attempts to reinstate funding for the Obamacare health insurance premium subsidies and programs like SNAP, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, and the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC). Democrats refuse to vote to open the government without the Obamacare subsidies funding. Oct. 30 (UPI) -- A federal judge in Massachusetts might order the federal government to tap emergency funds to pay for Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits in November. The SNAP program is out of money, which means recipients will start missing their monthly benefits distribution Saturday. U.S. District Judge Indira Talwani said Thursday she is likely to order the Trump administration to use emergency funds to provide SNAP benefits for millions across the country, The Washington Post reported. "Congress has put money in an emergency fund," Talwani said during a Thursday hearing. "It is hard for me to understand how this is not an emergency." Talwani is presiding over a federal case filed by 23 attorneys general and three governors, all of whom Democrats who are demanding Department of Agriculture officials access contingency funds to cover SNAP benefits while the federal government remains shut down. Talwani accused the USDA of engaging in "lawyering" instead of "action" regarding funding SNAP benefits. "We're not going to make everyone drop dead" due to a lack of food, Talwani said, as reported by CNN. Although Talwani said she most likely will order the USDA to access emergency funds to cover SNAP costs, USDA officials said no money is available while the federal government shutdown continues in its 30th day. "Bottom line, the well has run dry," the USDA said in an unattributed statement posted on its newsroom website. "At this time, there will be no benefits issued Nov. 1," the statement continued. "We are approaching an inflection point for Senate Democrats. "They can continue to hold out for healthcare for illegal aliens and gender mutilation procedures or reopen the government so mothers, babies and the most vulnerable among us can receive critical nutrition assistance." The USDA statement refers to Senate Democrats overwhelmingly voting against a House-approved continuing resolution that would fund the federal government through Nov. 21 while Congress continues negotiating a bipartisan budget bill for the 2026 fiscal year, which started Oct. 1. Senate Democrats offered an alternative funding measure that would add $1.5 trillion in spending over the next 10 years to extend tax credits for Affordable Care Act premiums and expand access to Medicaid. Congressional Republicans say the Democrats' demands would fund healthcare for those who are not legally residing in the United States, which Democrats deny. Congressional Republicans also say they are willing to negotiate with Democrats in the 2026 fiscal year budget bill, but not in a temporary funding measure. The current shutdown is the second-longest in the nation's history and is exceeded only by a 35-day shutdown that lasted from Dec. 22, 2018, to Jan. 25, 2019, when Democrats opposed funding to build a wall along the southern border with Mexico.

San Francisco released Parker just one day ago to make room for Dillard. Parker, 30, is a former third-round pick of the Raiders back in 2018. He played out the final year of his four-year rookie contract with the Raiders. He was testing the open market as an unrestricted free agent for the first time in his NFL career in 2022 when he agreed to re-sign with Las Vegas on a one-year, $3.5 million contract. Parker signed another one-year deal with the team for the 2023 season but was released coming out of the preseason and later joined the practice squad. He joined the Niners back in March of last year and signed back with the team after being among their final roster cuts coming out of camp, but they released him a week later. The Falcons signed him to a one-year deal in September but didn’t appear in any games. He’s bounced on and off the 49ers’ practice squad this season. In 2023, Parker appeared in five games for the Raiders, making one start for them.

The seat had fallen vacant following the disqualification of PTI leader Shibli Faraz, the former opposition leader in the Senate, after his conviction in cases related to the May 9, 2023 riots. According to the provincial election commissioner Saeed Gul, who served as the returning officer, polling began at 9:30am and concluded at 4:00pm. A total of 145 KP Assembly members were eligible to vote; however, eight lawmakers, including four from the Awami National Party (ANP), abstained, while one vote was rejected. A minimum of 75 votes was required to secure the seat. After the official results were announced, Zeeshan posted a brief message on Facebook, saying, “Thank God.” Speaking to reporters outside the KP Assembly, the newly elected senator declared, “Our priority is Pakistan’s haqeeqi azadi (true freedom),” echoing PTI founder Imran Khan’s long-standing slogan.
