We encourage a corporate culture that respects and celebrates the dignity, value and diversity of all.Role Overview:Our Toronto, Calgary, or Vancouver office is currently recruiting for a Manager, Business Development in our Marketing & Business Development department, reporting to the Director, Business Development. The Manager, Business Development plays a strategic and hands on role in advancing the firm’s growth objectives across assigned practice groups and industry teams. This position partners closely with firm leadership, lawyers, and cross functional colleagues to develop and execute business development plans that strengthen client relationships, enhance market visibility, and drive revenue generation. The ideal candidate brings strong project leadership, a proactive mindset, and a deep understanding of professional services business development. They combine strategic thinking with operational discipline, bring a client centric mindset, and excel at turning ideas into measurable outcomes. They are a connector, a coach, and a catalyst for growth.The successful candidate will be responsible for:Practice Group Strategic Planning & ExecutionLeading the development, implementation, and ongoing refinement of annual business development plans for assigned practice and industry groups (group allocations to be determined, in part, by the skills and location of the successful candidate).Identifying high‑value prospects, emerging market opportunities, and cross‑selling pathways; support lawyers in advancing targeted outreach and relationship‑building activities.Tracking progress against BD plans, ensuring clear action items, timelines, and accountability for execution.Developing and maintaining dashboards, KPIs, and performance metrics to measure progress, inform decision‑making, and drive continuous improvement.Facilitating regular practice group meetings, ensuring agendas, materials, and follow‑up actions are well organized and aligned with strategic priorities.Client Acquisition and Retention SupportServing as a trusted advisor to practice group leaders, providing insights, recommendations, and coaching on business development best practices.Collaborating with lawyers to prepare for client meetings, pitches, and strategic conversations; ensure follow‑up actions are completed and documented.Providing support to the firm’s dedicated Proposals & Pursuits team to scope and deliver compelling and differentiated capability statements and RFP responses, providing ‘overflow’ support where necessary. Conducting research on clients, industries, competitors, and market trends to inform BD strategies and lawyer coaching.Liaising with Client Listening colleagues to gather and action feedback and disseminate client intelligence.Internal Collaboration – Profile Building, Thought Leadership and EventsCollaborating with Marketing & Communications colleagues to develop integrated campaigns that elevate the profile of assigned groups.Supporting the creation and distribution of thought leadership, including articles, alerts, newsletters, and social media content.Partnering with the Events team to design and execute high‑impact client engagement events, seminars, webinars, and roundtables.Evaluating sponsorships, conferences, and memberships for strategic alignment and ROI; provide recommendations to practice leaders.Supporting lawyers’ participation in conferences, speaking engagements, and networking opportunities, ensuring strong preparation and follow‑through.Working closely with Knowledge Management, Finance, Professional Resources and other internal teams to support client‑focused initiatives and enhance service delivery.The successful candidate must have the following education, experience and/or demonstrated skills:Bachelor's degree in business, marketing, communications, or a related field; MBA, JD or relevant postgraduate degree an asset.7-10 years of business development experience, ideally within a law firm or professional services environment.Strong project management skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and stakeholders.Demonstrated people and/or portfolio management skills strongly preferred.Exceptional communication, writing, and presentation abilities.Demonstrated ability to build trust, influence senior stakeholders, and drive accountability.Proficiency with CRM systems, analytics tools, proposal tools and Microsoft Office applications.A proactive, collaborative, and solutions-oriented approach.Employment Type: Permanent, Full-TimeThe role is open to professionals in any of our office locations (Vancouver, Calgary or Toronto) and will be responsible for performance management and coaching for at least one BD professional.Salary Range: $115,000 - $125,000 AnnuallyWhat we offer:Competitive compensation + Extended Health & Dental Care.RRSP Matching Program.Education/tuition allowance.Fitness Reimbursement Program.Diversity and Inclusion Centric Culture.A Culture of Wellness: Cassels recognizes the importance of wellness and provides a comprehensive program that addresses the mental and physical well-being of our employees by providing resources, services, training and support on an ongoing basis.A fully stocked kitchen with healthy snacks, plus coffee, tea, and drinks throughout the year.A business casual dress code (client/day specific).Employee referral bonus.A hybrid work environment.Cassels is an equal opportunity employer committed to fostering a workplace where people of all identities and lived experiences feel valued, respected, and supported.
