Organization ProfileThe primary mission of Lutheran Church Extension Fund (LCEF) is to provide financial resources and related services for ministry, witness, and outreach of The Lutheran Church – Missouri Synod (LCMS). In so doing it shall raise funds primarily through the issuance of corporate notes and other debt instruments. Its assets shall be used exclusively for the following: To provide financing and services for the acquisition of sites; the construction of facilities; the purchase of buildings and equipment; operating expenses; professional church worker education; the residential housing needs of professional church workers; and other purposes approved by its governing board consistent with the ministry and mission of the Synod under policies approved by the Board of Directors of the Synod.Reporting RelationshipCopywriter reports to the Creative Director.SummaryThe Copywriter will be responsible for crafting compelling, mission-aligned stories and writing functional and clear copy across a variety of marketing channels. Their writing will engage LCMS members, potential customers, church leaders, etc. with precision, empathy and theological accuracy. This role blends creative storytelling with strategic messaging, from long-form feature articles and ministry stories to web copy, social captions and UX microcopy. The ideal candidate is quick to grasp and confidently apply LCEF’s brand voice and Lutheran terminology, with a keen sensitivity to audience tone and context, and thrives in a collaborative, fast-paced environment.Essential Job FunctionsWrite original, on-brand copy for a wide variety of content types: ministry stories, social media, email, websites, ads, video scripts, press releases, brochures, and more.Translate complex ideas (financial, theological, strategic) into accessible, engaging content for specific target audiences.Maintain consistency in brand voice and Lutheran terminology across all channels.Collaborate with designers, marketers, and subject matter experts to ensure alignment between visuals, messaging, and user experience.Embrace and integrate feedback from multiple stakeholders to refine and improve writing.Contribute ideas to brainstorms, concept development and campaign planning to shape messaging direction.Analyze content performance and user feedback to iterate and improve content clarity, engagement, and conversion.Apply SEO and UX writing best practices to digital content to improve visibility and usability.Stay up to date on marketing, copywriting, and cultural trends relevant to LCEF’s mission and audiences.Develop a deep understanding of LCEF’s products, services, and brand to ensure accurate and impactful representation. Education and ExperienceBachelor's degree in creative writing, communications, journalism or related field from an accredited college/university or equivalent work experience.4+ years of professional writing experience (agency, nonprofit, financial or ministry-related experience preferred).Competencies (Knowledge, Skills and Abilities)A member in good standing of an LCMS congregation with an understanding of the mission of the church and LCEF.Excellent writing, grammar and editing skills; produces clean copy with minimal need for revisions.Strong research skills; asks the right questions and probes for clarity to develop accurate, audience-appropriate messaging.Ability to write in a variety of tones and formats, from inspirational storytelling to concise technical writing.Curious and proactive mindset; seeks understanding of LCEF audiences and solutions to write more effectively.Comfortable managing multiple deadlines and priorities in a fast-paced, collaborative environment.Receptive to feedback and committed to continuous improvement.Proficient in Microsoft Office; experience with CMS platforms, project management tools or Adobe Creative Suite is a plus.Experience with SEO best practices and writing for digital platforms.
