Executive roundtable discusses strategic workforce shaping

At least 140 of Uganda’s leading employers agree that it’s crucial to focus on the talent and leadership skills they can offer as they make strides to shape the workforce across the country. These observations were made on Thursday at the Golden Tulip Hotel during BrighterMonday Uganda’s Executive Roundtable on Strategic Workforce Shaping held in partnership with the Mastercard Foundation, the Federation of Uganda Employers (FUE), and the Human Resource Managers’ Association of Uganda (HRMAU).The gathering marked a bold step toward future-proofing Uganda’s workforce and harnessing the country’s youthful demographic dividend.Unlike traditional discussions on recruitment, the Roundtable emphasised transforming young talent into long-term leadership pipelines, highlighting how early career development and strategic mentorship can shape organisational resilience and competitiveness.Uganda’s workforce is overwhelmingly young, with over 70% of the population under the age of 30. According to Xenia Wachira, Country Manager at BrighterMonday Uganda, this demographic reality offers both an opportunity and a challenge.“Uganda’s youth could be our greatest asset, or our biggest risk if not strategically nurtured. Today, we explored ways to create career pathways that turn young talent into the leaders of tomorrow,” Wachira said.Executives shared experiences and strategies to bridge the gap between youthful potential and workplace readiness.Evelyn Zalwango of AmCham Uganda stressed that youth unemployment is not just about jobs, but rather preparation and exposure.“We need to equip young people with the skills, mentorship, and real-world experience to contribute meaningfully from day one,” she noted. The Roundtable highlighted the need for data-driven workforce planning, moving away from reactive hiring toward anticipating skill needs.Panellists included Joanita Mukasa Menya (VIVO Energy), Henry Tumusiime (ABSA Bank), and Susan Mataka (Kakira Sugar Limited), who shared approaches to identifying skill adjacencies, building internal talent marketplaces, and creating structured career pathways that integrate knowledge transfer and succession planning.“Early career recruitment is not just filling vacancies; it’s about future-proofing organisations by nurturing talent that can lead the company decades from now,” Natasha Katondwaki stressed.Gen-Kazi Project Lead, Pamela Kabahesi, reminded participants that Uganda’s youth could either drive national economic growth or exacerbate challenges if not strategically engaged.“The decisions we make today about how we recruit, train, and mentor young people will determine whether this generation becomes productive contributors or a lost opportunity,” Kabahesi said. The Roundtable concluded with the development of a strategic roadmap that emphasises cross-functional collaboration between HR, Finance, and Operations departments. Leaders are committed to embedding workforce shaping into core business strategy rather than leaving it as an HR function alone.BrighterMonday Uganda, FUE, and HRMAU plan to translate insights from the Roundtable into white papers, industry benchmarks, and executive toolkits, helping organisations create actionable plans to develop youth talent into tomorrow’s business leaders. The event showcased a shared vision: Uganda’s youth are not just future employees, they are the strategic backbone of national economic growth, and equipping them today is essential to sustaining businesses and the broader economy tomorrow.

Settibalijas Irked At Minister Subhash’s Comments

Kakinada:Some recent comments of the Labour Minister Vasamsetti Subhash have irked the Settibalija community.Subhash, who spoke at the Settibalija Vana Samaradhana meeting held at Konkapalli near Amalapuram in Konaseema district the other day, stated that some people in the community were “useless” and they were asking him to fulfill promises he had made long ago.He also criticised the Settibalija community leaders in the YSRC without mentioning their names. The minister said one leader (Ch.Srinivasa Venu Gopalakrishna) bowed his head before YS Jagan Mohan Reddy and hurt the reputation of the community. Now, there is widespread criticism of the minister, and many said he should not have spoken harshly about the community leaders as it was not a party meeting.YSRC central executive council member Pithani Balakrishna has given a strong counter to minister Subhash and said he should first disclose the accounts of the Settibalija Sangham. He enquired about the deposit of `1 crore to the Settibalija Action Force Fund. “Before the elections, Subhash made a promise to the community people to deposit `1 crore to SAF but he did not do this for the past 17 months.” He asked the minister not to scold or abuse the community leaders during their meeting as these are not party platforms. “During the past 17 months, Subhash could not provide jobs to the unemployed youth in the community. Settibalijas have not asked him to form an SAF or give funds to them. But he himself promised the people he would do this, Now, he should fulfil his promise and do good to our people.”Balakrishna alleged that the minister had no reputation in Konaseema district and he brought people from outside to the Vana Samaradhana meeting.Meanwhile, some of the settibalija community leaders suggested that the minister change his behaviour as he would have a good political career in future.

