Over 100 social media activists of radical Islamist party arrested in Pakistan

Lahore, Oct 23 (PTI) Pakistan’s anti-cybercrime agency has arrested over 100 social media activists of a radical Islamist party — Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) — for inflammatory posts, a provincial minister said on Thursday. “We have arrested 107 social media activists (of TLP) for inflammatory posts besides blocking 75 such accounts,” Punjab Information Minister Azma Bokhari told a press conference here. Around 16 people including policemen were killed and over 1,600 injured in clashes between the police and supporters of TLP at Muridke, some 60 km from Lahore, last week. Punjab police claim to have arrested over 6,000 TLP activists so far following last week’s violent clashes over the issue of holding an anti-Israel demonstration outside the US embassy in Islamabad. The government has so far sealed 61 seminaries run by the radical Islamist party. The Auqaf Department of the Punjab government has also been given control of all TLP mosques and seminaries. The TLP claimed that dozens of its supporters were killed while thousands injured as police opened fire straight on the “unarmed” protesters who wanted to express their solidarity with the people of Palestine. The Punjab government has already recommended a ban on the TLP to the federal government, and an official source told PTI that the federal cabinet obliged the request and placed a ban on the party. Minister Bokhari further said the government has identified 3,600 financial backers of the TLP both inside and outside the country, and that weapons seized from police in 2021 by this extremist group were also used in recent violent protests. She warned that the Punjab government will make it impossible for anyone who takes up arms against the state to operate freely, stressing that the writ of the state is supreme and there will be no compromise on the protection of citizens’ lives and property. The minister called for the immediate surrender of all illegal weapons and warned that anyone involved in incitement or violence will be booked under the cyber laws. She announced that licences for 28 arms dealers have already been suspended, and no new arms licences will be issued in the Punjab province. PTI MZ GRS GRS GRS

Mandhana, Rawal, Rodrigues fire India to 340/3 against New Zealand

Navi Mumbai, Oct 23 (PTI) Imperious hundreds by Smriti Mandhana (105) and Pratika Rawal (122) along with Jemimah Rodrigues’ rapid unbeaten 76 fired India to a daunting 340 for three against New Zealand in their rain-affected Women’s World Cup match, here on Thursday. India’s progression was affected by a rain break which caused a 90 minutes delay, and the contest was truncated to 49 overs per side later. With qualification for semifinals at stake and coming off a three-match losing streak, India cashed in on a benign track to register the highest score of the tournament led by Mandhana. Rawal made it count with her first World Cup hundred, which was made in a conventional manner, while forging two big partnerships — a record 212 runs with Mandhana for the first wicket and 76 runs with Rodrigues for the second. Rodrigues, who was dropped from the last match as India favoured a sixth bowler, unleashed a flurry of fours to make the fastest fifty of this World Cup from 39 balls, eventually finishing with a 55-ball 76 with 11 fours. Mandhana (109 off 95 balls, 10x4s, 4x6s) looked to be peaking at the right time with her third World Cup ton, first of this edition, with a spectacular six over cover off spinner Eden Carson, giving early indications of her prime form. In hot and humid conditions, Mandhana and Rawal did not take too long to make New Zealand realise that perhaps it wasn’t the right call to ask India bat first. While New Zealand began well with tidy spells, it all unravelled soon for the White Ferns who were sent on a leather hunt. Mandhana was the aggressor among the two as her rich array of strokes — from delicate late-cuts to powerful strokes on the on-side — proved why she has been in a different league among Indian batters. Mandhana’s 14th ODI ton was also her fifth in this calendar year as she also moved closer to breaking Australian great Meg Lanning’s record for most ODI centuries for any player (15). With a resolute Rawal in tow, Mandhana raced to her third consecutive fifty in the 18th over and also brought up their century stand, which was their seventh overall in only 23 innings. In fact, the partnership of 212 for the first wicket was not only the best for any wicket across the eight teams in this World Cup, but also for any wicket for India in World Cup history. Rawal proved her credentials as a perfect foil to Mandhana, displaying commendable resolve to make her maiden World Cup ton and second three-figure knock overall. The right-hander also displayed her intent to make it count with a big contribution even though she had 63 dot balls in her 134-ball 122, which was studded with 13 fours and two sixes. She eventually walked back in the 43rd over. Rodrigues certainly provided the missing spunk at No. 3 as her brisk knock took the flight away from New Zealand who had managed their first breakthrough in the 34th over with the wicket of Mandhana. Rodrigues was deft in both rotation of strike and picking boundaries on either side of the wicket while taking a liking for Eden Carson, who was hit for three fours in the 46th over. PTI DDV UNG

