Today, we’re a team of nearly 500 people, including 150 talented engineers, working together from Paris, Amsterdam, Copenhagen, and Berlin.The Banking team at ShineThe Banking domain is responsible for accounts, payments, cards, ledger, compliance flows, and the architecture that powers all financial operations. The mission: build a single, unified banking experience across four markets, on a new in-house core banking engine.We now seek an Engineering Director who combines technical depth, organisational leadership, and regulated-environment judgment — someone able to drive migration, scale teams, and deliver safely in a high-complexity environment.Your role as Engineering Director of BankingReporting to the VP of Engineering, you will be accountable for the technical integrity, regulatory readiness, and long-term scalability of Shine’s banking systems.You will:Lead and mentor 7+ Engineering Managers and 40+ engineers across multiple locationsOwn the engineering vision for our core banking domain: ledger, posting engine, payments orchestration, cards, KYC/AML, reconciliation, and market-specific adaptersGuide architectural decisions and challenge trade-offs with senior engineers and Staff EngineersPartner closely with Product, Design, Compliance, Risk, and Operations to ensure alignment across marketsStrengthen engineering excellence: design principles, reliability, observability, incident response, and secure-by-design practicesBuild a cohesive, inclusive culture across previously independent banking stacksEnsure Shine is audit-ready at all times (PSD2, SCA, AML/KYC, SEPA, local regulators)Your first 12 months:You will focus on:Building trust with the Banking teams and engineering leadershipDelivering a high-confidence migration plan from legacy BaaS systems to the new core banking engineEstablishing clear architectural guidelines, domain boundaries, and integration patternsAligning with Compliance and Risk to ensure regulatory correctness across all marketsLaunching the new banking engine in our core marketsImproving operational excellence (SLOs, incident management, on-call, reliability culture)Driving transparency, alignment, and crisp execution across EMs and cross-functional partnersLeading the engineering dimension of the merger between Banking and Accounting/InvoicesAbout YouYou are a servant leader with strong engineering judgement, able to build clarity, challenge assumptions, and guide teams through ambiguity in a regulated environment.Must-have ExperienceSignificant leadership experience in regulated fintech, banking, or financial infrastructureDirect ownership of core financial systems such as ledger, posting engines, payments orchestration, KYC/AML, reconciliation, or audit frameworksArchitectural leadership in cloud-native, event-driven, highly reliable systemsExperience leading platform migrations, system consolidation, or large-scale technical transformationStrong ability to mentor, challenge, and grow Engineering Managers, Staff Engineers, and senior ICsExperience leading multi-country product and engineering deliveryFluent English; strong French is a major advantageDemonstrated ability to build inclusive, high-performing, distributed engineering organisationsNice to haveExperience with multi-market financial productsPrior exposure to European regulatory frameworks (PSD2, SCA, AML/KYC, SEPA, reporting)Experience working with accounting, invoicing, or adjacent financial products📍Job located in Paris or Berlin with 2 remote days per week.Our recruitment process1️⃣ Screening call with Talent Acquisition – motivations, leadership style, adaptability2️⃣ Deep dive with VP Engineering3️⃣ Interview with VP Product4️⃣ Case session – strategy, architecture, migration, team leadership5️⃣ Team Interview with Head of Design, Engineering Managers, Staff Engineers6️⃣ Cultural Interview (personality and logical assessment)What’s In It For You?Compensation: Competitive salary depending on experience and location.Remote Work Culture: Work from our Berlin or Paris office, with possibility of remote working days.Scale-Up Impact: Join a high-growth environment with ~500 passionate people across Europe and multiple acquisitions; your work has direct, measurable impact.Events and Travels : Regular team events, international trips, and cross-European networking opportunities ✨Equal Opportunity EmployerWe follow the principle of equal treatment to consider all job applicants and do not discriminate based on their gender, sexual orientation, color, racial or ethnic origin, religion, disability, etc. as per applicable law.
