Job Description

The Marine Standards Superintendent is responsible for ensuring the highest standards of marine safety, operational excellence, and regulatory compliance across the tug fleet. This role oversees Training Captains, Senior Captains, and the HSEQ Superintendent, providing leadership in the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of marine operating standards, training programs, audits, and safety culture across all port operations. The role also serves as a key advisor in business development efforts, customer interactions, and operational decision-making.Key ResponsibilitiesOperational Standards and Safety Develop, implement, and maintain marine operational standards aligned with local & international and company-specific requirements (e.g., ISM Code, SOLAS, MARPOL). Ensure tug operations meet company and regulatory standards for safety, environmental protection, and efficiency. Conduct regular reviews and updates of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). Assist in incident investigations, providing nautical expertise to identify root causes and implement preventive measures. Conduct frequent site visits and participate in operational and safety audits to ensure effectiveness and compliance. Provide leadership and guidance to Port Managers and Captains in daily operations and incident handling.Certification and Compliance Ensure that the responsible person for vessel certificate compliance in each area of operation is clearly identified and fully understands their obligations. Monitor the status of statutory and class certification, working closely with Technical Superintendents and Port Managers to maintain continuous compliance.Training and Competency Management Oversee and support Training Captains and Senior Captains in delivering onboard and classroom training to tug crews. Establish and monitor training and competency frameworks in line with STCW, Flag State, and company requirements. Provide guidance on the selection and performance management of marine staff, supporting customer engagements related to training and operations. Promote a culture of continuous learning and professional development for marine crew.HSEQ Oversight Supervise the HSEQ Superintendent in implementing company HSEQ policies, procedures, and initiatives. Lead or support investigations into marine incidents and near-misses, ensuring thorough root cause analysis and execution of corrective/preventive actions. Coordinate internal and external audits, ensuring close-out of non-conformities and continuous improvement.Leadership and Collaboration Provide leadership, mentorship, and performance oversight for the marine leadership team. Foster strong collaboration with Fleet Superintendents, Technical Teams, Port Managers, and HR/Crewing to ensure operational readiness. Engage proactively with customers on marine operational issues and safety performance. Contribute nautical expertise to business development initiatives, including tender processes and customer engagements, ensuring operational feasibility and risk awareness.Qualifications And ExperienceMaster Mariner Certificate of Competency (Unlimited) or equivalent recognized maritime qualification.Minimum of 5–10 years of experience in tug/towage or offshore marine operations, with at least 3 years in a supervisory or superintendent capacity.Solid understanding of Safety Management Systems (ISM), port state control, vessel certification, and marine training programs.Demonstrated experience in conducting audits, investigations, and managing compliance with international maritime regulations.Key CompetenciesStrong leadership and interpersonal skills with the ability to influence across functions.Excellent knowledge of marine operations, standards, and safety systems.Analytical thinking and problem-solving capacity, especially in high-pressure environments.Clear and confident communicator in both verbal and written forms.Able to engage with customers and stakeholders on technical and operational matters with credibility.Proficiency in report writing, audits, and incident investigation processes.Working ConditionsPrimarily office-based with frequent travel/visits to vessels, ports, and operational sites.May require regional or international travel.Available for emergency response and high-priority operational matters outside regular working hours.Building a Diverse WorkplaceIn Svitzer we value the diversity of our talent and will always strive to recruit the best person for the job – we value diversity in all its forms, including but not limited to gender, age, nationality, race, sexual orientation, disability, or religious beliefs.
