The Hong Kong Applied Science and Technology Research Institute (ASTRI) was founded by the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region in 2000 with the mission of enhancing Hong Kong’s competitiveness through applied research. ASTRI’s core R&D competence in various areas is grouped under five Technology Divisions: Communications Technologies, Artificial Intelligence and Trust Technologies, Advanced Electronic Components and Systems, IoT Sensing and AI Technologies, and Intelligent Perception and Control Technologies.It is applied across six core areas which are Smart City, Financial Technologies, New Industrialisation and Intelligent Manufacturing, Digital Health, Application Specific Integrated Circuits, and Metaverse.Over the years, ASTRI has nurtured a pool of research, I&T talents and received numerous international awards for its pioneering innovations as well as outstanding business and community contributions. ASTRI has transferred about 1,600 technologies to the industries and has been granted close to 1,200 patents in the Mainland, the United States, and other countries.Job ResponsibilitiesTo support our constant endeavour to position Hong Kong as a world-class smart city and an international hub of innovation and technology, we are seeking qualified professionals to fill the following position(s):Develop and implement next-generation motion control algorithms for ultra-low latency real time controlResearch, design, and optimize adaptive object manipulation algorithms that allow Intelligent Machines to handle objects of varying shapes, sizes, and material propertiesCreate and implement multi-agent cooperative motion manipulation algorithms that leverage vision, haptic and others sensing technologies for collaborative tasksDesign and develop data-driven behavioural modelling techniques to optimize human/machine tasks for efficiency and precisionConduct experiments, simulations, and testing to validate the performance of developed algorithms in real-world scenariosCollaborate with cross-disciplinary teams to integrate algorithms into hardware and software platformsStay updated with the latest advancements in intelligent machines, motion control, computer vision, and machine learning to continuously improve system performancePrepare technical documentation, research papers, and presentations to communicate findings and progressPerform ad hoc research and development duties as assignedJob RequirementsMaster's degree or above in Computer Science, Computer/Electronic/Mechanical/Robotics Engineering, or relevant disciplines with a minimum of 5 years of related experience. Exceptional candidates with less experience may also be consideredAdvanced programming skills in Python, C++, or MATLAB, with experience in at least one robotic framework (e.g., ROS, MoveIt)Proficient in motion control systems, robotic kinematics, and dynamicsHands-on experience in developing machine learning models and integrating them into Intelligent Machines applicationsExpertise in vision, haptic and others sensing technologies such as cameras, robot joints sensors, force/torque sensors, and/or LIDARExperience in multi-agent systems or cooperative robotics is highly preferredFamiliarity with simulation tools (e.g., Gazebo, Issac Sim) and real-world robotic system deploymentKnowledge of deep learning frameworks such as TensorFlow or PyTorch is an advantageRich experience in ITF R&D funding applications, project execution and administration. Experienced in proposal writing for R&D funding applications, including grant proposals and research partnershipsStrong problem-solving skills with the ability to work independently and collaboratively in a research-driven environmentProven track record on handling suppliers and collaborate effectively with multi-disciplinary teamsProficiency in written and spoken EnglishLive ASTRI valuesThe appointment will be on renewable contract terms with a competitive salary and performance-linked variable pay. Fringe benefits include paid leave, medical, insurance coverage and contribution to MPF.
