I paid £11 for a sandwich in a swanky Welsh neighbourhood - there was nothing posh about my reaction

I used to be one of those who bought a fancy coffee and sandwich a few times a week in the olden days when we worked at the office way more than many of us do now. But for the most part, especially due to where I live, it's a homemade ham and coleslaw or even yoghurt and fruit thrown together during a busy work day. I lie, the other day I cooked a pizza. But the other day I went completely rogue after a work meeting and found myself at the mercy of a Cardiff neighbourhood's daytime eating places. From superstar gigs to cosy pubs, find out What’s On in Wales by signing up to our newsletter here I'm not being mean, but Pontcanna's coffee shops and cafes just have a power over me unlike anything else and my will power goes right out the Cathedral Road three-storey terrace window. After visiting the small-but-perfectly formed Canna Deli just off King's Road a few weeks previously I had spotted a bowl filled to the brim with a most delicious-looking, homemade Coronation chicken. At this point I had my mind set on breakfast but the piled-high salad option just stuck in my mind. I really like Coronation chicken, but it can be done so very poorly in so many places. So therefore this remained in my hippocampus and will do so, probably forever. Especially after I ate it. Yes, it was £11.50. Yes, I did do a slight, wide-darty-eyed movement and half laugh as I tapped my card, while thinking "should I be paying this much for a weekday sandwich I am most likely going to eat by my desk?' Or 'should I have gone for the fritatta?' What can I say, I am easily distracted. I'm also no stranger to drawing an over-the-top joy from a sandwich, after all I'll always eat the same one en route to Pembrokeshire every time - read more about that sandwich, here. This Coronation chicken creation from Canna Deli was a beautifully put-together, simple lunch with A-list ingredients. And another thing, it was literally the size of my head. So huge, I split it over two days in fact. The chicken was abundant in the mix, which wasn't overly mayonnaisey that can quite often be the case with sandwich fillings. The pulled meat tasted of great quality - not bland - and stood firm against the gently spiced curry flavour. Said curry flavour sauce had very evenly proportioned elements of - probably mayo, but might have a second, lighter white condiment mixed into it? - the sauciness and curry with the odd sultana whipped up an unctous, mouth-watering sandwich filling. Here's where I cried "oh wow" - or maybe 'bloody hell!' when I opened the takeaway box to get a sneaky bite in the car before setting off home. It was like it had been filled by a builder steadily trowelling a slick of cement onto a brick. The brick aka a softly chewy and fresh-out-the-oven homely ciabatta and it was topped off with a good portion of salad leaves and tomato - cut up in a managable size! It still burst out of the sides at the slightest squeeze, though - a la a savoury custard slice. The last lot of Coronation chicken I enjoyed was back in 2002-ish when there was a Cathays cafe called - Haveabyte, it was an internet cafe, remember them? Anyway, I'd often rued the lack of the dish in my life since then - a bloody good one at least. So no, I have no regrets in spending my cash on Canna Deli's Coronation chicken sandwich - it was well-worth it. From the high quality of the ingredients and eye-popping size to the magnificence of its taste, flavour and all-round yumminess. I'd buy it again goddammnit! Outside of this sandwich, Canna Deli is a solid gold place to visit for coffee and cake, breakfast and lunch. Their Rye Me Up breakfast is a great example of serving an egg and salmon brunch that stands apart in the bountiful brunch scene of the area. It's a soft boiled egg on a big crumble of Black Mountain hot smoked salmon and rye toast. You can also get huge cheesy, pulled pork burritos that aren't far off the size of your head, either. Stand aside flimsy wraps - this bad boy trumps you. (They tasted awesome as well) Again, the quality of produce is standout. Since I started writing this review, Canna Deli has been targeted in a break-in that saw the front door smashed and cash register and float, taken. So if you haven't already, get out and support them - they have loads of cakes and coffee if you don't want to have a big lunch. Same encouragement goes for supporting any independent business at the moment in any community. They all need your support. Find Canna Deli at Pontcanna Mews, Kings Road, Cardiff.
