This employment opportunity is restricted to Nunavut Inuit who reside in Naujaat only.Reporting to the Principal of the Tuugaalik High School, the Student Support Assistant (SSA) supports the inclusion of students in the education program. Working with the Student Support Teacher (SST) and the classroom teacher, the SSA assists in implementing education programs for students, supports the classroom teacher in behavior support strategies, participates in instructional team and school team meetings, provides personal care support, professional growth activities and acts in a professional manner.Working under the day-to-day guidance of the classroom teacher and the SST, the SSA will help the classroom teacher deliver the education program to the students, particularly those students whose education program require accommodations and/or curricular individualization and will play in integral role in supporting the delivery of the education program and student progress, build true rapport and a caring relationship with the students, provide encouragement and support the students development of independence to whom they are assigned to.With a patience, flexibility, adaptability and a caring student-centered attitude, the Student Support Worker will assist the classroom teacher with organization tasks such as preparing materials for instruction, assist the classroom teacher in implementing education programs for students, provide personal care support to the child they are assigned to such as mobility assistance, washroom, feeding and dressing assistance, support the classroom teacher in implementing and maintaining a safe, welcoming and positive learning environment, participate in professional growth activities as well as participate in School Team meetings as requested. Written and oral communication skills, and computer literacy skills will be beneficial in this position.The knowledge, skills, and abilities required for this job are usually obtained from a Grade 12 Diploma or an Adult Basic Education equivalent to Grade 12 or higher. The candidate should have a First Aid certificate and ASIST training. This is a Highly Sensitive Position and a satisfactory Criminal Record Check, along with a clear Vulnerable Sector Check is required.The Official Languages of Nunavut are Inuktut, English and French. Applicants may submit their resume in any of the official languages of Nunavut. Fluency in more than one of Nunavut’s official languages would be considered an asset. Knowledge of Inuit communities, culture, land,Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit, Inuktut and experience working in a northern cross-cultural environment are also considered assets.Acceptable combinations of education and experience may be considered for this position.