Judge in Google Ad Tech Case Seeks Quick Fix For Web Giant's Monopolies

Virginia: The US judge considering whether to order a breakup of Google's advertising technology business asked the Department of Justice on Friday how quickly such a remedy would take effect, saying, "time is of the essence."Google has so far come away largely unscathed from a bipartisan government legal crackdown on the dominance of Big Tech - a push that began during the first term of President Donald Trump. But that could change, depending on what US District Court Judge Leonie Brinkema in Alexandria, Virginia, decides in the DOJ's case over Google's ad tech.At closing arguments in the case on Friday, the judge brought up the fact that Google will seek to appeal the case, a move that would likely push any forced sale years down the road."The kind of request you are making most likely would not be as easily enforceable while an appeal is pending," the judge said.Brinkema ruled in April that Google holds two illegal ad tech monopolies, and is now considering what the company must do to restore competition.Google is "in an impossible situation" and very likely to appeal that ruling, Brinkema said, given the fact that publishers and rival ad tech companies are relying on the ruling to seek damages in several new lawsuits. The DOJ and a coalition of states have asked the judge to make Google sell its ad exchange, AdX, where online publishers pay Google a 20% fee to sell ads in auctions that happen instantly when users load websites.DOJ attorney Matthew Huppert argued onFriday that nothing short of a forced sale would bring a "brighter, more competitive future for the open web."The court's remedy "needs to eradicate Google's illegally acquired monopolies root and branch," he said.Google's attorney Karen Dunn argued a forced sale would be too extreme a measure."Lawfully acquired monopoly power is the foundation of the American economy," she said, citing a 2004 Supreme Court ruling.A breakup would be technically difficult, resulting in a long and painful transition that would hurt customers, Dunn argued. The closing arguments on Friday mark the end of evidentiary hearings in Google's years-long battle with the DOJ over its dominance in online advertising and search. Next, Google has said it will file appeals. The US still has antitrust cases pending against Meta Platforms , Amazon and Apple .

Supreme Court To Hear SIR Pleas

New Delhi:The Supreme Court on Friday agreed to hear a batch of pleas challenging the Election Commission's decision to conduct Special Intensive Revision exercise in Kerala, Uttar Pradesh and other States.A three-judge bench of Justices Surya Kant, S.V.N. Bhatti and Joymalya Bagchi issued notice to the Election Commission on all the fresh petitions filed by different political leaders, challenging SIR exercises in different States on different grounds.Senior Advocate Kapil Sibal, appearing for a petitioner challenging SIR exercise in Kerala, submitted that local body elections are also scheduled to be held in the state and, therefore, there is some urgency involved in the matter. The apex court directed the pleas challenging SIR exercise in Kerala will be listed on November 26 and rest of the petitions challenging electoral roll revision exercise in other States will be taken up for hearing in the first or second week of December. Justice Kant said that it is good that political parties are now coming forward to challenge the exercise instead of private individuals. The top court is already hearing a clutch of pleas challenging the validity of the Election Commission's decision to conduct pan-India SIR exercise. On November 11, the top court sought separate responses of the poll panel on pleas filed by DMK, CPI(M), West Bengal Congress and Trinamool Congress leaders challenging the SIR of the electoral rolls in Tamil Nadu and West Bengal respectively. The Kerala government's plea said that the State, as an entity, is of the view that the SIR, particularly in the manner in which it is being undertaken, is not conducive to the democratic polity of the country."The state prays for leave of this court to reserve its right to challenge the process of the SIR in appropriate proceedings, if deemed necessary. However, the grievance of the State highlighted in this writ petition is limited to request for deferment of the SIR in Kerala," it said. The state government further said that the deferment is sought for since undertaking of the SIR simultaneously with the elections to the local self government institutions (LSGIs) will adversely affect the smooth conduct of the said elections and will possibly result in an administrative impasse in the State. The Kerala government further said there are 1200 LSGIs in the State, made up of 941 Grama Panchayats, 152 Block Panchayats, 14 District Panchayats, 87 municipalities and six corporations. It said the Kerala State Election Commission has decided to conduct general elections to the LSGIs in the state on December 9.

