Column: Most celebrity documentaries are about image management, ‘Mr. Scorsese’ tries at times to go deeper

One of the subgenres ushered in by the streaming era is the celebrity documentary. It’s not that they didn’t exist previously, but the number of celebrity documentaries pumped out by streaming platforms over the past several years — usually made at the behest of (or at least, with the cooperation of) the subjects themselves — have a way of turning these projects into exercises in image management, stripped of anything too complicated or unexpected. Of the handful that have premiered just this month, only one — Apple’s examination of filmmaker Martin Scorsese — approaches anything close to absorbing. Let’s look at some of the others first. Amazon’s “John Candy: I Like Me” comes from the actor Colin Hanks, who has a sincere appreciation for Candy the actor and the person. That’s fine, though this kind of sentiment can tip over into something closer to admiration and hamstring a documentarian’s instincts. Candy died in 1994 at the age of 43 and obviously isn’t around to collaborate on the film, but any hopes that this would give Hanks more freedom are quickly dashed. It’s as probing as A&E’s “Biography” (which is apparently still churning out new episodes), hitting all the pertinent details with its compendium of interview and archival clips, but rarely offering meaningful insight. The three-part docuseries “Victoria Beckham,” arriving on the heels of her husband David Beckham’s 2023 docuseries, is the equivalent of Netflix ordering up “his & hers” towels for its celebrity documentary division. The self-interest is overt; both projects are produced by David Beckham’s company Studio 99. Notably, the project doesn’t tackle the reports of David Beckham’s infidelities and how this affected her experiences, her outlook, her choices. When asked by Variety about this omission, director Nadia Hallgren gives a word salad of an answer that includes this explanation: “Part of it was like, well, we don’t want to tell those stories.” Directors make these kinds of choices all the time. Documentaries aren’t journalism. Nor are they exhaustive encyclopedia entries. No one is required to bare their soul for the camera. But this choice seems designed to adhere to the dictates of a marketing plan. “Stiller & Meara: Nothing Is Lost” on Apple centers on the husband-and-wife comedy duo of Jerry Stiller and Anne Meara. It’s made by their son, Ben Stiller, whose level of fame has eclipsed that of his parents. Maybe that’s an impediment; when his sister says how difficult it was to see his star rise while she struggled, he goes silent. His response is the same when his now-adult children say his Hollywood aspirations have affected their relationships with him. As Stiller and Meara’s son, he’s perhaps also too close to his chosen subject matter to craft a film that could tell us something deeper about his parents’ comedy of friction in public, which had parallels to their dynamic in private. “I don’t know where the act ends and the marriage begins,” Meara says in an old interview, and it’s an intriguing throughline, but also one that isn’t further developed. Instead, what emerges is Stiller’s preoccupation with repeating the mistakes of his parents. There’s a sincerity in acknowledging this, but ultimately it’s a limited observation. Though the film includes reels and reels of home movies and audio tapes (apparently Jerry Stiller liked to record everything), the grainy footage becomes repetitive and, counterintuitively, doesn’t offer an intimate window into the lives of this family. Stiller was Jewish and Meara was Irish Catholic, but you get the sense that the culture within the home they created together was defined by more by show business than anything else. What’s most interesting about Stiller and Meara’s dynamic is their style of humor. Not just their cadence and pronunciation, but their blunt, direct approach. Nothing is couched in kinder terms. This is such a New York sensibility — ethnic New York — and it’s one that’s largely absent from pop culture at the moment. Another product of New York gets the documentary treatment in Apple’s “Mr. Scorsese,” with its exhaustive look back at Martin Scorsese’s career, and to a lesser degree, his personal life. The director is Rebecca Miller, who calls the project a “film portrait” — that’s literally how it’s described in the opening credits — which is worthy of an eyeroll. But to her credit, she does create an actual portrait of her subject, and one that’s often absorbing. Even so, Miller’s thoughtful efforts are perhaps too tentative at times, avoiding tougher scrutiny. A documentarian doesn’t need to be antagonistic to be effective, but a sharply thrown elbow or two isn’t necessarily a bad thing if you’re trying to shake someone from personal lore they’ve settled on. That may not have been Miller’s goal, but it’s the kind of energy that’s conspicuously missing from (and needed in) the five-part docuseries. Scorsese is interviewed at length and he’s a good talker. A detailed talker. Quick to laugh. He’s likable! You come away with a better understanding of his films and the different periods he was working in. But there’s no sense of discovery when he responds to Miller’s questions; you get the sense these are stories he’s told himself, about himself, for a very long time. It’s all very friendly. He’s not challenged on anything. Neither is the viewer. Even so, “Mr. Scorsese” is often rich viewing. Scorsese’s self-conception is that of the outsider who was never part of Hollywood’s favored circles, a sentiment that is