Work will consist of a wide range of progressively responsible maintenance tasks in the preventive maintenance, repair, and construction of State Maintained roads and roadside features. Work includes installing traffic and erosion control devices, operating a variety of hand and power tools, clearing right of way, performing preventive maintenance and repairs to pavements, shoulder maintenance, pipe installation or other drainage tasks, inventorying and tracking quantities used of materials, performing manual labor tasks, and the operation of assigned heavy equipment. Work will involve lifting up to 80 lbs. repeatedly. Work involves walking and standing for long periods of time, shoveling, raking, and sweeping. Workers will be exposed to all types of weather conditions. This position is subject to emergency callback, scheduled night work, and out-of-town travel during adverse weather or other extreme circumstances.Knowledge Skills And Abilities/Management PreferencesSalary Grade and Salary Range: NC05 / Salary Range: $32,639 - $57,117Management prefers applicants with the followingWorking knowledge of Work Zone Safety and Workplace safety policiesExperience in at least two pieces of Category B Maintenance equipment (asphalt distributor, asphalt mixer, asphalt patcher, crack sealing machine, ditching machine, force feed loader, front end loader, lube truck, asphalt maintainer, post driver, skid steer, street sweeper, tandem dump truck, tractor "A" boom mower, truck w/aerial device)Working knowledge of standard road maintenance and construction proceduresExperience performing drainage maintenance activities (such as shoulder and ditch maintenance, pipe installation, and drainage structures)Experience in one of the following: pipe installation, installation of erosion control devices, snow and ice removal, ditch maintenance or asphalt patchingWorkers will be expected to traverse steep and uneven terrain, work in extreme temperature conditions, perform manual labor road maintenance duties, and other assigned duties. Workers in this position will be expected to act upon both verbal and written communication to successfully complete assigned tasks. Safety toe shoes are needed for this position.A valid North Carolina Class A Commercial Driver's License with Tanker (N) endorsement will be required for employment. Either possession of a current Commercial Driver's License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver's License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire. Pre-employment drug testing is required for this position. As a condition of employment, a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be completed and signed allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past three years about controlled substances and alcohol testing.Minimum Education And ExperienceSome state job postings say you can qualify by an "equivalent combination of education and experience."
