Your Title: Software Engineer (Embedded Systems)Job Location: Christchurch, New ZealandOur Department: Civil Field SolutionsAre you ready to build the future of heavy construction, making massive machinery safer and smarter?What You Will DoAs an integral part of the on-machine solutions software engineering group within Civil Field Solutions, you will contribute to the next generation of embedded applications that run on heavy civil construction equipment like bulldozers, excavators, and pavers. Your work will directly impact operator productivity and safety by providing automation and powerful computing capabilities on the machine itself.Our primary technology stack is Rust on embedded Linux devices with web-based user interfaces, and this role focuses on the backend Rust application. Our applications leverage multiple communication technologies such as CAN, Ethernet, WiFi, Cell, and Serial to gather information from sensors, process data in a soft real-time environment, and communicate with users on-board, cloud endpoints, or other field systems.Depending on your experience level, you will own various stages of the software development lifecycle. For career professionals, you will be expected to work independently, leveraging your in-depth knowledge of systems programming to design and deliver robust, scalable solutions.Your Primary Day-to-day Responsibilities Will InvolveDeveloping, modifying, and testing high-quality, maintainable code for our embedded Linux platforms, primarily focused on backend systems logic.Designing and evaluating software architectures at the module level, ensuring high reusability and adherence to system design principles.Working with low-level communication protocols (like CAN, TCP/IP, Serial) to process data from various sensors in a soft real-time environment.Collaborating across product management and engineering teams to translate business needs into technical specifications and scalable software solutions.Please note: Only applicants legally entitled to work in New Zealand will be considered. What Skills & Experience You Should BringStrong proficiency in embedded C or C++ for systems programming on Linux or similar embedded platforms.A solid understanding of software development principles, design patterns (e.g., SOLID), and best practices.Progressive experience developing software utilizing one or more programming languages (e.g., Java, Python, C++) and software development and testing tools, frameworks, and methodologies (e.g., Visual Studio, Eclipse, Sublime Text, Atom, Microsoft SQL Server, Oracle Database, Bootstrap, Docker).Experience with Git or similar version control systems.Web Application Programming incl. HTML, CSS, Javascript, etc.Ability to troubleshoot complex software issues and debug across different layers of an application stack.Exceptional communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to convey technical concepts to diverse audiences (presentations, documentation, and interpersonal skills).Passion to learn new technologies, compare different technologies, and arrive at low-level design and high-level architecture decisions.Well-versed knowledge in Software Architecture Patterns, Design Patterns, Software Algorithms and Software Engineering Principles.What Skills And Experience You Could BringDirect experience with Embedded Linux development.Familiarity with modern systems languages, particularly Rust, as it is our primary technology stack moving forward, or Zig.Experience with network protocols (e.g., CAN, TCP, HTTP, Websockets) and designing soft real-time systems.A Bachelor's degree in a relevant field (Computer Science, Computer Engineering, etc.) or equivalent practical experience.About Your LocationThis role is based at Trimble’s New Zealand headquarters in Christchurch, on the Little River Link Cycleway.