Dushala Epic Retold Via A Women’s Lament

The Dr Alekya Punjala-Vinay Varma product, ‘Dushala’ is a must-see. To a city starved of good, affordable stage plays, it is an artistic mosaic of amazing craft, membership, talent, poignance and intrigue. Notwithstanding the source, the Mahabharata, the approach is absorbing.Vinay Varma takes the road less travelled, and Alekya establishes beyond an iota of doubt that she is a consummate danseuse apart from being a brilliant actor. ‘Dushala’, to the uninitiated, is the only daughter to the hundred Kaurava brothers. The play starts as an ode to the saga of women in constant search of identity, but is largely a lament of a lady, a voice in the wilderness. Our voice is swept by the presence of the protagonist on stage — the only character. The principal character takes over completely. She holds you in awe for the duration of the drama. There is a tangential reference that Pandavas and their journey to self-discovery is a recurring date with disaster. The stage script is largely a lament of Dushala against her mother Gandhari. As she dances and plays, even as the lone princess of the famous clan, she suffers gender bias — maybe even more tragic indifference. In fact, in the great epic, she’s not more than a minor footnote. Her fancied dressing in a carefree childhood is characterised by the feeling of isolation not only from the entire world, but also her own mother. The seeds of sorrow and loneliness. The mother who evolves is one who never cradled or carried her, sang lullabies, or told stories, being preoccupied with her sons. There is a lyrical rhetoric, “if only she asked”, repeated in the multiple scenarios of the grand epic including the Draupadi Vastraharan.Another interesting dramatic thread in the later part is a sarcastic reference: “Oh the great dramatic Mahabharata!!”. It is never easy to depict sarcasm on stage, especially when the semantics is laced with dance. This is where Alekya is completely in command. The tone, the timbre, the measured emotion are in perfect coordination, making for compelling viewing.“Woh mujhse poochhte, main unhe batati, “If they asked, I would have informed” — is a dialogue that comes on various occasions, not just to suggest that wise input could save the scenario, but also the nagging feel of being slighted or being ignored, and is stated and enacted with tremendous depth and effect. As the daughter of Dhritarashtra, the sister of the Kaurava brothers, the wife of Jayadratha, and finally the mother of Suratha, the aching agony of not being victimised but being ignored in the saga of a drowning voice is an epic, which — to borrow from the playwright — is the roll call of widows, hard-hitting units of sons of illegitimacy galore; not a single woman of import having lasting pieces in the narrative.Apart from largely being well-written, the play disproportionately allocated space to the issues and the incidents in the epic. In fact, Dushala’s story is largely against an overstretched patriarchy, without individual references, strategically absolving an analysis of Jayadratha. It is the director’s call and surely justified — bite only what you can chew.Vinay Varma is in his element. So seamless is the narrative that you do not find him anywhere. This is a great level a director can achieve: permit the character to live on her own, not be his puppet. The play showcases in a few instances Alekhya’s trained rhythm to dance. ‘Dushala’ is not about dance — it is just also there. Alekhya’s performance is top-notch. She showcases the many moods of the feminine soul arched in the wilderness, a witness to unmatched human destruction. To hear the epic of ethics is paradox. Every minute of the portrayal is bettered in commitment, understanding, and brilliant craftsmanship.More power to the Dushalas, even more to those who voice them!!Note: The play has been chosen for the International Gita Mahotsav 2025, to be held at Kurukshetra, Haryana. ‘Dushala’ will be staged on November 24.