perhaps somewhat disconnected from reality. Like anyone, he has faced challenges, both personally and professionally. But despite it all, he continually had opportunities to work. Someone was always there to fund his films, resulting in a new movie out every two or three years. This is not the trajectory of an underdog! But you sense an edge of “I had to fight for everything” in the stories he tells, and looking back, he’s not able to put some of that in perspective, knowing what he surely knows about the career prospects for filmmakers who aren’t white men. The series captures a vivid sense of his preoccupations and interests, shaped by the lower Manhattan neighborhood of Sicilian immigrants where he grew up. “Violence was imminent.” (There’s a funny observation from a childhood friend who talks about Scorsese’s short time in the seminary: “Him being a priest, that woulda been nice I guess, but I never saw that finishing.” His glasses are perched halfway down his nose so that he’s looking over the top of the frames. “He had a heavy eye for the ladies.”) Scorsese’s vices included a period of addiction that he discusses with an emotional distance. It’s unclear if that’s by design, or an unconscious protective function of his personality. Cocaine was his drug of choice and he suggests it offered an escape from a sense of failure around his broken marriages, the daughters he wasn’t raising, creative inspiration that had gone dry. It’s conspicuous that when Steven Spielberg talks about a frenzied sequence in “Goodfellas” where cocaine plays a prominent role — “Most movies have four gears; Marty has 14 gears in ‘Goodfellas,’ it just keeps shifting higher and higher and higher” — he makes no connection to Scorsese’s own understanding of cocaine, and how that was being translated to the screen. But then, Scorsese doesn’t make the connection, either. Feeling trapped — by a physical place, or by compulsions, expectations, insecurities and frustrations — is a subject he returns to again and again. Rage is another, but Scorsese’s chatty public persona is at odds with his own rage that he says was — and perhaps still is — roiling just beneath the surface. What’s the source of that? Only Isabella Rossellini, to whom he was once married, talks about this aspect of his personality with thoughtful, probing insight. He never hit her, but he could demolish a room. She says this with zero rancor, a smile almost playing at her lips. In hindsight, you sense, it all seems so absurd. The “violence from this minuscule body, asthmatic — it was like a volcano, it was terrifying.” But she has a theory about it: “This rage was part of the fuel to give him courage, because, you know, he was this little boy from Little Italy, and now was this big director who had to direct big films with a big budget.” He describes the violence of his films as true — things he’s witnessed, as opposed to a reflection of his own inner conflicts. Nor does not talk about how, or even if, being small and asthmatic might have affected his confidence and experiences growing up, where machismo was the lingua franca. You pick up clues through other conversations, though. “Taxi Driver” screenwriter Paul Schrader describes the film as an expression of male isolation, loneliness, pent-up anger and displacement. Scorsese says the Travis Bickles of the world are “humiliated by people,” which is what sets them off. The idea that it’s other people’s fault? It’s interesting that he phrases it this way, even all these years later. You keep waiting for him to reflect on abandoning his oldest children. The documentary is mostly focused on his creative output, but he also created these two human beings and apparently didn’t feel compelled to be part of their childhoods. He’s hardly the first. But it would have been interesting to hear his thoughts in hindsight. One of his daughters talks about feeling most connected to him — most cared for and doted on and part of his inner circle — not during a private family moment, but when she was an actor in “Age of Innocence.” What keeps Scorsese up at night? Who does he see when he looks in the mirror, besides the underdog? Those are questions left unaddressed in the docuseries. But perhaps some of the answers were always there in his movies.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. Explains How 'Valuable' Therapy is for Young NASCAR drivers

NASCAR is often regarded as the pinnacle of stock racing, with the Cup Series being the most difficult category for drivers to excel in. Even veteran drivers have failed to achieve coveted title wins in the sport, as it is even more difficult for young drivers who are just entering the sport. Because of this, the drivers often face self-doubt and also criticism from outside. T o tackle this, NASCAR Hall of Famer Dale Earnhardt Jr. has talked about therapy and how important it is for young drivers of the sport. Dale Earnhardt Jr. had a great conversation with the young Truck Series driver Rajah Caruth, who suffered from multiple ups and downs in the 2025 season. Caruth has had a great season so far despite the occasional problems and is looking strong in his championship ambitions in the playoffs. Still, he had some moments of self-doubt and difficulties as he talked about going to therapy with Dale Earnhardt Jr. Notably, Dale Earnhardt Jr raced in NASCAR for quite a while and is no stranger to the difficulties that come with it. As such, Dale Jr. insisted that therapy was super valuable for NASCAR drivers, especially the up-and-coming young ones. The 51-year-old continued that therapy was necessary as the environment