Andhra Pradesh speeds up Polavaram-Banakacherla project as Telangana stays silent

Hyderabad: With the Congress government in Telangana turning almost silent in its response to the Polavaram-Banakacherla link, Andhra Pradesh has fast-tracked groundwork on the project. AP is eyeing the initial diversion of Godavari waters to Rayalaseema by 2027, coinciding with the Godavari Pushkarams. As of October 5, the Detailed Project Report (DPR) awaits Central Water Commission scrutiny, with AP Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu directing officials to accelerate Polavaram's core works, the diaphragm wall at 58 percent completion, and the earth dam slated for December 2027. Naidu stated recently that the PBLP was "within legal limits" as per the Godavari Water Disputes Tribunal (GWDT) award and benefits both AP and Telangana by utilising surplus waters of 3,700 TMC wasted into the sea this year. AP officials have been tasked with the job of fast-tracking the clearance for the project and are engaged with the Ministry of Jal Shakti to fulfil Naidu's dream of diverting 200 TMC of Godavari water from the Polavaram reservoir to a new reservoir at Banakacherla in Kurnool district. Naidu also announced that the Centre had approved the initiative and urged Telangana to join hands for mutual benefit. "This isn't about one State winning, it is about harnessing nature's gift before it slips away," Naidu said, while calling the PBLP the first phase of a Godavari-Krishna-Penna interlinking vision. Environmentalists and civil society groups, including voices from within Andhra, have raised concerns over the Nallamala tunnel's potential to damage biodiversity hotspots and displace Adivasi communities. Telangana Irrigation Minister N Uttam Kumar Reddy had vowed to "fight tooth and nail" against the project, accusing Andhra of flouting GWDT clauses that require downstream consent for diversions. The State argued the PBLP would siphon off 200 TMC from its rightful share. Telangana also countered it with a cost-effective alternative, the Rs.10,000 crore Inchampalli-Godavari link, described as a "fair alternative utilising surplus waters without affecting Rayalaseema's needs or Nallamala's fragile ecosystem". But since that August 26 proposal, Telangana's official channels have gone silent on the PBLP. The high-level central committee formed in mid-July to mediate inter-state water issues has yet to release its findings. On September 24, Karnataka demanded 64.75 TMC from the Krishna basin if the Centre had given its approval to the PBLP, citing 1978 pacts and GWDT Clause V(C) to claim compensatory flows. "Andhra cannot monopolise 423 TMC of Godavari diversions without ripple effects," Karnataka officials wrote to Union Minister CR Patil. Despite Telangana's earlier proposal to approach the Supreme Court if necessary, the State now appears unsure, or perhaps has chosen to remain silent, about Chandrababu Naidu's recent efforts in New Delhi to push the project by all means.

US pharma giant Eli Lilly chooses Telangana to invest over USD 1 billion

Hyderabad: Telangana has secured an investment of USD 1 billion from US pharma major Eli Lilly to expand its manufacturing and global medicine supply capacity in Hyderabad. The announcement was made after a delegation from the company met Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy and Industries Minister D Sridhar Babu at the Integrated Command Control Centre here on Monday. The company inaugurated its Global Capability Centre (GCC) in Hyderabad in August this year. Despite strong interest from several other states, Eli Lilly chose Telangana owing to the favourable ecosystem, availability of skilled manpower, infrastructure, and proactive government support, according to an official press release. The USD 1 billion investment by Eli Lilly reflects the company’s interest in Telangana beyond its GCC operations and focuses on developing new medicines to treat diabetes and obesity, Alzheimer’s disease, cancer and autoimmune conditions. With the setting up of the new facilities, Eli Lilly is set to manufacture in Telangana and supply globally. Sridhar Babu said Lilly’s expansion in Hyderabad was a testament to Telangana’s dynamic industrial landscape and its growing prominence in advanced healthcare manufacturing.

