Job DescriptionWe now have an exciting opportunity for an ambitious and motivated Books Commissioning Editor to join our Academic Content department to commission high-quality books, across a range of Taylor & Francis subject areas in Humanities.The Commissioning Editor will pro-actively grow and manage a list of academic research books, building relationships with academic editors and learned society contacts as well as realising opportunities for growth through organic development and acquisitions. The editor will develop a strong commercial strategy for the program in line with Taylor & Francis’ overall objectives, will grow the book offerings in these key subject areas, and will be aware of competitor strengths and weaknesses to take advantage of opportunities in the market.The successful applicant should possess strong commercial awareness, exhibit an aptitude for highly organised teamwork, a collegiate attitude towards the sharing of projects and ideas. The ability to work towards demanding targets is essential.Closing date for applications: Monday 24th November 2025What You Will Be DoingMeeting annual commissioning and revenue goals, commissioning new books across a range of subject areas that respond to market needsWork alongside editorial assistants to ensure that manuscripts are submitted on time and handed over to production on schedule, and that publication dates are metIdentifying market needs and recruiting authors to write books that meet said needs; evaluating book proposals for quality, content and market viabilityProposing quality projects to publishing committee, including compiling an internal proposal document and preliminary financial costingNegotiating contract terms with authors and/or their representatives to arrive at favourable agreementsIn consultation with your Publisher, working closely with the Editorial team to develop and maintain strategy for the specific list as a part of the overall strategy of the departmentClose liaison with authors, editorial, production, marketing and sales colleagues to ensure that goals are metOther tasks as necessary and specific to the role.QualificationsWhat we’re looking for:Experience in academic publishing and familiarity with all aspects of the book publishing processA self-starter who can work quickly and independently, while liaising effectively with team members globallyA self-motivated, proactive individual with a proven track record of high performance and meeting personal targetsExcellent written and verbal communication skills in written and spoken English and MandarinHighly organised with the ability to proactively prioritise your workload and to work to (often competing) deadlinesAttention to detail and delivery of high quality resultsA financial focus and ability to budget and analyse financial dataExperience of commissioning and negotiating contract terms is highly desirableA positive and proactive approach to problem solving both in daily tasks and more complex trouble-shootingA high level of computer literacy (including MS Office suites and work-related software)Additional InformationLocation:This role will be based in Beijing, and you should have the right to work and live in Beijing, China.We believe that great things happen when people connect face-to-face.
