Former New York Jets center Nick Mangold, battling chronic kidney disease since a 2006 diagnosis for a rare genetic disorder, went public Tuesday with his need for a kidney transplant. Mangold, 41, a member of the Jets' Ring of Honor, made his appeal on social media and via an announcement from the team. "This isn't an easy message to share, but I want to be open about what's been happening with me and my health," Mangold said in his statement. Mangold said he endured a "rough summer" and that he's currently undergoing dialysis. "I always knew this day would come, but I thought I would have had more time," he said. "Unfortunately, I do not have any family able to donate at this time, so this is why I'm reaching out to you, our NY Jets community. I am in need of a kidney donor with type O blood. BIRMINGHAM, Alabama -- While John Calipari has watched his peers -- such as Jay Wright, Tony Bennett and more recently Bruce Pearl -- surprisingly exit the game amid major changes to the sport, the 66-year-old coach said he's not considering a similar early departure. But he also said he will leave college basketball when he can no longer do the job the way he wants to do the job. "I want to help 25 to 30 more families," Calipari said during SEC media day on Tuesday. "The only way you do that is to be transformational as a coach. If you're not, you're transactional. If I become transactional -- 'I'm going to pay you this to do this and that' -- then I won't do this anymore. I don't need to." Although Arkansas added key players -- like five-star recruit Darius Acuff -- the program also lost standout talents to the portal, including Boogie Fland (Florida) and Zvonimir Ivisic (Illinois). In his attempt to avoid the turnover many teams have experienced, Calipari has warned his players that entering the portal means their time with the Razorbacks is over, even if they have second thoughts. "That's why if someone puts their name in the portal, I say, 'You're not coming back,' because it's not going to be transactional." Calipari said he still has the same passion to coach and any observer of his practices at Arkansas would see that he is still "connected" to his players. He also said he plans to stay in college basketball because he wants to make positive changes for the next generation of coaches, which includes his son, Arkansas assistant Brad Calipari. "Kelvin Sampson and I just talked," said Calipari about the Houston coach whose son, Kellen, is his top assistant. "I said, 'We've got to fix some of this stuff before we're out for our own children.'" Despite the issues, Calipari said he'll know it's time for him to retire if he can no longer build genuine relationships with players. The current era has made that ambition more difficult. Coach Jason Kidd has signed a multiyear contract extension with the Dallas Mavericks, a source confirmed to ESPN on Tuesday. The extension comes in the wake of strong interest in Kidd from the New York Knicks before they hired Mike Brown to fill their coaching vacancy. The Mavs declined to give the Knicks permission to interview Kidd, who has a 179-149 record during his four-year stint in Dallas. The Mavs have made runs to the 2022 Western Conference finals and 2024 NBA Finals under Kidd. Kidd's previous contract extension came during Dallas' 2024 playoff run, when the Los Angeles Lakers had interest in interviewing him. NBA reporter Marc Stein first reported Kidd's extension.

Work is advanced to facilitate expansion and upgrading works at the Savanna-la-Mar Public General Hospital in Westmoreland. Providing an update during a recent press briefing at the S Hotel in Montego Bay, Minister of Health and Wellness, Dr. the Hon. Christopher Tufton, said that the project, which includes expansion of the Accident and Emergency (A&E) Department and improvements to other critical areas, has now reached the procurement stage. “We’re in the final stages of the full costing, and the intention, once that is done, is to go to market [for a contractor],” he pointed out. Dr. Tufton said that the planned expansion will help to ease overcrowding and improve patient care. The project will start with the A&E Department, which will have a diagnostic area, a laboratory, and additional space. “Then, the A&E area on the old building will provide more opportunities for a few additional bed spaces; then we’ll build out from there,” Dr. Tufton said. He informed that the hospital’s sewerage system will also be overhauled. He noted that qualified engineers have been engaged to design a new system using modern technology to ensure reliability. “The bid documents are out; they’re likely to be considered starting in a week or two, and hopefully, we’ll have an appropriate provider of that service before the end of this year,” he added. Turning to developments in Hanover, Dr. Tufton reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to improving services at the Noel Holmes Hospital. “We had committed to a new minor operating theatre,” he said.

The Jamaica Pavilion walked away with a Silver Award at Expo 2025 Japan. The island was recognised for theme development in the shared pavilions ‘Connecting Lives’ category. Kazakhstan won the Gold Medal while the East African country of Djibouti received the Bronze. The Official Participants Awards were presented at the Bureau International des Expositions (BIE) Day Awards Ceremony on Sunday (October 12) in the Expo Hall. A total of 45 Gold, Silver and Bronze Awards and four new Sustainability Awards were presented during the ceremony. “When our name was called for a prize, we were elated, and as always, once we hear Jamaica on a global stage, it boosts our national pride. It is wonderful that the team could come together and present this Pavilion, which earned a prestigious award,” said Commissioner General of Section, Jamaica Pavilion at Expo 2025 Osaka, Maureen Smith. The Official Participant Awards, presented at every World Expo recognise various aspects of pavilions, including architecture and landscape, external design, exhibition design, theme development and sustainability. A total of 158 countries participated in the Expo in various clusters, showcasing different themes.
