Role SummaryWe are seeking an experienced upstream scientist to strengthen our USP team in Reykjavik.
This individual will take an integral role in driving cell culture operations, supporting scale-up activities, and ensuring our upstream processes remain robust, compliant, and inspection-ready. The position calls for a hands-on problem solver who thrives in a fast-moving environment and is comfortable leading from both the lab bench and the shop floor. ResponsibilitiesUphold cGMP and EHS requirements, keeping all upstream equipment and cleanroom environments in a state of readiness. Carry out cGMP tasks across CNC, D, and C classified areas. Prepare media and buffer solutions following established procedures. Act as a recognised process authority for USP:
drafting, reviewing, and approving SOPs, batch records, deviations, and CAPAs. Support validation work and execution of technical studies. Contribute to process scale-up, optimisation, and transfer of technologies. Oversee laboratory operations with a focus on compliance and quality. Provide training, mentorship, and guidance to junior colleagues. Play a supporting role during audits, regulatory submissions, and pre-approval inspections. Identify opportunities to streamline workflows and reduce waste. Step in for the USP Team Lead when necessary. Candidate ProfileAcademic background in a relevant scientific or engineering discipline (or equivalent industry experience). Minimum 5 years of experience in biologics or related fields (preferred).
Strong foundation in: Mammalian cell culture systems (CHO or similar) for recombinant protein / antibody production. Operating bioreactors and related upstream equipment. Technology transfer, scale-up, and process validation principles. Collaborative, adaptable, and able to assume leadership responsibilities when required.
