Our client, the Doherty Institute, in partnership with Fiji’s Ministry of Health and Medical Services and AVI, is seeking a Senior Medical Scientist to strengthen Fiji’s HIV/STI testing and surveillance capacity. This exciting 1-year contract role (with potential extension) will be based in Suva, embedded within the HIV/STI Unit.
You’ll play a key role in decentralising HIV/STI and co-infection diagnostics, building workforce capacity, supporting national quality assurance programs, and contributing to Fiji’s public health response to the HIV outbreak. Key Responsibilities Support HIV/STI Diagnostic Expansion: Implement decentralised testing strategies and new diagnostic algorithms (e. g. 4th Gen HIV, Hep B/C, GeneXpert) across laboratories and SRH sites, including pilot programs. Strengthen Quality Assurance & Surveillance: Develop and implement national QA programs, support data reporting, integration with surveillance systems, and conduct national audits. Capacity Building & Mentoring:
Provide training and mentoring to health and lab personnel, build site-specific test algorithms, and enhance overall lab capacity and capability within the HIV/STI Unit. Stakeholder Engagement & Coordination: Facilitate collaboration with hospitals and stakeholders, coordinate technical workshops, committee meetings, and support partner engagement to drive implementation. Operational & Project Support: Contribute to planning, budgeting, reporting, and manage procurement logistics, stock tracking, and commodity management for HIV/STI diagnostics. The Senior Medical Scientist is required to demonstrate a high level of professionalism and initiative and will work collaboratively with partner organisations nationally and advisers from an international team.
This incumbent is required to be highly organised, communicate effectively with a diverse group of individuals, and set priorities to assist in completion of project activities. This role will be a key representative in Fiji for the work areas under the eLABorate program’s HIV laboratory diagnostics support. This role will be based at the Fiji HIV/ SRH unit.
