(Photo: AFP) Latest News, Sports November 22, 2025 Pogba debuts for Monaco in first game in over two years PARIS, France (AFP) — Paul Pogba made his long-awaited return to competitive football in Monaco’s 4-1 loss at Rennes on Saturday, while Paris Saint-Germain kept hold of top spot in Ligue 1 with a win over Le Havre. Pogba, 32, came on as a late substitute for Monaco in his first appearance in over two years after his career was derailed by injuries, a doping suspension and an extortion case in which he was the victim. “Football isn’t over for me. We’ve worked hard, we’ve waited more than two years to get back, and today it finally happened. Thank God,” said Pogba. The 2018 World Cup winner received a warm ovation from supporters at Roazhon Park when he came on in the 85th minute and again after the final whistle. “It really touched me to see the crowd stand and applaud. I honestly didn’t expect that, so a huge thank you to all the fans who were there today and supported me,” said Pogba. The former Manchester United midfielder failed a drugs test in August 2023 after a match for Juventus and was handed a four-year ban, which was subsequently reduced to 18 months. Nonetheless, the Italian giants terminated his contract last November, bringing to an early end an unhappy second stint in Turin blighted by injuries and other problems. In 2024, his brother Mathias was sentenced to three years in prison, with two years suspended, for his role in a plot to extort 13 million euros ($15.3 million) from Pogba in 2022. But the chance to salvage his career came in the form of Monaco, who decided to take a gamble on him once he became available again following the conclusion of his suspension in March. Monaco have been cautious in their approach to preparing Pogba for a return to competitive action, but coach Sebastien Pocognoli chose to bring on the midfielder with his team trailing by four goals and down to 10 men. Abdelhamid Ait Boudlal and Mahdi Camara struck for Rennes before Denis Zakaria was sent off. Breel Embolo added to the lead and Ludovic Blas scored a penalty, with Monaco pulling one back through Mika Biereth after the introduction of Pogba. “It’s great… the return of Paul Pogba, but I play for Monaco – that’s my team, and I hate losing,” said Pogba. “I’m relieved to be back playing football, the thing I love most in the world. “But there’s still work to do to get back to full fitness, play 90 minutes, and help the team as much as possible,” he added. PSG eased to a 3-0 victory at home to Le Havre courtesy of goals from Lee Kang-in, Joao Neves and Bradley Barcola. Luis Enrique’s side reclaimed first place and their two-point cushion after temporarily dropping behind Marseille and Lens, who edged Strasbourg 1-0 earlier on Saturday. Ismaelo Ganiou grabbed the Lens winner midway through the second half before Strasbourg’s Valentin Barco was sent off. Lens also finished with 10 men as Morgan Guilavogui saw red in stoppage time. Marseille thrashed Nice 5-1 on Friday as Mason Greenwood scored twice to become the league’s top scorer with 10 goals. Latest News, News November 22, 2025 State ministers support local farmers in Douglas Castle with fertilisers and seedlings KINGSTON, Jamaica — Several ministers of state have continued their push to provide local agricultural relief to Jamaicans impacted by Hurricane Melissa with a visit to Douglas Castle, St Ann. The state ministers mobilised privately raised resources to support farmers who suffered significant crop losses in recent weather events. The visit on Friday was led by Member of Parliament for St Ann South Western, Zavia Mayne. He was accompanied by his colleague, Minister of State in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Alando Terrelonge, and Minister of State in the Ministry of National Security and Peace, Juliet Cuthbert-Flynn. During the visit, farmers received fertiliser and seedlings to assist with the restoration of their crops and livelihoods. Looking on is State Minister in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Alando Terrelonge. Mayne emphasised the urgent need for increased support for farming districts across the island, noting that farmers have endured extensive devastation and require targeted assistance to recover. He underscored that agriculture remains a critical pillar of rural and national development, and that protecting farmers’ livelihoods is essential to strengthening the economy. Terrelonge noted that he was pleased to join his colleague in supporting Prime Minister Andrew Holness, who has charged them with assisting in relief efforts in affected communities. A farmer in Douglas Castle, St Ann being presented with a bag of seedling by Minister of State in the Ministry of