today was very complex. Dale Earnhardt Jr. explained that there were a lot of conversations and negative comments hurled by people on the internet. Amid all the noise, it was necessary to take a step back and block the noise and only focus on the important things for a NASCAR driver. As such, Dale Jr. asserted that therapy was necessary to understand not only how to be a better friend, but a great teammate on track as well, along with other improvements. I think it’s (therapy) very valuable for guys that are in sports because the environment today is just really complex. There’s a lot going on, a lot of conversations happening around you and publicly online. Being able to manage that, block out the noise, and know what to focus on is important. I get some really valuable information in those conversations about managing expectations, how to be a better friend, a better partner, and also, in a professional sense, how to be a better teammate. Dale Earnhardt Jr. said on Dale Jr Download. Dale Earnhardt Jr. accepts therapy is ‘not always comfortable’ NASCAR drivers put their lives on risk when they sit in the cockpit and do not stop racing until the chequered flag is waved or they crash out on track. In addition to this, the contractual agreements and future uncertainty for a driver definitely take a toll, especially on their mental health. Amid all these problems, going to therapy and talking it all out isn’t always comfortable, even Dale Earnhardt Jr. accepted this fact.

Bestselling author Jodi Picoult pushes back after her musical is canceled by Indiana high school

By MARK KENNEDY NEW YORK (AP) — Author Jodi Picoult has the dubious honor of being banned in two mediums this fall — her books and now a musical based on her novel “Between the Lines.” “I’m pretty sure I’m the first author who has now had censorship occur in two different types of media,” Picoult says. “Honestly, I’m not out here to be salacious. I am writing the world as it is, and I am honestly just trying to write about difficult issues that people have a hard time talking about because that is what fiction and the arts do.” The superintendent of Mississinewa High School in Gas City, Indiana, canceled a production last week of “Between the Lines,” saying concerns were raised over “sexual innuendo” and alcohol references in the musical. Jeremy Fewell, the superintendent, did not respond to a request for comment. “It’s devastating for us to know that these kids who put in hundreds of hours of hard work had that torn away from them because of the objections of a single parent,” says Picoult. “What I know, perhaps better than most people, as someone whose books have been banned, is when one parent starts deciding what is appropriate and what is inappropriate for the children of other parents, we have a big problem.” Picoult noted that the same Indiana high school has previously produced “Grease,” where the sexual innuendo and alcohol abuse is much greater, including a pregnancy scare, sex-mad teens and the line “Did she put up a fight?” “Between the Lines” centers on Delilah, an outsider in a new high school, who finds solace in a book and realizes she has the power to write her own story and narrate her own life. “It is a very benign message. And it’s actually a really important one for adolescents today,” says Picoult. The original work, which features a nonbinary character, had already been edited with licensed changes to make it more palatable for a conservative audience, including removing any reference to the nonbinary character’s gender orientation. The production was scheduled for Halloween weekend at the Gas City Performing Arts Center. The show has music and lyrics by Elyssa Samsel and Kate Anderson, and a story by Timothy Allen McDonald, based on the 2012 novel by Picoult and her daughter, Samantha van Leer. It played off-Broadway in 2022. Picoult, the bestselling author of “My Sister’s Keeper” and “Small Great Things,” has also written about the moments leading up to a school shooting in “Nineteen Minutes,” which was banned 16 times in the 2024-2025 school year, according to PEN America, making her the nation’s fourth most-banned author. “I had 20 books banned in one school district in Florida alone because of a single parent’s objection and she admitted she had not read any of the books,” said Picoult, a PEN America trustee. “She said that they were banned for ‘mature content and sexuality.’ There were books of mine that did not even have a single kiss in them.” The uptick in book banning has spread to stages as well. The Dramatists Legal Defense Fund has documented recently challenged plays and musicals from states including Pennsylvania, Florida, Indiana, Kansas, Ohio and New Jersey after parents or teachers complained that the works’ social themes weren’t appropriate for minors. The Northern Lebanon High School, in Fredericksburg, Pennsylvania, canceled a 2024 production of “The Addams Family,” citing concerns over scenes with violence, children smoking and subtle queer themes. Paula Vogel’s play “Indecent,” which explores a flashpoint in Jewish and queer theatrical history, was abruptly canceled in Florida’s Duval County in 2023 for “inappropriate” sexual dialogue. Last year, the Educational Theatre Association asked more than 1,800 theatre educators in public and private schools across the U.S. about censorship. More than 75% of respondents reported pressure to reconsider their play and musical choices during the 2023-24 school year. “We are not protecting kids,” said Picoult. “We are robbing them of materials that we use to deal with an increasingly complex world.”

