Fines issued for breaching Formentor road restrictions almost double

Figures for the traffic restrictions on the Formentor road indicate that the number of fines has almost doubled this year. In 2024, according to figures given by the Council of Mallorca the end of last October, there were 1,175 fines. This year the number has risen to 2,314. The period for the restrictions was extended by one month this year - to October 31 rather than September 30 - but even so the increase in fines is significant. They were mostly all (2,285) for unauthorised access of the section of the road between the beach and the lighthouse. The total number of vehicles that went to the beach area from June 1 to October 31 was 297,137. This figure included journeys by TIB buses. Excluding these, the figure was 258,364. An increase would have been expected because of the month's extension, but it wasn't great in overall terms; in 2024 there were 244,813 from June 1 to September 30. Pollensa Town Hall succeeded in getting the traffic directorate to agree to a month's extension this year. The town hall would ideally like the restrictions to start from the first of May or perhaps even from April. In Puerto Pollensa there is barrier control for vehicle access, which is determined by availability of spaces in the car park that serves the beach.
