Sweden Doesn't Know Where Syrian Male Suspected of Shooting Qur'an Burning Activist Dead Fled To

AFP — Swedish prosecutors on Thursday sought the arrest a young Syrian man for killing Salwan Momika, who repeatedly burned copies of the Koran in 2023 and sparked outrage in the Muslim world. Momika, an Iraqi Christian, was shot on January 29 in an apartment in Sodertalje, south of Stockholm. He died soon after in hospital. “We have a clear picture of the sequence of events, and following extensive technical investigations and a review of the collected surveillance footage, we have requested that a person be remanded in custody,” senior prosecutor Rasmus Oman said in a statement. Oman added that “at present, the whereabouts of the suspect are unknown.” A court hearing will be held on Friday. According to documents filed with the Sodertalje district court, the suspect was a 24-year-old Syrian man. The prosecutor said the suspect “killed Salwan Momika by shooting him several times with a handgun,” adding that the murder had been extensively planned. Five men were originally arrested just hours after the shooting but were all released two days later. They were formally dismissed as suspects in March. Momika was killed just hours before a Stockholm court was due to rule whether he and co-defendant Salwan Najem were guilty of inciting ethnic hatred. After Momika’s murder, the Stockholm court postponed its ruling for several days. It ultimately convicted 50-year-old Najem, also of Iraqi origin, of inciting ethnic hatred during four Koran burnings in 2023. There was no ruling on Momika. Relations between Sweden and several Middle Eastern countries were strained by the pair’s actions. Iraqi protesters stormed the Swedish embassy in Baghdad twice in July 2023, starting fires in the compound on the second occasion. In August 2023, Sweden’s intelligence service Sapo raised its threat level to four on a scale of one to five, saying the Koran burnings had made the country a “prioritised target”.

Civil society groups call for continued fight for press freedom

Civil society groups laid a wreath at the Great Siege Monument in Valletta yesterday to mark the eighth anniversary of the assassination of journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia. "Today, we pause, not for protest or for politics, but for reflection. To create space to remember Daphne for what she was before she was a symbol: a writer, a journalist, a woman who used words as both mirror and torch," said Pia Zammit at the ceremony. The wreath-laying was organised by the Institute of Maltese Journalists (IGM), Occupy Justice, Repubblika and PEN Malta. The groups gathered to remember Caruana Galizia, who was killed by a car bomb outside her Bidnija home on 16 October 2017 while investigating corruption. Brothers George and Alfred Degiorgio pleaded guilty to murdering Caruana Galizia in 2022. The Maksar brothers and their associates were accused earlier this year of supplying the bomb which killed her. Businessman Yorgen Fenech, who is currently out on bail, is awaiting trial for his role in allegedly masterminding the hit. Speakers at the ceremony included Pia Zammit, an activist with Repubblika and Occupy Justice, Matthew Xuereb, president of the Institute of Maltese Journalists, and Klara Vassallo from PEN Malta. "As we stand here today, we must recognise that journalism is the bedrock of a healthy democracy. When journalism thrives, democracy flourishes. But when it is threatened, silenced, or attacked, the very fabric of our democratic society unravels," said Xuereb. He added that Caruana Galizia's assassination "was not merely an attack on one individual; it was an assault on the principles of freedom of expression and the rights of all journalists." The speakers stressed that the fight for justice was not only about seeking accountability for Caruana Galizia's murder, but also about ensuring press freedom continues. "We must demand stronger protections for those who risk their lives to bring us the news," Xuereb said. The ceremony heard that Caruana Galizia's legacy lives on in journalists who continue to tell stories that need to be told, despite the risks they face. PN accuses the government of failing to implement the inquiry recommendations The Nationalist Party said justice for the assassination of Daphne Caruana Galizia is already eight years late, as the Maltese people are still waiting for the truth. The party said the Public Inquiry was concluded more than four years ago, yet the Government has failed to implement its recommendations. The Inquiry found the Government guilty of creating a culture of impunity that led to the assassination. The PN recalled that the three Judges stated: "there is nothing to indicate that the assassination did not occur for reasons directly linked to the investigations which Mrs Caruana Galizia was carrying out into serious allegations of bad public administration, abuse of power and corruption." The party said Robert Abela must immediately ensure that all the recommendations of the Public Inquiry are implemented in full, or the Maltese people can never be guaranteed that this Government will not allow the assassination of another journalist.

