The School hosts two DSI-NRF Chairs and is home to the Materials Physics Research Institute with significant experimental infrastructure, the Mandelstam Institute for Theoretical Physics, the Institute of Collider Particle Physics, the Wits Centre for Astrophysics, the Nuclear Structure Research Group, and the WitsQ Research Group focused on quantum technologies. In addition, the School has an active teaching programme that reaches over 4000 students annually and an outreach programme that includes the Wits Anglo American Digital Dome. The incumbent will be responsible for the effective financial and administrative support for the School of Physics, reporting to the Head of School.Brief DescriptionMinimum Qualifications/requirements/criteriaA BCom degree or equivalent5 years’ experience in financial roles with administrative managementAccounting and financial management skillsHigh level computer literacy (ERP, Excel, ORACLE systems)Excellent communication, writing, reporting and negotiation skillsExcellent computer skills, proficient in Excel, Word, PowerPoint and OutlookAbility to communicate effectively and clearly with academic and support staff, students, and external role playersPeople management skills, punctual, deadline driven, proactive, decisive, professional, a team player, honest, courteous, at all timesWork effectively, efficiently, and independently with minimum supervisionAn understanding Oracle and Business Object Systems, the University’s Administrative and Financial procedures and systems would be advantageousKey Responsibilities IncludeFinancial ManagementManagement of finances of multiple funding sources that includes responsible for the Planning of the School’s Budget, Project Management, Internal and External Projects, Research Incentive Grants, Advances, Subsistence, Reimbursements, Donations, Invoicing, Debtors, Creditors, Procurement, Bursaries and Stipend Payments, Reconciling of accounts, Journals, Audits, Petty Cash, Stores, Recoveries and Audit and Control.AdministrationManagement of School Assets, Teaching Assistant payments, Assisting with Conferences, Workshops, Functions and Events and meetings with financial, administrative and laboratory facilities staff.Staff ManagementManagement of direct subordinates in the school.GeneralCompliance with University policies and procedures. Advise academic staff on funding options.
