RVNZ operates a fleet of three research vessels from the Port of Wellington that provide word-class environmental monitoring and research platforms.About The PositionRV Tangaroa is Aotearoa New Zealand’s largest research vessel, conducting voyages both domestically and internationally including remote voyages. This position reports to the First Mate under the Master and is responsible for assisting with the navigational and safety functions of the vessel. Each swing operates with a complement of two Second Mates that conjointly alternate in performing these duties.This position sits within the NIWA business unit of Earth Sciences New Zealand.Key Responsibilities Include Navigation duties including maintenance of the charts, equipment and planning; ordering and managing supplies. Safety duties including maintaining equipment, plans and risk registers; investigating incidents and maintaining accurate records, conducting inductions for new crew and visitors. Maritime duties in accordance with Maritime NZ regulations and company standards. General duties to assist with the safe operation of the vessel and adherence to all policies and procedures.What You’ll Bring 2 years or more sea time in an Officer role. Experience on a vessel of equivalent size and class (desirable). Watchkeeper Deck Certificate of Competency (minimum). Master Under Global Maritime Distress Safety Systems – General Operators Certificate Advanced Fire Fighting (AFF) STCW Basic Training including Seafarers Security Awareness, and Survival Craft & Rescue Boats other than fast rescue boats (or Proficiency in Survival Craft & Rescue Boats).