Exclusive: Rep. Jimmy Patronis Endorses Byron Donalds for Florida Governor

Rep. Jimmy Patronis (R-FL) is endorsing Rep. Byron Donalds’ (R-FL) gubernatorial bid in the Sunshine State, Breitbart News first learned exclusively. On Thursday, Patronis, the former Chief Financial Officer (CFO) of Florida, became the 17th member of Florida’s congressional delegation to back Donalds’ bid, as Donalds hopes to serve as the successor to Gov. Ron DeSantis (R), who is leaving office due to term limits. A press release on the endorsement notes that Patronis not only joins President Donald Trump in endorsing Donalds but also over one dozen members of the Florida congressional delegation, top Florida sheriffs, and three-quarters of the Republican caucus in the Florida House. “I’m in full agreement with President Trump: Byron Donalds is THE guy to lead Florida as our next Governor,” Patronis said, deeming Donalds an “America First fighter with the backbone and conviction to protect our freedoms, defend law and order, and stand up for every hardworking Floridian.” “As our Governor, Byron will be laser-focused on making the state more affordable so that every Floridian has the opportunity to live the American Dream,” he added. “I’m proud to call him a friend and to stand with President Trump in supporting Byron for Florida Governor.” Last month, 15 Florida sheriffs endorsed Donalds as he has established himself as the “law and order” candidate, as Breitbart News detailed: Pasco County Sheriff Chris Nocco, one of the 15 who endorsed Donalds, said in a statement detailed in the emailed press release that Donalds is the “leader that Florida needs in this moment, as we work and stand with President Trump to implement the mandate he received from the American people and the citizens of our great state of Florida.” He expressed confidence that Donalds will stand with law enforcement and added that he believes the congressman will “be innovative in his ideas to create jobs, improve education and make our economy more competitive.” Similarly, Brevard County Sheriff Wayne Ivey said in a statement that Donalds is a “proven no-nonsense champion for law enforcement who will always put our citizens, our cops, and our constitution first!” Sen. Rick Scott (R-FL), who also served as Florida’s governor, also threw his support behind Donalds over the summer, telling Floridians that Donalds will “strengthen our economy, fight for seniors and veterans, protect our communities, and above all, make Florida more affordable for every family.” Speaking to Breitbart News over the summer, Donalds said his vision is to take Florida “to the next level.” “We’re blessed to live in the best state in America,” Donalds said, hoping to build on what DeSantis has accomplished. “We have great leadership in our state.” “Governor DeSantis has led our state tremendously, and now it’s taking all that success and then now building upon it. What are we going to do about the future of transportation in our state, making sure it’s easier for our citizens to move through our cities … Insurance – we have to continue to do everything we can to drive prices low,” he said, adding that he believes Florida “can become the financial capital of the world in a decade.” Recent data indicates that Donalds’ campaign raised a whopping $31.5 million since launching in February, $9.2 million in the third quarter alone. Early polling has also showed Donalds leading his potential primary opponents.

Fiction: A rising novelist travels to a remote island at the invitation of his reclusive mentor

