Job DetailsDescriptionJob Summary/Overall ObjectivesThe Educator is responsible and accountable for the provision of education to enhance the culture of safety, quality of patient care and professional development for the nursing department. The Educator is responsible for orientation, training, competency, validation, and continuing education of the nursing staff. Utilizing adult learning principles, the Educator demonstrates knowledge and skills necessary to coach and support nursing staff in clinical advancement models, academic development, and role transition. The Educator works collaboratively with other departments to ensure quality patient care and satisfaction.

The Educator is a leader and facilitator in shared decision-making initiatives at the clinical, department, and system levels, resulting in a superior patient experience. This individual collaborates at all levels to improve nursing professional development practice, influence others for positive change, and is a role model, mentor, and clinical coach. The Educator develops programs and curriculum to continue to enhance clinical excellence. The Educator also acts as a consultant, planner, implementer, evaluator, and innovator for education initiatives.

The Educator actively participates and leads evidence-based practice and functions in accordance with professional practice standards set forth by the American Nursing Association and Association for Nursing Professional Development, PA Nurse Practice Act, regulatory standards, and Independence Health policies and procedures. Essential Job FunctionsAssessmentUses developmentally appropriate and evidence-based assessment techniques or instruments to define potential issues, problems, and needs. Collects pertinent data using valid and reliable techniques and instruments including, but not limited to, focus groups, questionnaires, evaluations of past programs, and analysis of trends.

Identification of Issues and TrendsDocuments identified needs in a manner that facilitates generation of purpose statements, educational objectives, program content, and evaluation criteria. Validates identified needs with the nurse, consumer, content experts, and other educators or disciplines when possible and appropriate. Outcomes IdentificationsDocuments outcomes including those that demonstrate learning and program impact. Develops outcomes that reflect professional role competence, learning, and change. Develops context specific outcomes based on organizational, stakeholders’ and learners values and goals, and current evidence and regulations. PlanningConsiders adult learning concepts and instructional design principles when planning an activity. Individualizes content to the target audience (e.

g. educational level, experience, and preferred method of learning), the resources available, and the domains of learning. Prepares content reflective of the stated objectives and evidence-based practice. ImplementationImplements in safe and timely manner. Uses evidence-based knowledge to achieve outcomes. Engages organizational systems and resources to implement plan. Documents implantation and modification. CoordinationCoordinates human, financial, systems and community resources to implement plan and documents. Provides leadership in the coordination of multidisciplinary healthcare and community resources and documents.

Learning and Practice EnvironmentPromotes education of learners to meet educational needs using appropriate psychomotor, cognitive and affective education techniques and strategies and provides opportunity for evaluation of such. Evaluates resources in the area of practice for readability, comprehensibility and accuracy for learners, patients, family, groups or populations. ConsultationCommunicate consultation recommendations that influence the plan, facilitate understanding, enhance the work of others and effect changes. Advise on design, development, implementation, and evaluation of materials and teaching strategies appropriate to the situation and the learners needs, developmental level, readiness to learn, ability to learn, culture and language.

Considers theories related to learning, behavioral change, motivation and other frameworks when designing materials and programs. EvaluationNurse Educator evaluates progress toward attainment of outcomes. Selects valid and reliable methods and instruments to measure process and outcomes, analyzes data, revises programs and projects based on outcomes and disseminates the evaluation results. QualityUses creativity and innovation to improve quality of the learning experiences. Ensures the presence of effective mechanisms for the development, implementation, and evaluation of performance. Participates in quality performance improvement activities. EducationParticipates in educational activities related to appropriate knowledge bases and professional issues.

Acquires knowledge and skills appropriate to the specialty area, practice setting, role, and learner diversity. Seeks experiences to develop, maintain, and improve competence in nursing professional development. Uses current research findings and other evidence to expand knowledge, enhance role performance, and increase knowledge of professional issues. Demonstrates responsibility for reporting to licensing, certification, accreditation, and other regulatory bodies for educational program compliance. Mentor colleagues, other nurses, students and others as appropriate. Rounds on all staff on assigned units and other areas as needed to provide education, support, and to promote retention. Competency and Experience [Knowledge, Skills and Abilities]Required Qualifications/Experience Master’s Degree in Nursing, MBA or related field. Two (2) years of experience in nursing clinical setting (preferable within the past three years).

Strong leadership ability, good organizational skills, independent and critical thinking skills, sound judgment, and knowledge of legal aspects and liability of nursing practice. Strong ability to communicate complex and/or controversial topics and concepts to a wide and diverse audience. License, Certification & ClearancesCurrent licensure to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of PennsylvaniaBLS Instructor certification completed within sixty (60) days of hire or transfer into the department. Obtain ANCC certification in Nursing Professional Development or clinical specialty within 2 years of hire or transfer into department.

ACLS required for ICU/Critical Care & Emergency Departments within six months of hire or transfer. PALS required for Emergency Departments within six months of hire or transfer. Act 34-PA Criminal Record Check from the PA State Police system. Position Type/Expected Hours of WorkIncumbent will be scheduled based on operational need (rotate shifts, standby, on-call, etc. ).
