About the RoleAs a Shift Manager, you’ll take the lead in driving safe, efficient, and high-quality production during your assigned shift. You’ll manage and support a dedicated team, ensure smooth daily operations, and champion continuous improvement initiatives on the floor. The role involves ensuring safety compliance, managing production teams, and leading continuous improvement initiatives to achieve operational goals. Key ResponsibilitiesSafety Leadership Ensure compliance with JSC’s Health & Safety Policy, the Occupational Health & Safety Act (OHSA), AODA, WHMIS, and Safe Work Standards. Proactively enforce safety policies, procedures, and workplace standards across the shift.
Conduct and document regular safety audits, inspections, and walk-throughs. Lead Job Instruction (JI) audits and ensure team members are properly trained and certified. Oversee plant safety and housekeeping, maintaining vigilance for any hazards or violations. Respond promptly to injuries—administer first aid, complete incident reports, investigate root causes, and recommend corrective actions. Support return-to-work processes in collaboration with the RTW Specialist and HR, including offering accommodations and retraining for employees returning from injury or leave. People Management & Team Development Lead and engage team members through daily shift updates, safety talks, and production meetings to ensure clear and open communication.
Provide day-to-day coaching, mentorship, and performance feedback to team members and team leaders. Conduct and document pre-shift huddles and provide support on performance and expectations. Collaborate closely with other Shift Managers to ensure smooth shift transitions and clear handovers. Maintain accurate and timely payroll records (Ceridian), including timecard approvals and notes. Track daily attendance, follow up on absences, and document conversations with employees. Support employee development through performance reviews, cross-training initiatives, and succession planning. Address interpersonal conflicts professionally and promptly, escalating to HR when necessary.
Participate in progressive discipline processes and HR investigations as required, ensuring timely resolution of workplace issues. Production Oversight & Operational Execution Manage production teams to achieve daily and long-term key performance indicators (KPIs), including OEE, EOL, OTIF, and flow rate. Plan and execute daily production tasks by aligning labor, assigning cross-training opportunities, and prioritizing shift goals. Continuously monitor equipment and line performance, identifying and addressing issues to minimize downtime. Coordinate with Maintenance for both preventative maintenance and immediate repair needs; escalate persistent downtime to the Operations Manager.
Oversee and facilitate efficient changeovers, optimize shift schedules, and realign resources as necessary for productivity. Ensure production targets are communicated clearly to team members and tracked consistently during the shift. Quality Assurance & Continuous Improvement Lead internal Plant and Process Audits to maintain standards for cleanliness, safety, equipment condition, and visual management (LOS boards). Analyze product defects and initiate corrective actions using Non-Conformance Reports. Support or lead investigations into technical issues and implement sustainable solutions to prevent recurrence. Promote and participate in Continuous Improvement (CI) initiatives, including 5S, Kaizen events, 8D, FMEA, root cause analysis, and Lean manufacturing techniques.
Identify workflow inefficiencies, recommend process improvements, and contribute to long-term operational excellence. Ensure compliance with internal procedures and external regulatory standards (ISO, government policies). Drive a culture of continuous improvement by coaching and empowering teams to find and implement solutions.
Required Skills8+ years of hands-on experience in a fast-paced manufacturing environment, ideally within a Lean organizationProven experience leading or supervising teams in a large manufacturing settingStrong understanding of Lean manufacturing principles and “design for manufacturing” conceptsExcellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to engage all levels of the organizationStrong leadership capabilities with a proactive, independent, and solution-oriented mindsetEffective time management, organizational, and planning skillsDemonstrated ability to coach, mentor, and develop team membersProven problem-solving and analytical skills in a production environmentProficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Excel, Word, etc.