HYDRAA Secures Rs 700-cr Worth Land In Kondapur

Hyderabad:HYDRAA said it had protected Rs 700-crore worth land in Kondapur on Friday. Following Telangana High Court’s directions, the agency fenced off two parcels of land measuring four acres in Sri Venkateswara HAL Colony and put up signboards marking them as parkland. The agency said the parkland was illegally sold under by-survey numbers. Residents alleged that Simha Developers, Vasavi Construction Company and others had purchased the land and placed bouncers to intimidate the locals. The layout, formed in the 1980s over 57.2 acres with 627 plots, originally set aside 1.2 acres each for two parks, two acres for another park and about 1,000 sq. yds for public use. Sri Venkateswara HAL Residents’ Welfare Association representatives and colony members told HYDRAA that the parklands were encroached and were sold by fabricating documents and creating fake by-survey numbers. For more than a decade, the association had been fighting to protect these open spaces, and approached HYDRAA. They showed how the park areas had been broken up into multiple land parcels and sold. The association also approached the High Court, which directed HYDRAA to verify the situation on the ground and take necessary steps.During the field inspection, HYDRAA officials reportedly found that one of the parks, which should have been 1.2 acres, had been split into three parts and turned into 11 plots. Two other parks had also been handled in a similar manner.According to the residents, some individuals had created the layout in the 1980s using GPA documents and later sold parts of the reserved land.

JNTU Celebrates 60 Yrs Of Guiding Telangana’s Tech Education

Hyderabad: Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University Hyderabad’s six-decade journey, from its beginning as Nagarjunasagar Engineering College in 1965 to becoming India’s first technological university in 1972, was discussed at length during the diamond jubilee of its University College of Engineering on Friday.Speakers said the university’s long history continues to guide its role in Telangana’s technical education system and now carries fresh expectations as the state focuses on skills and employment. Officials noted that the university had grown from three constituent colleges to 10 and now supported nearly 200 affiliated colleges with close to 3.5 lakh students. Alumni have gone on to careers in engineering, public service, research and global industry, forming a wide network that has shaped the identity of the institution over the years. Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka told students and teachers that the coming decade will place more responsibility on technical universities. “Telangana’s future depends on the strength of its education system. Students must gain both skills and confidence,” he said. Bhatti added that the government has restored trust in recruitment examinations and is upgrading technical institutions through Young India Skills University and improvements to industrial training institutes. He said long-pending issues raised by the university, including land matters, tax requests and the need for new infrastructure worth nearly 800 crore rupees, would be examined. The Deputy Chief Minister encouraged students to focus on hands-on learning. “Innovation should become part of everyday study. Spend more time in laboratories and with mentors. That is how ideas grow,” he said. He also asked alumni to continue supporting the university, saying their involvement would help strengthen the next phase of its growth. While delivering his report, Vice Chancellor Prof. T. Kishen Kumar Reddy said JNTU Hyderabad had supported major examinations such as Eapcet, PGcet, Ecet and the recent TGPSC group exams. He said the university was preparing to expand its work in quantum computing, artificial intelligence and machine learning and has applied for support under the national quantum mission. “We want our students to be ready for the fields that will shape the future,” he said. The celebrations included the release of a university anthem written by faculty member and alumnus Dr Rajeshkhanna Bhuthkuri and composed by renowned music director Yashokrishna. Dr Bhuthkuri told Deccan Chronicle that the anthem drew from the National Anthem Jana Gana Mana, the National song Vande Mataram and the Telangana and Andhra state songs, that capture the institution’s identity, and said he hoped it would “carry the spirit of JNTU Hyderabad to every future batch.” Former administrators, higher education officials and alumni leaders attended the occasion, which revisited the university’s history while laying out priorities for the years ahead.