Malaria, dengue cases dip in Delhi; domestic breeding checkers' strike continues

New Delhi, Oct 23 (PTI) Delhi has recorded 551 malaria cases, 991 dengue cases, and 104 chikungunya infections this year so far, with malaria and dengue showing a decline compared to last year, according to official data. Chikungunya infections have seen an uptick — from 83 during the same period in 2024 and 29 in 2023. No deaths have been reported from any of these vector-borne diseases this year. The number of malaria cases this year has been lower than the 587 recorded during the same period in 2024 but higher than figures for 2023 (346), 2022 (182), and 2021 (138). Cases increased incrementally from January (9) to October (180), peaking in the post-monsoon months of August (100), September (136), and October (180). The Central, West, and Shahdara (South) zones reported the highest incidence of malaria cases. With 991 cases logged until October 18 this year, the count for dengue has seen a sharp decline — from 2,587 during the same period last year and 4,440 in 2023. Officials attributed the decline to increased surveillance and anti-larval measures. The number of chikungunya cases this year — 104 till mid-October — has been higher than 83 in 2024 and 29 in 2023. Most infections were reported between July and September this year, with September alone accounting for 43 cases. Meanwhile, outside the Civic Centre MCD office, Multi-Tasking Staff (MTS), including Domestic Breeding Checkers (DBC), have been on strike for 25 days, for three key demands. “First, equal pay; second, medical leave, since we do dangerous work; and third, job security for the family in case a worker dies. These are the three basic demands, but none of them have been fulfilled yet,” a protesting worker told PTI. A nine-member committee was formed to address their grievances, but no conclusion has been reached. Mayor Raja Iqbal Singh said on October 14 that the committee — chaired by the mayor and including representatives from ruling and opposition parties, as well as MTS employees — would aim to reach a decision within 24 hours. No resolution has been reported so far. The striking worker said, “Officials are only asking us to end our protest, but there has been no commitment regarding our demands.” A meeting was held on Wednesday with the central government’s labour department, including the Assistant Labour Commissioner, but the outcome remains unclear, the worker said. According to him, the management was advised during the meeting to expedite the committee’s proceedings and submit a report within 10 days to the Conciliation Officer. The unions have refused to call off the strike until the report’s recommendations are implemented. MCD Standing Committee Chairperson Satya Sharma said, “We held a meeting but could not reach a mutual agreement as we cannot accept all their demands. Another meeting will be held on Friday, and the committee will try its best to resolve the matter.” PTI NSM PRK PRK