National Security and Peace, Juliet Cuthbert-Flynn and Minister of State in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Alando Terrelonge. He highlighted the broader importance of safeguarding the country’s food security at a time when global uncertainties continue to affect supply chains. He reinforced that supporting farmers is central to ensuring that Jamaica maintains a stable, reliable source of locally produced food, and that these interventions help build long-term resilience. Cuthbert-Flynn stressed the value of providing consistent support to rural constituencies and commended the collaborative approach taken by government ministries and agencies. She acknowledged the ongoing challenges faced by rural communities and emphasised the need for more initiatives of this nature to bolster local recovery efforts. The distribution exercise in Douglas Castle forms part of the Holness administration’s wider agricultural recovery and resilience programme aimed at restoring productivity, strengthening food security and supporting communities most affected by recent weather systems. Six airlines -Brazil's GOL, Colombia's Avianca, Chile's Latam, Spain's Iberia, Portugal's TAP, and Trinidad's Caribbean- cancelled their flights to Venezuela on November 22, 2025 after the United States warned civil aviation authorities of an ‘increase in military activity’ amid the deployment of US forces in the Caribbean, the airline association told AFP. (Photo: AFP) International News, Latest News November 22, 2025 Six airlines cancel Venezuela flights after US warning CARACAS, Venezuela (AFP) — Six airlines cancelled flights to Venezuela on Saturday, an industry group said, after the US aviation regulator warned of dangers from “heightened military activity” amid a major buildup of American forces in the region. Spain’s Iberia, Portugal’s TAP, Chile’s LATAM, Colombia’s Avianca, Brazil’s GOL and Trinidad and Tobago’s Caribbean Airlines have suspended their flights to the country, said Marisela de Loaiza, president of the Venezuelan Airlines Association (ALAV). She did not specify how long the flight suspensions would last. Panama’s Copa Airlines, Spain’s Air Europa and PlusUltra, Turkish Airlines, and Venezuela’s LASER are continuing to operate flights for now. The US Federal Aviation Administration on Friday urged civilian aircraft in Venezuelan airspace to “exercise caution” due to the “worsening security situation and heightened military activity in or around Venezuela.” “Threats could pose a potential risk to aircraft at all altitudes, including during overflight, the arrival and departure phases of flight, and/or airports and aircraft on the ground,” it said. Washington has sent an aircraft carrier strike group, other Navy warships as well as stealth aircraft to the region — deployments it says are aimed at curbing drug trafficking but which have sparked fears in Caracas that regime change is the goal. A US terrorism designation takes effect Monday for a drug cartel allegedly headed by leftist Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro — a move that some believe could presage military action against his government. Washington’s forces have carried out strikes against more than 20 alleged drug-smuggling vessels in the Caribbean Sea and eastern Pacific Ocean since early September, killing more than 80 people. But the United States has yet to release concrete evidence that the vessels it targeted were used to smuggle drugs or posed a threat to the country, and regional tensions have flared as a result of the campaign and the accompanying military buildup. Dana Morris Dixon making a statement in the Senate on November 21 (JIS photo) Latest News, News November 22, 2025 CXC extends exam timetable for Jamaica KINGSTON, Jamaica — The Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC) has agreed to extend the examination timetable for Jamaica. Minister of Education, Skills, Youth and Information, Senator Dr Dana Morris Dixon, made the announcement in the Senate on November 21. The minister was responding to questions, following a statement on the impact and response to Hurricane Melissa. Morris Dixon also informed that no final decision has been taken on the Primary Exit Profile (PEP) examinations. “In terms of PEP, we are looking at extending the dates for PEP. We have not made a final decision on PEP…but we are going to have to extend the dates there. In terms of CXC, they have already agreed to extend the timetable for exams for Jamaica. So, we will have a longer period, so our exams will be later than the other territories, so that’s already in train,” she added. She further informed that an announcement will soon be made regarding lower CXC fees. “We have been negotiating