Lack of support from EPFO leaves pensioner in confusion

Lack of support from EPFO leaves pensioner in confusion

To put it simply, the Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) mainly has the goal of providing social security and welfare to employees after they retire, that is, in their old age. To this end, it collects a certain amount from the employee’s monthly salary. The EPFO is part of India’s social security system, ensuring the financial stability of employees. Operating under the Ministry of Labour and Employment, Government of India, the organisation is responsible for regulating and managing provident funds across the country, along with the Employees' State Insurance. The contribution to this organisation is collected from the monthly salary. The problem arises from the fact that it is mandatory and deducted from the salary without explicit consent from the employee. Many employees are unaware of the benefits of this contribution or how to use it when needed, as they are not properly informed about the terms and conditions of the deduction. As a result, the employee is often at the mercy of EPFO officials handling the accounts. Take my case for example. In brief, the problem is this. I have an EPS-95 certificate issued in 2011, which entitles me to receive a monthly pension from 2021. However, I do not know how to use this certificate and have not received proper guidance despite trying all available helplines and offices, including the Commissioner’s office in New Delhi. I left service with a company in 2011, where I had worked for more than 10 years. As part of my retiral benefits, I received the Employees’ Pension Scheme 1995 (EPS-95) certificate, which I am supposed to use after 14 June 2021 on attaining the age of 58 years. This certificate was issued from the Gurgaon office. I do not know how to use this certificate. I raised a grievance with the EPFO under Registration Number HRGGN/E/2024/34144 on 26 July 2024, but did not receive any guidance. I am residing in Hyderabad and visited the EPFO office here, but did not get any help. I called the Central Provident Fund Commissioner (CPFC), Chief Executive Officer of EPFO, on 22 September 2025 at 011-20815653. Following their suggestion, I sent two emails — one about my problem of using the certificate to avail the entitled monthly pension, and the other about the WhatsApp numbers of EPFO not working as mentioned on their website. I have not received any response so far. I contacted the same number several times. Sometimes, they said my mail had been forwarded to the concerned department, while at other times they claimed it was not found. They appear reluctant to understand my problem or make any effort to update me on how it can be resolved.

Harish Rao hails KCR’s vision as Telangana Gurukul students secure MBBS seats

Hyderabad: Former Minister and senior BRS MLA T. Harish Rao on Monday lauded the success of Telangana's Gurukul education system, calling it as one of the greatest achievements of former Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao's rule. Citing the story of Firdous, a student from the Telangana Minority Residential Educational Institution Society (TMREIS) at Bhuchanalli, Zaheerabad, Harish Rao said she had once declared she would become a doctor and has now fulfilled that promise by securing an MBBS seat. Along with Firdous, eight other students from the same institution and seven more from Algol Minority Gurukulam have also secured medical seats this year. "This is the true success of KCR's vision," he said, adding that thousands of Gurukul students across Telangana are now emerging as doctors, engineers, and government officers. The former Minister pointed out that before the formation of Telangana, there were only 290 Gurukuls in the State. "KCR increased them to 1,020, including 204 minority Gurukuls, providing free residential education, food, and accommodation to over 6.5 lakh students," he said. Calling the expansion of Gurukul education a revolution in social empowerment, Harish Rao reminded that Chandrashekhar Rao even introduced intermediate, degree, and law residential colleges, enabling poor and rural students, especially girls, to pursue higher studies. "An entire generation has changed because of his foresight. Investing in the education of the poor is the truest form of development," he said, urging students to give back to society and uphold the Gurukul legacy.

With over 780 million viewers tuning in on television and fans packing stadiums to witness top-class performances, the league has struck a chord not only in Sri Lanka but across key markets including India, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. Building on that momentum, we are confident that the 2025 edition will raise the bar even higher, bringing fans an even bigger celebration of cricket globally.” With actions unfolding just months ahead of the mega global cricketing extravaganza, the LPL 2025 promises to be a high-intensity showcase of international and Sri Lankan talent, adding excitement for fans across the subcontinent in the build-up to the World Cup year.

Telangana State Archives building deteriorates, 43 million historical records at risk

