Elaborate arrangements at Bihar stations to handle Chhath rush: Railways

Patna, Oct 23 (PTI) Elaborate arrangements have been made in all stations in the Hajipur-headquartered East Central Railway (ECR) zone in view of the heavy rush of passengers during Chhath Puja, a senior official said. ECR General Manager Chhatrasal Singh on Wednesday said the priority of the railways is to facilitate the smooth arrival and departure of travellers, and ensure their safety by preventing any untoward incidents. “The number of Chhath special trains has been increased from 7,500 to 12,000 this year. A large number of people are expected to visit Bihar in the coming days to celebrate Chhath. The preparations for their arrival are already complete. However, the real challenge will arise when they return to their workplaces after the festival,” he said. “The window for the return is narrow, but for that too, preparations are in the last stage,” he added. Singh said the construction of holding areas at all major terminals will be completed by Thursday night, following which the ECR will conduct a “dress rehearsal” of arrangements. “There will be centralised monitoring from Patliputra Rail Complex. Similar systems have been put in place in the offices of all the divisions to monitor traffic at stations,” he said. Singh said the number of special trains has been substantially increased this year in the zone, enabling people to reach even remote destinations solely by the railways. “Many unannounced trains will be run from major terminals in case a large number of people without reservations turn up,” he said. Singh said more security personnel will be deployed during Chhath Puja this year. “We have firmly resolved to ensure safe and smooth travelling during and after Chhath. Railway personnel are actively engaged in this pursuit,” he added. PTI SUK PKD SOM ACD

Asian Markets Retreat On Potential New US Trade Curb Against China

Asian stocks fell for a second day on Thursday as lacklustre earnings reports from tech megacap stocks deepened a selloff on Wall Street, while U.S. sanctions against Russia and China revived fears around geopolitics. Oil prices surged. MSCI’s broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan was last off 0.3%, while Japan’s Nikkei 225 sank 1.5%. Chinese stocks declined 0.4% in Hong Kong after Reuters reported the White House is considering a plan to curb an array of software-powered exports to China to retaliate against Beijing’s latest round of rare earth export restrictions. “With no fresh macro data to anchor sentiment, investors are leaning defensive while Trump’s Asia visit stirs geopolitical nerves,” said Charu Chanana, chief investment strategist at Saxo Bank in Singapore. “The chatter around U.S. software export curbs to China has hit tech sentiment right where it hurts, and renewed sanctions on Russia are a reminder that geopolitical risks aren’t going away either.” Global equity markets are easing off record highs as corporate earnings season kicks off. While results or outlooks from the megacaps have disappointed investors, most of the companies that have reported so far have beaten analysts’ estimates. South Korean stocks fell 0.2% after the Bank of Korea kept rates on hold, as expected by analysts polled by Reuters. Brent crude was last up 2.3% at $64 per barrel after U.S. President Donald Trump on Wednesday imposed Ukraine-related sanctions for the first time in his second term, targeting Russian oil companies Lukoil and Rosneft. The move came the same day as EU countries approved a 19th package of sanctions on Moscow that included a ban on Russian liquefied natural gas imports. U.S. crude oil, gasoline and distillate inventories fell last week as refining activity and demand strengthened, the Energy Information Administration said on Wednesday. S&P 500 e-mini futures edged up 0.1% after a second day of declines for U.S. stocks overnight as earnings reports from tech megacaps underwhelmed analysts on Wall Street. Netflix shares fell more than 10% on Wednesday as the streaming giant’s outlook for the coming quarter left investors nonplussed. Tesla shares fell 3.8% in after-hours trading after reporting profit that failed to live up to analysts’ expectations, despite record third-quarter revenue that beat estimates. Apple shares fell 1.6% after the tech giant was hit with a complaint to EU antitrust regulators by two civil rights groups on Wednesday over the terms and conditions of its App Store and devices for allegedly breaching landmark rules aimed at reining in Big Tech. The yield on the U.S. 10-year Treasury bond was last steady at 3.955%, up 0.2 basis point compared with a previous close of 3.953%. Investors believe further policy easing from the Federal Reserve is a near-certainty. Fed funds futures imply a 96.7% probability of a 25-basis points cut to interest rates at the U.S. central bank’s meeting on October 29, compared with a 98.3% chance on Wednesday, according to the CME Group’s FedWatch tool. The U.S. dollar index, which measures the greenback’s strength against a basket of six currencies, was last trading 0.1% firmer at 99.03. Gold was last down 0.6% at $4,071.09 per ounce, with prices closing in on the $4,000 mark in early Asian trading as investors booked profits ahead of U.S. inflation data due this week.