From winning to writing, Charlie Sheen’s comeback tour dives into ‘The Book of Sheen’

Nearly 15 years ago, actor Charlie Sheen went on his “Torpedo of Truth” tour to tell the world what really happened after being fired from “Two and a Half Men,” but his substance abuse, not the truth, torpedoed that tour. Now, after maintaining his sobriety since December 2017, Sheen is back on the road to once again. This time, he plans to leave everything on the table through an in-depth discussion of his memoir “The Book of Sheen.” The memoir, out now, was released last month in tandem with the tell-all Netflix documentary “aka Charlie Sheen.” “I still have stories to share that aren’t in the documentary and the book. I want this to be audience-oriented and for them to ask the questions they’ve wanted to ask more directly,” Sheen said during a recent phone interview. The actor is now on tour discussing the book. “This tour was actually my idea, how about that?” Sheen said. According to Sheen, the 2011 tour, “My Violent Torpedo of Truth/Defeat Is Not an Option,” was not his idea, and he says he wasn’t in the right state of mind to do it. While some shows were reportedly well-received, others were met with chants demanding refunds from the audience, and his frequent use of the term “winning” became indelibly memeified. Much like the documentary, “The Book of Sheen” delves into the life of the four-time Emmy-nominated star of “Two and a Half Men,” who was once one of Hollywood’s highest-paid television actors. Sheen’s memoir details his upbringing, his rise to fame, and his fall from grace, fueled by drug addiction that led to an erosion of his public persona and personal life. Before heading to Cabazon, Sheen talked with Southern California News Group about his upcoming book tour, why sports provide the ultimate inspiration, and what he imagines the last “Two and a Half Men” would look like had he stayed on. The following conversation was edited for length and clarity. Q: What made you want to do the documentary “aka style Charlie Sheen” and your new book? I felt like the road to a comeback or a path to a reset had to happen somehow. It had to be me finally telling the stories as they actually happened. There’s enough time now that I have perspective on the past events. I felt like if I was given a platform to talk about my life, my decisions, and why things went a certain way, it would quiet a lot of the other stuff out there about me. The plan wasn’t to do them at the same time. They just happened to line up that way. The universe was just like, “Let’s turn this into a one-two punch.” The book, in particular, tells some of the stories differently, and I can tell them in more detail. Also, I wanted to leave something behind. Now you have three choices: you can watch it, read it, or listen to it. Mission accomplished. Q: How is the book different than the documentary? I didn’t control the outcome of the documentary and wasn’t a producer on it. The book is different because I had complete autonomy to write it and didn’t work with a ghostwriter. I wrote the whole thing myself because I knew that was the only way to deliver the authentic version. With the book, it’s different. Whereas I would have five or seven minutes in the chair speaking into a camera for the documentary, I had two weeks to let my own internal dialogue create a story on the page. Some of those stories are going to be a little different, because I would remember things as I was writing, after we’d already shot my interviews for the doc. So it wasn’t like, “Oh, this needs to be different.” It was more like “Oh, shoot, I forgot that piece. I’m just going to add it now.” But that’s why I don’t want people to feel like because they’ve seen the doc, they don’t need to read the book. I think there’s just a different experience of the same terrain, but through a different lens and medium. Q: At one point in the documentary, Slash tells you that he had never seen anyone use the amount of drugs you did and live. Was this before that infamous Nikki Sixx overdose or after? It was connected to that. That’s a story that I talk about in the “Escape from LA” chapter in the book, in more detail. But essentially, on the way to court, I stopped at a house where Slash and Mira Sorvino were. I was still trying to talk them into basically helping me by harboring a fugitive and keep the party running. He was just like, “Dude, no, man, this is not open for discussion. If you don’t go today, you’re going to die.” So to hear that from anybody is a pretty scary and very deliberate message, but to hear it from Slash puts a lot more mustard on that hot dog. Q: What was the most challenging part of writing the book? It was mostly me, myself and I, but I had a terrific, excellent editor, Aimée Bell. I would finish a chapter and send it to her; she would read it, love parts of it, and take notes. One of her notes was to keep going and writing. So there was always that. The next day, there I am, again, staring at the