The Furnivall mansion was in the stomach of the island. It rose from the bottom of a deep glen, gurning against the wind which assaulted its crenellated walls. Through the windscreen, I watched the mansion rise before us – turrets, arches, cornices, arranged in a recursive order. Every time I visited, it arrested my attention and so, my conversation with Lewis subsided while the mansion interrupted us with its language of angles. The longer I looked, the more I had to wrestle with its dimensions, giving up, starting again. It seemed to have been forged from a series of disparate elements, balancing each other in a grotesque symbiosis. Many years before, Malcolm had moved with his family to this Hebridean island, so that he might better concentrate on his writing. It had taken three years to build the mansion, using sandstone from a neighbouring island and a few dozen craftsmen to whom Malcolm had passed his intricate design. Yet, the mansion also could very well have been created over time by deposits of living stone, forming pockets which became rooms, crystals that became windows. The essence of the place held the chaotic beauty of something grown. The western face of the mansion had started to crumble, hunks of scarred stone sinking into the tangled weeds which grew tall about the walls. Like a body shutting down, it was bringing the life force to its centre, allowing its limbs to wilt away. Lewis had grown up here with only his sister for company. I wondered, as he pulled the car into the drive, what a childhood in this place would have been like. What would it do to a mind, to live somewhere so solitary, to grow up in that intricate stack of empty rooms, surrounded by the encroaching wild? A knock on the car window and the door opened. Mrs Gibson, the housekeeper, hoisted me from the seat and began to mutter to herself as Lewis left the car running and vaulted up the front steps. ‘I’m starving,’ he said, going inside without once looking back. Exasperated, Mrs Gibson tugged at her long-lobed ears, which appeared to have grown longer since we’d last met. She was tall, imposing and increasingly haggard. “Lunch is being prepared inside,” she said. “I must get back so it doesn’t burn. I’m afraid I can’t show you to your room, but it’s made up. You remember –” “Where are the other servants?” She pulled at her ears again, then swept around the car, taking my valise from the boot, thrusting it at me, then leaning in through the driver’s door, turning off the engine. I peered in through the passenger door. “Mrs Gibson?” She checked through the windscreen to make sure Lewis had gone inside. Then, we faced each other over the gearstick. “Malcolm has fired all the house staff. It’s only me now.” I looked at her in disbelief. The mansion had never been particularly well cared for, and now, to fire all the servants but Mrs Gibson … Something drastic must have happened. I began to understand why Lewis had been so guarded with me in the car. I searched Mrs Gibson’s face and whispered, “What?” “I … I told him I couldn’t maintain it alone. He didn’t care.” “He gave no reason?” She leaned further over the gearstick, placed her red and calloused hand on the dashboard. “One of my girls followed him out to his writing shed. He caught her, and … and the next day, everyone was told to leave.” The writing shed. Malcolm had only taken me there once, by a convoluted route which I struggled to remember. When inside, he’d watched my every move. I recalled the look on his face: wary and searching. Sensing something, Mrs Gibson turned her head from me and looked to the mansion. She glanced down again, then began to brush at the dashboard with her hand, as if dusting it. There was a change in her demeanour – her movements were sharp, her expression severe. I looked through the windscreen towards the mansion, saw Clara in the drawing-room window. She was auburn-haired, cold-eyed and broad-shouldered, having swum competitively since the age of seven. The kind of person whose presence could be felt through windows, over large distances and possibly even through walls. She was watching. I remained there in stunned silence as Mrs Gibson closed the driver door and hurried back up the main steps. “The pheasant will get dry,” she said blackly. I emerged from the car, looked again to the drawing room window. Clara raised her closed fist, then unfurled her long fingers and gave a curt wave. Each action was slow, deliberate, muscular. She turned on her heel and left me reeling in the driveway. By now, the midday sun was high and cold, gazing down like a stone eye as I made my way, alone, into the Furnivall mansion. Standing in the main hall, I recalled how I’d felt like a stranger the first time I’d set foot in the mansion. Malcolm and Anwen had given me a tour, sharing stories about the place, laughing at little inside jokes, allowing me into their world. It had been overwhelming to be welcomed in the Furnivall household – a warren of curious and historied rooms. Before, I had wrestled with its complexity; now I surrendered, allowed myself to be swallowed. It was like hearing a poem: one had to succumb to its logic to know it. Though the pathways within were difficult to remember, I had started to draw a vague map of them in my mind. My room was on the first floor of the western wing, and the turning which led to it was signalled by a great stag skull hanging from the wall. I stopped beneath the pair of branching antlers and cast about. A spear of light came through the stained-glass window, shining down on the recessed alcoves in which there were chessboards, all in various states of play. Malcolm would often walk the corridors, setting compositions for himself. I recognised the Scandinavian opening on one of the boards and smiled. Every time I had played Malcolm, he’d beaten me with some variation on that opening – moving the queen out early and decimating my carefully arranged pieces. How like Malcolm, to ignore fundamentals and move the queen early. I sat down at the chessboard, rested my finger on Malcolm’s queen. Since my last visit, a rough hide had formed about me, blunting all experience, keeping joy from coming in. But as I took the queen in my hand, held it tightly, I felt that hide start to flake away. From nothing, I had gained so much. There was happiness in my life; I had a job I loved and people who cared for me. It had taken twenty-nine years of life to find, but I had a family here. Anwen and Malcolm had welcomed me. A part of me still didn’t believe it: who was I to deserve this? But as I sat there, holding the chess piece, I allowed myself to imagine a world in which I released the past from my grip, let it spin away in the wind. A world in which I sold my poor childhood house in Edinburgh, realised that this was my new home. A home I deserved. Excerpted with permission from The Lost Author, Chris Barkley, Vintage.