India Vs Australia 2nd ODI: Adelaide Weather Promises Clear Skies

After a rain-interrupted game in Perth, fierce rivals India and Australia move to the iconic Adelaide Oval for the second ODI of the series on Thursday, October 23. Intermittent rains in the first half dealt India an unfair blow as Shubman Gill’s men found no momentum to their innings and finished with an underpar score, which the hosts chased down. As the weather spiced up the pitch in Perth, premier seamers Josh Hazlewood and Mitchell Starc found extra lift and seam movement off their deliveries. The duo ruined the comebacks of giants Rohit Sharma (8) and Virat Kohli (0), sending them back in the first eight overs of play. While an in-form Gill seemed to have the measure of the conditions, he was unfortunate to edge one down the leg of third seamer Nathan Ellis on 10. From there, India never found any rhythm to their innings amidst frustrating weather conditions. The visitors were forced to up the ante immediately after each resumption due to the reduction in overs and lost wickets in the process. Of the rest of the batters, wicketkeeper-batter KL Rahul (38) and all-rounder Axar Patel (31) were the only ones who seemed to have some control. Once India finished 136/9 off their 26 overs with the bat, the result was a foregone conclusion. Luckier of the two sides, Australia enjoyed the best of the weather conditions and could bat with a clear tempo. Australia did lose Travis Head (8) and Matthew Short (8) early in the chase, but skipper Mitchell Marsh’s unbeaten 46 and free-flowing innings from Josh Philippe (37) and Matt Renshaw (21*) steered them through with the best part of five overs remaining. The result in Perth has given Australia the chance to seal the ODI series with another victory in Adelaide, where India will be hoping to bounce back strongly. Adelaide Weather Forecast The forecast is for clear skies and only occasionally overcast scenes during the match hours in Adelaide. Temperatures are expected to hover between 11 degrees Celsius and 15 degrees Celsius in what are still very early days of the Australian summer, with humidity nudging close to 80 per cent and the wind exceeding speeds of 10 km/hour. Fans can expect a full game, which gives the two sides a fair opportunity to showcase their mettle.

