Primary FunctionThe Project Engineer will play a key role in the delivery and technical oversight of solar PV and BESS projects within our growing renewable energy portfolio. We are expanding our in-house engineering capability to directly manage project design, execution, and operational performance across more than 100+ renewable energy assets in South Africa. The Project Engineer will be responsible for coordinating EPC contractors, overseeing project execution, ensuring compliance with quality and safety standards, and supporting commissioning and performance optimization. This role requires a technically minded individual who enjoys being involved in both the construction and operational phases of renewable energy projects.Key Performance Areas The Project Engineer must excel in a fast-paced environment, managing multiple projects at various stages of development and execution. The role demands strong attention to detail, solid organizational skills, and the ability to prioritize tasks effectively. Excellent communication is essential for engaging EPC partners, internal teams, and off-takers, while ensuring all projects meet technical, regulatory, and performance standards.Responsibilities and TasksProject Planning and ExecutionCoordinate and oversee solar PV and BESS projects from design through construction, commissioning, and handover.Develop and monitor project schedules, budgets, and resource plans with EPC contractors and internal teams.Track milestones, identify risks, and implement corrective measures to ensure projects are delivered on time and within scope.Oversee commissioning processes to ensure assets meet design, quality, and off-taker performance requirements.EPC and Contractor CoordinationManage EPC contractors and sub-contractors to ensure work aligns with scope, timelines, and quality standards.Conduct site inspections to verify workmanship, equipment installation, and adherence to safety and electrical standards.Monitor asset performance during the retention period, assisting with troubleshooting and issue resolution.Build and maintain strong working relationships with suppliers, off-takers, and project stakeholders.Operations and Performance OptimisationSupport operational monitoring of solar and battery systems to identify underperformance or technical faults.Collaborate with internal teams and service providers to implement corrective actions and improve energy yield.Contribute to the development of maintenance plans and performance reporting frameworks.Compliance and DocumentationEnsure all projects comply with South African electrical and grid standards, including NERSA, Eskom, and municipal regulations.Review technical documentation, permits, and handover packs for completeness and accuracy.Maintain detailed project and asset records for audits, performance analysis, and reporting purposes.Stakeholder and Contractor ManagementCommunicate effectively with EPC contractors, O&M providers, and internal teams to achieve project goals.Oversee contractor performance through EPC agreements, ensuring cost, time, and quality objectives are met.Support warranty and insurance claim processes where applicable.Minimum Qualifications and Experience RequirementsDegree in Electrical or Mechatronic Engineering.Minimum 3 years of experience working on solar PV and/or BESS projects in South Africa.Demonstrated experience coordinating EPC contractors and managing project execution or commissioning.Strong understanding of solar and battery technologies, including system layouts and performance monitoring.Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite; experience with project management tools and monitoring platforms is advantageous.Familiarity with South African electrical regulations, grid codes, and compliance standards.Ability to communicate fluently in both English and Afrikaans will be highly advantageous.Key Competencies and Physical RequirementsDynamic, proactive, and solution-oriented with a strong interest in renewable energy.Excellent organisational and time management skills to handle multiple priorities.Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to coordinate between technical and non-technical stakeholders.Ability to conduct site visits, including rooftop and elevated inspections.Fluent in English with excellent verbal and written communication skills; Afrikaans proficiency is an advantage.
