Position Title: Zoo Photographer Department: Creative Services Reports To: Creative Director and Creative Services ManagerFLSA Status: Full-Time, Salaried, ExemptPurposeA zoo photographer plays a crucial role in documenting the vibrant life within the zoo by capturing stunning images of a diverse array of animals, engaging exhibits, special events, and unique behind-the-scenes moments. This visual storytelling not only enhances the zoo's educational outreach but also supports its promotional efforts and conservation initiatives.
The photographer’s work is prominently displayed in a variety of formats, including colorful brochures that entice visitors, dynamic content for the zoo’s website, eye-catching posts for social media platforms that engage the community, and detailed images in scientific publications aimed at conservationists and researchers. Each photograph serves to inspire a deeper appreciation for wildlife and the importance of protecting their habitats. Essential Job Functions Produces content that exhibits an exceptional variety of creative, technical, and documentary imagery. Collaborates closely with creative services teams to develop innovative image concepts. Oversees and coordinates photoshoots while effectively managing photography sessions.
Implements standard photography protocols, including image editing, utilization of tools, and adherence to established processes and guidelines. Maintains and organizes a digital media library in accordance with Zoo standards. Ensures that photography equipment is current, organized, and well-maintained Meets project requirements and deadlines consistently Obtains necessary photo release signatures from visitors, among others Engages in collaborative efforts with various Zoo departments, including marketing, education, events, and animal care. Possesses a comprehensive understanding of digital asset management, which involves the strategic organization, storage, and retrieval of digital assets.
Work Environment The position requires a strong presence at the various zoo campuses, engaging directly with both animals and visitors in an immersive environment. Candidates must be prepared to work flexible hours, which may include evenings and weekends to accommodate special events, educational programs, and other activities. Additionally, occasional travel to different zoo locations or related events may be necessary. The job involves spending significant time outdoors, where you'll experience a range of weather conditions, from sunny days to rain or cooler temperatures, allowing for a dynamic work environment that connects you with nature and wildlife.

Bachelor’s or associate degree in graphic design, graphic arts, fine arts or similar field Experience: 5-7 years in photo industry, portfolio showcasing professional work required Artistic Skills: Demonstrate strong artistic ability and a high level of creativity. Software Proficiency: Highly proficient in Adobe Lightroom, Comfortable with videography and production with knowledge of Premiere Pro and After Effects, Experience with Adobe InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, as well as Word, PowerPoint and Excel. Equipment Knowledge: Mac computers, Nikon (both mirrorless and DSLR) Presentation Skills: Ability to effectively present ideas both verbally and visually in group settings. Problem-Solving:
Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to multitask. Physical RequirementsManual dexterity to operate office machinery such as computer, large format printer, laminator, telephone, fax machine, copier, calculator, etc. is required. Position is primarily sedentary, usually sitting for long periods of time in an office setting, but occasionally requires use of ladders and working outdoors in various weather conditions; must be available to work evenings, weekends and holidays.
Photography Ownership RightsAll photographs created by the employee during the course of their employment for the Pittsburgh Zoo & Aquarium shall be considered joint works, with the Zoo and the employee holding equal and undivided copyright ownership in the images. Both parties shall have the non-exclusive right to use the photographs for their respective purposes, including but not limited to, marketing, advertising, website content, and portfolio display.
