Central Railway GM Vijay Kumar passes away

Mumbai, Nov 11 (PTI) Central Railway (CR) General Manager Vijay Kumar, who assumed charge just over a month ago, passed away in Mumbai in the early hours of Tuesday, officials said. Preliminary medical opinion suggested a possible cardiac arrest in sleep as the cause of death, but the exact cause will be ascertained after the post-mortem examination, railway officials said. Kumar was rushed to the Jaslok Hospital in Mumbai, where doctors declared him dead, a CR spokesperson said. Kumar, an officer of the 1988 batch of the Indian Railway Service of Mechanical Engineers (IRSME), assumed charge as the General Manager of the CR on October 1, 2025. Railway officials said the last rites will be performed on Wednesday morning at the Chandanwadi crematorium in Marine Lines in south Mumbai. Before moving to the CR, Kumar served as the general manager of Chittaranjan Locomotive Works (CLW), where he led the production of a record 700 locomotives in 2024-25. The CLW has already dispatched 417 locomotives in the first six months towards an ambitious target of 777, during the current financial year, as per the officials. Over his 35-year career, Kumar held several key posts across the Indian Railways, including in the Railway Board, Northern Railway, North Western Railway and Research Design and Standards Organisation (RDSO). He had also contributed to the National High Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL) as executive director and director (rolling stock). Kumar played a role in the semi-high-speed corridor development and supervised speed trials of the Spanish-designed Talgo trains during his stint in the Railway Board, the officials said. He is survived by his wife, a son and a daughter. “Central Railway mourns the loss of a noble soul, an efficient administrator, and an inspiring leader whose contributions to Indian Railways will always be remembered amongst us,” the CR said in a release. Meanwhile, Western Railway (WR) General Manager Vivek Kumar Gupta was given the additional charge of CR general manager in the wake of Vijay Kumar’s death. Gupta, who is an officer of the Indian Railway Service of Engineers (IRSE) of the 1988 batch, took over the charge as the CR general manager. PTI KK GK NP

‘Pran Jaaye, Par Dosti Na Jaaye’: UP Man’s Friend Falls In Love With Woman Who ‘Married Mason’ — Then A Murder!

A woman killed her husband with the help of her lover and his friend in Meerut’s Rasulpur Rohta village, leaving the locals stunned. Kajal, the woman, first gave her husband, Anil, sleeping pills after he objected to her relationship, police said. When he became unconscious, she called her lover, Akash, and his friend Badal. The trio then strangled Anil with a dupatta and threw him into the Siwalkhas Ganga canal. Kajal later pretended that her husband had gone missing. Anil, a 32-year-old mason, was reported missing on October 25. His elder brother, Raju, filed a complaint at the Rohta police station the next day. Based on call records and surveillance, police suspected Kajal, Akash, and Badal’s involvement. On November 5, Raju also lodged a kidnapping case against them. Acting on a tip, Rohta police arrested Akash and Badal near Rasulpur Madhi Government School. After interrogation, Kajal was also taken into custody. During questioning, the accused revealed that Kajal called the two men around 2 am after Anil fell unconscious. Together, they transported him to the canal and went ahead with the plan to kill him. SP Rural Abhijeet Kumar said Kajal and Akash had been in a relationship for two years. When Anil opposed it, they conspired with Badal to eliminate him. Kajal reportedly gave Anil six sleeping pills mixed with his food that night. Akash got the pills from a local market. Police recovered Kajal’s dupatta used in the crime near the Siwalkhas Ganganahar bridge. The remaining pills were found hidden in her house. Divers have been deployed to search the Ganga canal. Police have also contacted Ghaziabad authorities about unidentified bodies found downstream. All three accused have been presented in court and sent to jail.

India, US holding continuous discussions for bilateral trade agreement: Goyal

Auckland, Nov 5 (PTI) Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal on Wednesday said India and the US are holding continuous discussions for the proposed bilateral trade agreement. “Talks are going well…and are continuously going on. ..kaee samvedanasheel mudde hai, kaee gambheer mudde hai, toh svaabhaavik hai ki thoda samay lagega (There are many sensitive issues, many serious issues, so it is natural that it will take some time),” he told reporters here. He was replying to a question about the progress on India-US negotiations on the pact. Goyal is here on a four-day official visit. He is leading a business delegation. Five rounds of talks have been completed so far for the first phase of the bilateral trade agreement between the US and India. A team of Indian officials, headed by Commerce Secretary Rajesh Agrawal, was in Washington last month to hold trade talks with their US counterparts. The three-day talks ended on October 17. In February this year, leaders of India and the US directed officials to negotiate a proposed Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA). They have fixed a deadline to conclude the first tranche of the pact by the fall of 2025. These deliberations are important, as relations between the two countries have been under severe strain since the US President Donald Trump administration imposed a steep 50 per cent tariff on Indian goods. It includes a 25 per cent additional import duty for buying Russian crude oil. The proposed pact aims to more than double the bilateral trade to USD 500 billion by 2030 from the current USD 191 billion. The US remained India’s largest trading partner for the fourth consecutive year in 2024-25, with bilateral trade valued at USD 131.84 billion (USD 86.5 billion exports). It accounts for about 18 per cent of India’s total goods exports, 6.22 per cent in imports, and 10.73 per cent in the country’s total merchandise trade. India’s merchandise exports to the US declined by 11.93 per cent to USD 5.46 billion in September due to the high tariffs imposed by Washington, while imports increased by 11.78 per cent to USD 3.98 billion during the month, according to the Commerce Ministry data.
