The top salary range for this position currently reaches $121,250.56, PLUS, an excellent benefits package! PLEASE APPLY IMMEDIATELY.**Under general supervision, the Engineering Technician performs highly skilled drafting work and engineering computations for the Utilities or Public Works Department; performs office and field technical civil engineering tasks; and performs other related duties as assigned.Supervision Received And ExercisedSupervision is provided by the Director of Public Works and Utilities or their designee.Essential job functions may include, but are not limited to, the following: (These functions may not be present in all positions in this classification. Management reserves the right to add, modify, change, or rescind work assignments as needed.)Manages capital improvement projects; maps geographic information using current industry standard software; updates and reproduces maps, blueprints, and other drawings; prepares and maintains correspondence and reports; researches, compiles, and analyzes data for various programs and projects; catalogs and files water, sewer, and storm drain plans for ready reference; records connection numbers, house numbers, and service locations from completed service orders; performs field data collection; conducts field and office plan checks; reviews plans to ensure compliance with all applicable regulations and ensures specific property conditions have been considered; retrieves information and records for staff members; keeps abreast of current engineering principles, practices, technology, and regulations that apply to engineering projects; participates as a member on interdepartmental and intradepartmental teams and committees as assigned; attends division and department meetings; provides staff technical assistance in the use and maintenance of computers and computer software; and performs other related duties as assigned. Maintains regular attendance.Education And/or ExperienceTo qualify for this classification, an individual must possess any combination of experience and education that would likely produce the required knowledge and abilities, and enable the individual to successfully perform the essential job functions of the position. A typical combination is:High School Diploma or GED equivalent and two years of college in a closely related field are required. Two years of recognized drafting and field technical civil engineering experience are also required.Knowledge OfPrinciples, methods, materials, and equipment used in the design of water and wastewater facilities; principles of mapping and geographic information system technology using current industry standard software; basic computer use and engineering computer applications; nomenclature, symbols, methods, practices, and instruments used in engineering, drafting, mapping and surveying; City codes and ordinances, and various rules and regulations affecting department operations; mathematics as applied to technical engineering work including algebra, geometry, and trigonometry.Ability ToRead, interpret, and understand manufacturer specifications and regulations applicable to the design and construction of water, wastewater, and public conveyance facilities; use engineering instruments and engineering computer applications currently in use by the City; interpret field notes and apply them in the performance of routine drafting work; make mathematical and technical computations; read, interpret, and/or prepare technical, reports, diagrams, maps, drawings, and specifications; exercise tact and diplomacy relative to public inquiries and requests; maintain department records; operate office and other equipment; understand and carry out oral and written directions; and communicate effectively orally and in writing.Possession of and ability to maintain a valid Class "C" California Driver's License is required.Physical DemandsAbility to lift up to 15 pounds is required. Position requires prolonged sitting, standing, walking, reaching, twisting, turning, kneeling, bending, squatting, crouching and stooping in the performance of daily office activities. The position also requires grasping, repetitive hand movement, and fine coordination in retrieving and entering data using a computer keyboard. Additionally, the position requires near and far vision in reading work related documents and using the computer, and acute hearing is required when providing phone and personal service.Work EnvironmentEmployee generally works in a standard office setting and outdoors. Employee may travel to different locations and may be exposed to inclement weather conditions, noise, vibration, or dust or potentially hazardous chemicals. Noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to high and the employee may occasionally be exposed to loud talking and interruptions from telephones and/or members of the public. The nature of the work also requires incumbents to drive motorized vehicles and work in heavy vehicle traffic conditions.NoteThe duties, skills, and demands described here are representative of those that must be met to successfully perform the essential functions of the job.
