Former toilets and shelter, plus Valley Gardens archway, for sale as protected building

The former Shelter and Archway, that was built in 1927, formerly served as toilets, then later became a bus shelter, and is a protected building that 'represents an important element of Scarborough's Heritage Value'. The imposing stone archway forms the main entrance to Plantation Hill, also known as Valley Gardens, with ornamental gardens, a duck pond, and pretty hillside pathways that connect the town to the South Bay beach. It is being marketed as a whole, with development potential, by Align Chartered Surveyors, who report a great deal of interest from the local community particularly. But anyone with an interest in the property will have to act quickly as offers must be in by the closing date of November 3, 2025. Information about the building from the agent notes that it 'requires minor structural repairs and offers significant potential for sensitive restoration and re-use'. A spokeswoman for Align Chartered Surveyors said: "Although it has only been on the market for a short time, we have had a lot of interest in the building, due to its central position and the possibility of re-developing it for such use as a cafe type place. "We do expect a sale to take place given the number of enquiries we have had, and there are offers on the table." The property occupies a corner position at Valley Bridge Parade and Somerset Terrace, forming the gateway to Plantation Hill or Valley Gardens. The brochure for the property notes that "the surrounding area benefits from strong footfall, with Nicholson's Estate Agents and other retail units nearby, together with a 24-hour Tesco Superstore within close proximity’. Putin’s deputy security czar accuses Trump of waging war against Russia

Moscow, Oct 23 (PTI) Former Russian president Dmitry Medvedev on Thursday said the new US sanctions against Russia and President Donald Trump’s cancellation of the Budapest summit are “an act of war against Russia.” “If any of the numerous commentators still have any illusions, here’s what you get. The US is our enemy. And their talkative ‘peacekeeper’ is now fully on the warpath against Russia,” said Medvedev, who is also the deputy chairman of the national security council headed by President Vladimir Putin. Medvedev, who, unlike his boss (Putin), is known for belligerent statements against the West, wrote on his homegrown MAX channel that commentators would attempt to justify Trump’s acts by saying that he couldn’t do otherwise, that he was pressured by the American Congress. “This doesn’t change the main point: the decisions taken are an act of war against Russia. And now Trump has fully aligned himself with crazy Europe,” he underscored. “The latest swing of the Trump pendulum has a clear upside. Ukraine can now be attacked without regard for unnecessary negotiations and to achieve victory where it is truly possible—on the ground, not behind a table,” Medvedev voiced the views getting louder in Russia to transform the ongoing “Special Military Operation” in Ukraine into a full-fledged war with Kiev. Trump on Wednesday night announced the cancellation of a proposed summit in Budapest and clamped wide sanctions against Russian oil majors Rosneft and Lukoil and their subsidiaries, which extract more than 50 per cent of oil in Russia. Speaking on national broadcaster Vesti FM radio, a top expert, Igor Yushkov, said if India stops buying 1.6 -1.7 million BPD crude from Russia, the global prices will shoot up and the chain of middlemen will become longer. The Trump administration has doubled tariffs on Indian goods to a whopping 50 per cent, including a 25 per cent additional duty for India’s purchase of Russian crude oil. Commenting on the sanctions on Rosneft and Lukoil oil majors, Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said Russia will not face any particular problems. “Our country has developed a strong immunity to Western restrictions and will continue to confidently develop its economic and political potential,” Zakharova said at a regular briefing of the ministry. 2 army men save family of 3 after car loses control on Jodhpur-Jaipur highway

Jodhpur, Oct 23 (PTI) Timely and swift action by an army captain and his buddy saved the family of three, including a toddler, who got stuck inside their car after it fell into a roadside ditch on the Jodhpur-Jaipur highway on Thursday. The accident occurred on the highway near Kaparda in Jodhpur at about 8 am, when the family was heading towards Jaipur. As their car zoomed past a vehicle, in which army men, Captain Abhishek Choudhary and his buddy Naik Sri Ram, were travelling, one of its tyres burst. Subsequently, the car lost control, flipped, and fell into a roadside ditch. The army officer said they stopped their vehicle and rushed to the spot to help the car’s occupants — a man, his wife and their toddler son — were trapped inside. Its doors were jammed, and the family were not able to open them, said Choudhary. Seeing them in a critical and traumatic state, Choudhary and Sri Ram managed to break open the door of the car with the help of a local, who was around. They first rescued the toddler, followed by the mother and father. Choudhary said that the parents were safe as they were wearing seatbelts, but the child sustained minor injuries, as he was not wearing a seatbelt and flung forward to the front portion of the car. The officer alerted the local authorities and emergency services and left only after ensuring the assistance was underway. PTI COR AMJ AMJ

Regent, Secret Agent? Heist, Curse And The Indian Diamond Thieves In France Didn't Touch

A gang of four thieves carried out an audacious heist at Paris’s Louvre Museum, escaping on scooters with eight priceless crown jewels of France but curiously left behind one of the museum’s most famous treasures: the Regent Diamond, a gem with deep roots in India and a reputation for being cursed. According to Paris prosecutor Laure Beccuau, the stolen jewels- including diadems, necklaces and brooches once owned by French royalty- are valued at €88 million ($102 million). Louvre Loot The theft, which took place in just eight minutes on October 19, is one of the most brazen museum burglaries in decades. The jewels stolen included a pearl diadem and a diamond bodice bow belonging to Empress Eugénie, wife of Napoleon III; an emerald necklace and earrings once gifted by Napoleon to Marie-Louise; and a sapphire set worn by Queen Marie-Amélie de Bourbon and Queen Hortense of Holland. Also stolen was Empress Eugénie’s reliquary brooch, a chandelier-like diamond piece linked to France’s imperial era. Despite the scale of the theft, investigators were struck by what the burglars did not take- the Regent Diamond, one of France’s most valuable gems, estimated at $60 million. Regent Diamond And Its India Link The Regent Diamond traces its origins to the Golconda region of India, specifically the Kollur mine in Andhra Pradesh. Legend says it was discovered by a slave in the late 17th century, who hid the raw 410-carat stone inside a leg wound to smuggle it out of the mines. On his way to Madras (now Chennai), he sought help from an English sea captain to sell it abroad but the captain betrayed and murdered him, seizing the diamond. The stone was later cut and eventually purchased by Philippe II, Duke of Orleans, the regent of young King Louis XV- giving the gem its name, the Regent Diamond. Through the 18th and 19th centuries, it was used in the crowns of Louis XV and Louis XVI, and even adorned a hat worn by Marie Antoinette. After the French Revolution, it passed into the hands of Napoleon Bonaparte, who famously mounted it on his sword hilt, using the gem as a symbol of imperial power. Is Regent Diamond ‘Cursed’? Though dazzling in beauty, the Regent Diamond has long been associated with misfortune. The slave who found it was murdered, Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette were executed during the Revolution and Napoleon himself was twice exiled before dying on Saint Helena. Many in France’s art world now speculate that the Louvre thieves, aware of the gem’s bloody legend, may have intentionally avoided touching it.