French Government Bucks Trend By Not Immediately Collapsing, But Now Macron Faces Impeachment Vote

The French Prime Minister narrowly avoided having his government collapsed for a second time in two weeks in a Parliamentary vote on Thursday, prompting the left-wing opposition to say they’ll try and impeach Emmanuel Macron directly to bring him down. Sébastien Lecornu, the now-two times French Prime Minister whose first government lasted just 12 hours last week faced two censure votes on Thursday morning — the French equivalent of a vote of no confidence which, if passed in the National Assembly, dissolves the government — by a narrow margin. Rebels needed 289 votes in the house of 577 and fell just short with 271 votes counted for dissolution in the first round. The failure to bring down the government on this occasion is, by this point, notable for French politics which has become unmanageably fractured, unstable, and to the eyes of some now stumbling towards the need to re-write the constitution and declare a new Republic. Emmanuel Macron has now presided, as President, over nine consecutive cabinet governments under a multitude of Prime Ministers, a record since the 13-year-rule of François Mitterrand in the 1980s and 90s. Yet even the dynamics of today’s votes clearly map onto the deep divisions in French politics which manifest in the composition of the Assembly, which leave it unable to build functional governing coalitions. The largest party in French politics today is Marine Le Pen’s sovereigntist National Rally, which mixes right-wing ideas on border controls and national sovereignty and left-wing on government spending, welfare, and taxes. Le Pen is a leading voice against President Macrons’ centrist rule but no party of the left — who consider her the greater enemy — will cooperate on a National Rally initiative to bring down Macron or his government. Speaking before the vote, Marine Le Pen said “This isn’t a political crisis, it’s a crisis of politicians, a crisis of tired old parties” created by their wrecking of political norms to keep her soverientrist party coming to power by any means. Consequently, the motion considered most likely to have been able to succeed today was one brought by the rainbow leftist coalition La France Insoumise (France Unbowed, ‘LFI’). Yet it faltered because one of France’s constellation of small left-wing parties — who sometimes get along but quite often do not — was successfully bought off by the pro-Macron Lecornu government with promises to delay pension reform. This party, the Socialists, came in for harsh criticism from its left-wing stable mates for having been bribed into keeping Lecornu in power and saving Macron’s skin. LFI founder Jean-Luc Mélenchon said had his motion had just 18 more votes Lecornu would have gone and the pressure for Macron to step down as President would have soared. Instead, he was “narrowly saved”, he said. LFI responded to today’s failure by invoking “popular and parliamentary resistance” and saying instead of calling another censure vote to bring down the cabinet, they would simply go directly for the President himself by attempting to impeach. They said in a statement: “[we] rebels want to identify and openly fight the person responsible for this situation: President Macron. He must go. We will therefore submit a new resolution to the National Assembly, along with the [left wing alliance] parliamentarians, with a view to his impeachment.” The socialists, and the Macronist coalition that voted to save the government today also came in for criticism from the right. Jordan Bardella, Le Pen’s protégé who will take over as the National Rally’s sovereigntist candidate for the Presidency should present legal bids to ban Le Pen from standing for election at all succeed said “bargaining” had saved Macron, but this had come at the expense of the national interest. “All those who today refused censorship will be responsible for the country’s forthcoming suffering”, Bardella warned. Much of the focus of opposition parties is on calling for fresh elections in the hope this would break the parliamentary deadlock in favour of their own faction. This could happen, but the divisions in French politics and the nation’s peculiar electoral system may entrench the mutually-loathing blocs in the Assembly further, without developing any working majority or scope for cooperation. It is for this that many observers, both domestic and foreign, speak openly of France stumbling towards the bloodless revolution of a new constitution and electoral system. As previously reported: At the heart of the political turmoil in Paris today is Macron’s ill-advised decision to call for snap legislative elections in July 2024 in the wake of his party’s trouncing in the EU Parliament by Marine Le Pen’s National Rally the month prior. With the populist party having come out on top of the first round of voting and threatening to take control of the National Assembly, Macron made the Machiavellian calculation of forming a strategic voting pact with the leftist New Popular Front to keep Le Pen and her allies from taking power. Yet all these manoeuvres managed to achieve was a three-way split in the parliament, which has effectively made governing functionally impossible, with no faction having the requisite votes to pass a much-needed budget as the country stares down the barrel of a full-on debt crisis.

