Is it a good or a bad time to win an election?

There is a popular view that ruling parties lose elections that come on the heels of a major disaster which throws a country into turmoil — much like what Hurricane Melissa has done to Jamaica.Two examples that fit this narrative are: The 1989 election, the first after Hurricane Gilbert in 1988 when Mr Edward Seaga’s Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) Government was trounced by the Michael Manley-led Opposition People’s National Party (PNP); and the 2007 election, the first after Hurricane Dean, that saw the Portia Simpson Miller-led PNP Government losing to Mr Bruce Golding’s JLP.Of course, Dr Andrew Holness defied this risky generalisation by leading his JLP to victory in 2025 after Hurricane Beryl, which notably hurt southern Jamaica in 2024, though it could be argued that the party came close enough to a loss and only managed to win by seven seats, compared with 35 seats in 2020.Hurricane Melissa, coming after the September 3, 2025 election, does not pose the danger of a JLP loss, given that the party has all of five years to overcome the major obstacles posed by this disaster, unless another catastrophe were to face us close to the next election.Still, a Government that has to pick up the pieces after the most catastrophic storm to hit Jamaica could be forgiven for wondering whether it has been dealt a bad hand, because of the monumental work ahead that could last years, even beyond another election.Unfortunately, the Holness-led Administration cannot allow itself the luxury of worrying about what kind of hand it has been dealt. Every member of the Government has to roll up his/her sleeve, take a deep breath, and draw on the deep resolve which is characteristic of Jamaicans to tackle the job.It is a task which is likely to be way more difficult than any other, worsened by the fact that Jamaica has just emerged from a divisive election that ended up with the winning party getting a paltry 11,307 votes more than the losing party.With such a tight margin of victory, the Government will need all its skills to unite and mobilise the entire Jamaica to join the mountainous climb required for the reconstruction project, without which the country will never recover sufficiently from this shock hurricane.At the best of times Jamaicans are dreadfully polarised, some might say fanatical, in their support of party. The timing of the hurricane could not be worse, coming barely over a month after the election, with the wounds of battle still fresh and no chance of national healing.How beautiful it would be to see Dr Holness and Opposition Leader Mark Golding working hand in hand, as examples to the populace, in the way that the PNP’s Mr Damion Crawford and the JLP’s Minister Dana Morris Dixon have agreed to work in education.Once again, we are relieved to see that Dr Holness has appointed a non-political person in Commander Alvin Gayle of the Jamaica Defence Force to serve as director general of the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM). This move, we expect, will give the recovery programme a chance to proceed without the usual intensity of the partisan rancour and put the ugly scars of election vituperation and denigration behind us as a nation.Perhaps, after all, it might be a good time to win an election.

New Delhi, Nov 13 (PTI) The loud sound caused by a bus tyre burst caused panic among locals in southwest Delhi’s Mahipalpur area on Thursday morning, officials said. The Dehi Fire Services said they received a call at 9.19 am informing about a blast-like loud sound heard near Raddison in Mahipalpur, following which they pressed three fire tenders to the spot. Even after extensive checking, the officers found nothing at the spot. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Southwest) Amit Goel said, “The caller was contacted and he informed that while he was on the way to Gurugram, a loud noise was heard. We checked everything and nothing was found.” “During local enquiry, a guard informed that the rear tyre of a DTC bus going towards Dhaula Kuan had burst and the sound came from that,” the DCP said. Dhaka [Bangladesh], November 13 (ANI): The Bangladesh Foreign Ministry on Wednesday summoned Indian Deputy High Commissioner in Dhaka, Pawan Badhe, to formally convey Bangladesh’s serious concern over what they claim is the Indian government allowing former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to interact with the mainstream Indian media, State news agency Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS) reported.