blank screen. With the self-imposed creative pressure of “They loved the last one, so is this one gonna live up to it?” There were times when I would write for three days — 1000 words — read it back, and literally just throw it in the garbage. I’d think, “We’re better than this. We’ve set a bar. Let’s honor it.” Then it’s also about knowing when to end a book. If it’s about yourself and your story is still being told in real time, how do you know? I would ask Aimée that question, and she would always say, “The book will let you know. The book will tell you.” I still don’t quite understand what she meant by that. But that’s a good excuse if someone says, “Hey, I feel like it kind of cut off there a little bit abruptly, like ‘The Sopranos’ ending.” I’d say, “Hey, man, I was just listening to what the book told me.” Q: What was it like to go head-to-head with your dad against Michael Jordan? It still exists in my memory as a dream. It felt like I was in a dream, doing it, and so remembering it has those fuzzy edges, like you’d see in a cheap movie when they go into a flashback. There was a moment that wasn’t part of the documentary, when, to warm up, Michael challenged the two best players on the varsity team at the high school we were playing at. It was him and me versus the two guys. So before we started, I told him I’d never played on a team. I know baseball inside and out, but I don’t know the mechanics and geometry of basketball. He said, “Don’t worry about it. Just get the ball and lob it close to the rim, and I’ll take care of the rest.” So literally, he loses his guy, takes off from the free-throw line or somewhere along the baseline, and I would throw something up, just kind of in the vicinity, and he would just windmill it home. It was insane. Q: What do you think makes sports give us the confidence to persevere in our everyday lives as spectators? There’s an acknowledgement in my book at the very end of thanking Freddie Freeman for that game one grand slam walk off. I included it because I want people to know that kind of greatness is inspiring and contagious. It happened at a point where I was stuck in the book, I hit that wall, and I just saw that, and I was like, “Okay, I don’t have to do anything as physically pressure-packed as that to keep going.” It was like a springboard of sorts into just knowing that I have to be called to a higher order because of what I’ve just witnessed. Q: What sports are you keeping up with? I keep up with all of them. Baseball is my first and deepest love, and I’ve been a Cincinnati Reds fan my whole life. We got smoked in the first round, but that’s all right. Jim Day, who’s their field reporter and occasional broadcast announcer, will text back and forth. That’s why he’s thanked in the book. We’ll text mid-game, the entire season and our running theme this season, no disrespect to the team, was, ‘If they get in, who are they really going to beat? Are they going to beat Milwaukee, the Cubs, the Dodgers, the Padres?” So we kind of knew it going in. But that said, it’s Terry Francona’s first year at the helm, and he does what they couldn’t do the past five. Q: After “Two and a Half Men,” you had some die-hard supporters who were egging you on in a way that seemed like they wanted to fuel the spectacle of it all. How do you feel about the state of spectacle in our society today, in celebrity culture? There’s so much more attention and focus on mental health today, and rightfully so. People need help. I was a guy who, during that tour run, really needed some help. The book gets into a lot of that with just a few more peeks behind those curtains that the doc doesn’t explore. If it hadn’t been such a celebration, it would have been like a rallying cry to get me the help I needed. At the time, they were writing rap songs and folk ballads about me, which fueled me. And, of course, I own my part in that, staying connected to it and not taking a step back. It was a mashup of so many different elements and just so many things that I was trying to process or come to terms with, including the grand state of denial about a lot of things in my life. I don’t know if that same thing could happen again today. Q: What do you think the last episode of “Two and a Half Men” would look like had you stayed on the show? Maybe something like, I hand the deed of the house to Alan, and I say, “I have some places to explore,” and I leave. Alan was constantly being thrown out, and every year, there were a couple of episodes where it went down like that. So what if I just left, but left Alan with this incredible gift and opportunity to have a new life with his son on the beach, and let him deal with Rose? Maybe something like that. It’s tough to find that “Friends” ending, where somebody in that grand finale suggests they all get a cup of coffee and then brilliantly, Matthew Perry says, “Okay, where?” Then you’re done and out. I’m sure we could have found something like that, but if there’s ever a reboot, we can lean into that.

