Act as the primary contact for the GDOT District Sign Manager, District Maintenance Office, Area Engineers, and the DCS Project Manager. Interpret and apply sign standards from GDOT Traffic Operations and the FHWA Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD). Responsibilities include maintaining overhead span wire signs, interstate gore signs, assisting GDOT with overhead extruded panel signs, and maintaining ground-mounted signs on all state routes and interstates within the Atlanta Metro area. Ensure adequate stock of materials (posts, hardware, signs) is maintained. Complete required documentation including crew day forms and sign installation reports. Perform preventative maintenance on assigned equipment.This position is on-call for emergencies and may be assigned additional duties as needed.Essential Duties And ResponsibilitiesThe following list outlines the core functions of this role. It is not exhaustive, and additional duties may be assigned as appropriate.Operates hand and power tools used in sign installation and maintenance (e.g., power saw, drill, sander, pole saw, chainsaw, ratchet). Operates heavy equipment including forklifts, aerial lift trucks, flatbed sign trucks, and attenuator trucks while ensuring compliance with all safety standards. Installs new roadway signage, repairs or replaces damaged signs, and fabricates/repairs barricades. Performs routine cleaning and maintenance of tools, vehicles, and equipment. Assists with sign inventory management, including ordering and tracking materials and supplies. Coordinates sign installation and maintenance activities with other teams and departments. Provides emergency response support, including after-hours and weekend availability. Enters Daily Work Reports into GDOT’s GAMS (Georgia Asset Management System). Enters Daily Activity Reports into DCS’s iEMS database. Performs related tasks as directed. QualificationsMinimum Training And ExperienceHigh School Diploma or GED. Five (5) years of experience in public sign installation and repair. Ability to perform physically demanding work in challenging environmental conditions, including frequent lifting, pulling, and pushing of up to 50 lbs. Equivalent combinations of education, training, and experience may be considered. Possession of a valid Traffic Control Certification. Working knowledge of equipment operation, repair, and maintenance relevant to the scope of work. Familiarity with the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) and traffic control procedures for work zones. Strong knowledge of practices, materials, methods, and equipment used in highway sign maintenance. Valid Class C Driver’s License, with the ability to obtain a Class B CDL. Knowledge, Skills, And AbilitiesAbility to interpret written, oral, diagram, and schedule-based instructions. Solid understanding of the safe and proper use of manual, electrical, gas, and hydraulic tools and equipment. Knowledge of proper barricade and signage placement for road and lane closures to protect both vehicular and pedestrian traffic. Skilled in operating manual, gas-powered, and hydraulic trade tools, as well as light equipment. Ability to read and interpret safety rules, operational/maintenance instructions, procedure manuals, the MUTCD, and related technical documents. Ability to read and interpret blueprints and apply instructions across multiple formats (written, oral, diagram, or schedule). Capable of working in extreme temperatures (over 100°F and below 30°F) for extended periods. Strong interpersonal skills to establish and maintain effective working relationships with GDOT personnel, coworkers, and the public. Ability to work independently and complete assignments with minimal supervision. Demonstrates a professional, cooperative, and safety-minded work ethic.
