Mechanical Design Engineer at Colt Automation Ltd.Location: Mississauga, ONDepartment: Engineering / Mechanical DesignReports To: Engineering Manager / VP of SalesAbout Colt AutomationColt Automation is a leader in the design, manufacturing, and installation of coil processing and press-feed line equipment for the metal stamping, roll forming, and fabrication industries.Colt engineers’ robust machinery including: conventional Feed Lines, Space Saver Feed Lines, Cradle Feed Lines, Uncoilers, Straighteners, Servo Feeder, Cut-to-Length feed lines processing a range of sheet metal materials (AHSS, aluminum, stainless steel, etc.).Job SummaryThe Mechanical Design Engineer will be responsible for conceptualizing, designing, and detailing mechanical components and assemblies for Colt’s coil processing equipment. This includes producing 3D models, engineering drawings, and technical documentation, while ensuring manufacturability, performance, and compliance with safety and quality standards.Key ResponsibilitiesDevelop 3D parametric CAD models (parts & assemblies) for new machines and retrofits (e.g., feeders, straighteners, uncoilers)Create detailed 2D engineering drawingsSpecify materials, surface finishes, hardware, and other componentsPrepare and maintain Bills of Materials (BOMs) for assembliesPerform engineering calculations (e.g., stress, load, factor of safety) to validate design integrityCollaborate with control engineers to define electromechanical interfaces (motors, actuators, sensors)Work with suppliers to source components, verify fit, and evaluate technical feasibilityProvide design support for prototyping, build, testing, commissioning, and field serviceUpdate documentation via Engineering Change Requests (ECRs) / Engineering Change Orders (ECOs)Support continuous improvement efforts to optimize design for manufacturability, cost, and maintenanceParticipate in design reviews, risk assessments (e.g., FMEA), and validation activitiesEnsure designs meet applicable safety, regulatory, and industry standardsQualifications & SkillsDiploma or Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering Technology, or related field5+ years of mechanical design experience, preferably in industrial machinery or automationStrong proficiency in 3D CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, Inventor)Experience with 2D drawing standardsFamiliarity with pneumatics, hydraulics, or motion control systemsBasic understanding of control systems, motors, PLCs (helpful for interface design)Excellent problem-solving skills, analytical mindset, and attention to detailEffective communication skills to work cross-functionally (engineering, manufacturing, service, sales)Ability to manage multiple projects/priorities and meet deadlinesKnowledge of manufacturing processes (welding, machining, sheet metal) is a plusExperience with revision control and engineering change processesPreferred Qualifications (Bonus)Experience in coil processing machinery (feed lines, straighteners, uncoilers)Experience with lean manufacturing, Six Sigma, or continuous improvement methodologyExperience working with high-load mechanical systems (industrial roll-to-roll, heavy machinery)Previous field experience (installation, commissioning, maintenance)What You’ll Gain / Why Work HereBe part of a company with over 60 years of innovation in coil processing and automationWork on heavy-duty, high-precision industrial machinesCollaborate with a multidisciplinary team (mechanical, controls, sales, manufacturing)Opportunity for professional growth — Colt lists senior roles (e.g. Engineering Manager) and has engineering leadership depth.Competitive compensation and benefits (based on Colt’s other roles)