NHRC notice to Health Ministry, FSSAI on 'widespread reuse of cooking oil'

TIL CreativesRepresentative Image The NHRC has issued a notice to the Union Health Ministry and Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) over a complaint raising concerns on alleged "widespread reuse of cooking oil" in the country. The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) directed a probe into the allegations and the furnishing of a state-wise report according to the proceedings of the case. It asked to submit an action taken report within two weeks. The allegations made in the complaint prima facie seem to be "violations" of the human rights of the victims, reads the proceedings, dated October 22. The complainant, founder of Sarthak Samudayik Vikas Evam Jan Kalyan Sanstha, Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, has raised "serious concerns about the widespread reuse of cooking oil in India". He pointed out that despite FSSAI's 'RUCO -- Repurpose Used Cooking Oil' campaign and policies promoting bio-diesel at the ground level, small hotels, roadside eateries and food vendors allegedly "repeatedly reuse or resell used cooking oil, which poses severe public health risks, including cancer, heart diseases and liver disorders," it says.Live Events Additionally, discarded oil contaminates water and soil, causing environmental pollution, reads the proceedings. The complainant sought urgent intervention of the Commission and requested to consider it as a "human rights issue" affecting public health, and to direct enforcement agencies (FSSAI, pollution control boards, municipal authorities) to "strictly implement" regulations, establish authorised oil purification and reuse centres, and launch awareness campaigns to sensitise citizens about the dangers of reused cooking oil, it adds. A bench of the NHRC, presided by its member Priyank Kanoongo has taken cognisance of it under section 12 of the Protection of Human Rights Act, 1993. "The Registry is directed to issue a notice to the chairman, Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, government of India, New Delhi, with directions to get the allegations made in the complaint inquired into, and to provide a state-wise report, in the matter," it says. Celtics’ Anfernee Simons ‘in shock’ over Chauncey Billups arrest

NEW YORK — Celtics guard Anfernee Simons was stunned Thursday to learn that his former head coach had been arrested as part of a wide-ranging federal gambling investigation. Chauncey Billups, Simons’ coach in Portland for the last four seasons, was one of more than 30 individuals charged in connection with an alleged Mafia-backed scheme to rig poker games. Billups was charged with wire fraud conspiracy and money laundering conspiracy. “It hit me pretty tough, for sure,” Simons, who was traded to Boston this offseason, said after Friday’s morning shootaround at Madison Square Garden. “Just in shock. And obviously, I’ve got a great relationship with Chauncey. Even after the trade, he’s checking in on me and I’m checking in on him. So we had a great relationship, and I think it’s an unfortunate situation for him to be in, especially for him and his family, all the media attention that’s coming in, the scrutiny. It’s just an unfortunate situation.” Billups was not named in a separate investigation targeting illegal sports betting, but an unidentified co-conspirator in that case matched his description — a former NBA player from 1997-2014 who has been an NBA coach since at least 2021 (the year Billups was hired by the Trail Blazers) and resides in Oregon. The federal indictment alleges that, before a game on March 24, 2023, the co-conspirator informed one of the defendants in the case, Eric Earnest, “that the Trail Blazers were going to be tanking” and sitting several of their best players “to increase their odds of getting a better pick in the upcoming NBA draft.” This information allegedly was relayed to Earnest before it became public, leading associates of Earnest to place more than $100,000 in bets against Portland. Simons, a Trail Blazers starter at the time, was one of the players who did not play in the game, which Portland lost 124-96. He said he was aware of any message to tank while he was with the franchise. “Not to my knowledge,” Simons said. “We get told to play. We’re not charged by the minutes, you know what I mean? So you just play until you come out of the game, or you don’t play. So it was really that simple. I don’t think I was told anything to me in general.” Billups, a Basketball Hall of Famer who signed a multi-year contract extension earlier this year, was placed on leave following his arrest and replaced by interim head coach Thiago Splitter. The Blazers had just played their season opener one night earlier. “I texted (former Blazers teammate Damian Lillard) when stuff happened,” Simons said. “I just asked if everybody was all right in the situation. It’s tough, you know what I mean? You played one game, and your coach is not there no more. You went to training camp and all this stuff, and he was the coach, and now he’s not anymore. So that could be tough on players dealing with that at the beginning of the season. That’s definitely a tough situation to be in. But I’ll gradually check in on everybody and see how they’re doing about the situation and see how they handle it. But I think they’re a pretty resilient team, and they’ll get through it regardless.” The sports betting probe also uncovered several other examples of NBA players or coaches allegedly relaying inside information to bettors, including one involving former Celtics guard Terry Rozier when he was a member of the Charlotte Hornets. Rozier was one of three current or former NBA players arrested Thursday, along with Billups and Damon Jones. (Jones was charged in both investigations.) This scandal, Simons said, underscored how careful players need to be when discussing internal team matters with friends and acquaintances. “It’s always been a topic,” the eighth-year pro said. “Obviously, gambling in the sports world is becoming a bigger thing, and we’ve just got to make sure the players are aware of all the risks of simple conversations with different people about the game or complicated information. And so you’ve just got to be careful with those conversations. So that’s what they tell us, because it can be a tricky situation when you feel like you’re having a casual conversation with a friend or a mutual friend, and they’re trying to get information out of you. So it’s a hard situation to be in. You’ve just got to be smart in that situation and know if it’s not public, don’t say it.”