lower fees for our students; by next week, you will hear more on what the final amount is,” she said. Meanwhile, Senator Morris Dixon said that in recognising the critical threat to students preparing for external examinations, the ministry has adopted targeted strategies. She said discussions are advanced with the Caribbean Examinations Council to determine necessary relief, including adjustments to deadlines and requirements for School-Based Assessments (SBAs) and practical examinations. “We are looking at how we can change the deadlines for those, and there is a lot of flexibility built in. We are also looking at flexibility in syllabus coverage and also cost implications; also, provision of options for students to reduce the number of exams they sit based on their situation,” she said. As it relates to the National Vocational Qualification of Jamaica (NVQ-J), the inister informed that the November sitting has been postponed. She noted that examinations are tentatively rescheduled for February 2026, with a further option in June 2026, to allow students and institutions adequate time to prepare. Turning to City & Guilds, she said the entity has proposed a two-cohort examination model with sittings in June and November 2026, offering increased flexibility for schools in the most severely impacted regions. “We are working with our primary external partners to ease the burden on our children as best as possible,” Morris Dixon said. More than 600 educational institutions sustained damage during the passage of the category five hurricane, which made landfall on October 28. Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Mining, Hon. Floyd Green, viewed hurricane damaged farms on Thursday (November 20) during a field tour in Bonnet District, Guys Hill in St. Catherine, as part of the Ministry’s Hurricane Melissa recovery plan. He was joined on the tour by State Minister, Hon. Franklin Witter; St. Catherine North Eastern Member of Parliament, Hon. Kerensia Morrison; Councillor for the Guys Hill Division, Joseph Johnson and Rural Agricultural Development Authority (RADA) Chief Executive Officer, Garnet Edmondson. The tour culminated with a farmers meeting at the Guys Hill Town Hall, where farmers received irish potato seeds, fertilisers and vegetable seeds. (JIS photo) Latest News, News November 22, 2025 Agriculture ministry to rebuild poultry sector after 1.1 million bird loss KINGSTON, Jamaica — The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Mining has announced a plan for the poultry sector, which was adversely affected during the passage of Hurricane Melissa on October 28. Portfolio Minister Floyd Green disclosed that the ministry’s preliminary assessment showed that over 1.1 million birds have been lost — 458,000 layers and more than 700,000 broiler chickens. In comparison, Green pointed out that the country lost some 300,000 chickens overall from Hurricane Beryl in 2024. He informed that approximately $40 million has been earmarked to revitalise the backyard chicken operations. “We’re going to be purchasing about 100,000 broiler chickens because we want to, as quickly as possible, bring back up the small backyard chicken farmer. You know… before hurricane, we are normally self-sufficient in chicken meat. Our big companies account for about 65 per cent and our small backyard farmers account for 35 per cent of our broiler chicken industry,” he noted. Green was speaking during a farmers meeting in Guys Hill, St Catherine, on Thursday, where farmers received fertilisers, Irish potato seeds and vegetable seeds toward their farming operation. The meeting followed a tour of several farms in the Bonnet District in the parish, where the minister saw the destruction of several chicken coops, as well as small ruminant farmers who were also affected by the hurricane. The agriculture minister noted that in addition to providing the broiler chickens, chicken feed will be supplied, and that there is an infrastructure component where the ministry will rebuild chicken coops. “It doesn’t make sense we give you [chickens], and you don’t have anywhere to put it. Some of you don’t need much help; it is just some material, and you can help yourself. Some of it though, we need to build it back and we’re going to build it back better than it was, so reach out to your RADA (Rural Agricultural Development Authority) officer,” Green advised. He informed that a programme around layer chickens will also be completed as the island’s biggest loss in terms of percentage has been in egg production. “The 458,000 birds that we have lost represent about half of our total layer flock. And you already know, we were having challenges recovering from [Hurricane] Beryl in relation to egg,” he added.