Houthis release 5 Yemeni UN staffers in Sanaa after weekend detention at offices

Aden, Oct 20 (AP) Houthi rebels released five Yemeni United Nations staff members, and allowed 15 international ones to move freely within the UN compound, after detaining them there in Sanaa over the weekend, a UN spokesperson said Monday. Stéphane Dujarric also said Houthi security forces had left the compound after the latest of such raids on international organisations. The Houthis have a long-running crackdown against the UN and others working in Yemen’s rebel-held areas including Sanaa, the coastal city of Hodeida and the stronghold in Sadaa province in the north. The rebels have repeatedly claimed, without evidence, that the detained UN staff and employees of other organisations and embassies were spies, allegations the UN has denied. Dozens of people have been detained. A World Food Program worker died in detention earlier this year in Sadaa. Funeral for military chief Earlier Monday, the Iran-backed rebels held a funeral for their military chief of staff who was killed in a recent Israeli strike, with more than 1,000 people gathered in Sanaa. The Houthis acknowledged last week that Maj. Gen. Muhammad Abdul Karim al-Ghamari was killed in an Israeli airstrike along with other rebel leaders. The Houthis did not say when the strike took place. The death further escalated tensions between the rebels and Israel. Nearly two months ago, Israeli airstrikes killed senior Houthi government officials in Sanaa, including their prime minister, Ahmed al-Rahawi. The Houthis said al-Ghamari was killed along with his 13-year-old son, Hussain, and “several of his companions,” according to the rebel-controlled SABA news agency, which didn’t provide further details. Many in the funeral crowd on Monday vented their anger at Israel. One mourner, Ayham Hassan, said “Israel is the biggest enemy for Arabs and Muslims.” He spoke to The Associated Press by phone from Sanaa. The UN sanctioned al-Ghamari for his “leading role in orchestrating the Houthis’ military efforts that are directly threatening the peace, security and stability of Yemen, as well as cross-border attacks against Saudi Arabia.” The US Treasury sanctioned him in 2021 for his responsibility in “orchestrating attacks by Houthi forces impacting Yemeni civilians” and said he had been trained by Lebanon’s militant Hezbollah group and Iran’s paramilitary Revolutionary Guard. The US and Israel had launched an air and naval campaign against the Houthis in response to the rebels’ missile and drone attacks on Israel and on ships in the Red Sea. The Houthis have said they are acting in solidarity with the Palestinians over the war in Gaza. Their attacks over the past two years have upended shipping in the Red Sea, through which about USD 1 trillion of goods pass each year. (AP) GSP

Shaheen Afridi replaces Mohammad Rizwan as Pakistan ODI captain

New Delhi [India], October 20 (ANI): In a major development, Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has removed Mohammad Rizwan from the role of ODI captain, appointing pacer Shaheen Shah Afridi as his replacement. The announcement came shortly after the end of the first day’s play of the ongoing Rawalpindi Test against South Africa, a match that features both Rizwan and Afridi, as per ESPNcricinfo. The PCB did not cite any reason for Rizwan’s removal, nor did it mention his name in the official statement. According to the board, the decision was taken following a meeting in Islamabad between the selection committee and Pakistan’s white-ball head coach, Mike Hesson. Rizwan’s removal, however, seemed imminent. Over the weekend, the PCB had released a statement that pointedly declining to confirm him as the ODI captain. The move to replace Rizwan was not solely driven by Hesson but had broader support from senior PCB officials involved in the decision-making process. For Afridi, this marks another chapter in his leadership journey. His previous stint as captain in the white-ball format did not go as planned, he led Pakistan in the T20I series against New Zealand in January 2024, which the team lost 4-1. Soon after, PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi refrained from confirming his continuation as captain, and a week later, Babar Azam was reinstated as skipper. (ANI)

Bihar polls: Lalu Prasad's elder son Tej Pratap booked for MCC violation

Hajipur (Bihar), Oct 19 (PTI) RJD supremo Lalu Prasad’s elder son and Janshakti Janta Dal chief Tej Pratap Yadav has been booked for violating the model code of conduct (MCC) during the filing of his nomination papers from the Mahua assembly seat in Bihar’s Vaishali district, police said on Sunday According to a statement issued by the district police, the Circle Officer of Mahua lodged a complaint with the police station concerned after a video, which went viral on social media, showed Yadav using a SUV, bearing a police logo and a beacon light, during a procession for submitting his documents on October 16. “It was thoroughly examined and found that the police logo and beacon light used on the vehicle were a private one. Therefore, a case was registered for violation of the election code of conduct,” it said. Yadav floated the party after being expelled from the RJD on May 25 by his father for six years, as he reportedly confessed to being ‘in a relationship‘ with a woman. He, however, deleted the Facebook post later with a claim that his page was ‘hacked’. Lalu Prasad also disowned Tej Pratap due to his “irresponsible behaviour”. A few days later, after his expulsion from the RJD, Tej Pratap Yadav had alleged that there was a “conspiracy” to drive a wedge between him and his younger brother Tejashwi Yadav. He had voiced his sentiments in a couple of posts on his X handle, blaming the crisis on ‘Jaichand’, a metaphor for traitors. PTI PKD BDC