Samara Joy reflects on her Grammy wins and the creative journey behind ‘Portrait’

By LESLIE AMBRIZ LOS ANGELES (AP) — Samara Joy’s voice has the ability to transform listeners to the early jazz clubs, filling them with warm nostalgia for legends like Ella Fitzgerald and Sarah Vaughan. At 25, Joy is a five-time Grammy winning recording artist, whose album, “Linger Awhile” won her best new artist and best jazz vocal album in 2023. She’s been praised by artists like Chaka Khan, Regina King and Quincy Jones and has amassed a large following of her Gen-Z peers on TikTok, introducing a new generation to jazz. Last year, Joy released “Portrait,” her third and most personal studio album allowing listeners into the tension between excitement and feeling overwhelmed that often follows a whirlwind of accolades and success. Her first original song “Peace of Mind” fully captures this moment. “I wrote it in a time where I was really questioning whether I could continue or not because I was so exhausted,” said Joy. “I reminded myself through that Sun Ra composition that I have experienced something wonderful, and it doesn’t have to be the end all be all. This is just the beginning … this is just a springboard for all of the other creative ideas that I have and what I feel like I have to offer.” For Joy, releasing “Portrait” was a creative challenge and a turning point toward trusting her creative instincts. “It’s taught me a lot about what I can do and to stand firm in the creative vision and the direction that I see for myself,” she said. Joy sat down with The Associated Press to talk about life post-Grammy wins, how diving into “Portrait” helped her grow as an artist and what it means to make her mark on the classic genre. This interview has been edited for brevity and clarity. AP: How does it feel to look back on “Portrait” and how have you grown from that moment into the new projects that you’re working on? JOY: This album was a turning point. Because I feel like it was the first time I really had to make a decision about what my path was going to be. With the first two albums, it was just songs that I loved and felt like I could interpret as my own. And this album, “Portrait,” was the first time I felt like I took the reins of creative direction and band mates and songs. And honestly kind of opened up even more to my band mates and said, arrange. I want you guys to orchestrate this next era. So, it was definitely a big leap, I think, from maybe what people thought I should do after the second album after the best new artist. And I think this album taught me the importance of patience and not rushing to stay relevant or spark up a moment or just stay in that moment. It taught me to just take my time and really wait until you have something you feel like you have to say. AP: I want to go back to that moment of winning best new artist. Talk to me about that moment and kind of having this surreal moment of “Oh wow, I’m being celebrated by my idols and by people that I’ve looked up to for years.” JOY: I never expected to be nominated. I never thought that that was a possibility, at least so early on in my career. Even thinking about it now, I can see everybody still and still feel the way that I felt that night. It’s a night that I will never ever forget. And I’m thankful. I’m really thankful to everybody who believed in me enough to allow me to have that moment, who voted, who listened to my music, who support me then and still support me now. Which is why I never want to lose sight of what I do this for. AP: You’ve been praised by Chaka Khan, by Regina King. Was there any one specific person that once you connected with them, they shared something about your music that influenced the way that you looked at yourself and your own approach? JOY: A couple years ago I did the Hollywood Bowl and it was a birthday celebration for Quincy Jones — Patti Austin, I got the chance to sing alongside of her. And backstage, you know, she was funny and sharp and quick, but she was just very supportive and very honest. And that meant a lot to me from somebody who has been in the industry for as long as she has and collaborated with Quincy Jones and George Benson and James Ingram and all these people to be so encouraging on this new journey as I kind of embark on it.” AP: Does it feel like an act of reclamation and resistance being a Black woman in jazz who is at the top who is making it in the mainstream and bringing the genre back to a new generation? JOY: I guess I never thought about it that way. There are so many wonderful artists that I draw inspiration from — Billy Strayhorn, Duke Ellington through the course of their lives contributed to the changing to the evolution of the music that we call jazz. I know that there’s always gonna be a certain sense of nostalgia and a certain artist or song that people can connect to or relate to easily because jazz is not mainstream, at least to me, I don’t think unless it is really, really, really, really watered down, I don’t think it will be. But it’s an opportunity for me to once again be authentic and show people like, “Have you ever heard of this Abby Lincoln song?” Or maybe this Thelonious Monk song doesn’t have lyrics, but I can put lyrics to them and share a different, you know, a different compositional style. And a different voice in jazz. And so I guess that’s my way of reclaiming it and educating in a way and just introducing people to the sound that they may not recognize at first, but good music is good music. AP: You get compared to Ella Fitzgerald and Sarah Vaughan. What does that mean to you? JOY: I feel very honored and sometimes undeserving because of how new my relationship to their music was initially. I hadn’t really listened to their music or their voices at all growing up and getting introduced to them in college, it just felt like another world had opened up and I felt like I wanna sing, I wanna be able to move people the way that they move me with their voices.

