The Department of Medical Sciences is a large clinical department with about 250 employees and about 700 people affiliated through Uppsala University Hospital. The department has a broad research profile with strong research groups in a number of areas. The research is conducted in close connection with the clinical activities at Uppsala University Hospital, and includes basic studies in the causes of disease as well as the development and evaluation of improved diagnostics and new treatment methods. For more information on the department’s activities, please visit www.medsci.uu.se.Description of the subject areaThe field of clinical chemistry includes biochemical, immunological, and physico-chemical analyses and functional tests with the aim of detecting diseases and signs of disease and monitoring the effects of treatment.DutiesThe position involves overarching responsibility for research and education in the field of clinical chemistry. The successful applicant will be expected to conduct their own research in the field and to provide supervision and teaching at the first cycle (undergraduate) level, second cycle (Master’s) level and third cycle (doctoral) level. Administrative duties and internal and external representative and management assignments may be required. Duties also include presenting information on research and development work. One third of the working hours will be spent performing clinical duties as a specialist physician at the Clinical Chemistry and Pharmacology Section as part of the Academic Laboratory (Laboratory Medicine) operations of Uppsala University Hospital. This includes medical knowledge responsibility for a number of analytical methods and laboratory collaboration within Healthcare Region Mid Sweden. Administrative duties such as responsibility for clinic research, development and training council meetings and ALF management [management related to the agreement on medical education and clinical research] may be included.QualificationsTo be eligible for employment as a professor, the applicant must have demonstrated both research and teaching expertise (Swedish Higher Education Ordinance, Chapter 4,3). Under the Appointment Regulations for Uppsala University (AR), having the personal characteristics required to perform the duties of the post well is a general eligibility requirement for teachers (AR,5).Research expertise must have been demonstrated through independent research contributions and through achievements that are of very high quality by international standards. The applicant must have demonstrated expertise in planning, initiating, leading, and developing research; an ability to obtain research funding in competition; and well-documented expertise in supervising third-cycle (doctoral) students. The applicant’s contributions to the international and national scientific community shall be assessed on the basis of such criteria as the quality and scope of scholarly publications (see AR,31)Teaching expertise must have been demonstrated by an extensive teaching portfolio (see AR,22). Furthermore, the applicant must demonstrate well-documented expertise in supervision at the first cycle (undergraduate) level, second cycle (Master’s) level and third cycle (doctoral) level. As a prerequisite for having demonstrated teaching expertise, the applicant must have completed teacher training for higher education of relevance to activities at the University, comprising at least ten weeks, or acquired equivalent knowledge. If special circumstances exist, the teacher training for higher education may be undertaken during the first two years of employment. The teacher training must include doctoral supervision.Applicants for this position must hold a degree of Master of Science in Medicine and have specialist expertise in clinical chemistry. If the applicant is not entered onto the Swedish Specialist Register, they must have submitted an application for entry onto the Swedish Specialist Register (clinical chemistry) to the National Board of Health and Welfare by the application deadline for this position. However, the applicant must have obtained Swedish registration as a specialist in clinical chemistry by the date the employment decision is made. If the applicant offered the position also meets Uppsala University Hospital’s requirements for employment as a senior physician, the applicant will be offered employment combined with the position of senior physician.The applicant must have a documented ability to teach in Swedish and English.Assessment criteriaWhen selecting from among qualified applicants, research expertise will be given the greatest weight, followed by teaching expertise. However, a balanced assessment will be made such that an applicant with significantly greater teaching expertise may be ranked above an applicant with somewhat greater research expertise. Clinical expertise is also significant to the position and will be assigned weight.Particular weight will be given to experience of Swedish or Scandinavian laboratory diagnostics. Research experience in cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, mental health, infectious or inflammatory diseases will also be given weight.Research expertise refers to research qualifications. In assessing research expertise, research quality will be the prime consideration. The scope of the research, particularly in terms of its depth and breadth, will also be taken into account. Furthermore, consideration shall be given to the capacity to plan, initiate, lead and develop research and doctoral-level education, the ability to acquire research funding in competition, as well as demonstrated ability to collaborate and engage with the wider community through research (AR,20). In assessing teaching expertise, teaching quality will be the prime consideration. The scope of teaching experience, in terms of both breadth and depth, shall also be afforded consideration. Furthermore, consideration will be given to the capacity to plan, initiate, lead, and develop education and teaching, as well as the ability to connect research to teaching. The ability to interact with actors inside and outside the University in relation to issues of teaching and learning in higher education is also included in teaching expertise (AR,22). See also GA,4.Clinical expertise is demonstrated through clinical work and clinical training as well as participation in clinical developmental work. Clinical development includes measures that have enhanced the quality or efficiency of health and medical care (AR,24).Assessment Criteria, Other ExpertiseAdministrative and management expertise are also significant to the position and will be assigned weight. The ability to collaborate with the wider community and to communicate information about research and development work will be taken into account.Administrative expertise is demonstrated through, for example, the ability to plan, organise and prioritise work in an efficient and appropriate manner, as well as the ability to specify and adhere to time frames. Such expertise includes overall activity planning; the ability to manage resources in a way that reflects operational priorities; and the ability to work in a structured manner and based on an awareness of goals and quality (AR,28). See also GA,5.Management expertise is demonstrated through the ability to lead activities and staff, make decisions, take responsibility, motivate others and provide them with what they require for the effective achievement of shared goals. Expertise may also be demonstrated through the ability to coordinate the group; to help create a sense of involvement, participation and job satisfaction; and to deal with conflicts (AR,30). See also GA,5.When assessing collaborative expertise, experience with and expertise in education and outreach, editorships and other activities related to the exchange of knowledge between the University and the outside world, as well as experience with innovation and entrepreneurship, shall be of significance (GA,6).In an overall assessment of the applicants’ qualifications, parental leave, part-time work due to childcare, trade union responsibilities, military service or similar activities shall be treated as work experience (AR,94).When hiring new teachers, the University shall select the applicants who, upon a qualitative overall assessment of their competence and expertise, are judged to have the best potential to perform and develop the duties concerned and to contribute to the positive development of activities (AR,4).The gender equality aspect shall be applied in the appointment process if, after qualitative assessment, two applicants of different genders are found to have equivalent or near-equivalent qualifications and one of the genders is under-represented (accounts for less than 40 percent within the occupational category in question and at the workplace concerned) (AR,95).All qualifications must be documented to enable assessment of both quality and scope. International experts may be involved in the assessment of submitted applications.
