**Research Vessel 1st Mate / Marine Science Officer**Job SummaryUnder general supervision of the Research Vessel Captain, the Research Vessel First Mate/Marine Science Officer, will perform duties and tasks associated with the operation, maintenance and repair of an inland/near coastal oceanographic research vessel and provide assistance in field work and vessel related educational and research projects.Compensation$48,000 per year**Commensurate with experience, skills, and qualification.**This is a full-time, on-site, exempt staff position.Qualifications**Minimum Qualifications:** Bachelor of Arts or Science degree in Biology, Chemistry, Marine Science or related scientific field or comparable combination of education and laboratory experience Two years experience in small boat handling and maintenance Familiarity with use and maintenance of science related field equipment Current certification in CPR, AED and First Aid, or obtain certification within 30 calendar days of hire Ability to pass drug and alcohol screening tests as mandated by appropriate licensing authorities SCUBA certificationDesired Qualifications USCG Mate's or OUPV license or ability to complete licensure within 120 days of hire Master's degree in Marine Science or Oceanography Prior at-sea experience with oceanographic research equipment Experience in and knowledge of coastal waters of Kaneohe Bay and Oahu One year experience in research or commercial vessel handling and maintenance Skilled in the use of hand and power tools necessary to perform job Familiarity with Federal and State rules, regulations and requirements pertaining to research vessel operationsOther Qualifications Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States. Visa sponsorship and relocation allowance is not available for this position. Report to work obligations to support the department and may require work during HPU's winter break, if necessary. This position may be considered an **essential** position with report to work obligations depending on the type of emergency, campus closure, or evacuation. Must meet training and background check qualifications and comply with the Protection of Minors policy. Upon hire, candidate must have reliable personal transportation to facilitate travel between to all HPU worksites and other locations as required by the position. This includes a valid driver's license and a personal vehicle that is legally registered and insured. This position may also require driving responsibility for an HPU vehicle. Due to driving responsibilities, you must meet training and background check qualifications and comply with HPU's Vehicle Driving policy. Able to work all shifts and extended hours. Successful candidate will be able to work in an environment that utilize excellent time and stress management skills.Key Responsibilities/Essential Job Functions Responsibility #1 (30%) Assists the Master Boat Captain in the operation of the university's research vessel during laboratory sessions including: handling lines, docking and undocking, operation of deck machinery, equipment handling and storage. Operates winches to anchor vessel or deploy scientific sampling gear. Rigs trawls, nets, corers, pumps, and other scientific sampling gear for over-the-side deployment. Loads and unloads gear.