“The ministry reportedly conveyed that harbouring such a notorious fugitive currently under trial for committing crimes against humanity and granting her a platform to spew hatred and advocate terrorist acts inside Bangladesh are unhelpful to fostering a constructive bilateral relationship between the two countries,” the BSS report said, quoting sources. “The Indian diplomat was asked to convey to New Delhi Bangladesh’s request to immediately discontinue Hasina’s access to media,” the report said.This development came after former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s interviews with several Western and Indian media outlets, drew criticism from Shafiqul Alam, the official spokesperson for Bangladesh’s Chief Adviser, in a Facebook post on November 11.The Press Club of India had strongly condemned Alam’s comments in which he referred to the reporters who interviewed Hasina as “Western journalists and their Indian bootlicking counterparts”.In a statement issued by the Press Club of India, it noted that the comments were “especially reprehensible” as Alam was a former journalist himself and describing journalists from the media outlets as “bootlicking” was “certainly not expected from a person in a responsible position.”“The official spokesperson of the Chief Adviser of Bangladesh’s government, Shafiqul Alam, has, in a Facebook post on November 11, 2025, referred to reporters from several outlets in India and abroad who recently interviewed former Bangladeshi prime minister Sheikh Hasina as ‘Western journalists and their Indian bootlicking counterparts,'” the statement read.“Such comments are especially reprehensible as Mr Alam is himself a former journalist. To describe professionals from responsible media outlets pursuing a genuine news story as “bootlicking” journalists is certainly not expected from a person in a responsible position,” it added.The Press Club of India also sought an apology from Alam after his statement. Meanwhile, the Ministry of External Affairs had refused to offer any comment on the matter. According to a police official, the fire broke out on Wednesday night at a scrap shop at around 12:40 AM. Two fire vehicles arrived at the scene, controlled the blaze. No casualties were reported in the incident. “Last night, a fire broke out at a scrap shop in Shaheen Nagar around 12:40 a.m. Two fire vehicles arrived at the scene and brought the fire under control. No casualties were reported, and the cause of the fire is still unknown,” a police official said. More details into the incident are awaited. Earlier on November 7, a lorry caught on fire near Shamshabad on the National Highway 44. No casualties were reported. According to officials, the fire broke out early morning on the truck which was travelling from Hyderabad to Bengaluru. Earlier on October 25, a fire broke out at the Indian Container Corporation Limited in Sanath Nagar, Hyderabad.According to a police official, “Today, around 8:40 am, a fire broke out at the Indian Container Corporation Limited. Nine fire vehicles arrived at the scene and controlled the fire. Delhi Red Fort Blast: Delhi Police on Thursday confirmed that Dr Umar Un Nabi was the individual behind the car blast near the Red Fort, following forensic DNA testing that matched his biological sample with that of his mother.Speaking exclusively to ANI, senior police officials stated that the confirmation came after days of meticulous forensic analysis. A senior officer noted that Umar’s leg was found trapped between the steering wheel and the accelerator, indicating he was driving the vehicle at the time of the explosion.“DNA profiling has conclusively identified the deceased as Dr Umar Un Nabi. His sample was matched with his mother’s DNA to establish the relationship,” said the senior Delhi Police officer.The DNA samples of Dr Umar’s mother and brother were collected and sent to the AIIMS forensic laboratory, where they were compared with the remains preserved at Lok Nayak Hospital in Delhi.Dr Sudhir Gupta, Head of Forensic Medicine at AIIMS Delhi, explained that DNA profiling is used in human identification to match an individual to a biological sample by analysing unique sections of their DNA. “DNA profiling is considered a powerful tool in forensic science for identifying suspects or victims, and it also establishes biological relationships,” he added.This is a powerful tool and gold standard in forensic science for identifying suspects, victims, and establishing biological relationships, and it is used in cases like criminal investigations, disaster victim identification, and paternity tests, he saidA total of 21 biological samples were sent to the FSL for examination. A total of 12 deaths inthe Red Fort blast, including the primary suspect. The remaining samples were collected from other victims and biological traces found on nearby damaged vehicles, including cars and e-rickshaws that were affected by the explosion.Sources said the identification of Umar is a major breakthrough in the ongoing probe into the Delhi terror blast case, which left several people dead and triggered panic in the national capital. The blast occurred near Red Fort, a high-security and heritage zone, raising serious security concerns.Investigators are now focusing on tracing the origin of