Iran rejects UN atomic agency’s resolution and threatens more reprisal actions

Iran’s Foreign Ministry called a resolution by the U.N. atomic watchdog’s board of governors “anti-Iranian” and threatened unspecified retaliatory actions, state media reported on Friday (November 21, 2025). The International Atomic Energy Agency on Thursday demanded that Iran fully cooperate with the agency and provide “precise information” about its stockpile of near weapons-grade uranium, as well as grant its inspectors access to Iranian nuclear sites. A report by the official IRNA news agency on Friday quoted Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei as saying that Iran informed the Vienna-based IAEA in a letter that it in addition to ending an agreement forged over the summer in Cairo, the Iranian government could take “other actions" in response to Thursday's resolution. Iran suspended all cooperation with the IAEA after the war with Israel. IAEA Director-Genral Rafael Mariano Grossi then reached an agreement with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi in Cairo in early September to resume inspections. Mr. Baghaei didn't immediately elaborate on what further actions Iran would take, but further uranium enrichment by the country is a possibility. He accused the IAEA of amplifying “grudges” held against Iran by the United States, the United Kingdom, France and Germany. The Minister complained that the resolution didn't mention the reason that Iran halted inspections was because of the strikes by Israel and the U.S. against Iran’s nuclear facilities in June. The IAEA's resolution sets the stage for a likely further escalation of tensions between the U.N. nuclear agency and Iran, which has reacted strongly to similar moves by the watchdog in the past. After a 12-day air war in June with Israel, Iran suspended all cooperation with the IAEA. Strikes on Iran killed nearly 1,100 in Iran, including military commanders and nuclear scientists. After the deal to resume inspections in September, the U.N. reimposed crushing sanctions on Iran later that month through the so-called snapback mechanism contained in the 2015 Iran nuclear deal, drawing an angry response from Tehran and leading it to halt implementation of the Cairo agreement.

Ricin terror plot: Digital literature, CCTV footage, black flag among material found by ATS

The Gujarat ATS, probing the alleged ricin chemical poison terror plot, has recovered digital literature titled 'How to Stay Anonymous' from a conversation between one of the accused and his handler on a social media platform, officials said on Friday (November 21, 2025). The probe agency also found video footage in which the same accused is seen stepping out of a hotel in Ahmedabad, and recovered a black flag from the Uttar Pradesh residence of another accused, they said. The Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) has arrested the trio — Dr Ahmed Mohiyuddin Saiyed, Azad Suleman Sheikh and Mohammad Suhail Khan — on November 9 for their alleged involvement in conspiring a major terrorist attack with weapons and chemicals. Senior ATS officials on Friday said they have recovered CCTV video footage dated November 7 showing terror suspect Ahmed Saiyed leaving Hotel Grand Ambience on Mirzapur Road near Sidi Saiyyed Masjid in Ahmedabad. A black flag was seized from Suhail Khan's residence in UP, they said. "We have recovered digital literature titled 'How to Stay Anonymous' in a conversation on a social media platform between Saiyed and his handler," they said. The officials also shared a screenshot of Saiyed's social media display profile, which carried a similar black flag that was recovered from Suhail's residence. The ATS on November 9 claimed to have busted a suspected terror syndicate with the arrest of the trio. They claimed that Saiyed was allegedly preparing 'ricin' poison, and his handler is associated with the Islamic State Khorasan Province (ISKP). While Saiyed hails from Hyderabad (Telangana), Azad and Suhail are from Uttar Pradesh, the officials said. Gujarat ATS DIG Sunil Joshi has said earlier that they were in Gujarat to exchange weapons and had conspired to carry out terrorist activities involving ricin. Searches were carried out at the residences of the suspects in UP and Hyderabad followed by their arrest. Two Glock pistols, a Beretta pistol, 30 live cartridges and four litres of castor oil were recovered from Saiyed's residence in Hyderabad, officials said.

