Test Engineer – Hands-On Role in Next-Generation Propulsion Development!El Segundo, CA | OnsiteOpportunity SummaryWe are a venture-backed, pre-seed stage startup developing advanced propulsion technologies for spacecraft. With active government contracts and strategic partnerships, our small but fast-moving team is building hardware from the ground up to enable more efficient, scalable in-space mobility. As our first dedicated Test Engineer, you will work directly with the CEO and CTO in a hands-on lab environment to design, build, and execute experimental test campaigns. This role is ideal for someone who thrives on solving problems creatively, developing test systems with limited resources, and wearing multiple hats across electronics, mechanical, and software domains. You’ll play a critical role in validating propulsion hardware, shaping experiments, and ensuring our systems perform under real-world conditions.About UsWe are an early-stage propulsion company focused on enabling the next generation of spacecraft mobility. With deep aerospace and defense expertise, active government contracts, and a lean, mission-driven team, we are positioned to rapidly advance propulsion technology from lab-scale demonstrations to flight-ready hardware.Job DutiesDevelop and execute test plans for propulsion hardware, subsystems, and components.Operate and maintain laboratory test setups, including vacuum chambers, pumps, gauges, and sensors.Build and configure hardware test rigs, integrating mechanical and electrical subsystems.Program and automate test setups using Python, Arduino, or similar tools.Conduct hands-on work with machining tools (e.g., drilling, modifying fixtures) to enable rapid prototyping.Design and assemble circuits, integrate sensors, and troubleshoot electronics in support of tests.Collect, analyze, and report experimental data for leadership and partners.Collaborate closely with the CEO and CTO to define technical milestones and adapt to evolving requirements.Work flexibly across different test environments and equipment, often under resource constraints typical of startups.QualificationsBachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Physics, or related field.2+ years of experience in a laboratory or R&D environment.Hands-on experience with vacuum systems, pumps, pressure gauges, and instrumentation.Familiarity with both electronics (circuits, sensors, wiring) and mechanical systems (fixtures, machining basics).Basic programming ability (Python, Arduino, or similar) to support automation and data collection.Strong troubleshooting skills and the ability to adapt quickly in a startup environment.Self-starter with the ability to work independently and think creatively about experiments and testing.Preferred ExperienceBackground in plasma physics, electric propulsion, or spacecraft propulsion systems.Prior experience in a space startup or early-stage hardware company.Direct experience setting up and running vacuum facility tests.Exposure to high-voltage systems, propulsion diagnostics, or spacecraft integration.Experience developing test plans and reports for government-funded R&D or aerospace customers.Cross-disciplinary skill set spanning electronics, software, and mechanical prototyping.Why Join UsWork side by side with the CEO and CTO in a highly visible, hands-on role.Help build experimental infrastructure and test campaigns from scratch.Be part of a small, venture-backed team with active government contracts and a clear growth trajectory.Gain equity and ownership in a company tackling one of the hardest problems in space technology.Enjoy the variety and challenge of a startup environment where no two days are the same.Compensation$85,000 - $130,000