Kerala govt backed brewery project in Palakkad village faces stiff opposition

Palakkad(Kerala), Oct 23 (PTI) A Kerala government-backed proposal to set up a liquor plant in Elappully village here is facing stiff opposition from the panchayat, which recently held a grama sabha to collect signatures against the project. The village panchayat is to explore a legal route to stop the project. However, the state government appears unfazed by the panchayat’s initiative. Local Self Government and Excise Minister M B Rajesh said on Thursday that the panchayat was “not an independent sovereign republic” and was subject to the laws of the land. He said that the brewery project was approved by the state cabinet, subject to it getting all necessary permissions. “If it gets all the requisite permissions, there is no hurdle against its establishment under the government policy,” he said, adding that “everything will happen in accordance with the law”. The Elappully panchayat, on the other hand, is planning to strongly oppose the project, claiming it would adversely affect the environment and agriculture of the village and the surrounding area within a 15-kilometre radius. Elappully panchayat president Revathi Babu told a TV channel on Thursday that in a recent special grama sabha held in one of the 22 wards of the village, hundreds of people, including LDF members, participated and the majority of them signed the resolution to oppose the project. She said that similar special grama sabhas will be held in other wards and more signatures of the people would be collected. Babu also said that two panchayat members have already joined as parties in a case in the Kerala High Court opposing the brewery project. Besides that, the panchayat has also decided to initiate litigation against the project, she added. The panchayat president also requested the CPI ministers in the state government to strongly oppose the project from inside as it was not in the interests of the people of the village. The state cabinet, in January, had approved a proposal by Oasis Commercial Pvt Ltd to set up the liquor plant, subject to compliance with existing guidelines and conditions, in Elappully village. In February, the Palakkad Revenue Divisional Office (RDO) had rejected the company’s application for conversion of the paddy field for industrial purposes, as it is not permitted under the Kerala Conservation of Paddy Land and Wetland Act. Preparations on war footing for Chhath Puja at over 1,300 ghats: Delhi minister

New Delhi, Oct 23 (PTI) The government is making preparations on a war footing to organise Chhath Puja at more than 1,300 ghats across the city, with special arrangements along the Yamuna river, Delhi minister Kapil Mishra said on Thursday. Lieutenant Governor V K Saxena and Culture Minister Mishra inspected the Vasudev Ghat and reviewed the ongoing preparations, according to an official statement. They directed officials to ensure that arrangements related to cleanliness, lighting, security and traffic management are completed in time so that devotees do not face any inconvenience, it said. Mishra said this year’s Chhath Puja celebrations will be the most extensive ever organised in the national capital. “Our goal is to provide devotees with a clean, safe and culturally enriching experience,” he said, adding that preparations are being carried out on an unprecedented scale. The minister said this would be the first Chhath Puja organised under the leadership of Chief Minister Rekha Gupta and that devotees will be able to perform rituals along the Yamuna banks. “This is not a government that only talks, it delivers. The promise of enabling worship along the Yamuna banks is being fulfilled. It is a matter of pride for Delhi that devotees will now be able to perform traditional rituals there,” he said. Mishra further said that the previous government had not permitted Chhath Puja along the Yamuna for several years. “The people of Purvanchal will now celebrate their festival with pride and self-respect,” he added. The Delhi government has stated that arrangements at all ghats will be completed before the start of the festival, which is expected to witness large gatherings of devotees across the city. Chhath Puja, a four-day festival dedicated to the Sun God and Chhathi Maiya, will be celebrated from October 25 to October 28 this year. PTI SHB SHB KVK KVK KVK

Pakistan court sentences man to death for killing mother, three sisters

Lahore, Oct 23 (PTI) In a case of honour killing, a Pakistani court has sentenced a 21-year-old man to death for murdering his mother and three sisters, a court official said on Thursday. The gruesome incident took place in Kabirwala, around 290 km from Lahore, in June last year. “Additional District and Sessions Judge Sajjad Hussain Baloch (Kabirwala) awarded a death sentence to Muhammad Abbas, 21, on four counts in light of evidence against him”, said the court official. “The suspect had also confessed to having killed his mother and three sisters for disgracing the family honour,” he added. According to the prosecution, Abbas shot and killed his three sisters while they were working on the farmland. He later returned home and killed his mother. Investigators said Abbas had doubts about the character of his mother and sisters. The killings once again highlight the continuing menace of honour crimes in Pakistan, where women are often targeted by family members. According to the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan, between 2004 and 2016, as many as 15,222 incidents of honour killings – 1,170 every year – were recorded. “Nationwide, the numbers are likely much higher. Research shows that honour killings are primarily perpetrated by family members and that, as a result, people do not come forward to report incidents. Such disputes are instead settled outside of the court system. Further, in some segments of society, there is a level of support for the perpetrators: the criminality of these murders is not recognised within the social and cultural contexts in which they occur,” it says.
