We hope that our efforts will ensure that corporations, institutions, and policymakers act in the public interest.About the RoleWe seek a strategic, relationship-driven, and data-informed Development Director to lead and expand our fundraising and donor engagement programs nationwide. This senior leadership role oversees all aspects of fundraising—including major gifts, digital campaigns, foundation partnerships, and stewardship—while aligning philanthropic strategy with our core mission of transparency, equity, and accountability.ResponsibilitiesStrategic Leadership – 30%Develop and execute a comprehensive fundraising plan that supports WHEN Justice’s litigation and advocacy priorities.Establish annual and multi-year revenue goals in collaboration with the Executive Director and Finance team.Foster a culture of innovation, accountability, and cross-functional collaboration within the development function.Advise leadership on emerging trends in philanthropy and identify new opportunities for expansion and sustainability.Fundraising & Donor Engagement – 30%Lead all aspects of donor cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship across individual, foundation, and corporate supporters.Manage a personal portfolio of major donors and prospects, building lasting relationships that drive long-term support.Create personalized giving experiences and recognition programs that reflect WHEN Justice’s legal and policy impact.Partner with program and legal teams on grant proposals, reporting, and funder communications.Campaigns & Communications – 20%Design multi-channel fundraising campaigns that amplify WHEN Justice’s litigation successes and advocacy narratives.Work closely with communications staff to ensure consistent messaging across digital, social, and print media.Oversee donor materials, reports, and events that inspire giving and celebrate impact.Apply analytics and segmentation to drive engagement and optimize campaign performance.Data, Analytics & Budgeting – 10%Track key performance metrics and prepare data-driven reports for leadership and the board.Manage departmental budgeting, forecasting, and CRM data systems.Ensure compliance with nonprofit fundraising regulations and uphold donor intent.Team Leadership & Culture – 10%Supervise and mentor the development team, fostering a supportive and high-performing remote environment.Promote collaboration, shared accountability, and professional growth.Integrate fundraising strategy across departments to strengthen organizational impact.QualificationsMinimum RequirementsBachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experienceMinimum 7 years of progressive fundraising experience in nonprofit or advocacy contextsDemonstrated success managing major gifts and multi-channel fundraising programsExperience supervising teams and leading cross-departmental initiatives in a remote environmentExcellent written and verbal communication skills with strong relationship management abilitiesProficiency in donor management systems such as Salesforce or HubSpotData-driven approach to fundraising strategy and campaign planningPreferred QualificationsMaster’s degree10 years of relevant experience, ideally within legal advocacy, environmental, or consumer protection organizationsExperience with foundation development, planned giving, or mission-aligned corporate partnershipsFamiliarity with analytics tools, digital fundraising platforms, and creative systems such as Adobe Creative SuitePassion for environmental justice, public health, and consumer protectionPay range and compensation packageThis position is fully remote within the United States, with flexibility across time zones. Occasional travel may be required for donor meetings, conferences, or team gatherings.