Unchecked Defiance Sparks Rebellion” – Rev Manful

The Head Pastor of Global Ark of Grace Chapel, Reverend Sam Manful, has revealed that unchecked defiance sparks rebellion and must be worked on. In an interview with hostess Nana Asabea on Plan B FM's social and lifestyle programme, "Nyansapɔ Fie", he revealed that "the rebellion spirit is as sinful as witchcraft." Defiance, he says, originated from the devil who first defied God's instructions and led to rebellion. "Anything that resists authority in schisms, workplaces, churches, amongst others, is defiance which, when not checked, leads to rebellion. There could be emotional defiance which needs to be dealt with emotionally and not spiritually." He added, "Although not all defiance is a sin, the negative ones need to be checked so as not to lead to rebellion and open the spiritual door for spiritual forces that harm people." On her side, renowned speaker and Creative Director of Kess Millinery and Beads, Lady Elizabeth Kesewaa Nortey, attributed the cause of defiance to uncontrolled emotional imbalance, which sometimes roots from jealousy, pride, and the like, as Satan did. "Bleaching to attain the skin colour of others is also a defiance that leads to rebellion against the Creator, and vice versa." Mary Bright Abelenma Coffie, a fashion designer, youth counsellor, and Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) expert, said such people like to cause nuisance and put people's heads against each other, which doesn't yield positive results. "They unknowingly or knowingly, unconsciously or consciously do so, which doesn't help." By: Longman/Planbfmonline.com

The shootout took place on Monday early morning along the highway that connects Ensenada with San Quintin, Baja California. According to Mexico’s Semanario Zeta, locals called 911 after hearing sounds of gunfire along the highway. By the time authorities arrived, they found a white Chevrolet pickup that numerous gunshots had struck. As officers approached the vehicle, they found the bullet-riddled bodies of four men inside. On the side of the road, authorities found another vehicle that had been set on fire, and inside, they found two other bodies. The shooting comes at a time when rival factions of the Sinaloa Cartel have been waging a fierce turf war that has spread to various Mexican states. As Breitbart Texas reported, the turf war is tied to the 2024 arrest of Sinaloa Cartel kingpin Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada at the hands of the Chapitos faction of the same cartel. The Chapitos had lured El Mayo to a meeting in Sinaloa only to capture him, load him on a plane, and fly him north to the waiting hands of U.S. authorities. That arrest led to a fierce turf war between the two factions, which has lasted for over a year and has led to thousands of murders and forced disappearances throughout Mexico. The shootout in Baja California comes just days after Breitbart Texas reported that cartel gunmen left two banners threatening U.S. FBI Director Kash Patel, claiming that they would begin targeting U.S. citizens in response to raids and seizures done by Mexican authorities under pressure from the Trump administration.