Hyderabad: The Telangana State Archives and Research Institute building that houses the country’s second-oldest document is crumbling, raising concerns about the archives’ safety and preservation. Located on the Osmania University campus, along Tarnaka main-road, the building has been neglected for several years. Cracks have appeared at several places in the building. In fact, the ceiling peeled off, exposing iron support beams in many places. Water seepage is clearly visible along several walls, and there is vegetation growth through the cracked walls both outside and inside the building. The building, which was constructed with limestone and iron beams, launched by former Prime Minister late Lal Bahadur Shastri in 1965 has a separate block of a large stack area in two floors. Currently, approximately 43 million rare and historical records, including the country’s second oldest record-a farman of Firoz Shah Bahmani of the Bahmani Sultanate in the 14th century, are being preserved. The Farman, dating way back to May 14, 1406 AD, was handwritten in Persian language and was for granting land as ‘inam’ to Moulana Muhammad Qazi. The records dating from 1406 -1950 are in classical Persian and Urdu, while the Hyderabad records from 1950 to 1956 are in English. There are some records, which are in Marathi script etc. Besides, a rare collection of 672 Manuscript books in Persian, Arabic and Urdu (classical languages) are being preserved. While there are 43 million records, only 30 percent of them are being preserved in the compactors that prevent the records from fire, dust and theft. The remaining records, which are stored in steel almirahs and steel racks. According to Archives department official sources, records in steel almirah and rack have high risk of getting damaged due to vehicular pollution as the Institute stands on the main road. Further, the sources said construction of a new building with ground and two floors at an estimated cost of Rs.50 crore had been proposed long ago. “Although State government in principle agreed for a new building, which will come up behind the existing one, there has been no headway for a long time,” sources added.

SC dismisses plea against 42 per cent BC reservation in Telangana local body polls

Hyderabad: The Supreme Court on Monday dismissed the writ petition challenging the Telangana government's decision to allocate 42 per cent reservation to Backward Classes (BCs) in the upcoming local body elections, granting the petitioner liberty to approach the High Court for relief. A bench comprising Justice Vikram Nath and Justice Sandeep Mehta observed that the petitioner could not directly invoke Article 32 of the Constitution when two similar writ petitions on the same issue were already pending before the Telangana High Court. When the petitioner's counsel argued that the Supreme Court had earlier entertained similar pleas, Justice Vikram Nath pointedly remarked, "In similar circumstances, we have also dismissed." The bench asked why the petitioners had not pursued their case before the High Court, to which counsel responded that the matter was listed on October 8 but no interim stay had been granted. Rejecting the plea for a stay, the Supreme Court made it clear that the High Court was the proper forum to adjudicate the matter. With this dismissal, the Telangana High Court's hearing on October 8 will now be crucial in determining the fate of the enhanced BC quota in local body elections.

Jemimah Rodrigues says World Cup pitches in Guwahati and Colombo have tested batters

Hyderabad: India star batter Jemimah Rodrigues said both the venues (Guwahati and Colombo) for the first two matches of the on-gong ICC Women’s World Cup had been slightly challenging for the batters, especially in Colombo because the pitch had been under covers and the ball was gripping a bit early on. In a chat with JioHotstar, Jemimah said the spinners bowled really well against Pakistan and so they knew they had to adapt, take the game deep, and build partnerships. “Everyone contributed, and towards the end, Richa’s fireworks helped us reach a winning total,” she said. “We try to take it one day at a time and stay in the present. Even in our group conversations, we focus on building our own bubble because we know how much noise surrounds a World Cup,” Jemimah said. “Whether we do well or face challenges, we want to keep all that outside and create our own energy. Everyone in this team genuinely looks out for each other and celebrates each other’s success. That comes so naturally and really strengthens our bond,” she said. On the journey of women’s cricket in India, the star player said when she first entered the team Mithali di and Jhulan di were their seniors. “And, to now see the transition with Harman di and Smriti leading together is really special. They’ve created an environment where everyone wants to give their all for the team,” she said. “We also want to win it for those who paved the way, for Mithali di, Jhulan di (Jhulan Goswami), Neetu ma’am (Neetu David), and all those who helped bring women’s cricket to where it is today,” Jemimah said.

Kochi Blue Spikers edge past Goa Guardians in five-set thriller at Prime Volleyball League

Hyderabad: Kochi Blue Spikers picked up a hard-fought win over the Goa Guardians 11-15, 17-15, 15-13, 10-15, 15-10 in the RR Kabel Prime Volleyball League powered by Scapia at the Gachibowli Indoor Stadium, Hyderabad on Sunday night. Hemanth was named the Player of the Match. Goa captain Chirag Yadav set the tone early, starting the game with a super serve. Kochi matched the intensity with captain Erin attacking from the outside zones. Goa's gutsy move of a super point paid rewards as Erin made a service error. Amarinder Pal Singh attacked from the centre court for the Spikers, while Hemanth brought firepower with his serves. Kochi skipper Byron Keturakis formed a two-man block with Amarinder to stop Chirag's attacks, and the strategy worked. Erin continued to gain in confidence with his movement, and Kochi capitalised on their momentum. Prince overcooked his serve, costing Goa a super point, and Kochi took control. Trailing behind, Goa dug deep with Rohit testing the opposition from the service line. Substitute Vikram provided much-needed depth in the front court in both attack and defence, and the Guardians pushed the game to the fifth set. Libero Alan Ashique made excellent saves to earn Spikers crucial points in the deciding set. Hemanth took charge in the front court across all departments. A smart review call for Erin earned Kochi a crucial super point, and Kochi sealed a memorable 3-2 win.

