Job Description

About H2ElectroH2Electro is developing one of the world’s most advanced fully ceramic solid oxide co-electrolysis technologies, enabling the direct conversion of steam and CO₂ into syngas - the key feedstock for producing synthetic methane and e-fuels. Our 100% ceramic architecture provides exceptional resistance to carbon deposition, allowing efficient and stable operation in CO₂-rich environments where conventional SOEC technologies struggle.Rooted in deep scientific collaboration with the University of Tartu and supported by strong industrial partners, H2Electro is moving rapidly from laboratory innovation to real-environment demonstration systems. Our mission is to bring next-generation electrolysis technology to commercial scale and accelerate the global transition toward sustainable fuels.Location: Tartu, EstoniaReports to: Chief Technology Officer (CTO) Employment Type: Full-Time 1. Role Purpose The SOEC Testing Engineer supports the testing and validation of H2Electro’s proprietary SOEC cells at various levels, from single cells and short stacks to supporting full stack and module testing at partner facilities. The focus is on evaluating cell behavior under realistic operating conditions. This work includes test setup, component selection, experimental execution, analysis of performance and degradation, and documentation of results. 2. Key Responsibilities 2.1 Cell Testing and Analysis with Different Stack and Short Stack configurations - Analysis and troubleshooting of critical components for testing H2Electro’s ceramic cells in short stack and stack configuration. - Evaluate the mechanical, thermal, and electrochemical requirements for test configurations. - Validate sealing approaches and stack compression to ensure reliable test conditions - Develop and maintain custom operational software for SOEC test facilities.  - Implement maintenance plan and procedures for test facilities and associated instrumentation. - Develop data management and analysis tools.  - Develop gas delivery systems for test facilities including software and auxiliary subsystems such as superheaters, trace heaters compressors, etc 2.2 Testing and Reporting - Conduct laboratory testing of cells and short-stacks. - Troubleshoot hardware and software issues in testing equipment, such as gas delivery, heating systems, sealing, flow control, and data acquisition units. - Apply electrochemical methods (e.g., voltammetry, EIS) to characterize cell performance and degradation. - Implement corrective measures to ensure safety and reliability of test operations.- Document and report test procedures, results and findings in clear, traceable formats.  - Contribute to technical reports and presentations for internal and external stakeholders - Identify and communicate potential failure modes, such as sealing leaks or flow imbalances. - Participate in root-cause analysis under supervision of senior engineers. 2.3 Performance Delivery - Support the validation of proprietary SOEC cells in externally sourced stack environments - Contribute to achieving performance targets for H2Electro's cell technology (i.e. H2Electro product goals). 2.4 Collaboration - Work under the direction of the CTO or delegated project leads and perform assigned tasks. - Work closely with the Stack Platform Lead. - Participate in internal meetings and share status updates as required. - Attend workshops, site visits, or technical events. - Collaborate with external laboratories and industrial partners conducting larger-scale testing. - Prepare test articles, define test protocols, provide technical oversight during campaigns. - Assist in troubleshooting and root-cause analysis of stack/module-level performance deviations. - Work cross-functionally with materials scientists, design engineers, systems engineers to improve product performance.  3. Required Competencies 3.1 Education & Experience - At least Bachelor’s degree or its equivalent in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Chemical Engineering or a related discipline. - At least 2 years hands-on laboratory testing experience in electrochemistry, fuel cells, batteries, or related energy technologies  3.2 Technical Skills - Understanding of high-temperature ceramics and electrochemical cell operation.  - Proficiency in data acquisition, test stand operation, test protocol execution.  - Experience with solid oxide fuel/electrolysis cells or similar high-temperature electrochemical systems. - Knowledge of electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), IV curve analysis, and degradation studies.  - Familiarity with PLC, HMI/SCADA software, LabView/Python or other programming language. - Knowledge of SQL databases and data analysis tools. - Proficiency with sensors and electrical connections.  - Proficiency with high purity gas/media distribution systems, components and flow controls.  - Familiarity with PI&D and electrical schematics. - Familiarity with safety protocols for handling explosive gases, high-temperature and high-voltage systems. - Proficiency with CAD tools such as SolidWorks. 3.3 Personal Attributes - Diligent, curious, and focused on quality. - Able to work independently with guidance.  - Adaptable and open to learning in a dynamic R&D setting. - Able to function effectively in ambiguous or resource-constrained environments. - Methodical and detail-oriented in experimental work. - Strong interpersonal skills for cross-team and partner interactions. - Strong analytical and problem-solving skills. - Enthusiasm for contributing to the development of next generation co-SOEC technologies 4.