the explosives, possible handlers, and whether the incident was part of a larger conspiracy. The forensic confirmation is expected to help the police link other evidence, including call records, CCTV footage, and material recovered from the vehicle.The Delhi Police Special Cell and central agencies continue to jointly investigate the terror angle behind the incident, with multiple teams deployed across Delhi and neighbouring states to track possible associates of the deceased suspect.A National Security Guard (NSG) team, accompanied by a sniffer dog, carried out an investigation in Khandawali village, Faridabad, where a red Ford EcoSport was seized. The vehicle is suspected to be linked to Dr. Umar Un Nabi, the prime suspect in the Delhi blast case.Earlier, Faridabad Police seized the red EcoSport DL 10 CK 0458, suspected to be linked to Dr Umar Un Nabi, the prime suspect in the Delhi blast case.Sources said that before the car blast on Monday evening, Umar Nabi stayed at a mosque on Asaf Ali Road near Ramlila Maidan. After leaving the mosque, the accused went straight to the Sunehri Masjid parking lot. He parked his car in the parking lot at around 3:19 pm, the sources said, noting that investigative agencies are probing Umars mobile phone and signal history.Delhi Police had earlier issued an alert for the red Ford EcoSport car. The vehicle is registered in the name of Umar Un Nabi. Delhi Police had also shared the cars details with the Uttar Pradesh and Haryana Police, a senior official said.Delhi Police had alerted all police stations, police posts, and border checkpoints in the national capital to look out and search for red colour Ford Eco Sport car, following an investigation which revealed that the suspects had another car in addition to the Hyundai i20.The National Investigation Agency is likely to visit Al-Falah Medical College in Faridabads Dhouj as part of its extensive probe into the Delhi car blast case, involving the involvement of a Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) module.(With ANI inputs)

The US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) conducted a decade-long covert programme to sabotage Afghanistan’s multibillion-dollar heroin trade by secretly dropping modified poppy seeds across the country’s farmlands, a report in The Washington Post revealed. Between 2004 and 2015, the CIA allegedly used British C-130 aircraft for nighttime dispersals of specially bred poppy seeds over Helmand and Nangarhar, Afghanistan’s two main opium-producing provinces. The goal was to weaken the potency of poppies used in heroin production and make the trade unprofitable, as per the report. According to The Washington Post, 14 former US officials confirmed the existence of the classified mission, which was run by the CIA’s Crime and Narcotics Center with post-9/11 counterterrorism funding. One former US official told the paper, “It was out-of-the-box thinking- a nonmilitary solution to a deeply military problem.” A Secret War Over Seeds The modified seeds, while not genetically engineered, were selectively bred to produce poppies with lower alkaloid content- the chemical base for heroin. The CIA hoped that over time, the altered plants would cross-pollinate with native poppies, reducing the overall potency of Afghanistan’s opium crop. The plan was so secretive that even some senior officials in the Pentagon and US State Department were reportedly unaware of it. Former Afghan President Hamid Karzai’s government was also kept in the dark. At the time, Afghanistan was producing nearly 90 percent of the world’s heroin, a trade that funded the Taliban and entrenched corruption within the Afghan state. Was CIA’s Operation Successful? While some insiders described the programme as having “temporary success,” others said it delivered little long-term impact. “The juice wasn’t worth the squeeze,” one participant admitted, pointing to the CIA’s mounting costs and the resilience of Afghanistan’s drug networks. A 2018 report by the US Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction concluded that no American counter-drug initiative- including this one- achieved lasting reductions in poppy cultivation. “It was a clever idea but in the end, Afghanistan grew back stronger- just like the poppy fields,” a former official said as per the report.

However, prolonged periods spent slouching or bending the neck forward to look at screens can gradually distort this alignment. This phenomenon, often called “tech neck” or “gamer’s hunch,” is becoming increasingly common among teenagers. Typical posture-related issues among teens include: • Forward head posture – head protrudes in front of the shoulders. • Rounded shoulders – caused by constant leaning forward. • Upper back stiffness and pain – from poor sitting ergonomics. • Lower back discomfort – due to prolonged sitting without support. • Muscle imbalances – weakened core and overstressed neck muscles.
