Fifa should be praised for endorsing peace | Letter

With reference to your editorial (Fifa’s new ‘peace prize’: Gianni Infantino should concentrate on the day job, 12 November), only Fifa could be criticised for recognising those who want world peace. As stated in a letter to the Guardian that you published online on 24 September, and ignored in this latest one-sided critique, Fifa is a not-for-profit organisation. The revenue it generates is reinvested in football, and all 211 member associations benefit from the commercial success of the Fifa World Cup. Fifa’s 11 strategic objectives are on its website. Since Mr Infantino became Fifa president in 2016, his “day job” has ensured that the organisation has generated more than $5bn to grow the game globally, an unprecedented amount, through Fifa Forward. From establishing and promoting a new Afghan Women United’s team to supporting the game’s growth in Cape Verde, Jordan, Uzbekistan and beyond, Fifa proudly promotes football development around the world. Fifa’s membership is clearly satisfied with Mr Infantino’s “day job”, as he was re-elected, unopposed, in 2023. Rather than be criticised for endorsing peace in a divided world, Fifa should be recognised for what it is – a global governing body that wants to make the future a brighter place.Bryan SwansonFifa director of media, Zurich • Have an opinion on anything you’ve read in the Guardian today?