Congress faces backlash as Army halts Shaikpet graveyard plan

Hyderabad: The Congress government faced significant embarrassment and backlash after an obvious but hurried attempt to appease Muslim voters ahead of the Jubilee Hills by-elections backfired. The State government’s move to allocate land for a Muslim burial ground at Shaikpet failed to take off, when Army officials descended on the spot, claiming ownership of the land and stopping all activity. The controversy arose after the State government, via a Government Order and the TS Wakf Board, allocated 2,500 square yards of land at ‘Ghairabad Masjid’, Shaikpet, for a graveyard. This decision is being seen by many as a direct response to a long-standing demand from Muslim residents in the Jubilee Hills constituency, particularly those in Borabanda, Yousufguda, Erragadda and Shaikpet. The allocation was also aimed to secure electoral support in the upcoming bypoll. Advisor to Government for Minority Affairs Mohd Ali Shabbir had announced the allocation on Sunday. Shortly thereafter, Telangana Minorities Residential Educational Institutions Society (TMREIS) chairman Faheem Qureshi and AIMIM Karwan MLA Kauser Mohiuddin, along with other local leaders, visited the site. However, the political plan quickly unravelled. The same day, a team of Army officials visited the spot and ordered the community to stay away, arguing that the land belonged to the Defence Ministry and that no work could proceed until the ownership dispute was resolved. The Army was reportedly preparing to fence the land to prevent unauthorised access. The incident has left Muslim residents seething with anger, especially at the TS Wakf Board and Congress leaders. The residents blamed both for failing to do proper homework before the public announcement. The local residents also stressed that the 2,500 square yards allocated was fundamentally insufficient for the long-term needs of the community in Borabanda, Erragadda and surrounding areas. Syed Abdul Qadeer, a local resident of Sultannagar in Erragadda, said Muslims in several localities under Jubilee Hills constituency were demanding adequate land for the graveyard. “What will we do with 2,500 square yards of land? It won’t be sufficient in the long run. There is land at Gutala Begumpet and other places. We demand more than two acres of land from the government,” said Abdul Qadeer. Mohd Ghouse Pasha, a resident of Borabanda, said they were demanding the land for a burial ground for several years. “We have lived all our lives here in Borabanda. We want land somewhere nearby. There are huge parcels of government land here. What is the use of allocating the burial ground far away from our houses?” he asked. Another resident, Nasreen Begum of SRT Nagar, complained of existing nearby graveyards facing a severe shortage of space and being prone to drainage water inundation during monsoon. For the Muslim voters of Jubilee Hills, the priority remains securing a large, adequate parcel of land for a burial ground within the constituency limits. BRS leaders, farmers detained ahead of ‘Chalo Hyderabad’ protest over RRR land acquisition

Hyderabad: Several Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) leaders, farmers and others were taken into custody or placed under house arrest by police on Monday, ahead of the party’s ‘Chalo Hyderabad’ protest against the acquisition of farmers’ lands for the Regional Ring Road (RRR). In Ayyavaripally, Bhimaram, and neighbouring villages, police reached the residences of a few BRS leaders early in the morning and detained them. Raising slogans against the Congress government for its approach towards the farming community, BRS leaders including Veeresham and Shiva criticised the police action. They alleged that the government was forcibly taking over farmers’ lands without offering fair compensation. Many small and marginal farmers, they said, were losing not just their land but also their livelihood. In Nalgonda, police detained several farmers and leaders of the CPI(M) to prevent them from joining the protest at the HMDA office in Hyderabad. The CPI(M) too is protesting against what it termed the Congress government’s failure to address farmers’ issues and is demanding that the State desist from forcibly acquiring farmlands.