Congress warns Karnataka leaders against public remarks on leadership issue

Amid speculation over leadership change in Karnataka, the Congress on Friday said it has sternly warned its leaders and MLAs in the State from making any public statements on the leadership issue or falling for the agenda propagated by vested interests. Blaming the BJP for running a maligning campaign against its Karnataka government, All India Congress Committee general secretary incharge for party affairs in Karnataka Randeep Surjewala said he had a discussion with Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy Chief Minister D. K. Shivakumar over the issue. "The needless Statements of some Congress leaders and MLA’s has also added to the speculation. The Indian National Congress has sternly warned them (leaders and MLAs) from making any public statements on the issue of leadership or falling for the agenda being propagated by the vested interests. "The opinion of various party functionaries has been taken note of by the leadership," he said in a post on X. "Had a discussion with Karnataka CM and Deputy CM and they agreed that a decisively defeated and faction ridden Karnataka BJP, alongwith a section of the media, are designedly running a maligning campaign against Karnataka and its Congress Government," he said. Mr. Surjewala said the sole idea is to undermine the stellar achievements and five Congress government guarantees, which he claimed have become an outstanding model of inclusive development and distributive justice. As the Congress government in Karnataka completes 2.5 years, there has been speculation within the party over a possible leadership change in the State. However, Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar said he does not believe in groupism within the party and all 140 MLAs of the Congress are his own and he stands by them. "All 140 MLAs are my MLAs. Making a group is not in my blood. The CM decided to reshuffle the cabinet. Everyone wants to become a minister, so it is quite natural for them to meet the leadership in Delhi. It is their right. We can’t stop them and say no. "The CM has said that he will complete 5 years. I wish him all the best. We will all work with him. Both the CM and me have time and again said we abide by the high command," Shivakumar said in a post on X.

City court convicts three Bawaria gang members for the murder of MLA Sudarsanam

Nearly 20 years after former Minister and AIADMK MLA K. Sudarsanam was shot dead by a gang near Chennai, a city sessions court on Friday (November 21, 2025) convicted three members of the Bawaria gang on the charges of dacoity and murder for gain. The quantum of sentence will be pronounced on Monday (November 24, 2025), judge Abraham Lincoln said. In the early hours of January 8, 2005, the gang descended on the house of Sudarsanam, 57, then sitting MLA for Gummidipoondi, at Thanakulam near Periyapalayam in Tiruvallur district. While one stood outside holding a gun, the other members broke open the front door with an axe and began attacking the occupants with iron rods. Sudarsanam’s son Satish Kumar, 28, was the first to wake up and was attacked. On hearing his cries, Sudarsanam came down from his room and tried to prevent the six assailants from attacking his son. He was shot dead with a single-barrel muzzle-loaded gun. He died on the spot. Another son, Vijay, was locked up in a room. The gang escaped with cash, jewellery, and mobile phones. The gang leader, who had positioned himself outside the house, fired at neighbours who had gathered after hearing the screams and chased them away. The gang members escaped under the cover of darkness and boarded a lorry they had parked one kilometre away. Immediately after the murder, a special team was formed under Inspector-General of Police (North) S.R. Jangid. The team found a pattern in several cases that had occurred between 1995 and 2005, all showing the handiwork of a gang suspected to be from North India. The police later arrested the Bawaria gang members in Haryana and Rajasthan. The police found that between 1995 and 2005, a series of sensational highway dacoities and murders for gain had taken place. The gang had committed 24 dacoities in Tamil Nadu, in which 13 persons were killed and 63 were injured, most of them seriously. Jewellery and cash worth over ₹2 crore were looted. The gang had also struck terror in the neighbouring Andhra Pradesh. In the Sudarsanam murder case, the Periyapalayam police arrested nine members of the Bawaria gang, including Oma alias Omprakash and Boora alias Gunthanlal, along with three women. Oma and Boora later died of illness while serving life imprisonment at the Vellore Central Prison in another case: the dacoity and murder of a doctor at Ranipet. Four persons were tried as the case was split up after three women accused absconded. The charge sheet was filed in 2006 under Sections 395 (dacoity), 396 (dacoity with murder), and 397 (robbery or dacoity causing death or grievous hurt) of the Indian Penal Code, along with provisions of the Arms Act. The trial was conducted by Additional Government Advocate G. Srinivasan before the XV Additional Sessions Court. The four accused were produced before the judge at Singaravelar Maligai on Friday. The judge convicted three of them — Jagadish alias Gunna and Rakesh alias Guddu of Haryana and Ashok alias Laxman of Bharatpur district in Rajasthan.