How do you know if you have a gambling problem?

NEW YORK (AP) — The stunning indictment that led to the arrest of more than 30 people, including Miami Heat guard Terry Rozier and other NBA figures, on charges of illegal sports betting has drawn new scrutiny of the booming business of professional sports gambling across the U.S. Since widespread legalization, the multibillion-dollar industry has made it easy to place wagers on everything from the outcome of games to that of a single play with just a few taps of a cellphone. It’s just about impossible to go to a basketball, football, baseball or other pro game today — or watch a matchup on TV — without seeing ads for sports betting. Fans can place wagers from their stadium seats, while “Bet” tickers scroll on TV sports broadcasts. Star athletes are frequently at the center of ads promoting it all. Regulating sports wagering has proven to be a challenge — and experts warn about the ramifications for gamblers who typically lose money. Professional leagues’ own role in promoting gambling has raised eyebrows. Sports betting also faces criticism for opening the door to addictive gambling. “The fact that it’s normalized, the advertising is aggressive, it’s available 24/7, the micro bets — all of this is adding up to tremendous increase in usage across individuals,” Wayne Taylor, a professor of marketing at Southern Methodist University, told the Associated Press, citing algorithms and other incentives betting platforms use to increase engagement. Isaac Rose-Berman, whose research focuses on sports betting as a fellow at the American Institute for Boys and Men, noted that platforms make the most off of returning “biggest losers.” Recent research suggests that young men in low-income communities are particularly affected by financial consequences tied to sports gambling. “Upwards of 90% of sports bettors are not really going to experience significant negative impacts — but it’s really concentrated among those big losers and it’s going to be devastating for them,” he said. So, how do you know if you have a gambling problem? If you’re hiding the fact that you gamble to your friends and family, do it when you’re stressed and experience mood changes, you may be showing warning signs of a gambling addiction. "They didn't deserve the hate"- Fans emotional over LE SSERAFIM's seeming reference to April 2024 Coachella backlash in 'Pearlies'

On October 24, 2025, LE SSERAFIM released their B-side track Pearlies (My oyster is the world) as part of their latest single album, Spaghetti. It also features BTS’ j-hope on the title track.Pearlies immediately caught the attention of fans for its heartfelt lyrics and soothing tone. It served as a striking contrast to the bold vibe of Spaghetti. The lines reflect resilience and appreciation. The track is co-written by member Huh Yun-jin. It explores the theme of transformation, turning hardship into beauty, just as an oyster forms a pearl. The track’s lyrics include emotional references like“The storm in April, please stop//Hurt like a b*tch but baby we're alive.”Fans quickly linked to the group’s difficult experience following their 2024 Coachella debut. At the time, the group faced intense criticism over perceived vocal issues. It sparked a wave of online backlash that lasted months. The new release seems to acknowledge that storm while focusing on healing and gratitude. The song also draws from Yunjin’s personal remarks shared during the group’s 2025 world tour in Incheon. She spoke about wanting to protect the fans who stayed beside them through thick and thin and compared that bond to the slow creation of a pearl.Pearlies expands on this sentiment, transforming pain into purpose and making FEARNOT (the fandom) the “pearl” at the center of their world.Fans took to social media to express emotional reactions after hearing the song. An X user, @withbanqtan, wrote,"stop oh my god they didn’t deserve the hate at all."khaliah⁷ 🍝★ @withbanqtanLINKstop oh my god they didn’t deserve the hate at allMany said the lyrics brought back memories of the difficult period following Coachella and praised LE SSERAFIM for turning hate into strength. The song’s title plays on the proverb, “The world is my oyster,” but flips its meaning. Instead of claiming the world, the group treasures their own “oyster,” symbolizing their fans. The track draws inspiration from Yunjin’s reflections during LE SSERAFIM's 2025 world tour. She compared her artistic growth to the formation of a pearl, shaped by friction and time. According to Billboard Philippines' latest interview, Yunjin states,“[Also], our B-Side track “Pearlies (My oyster is the world)” is a play on the saying “The world is my oyster,” which we also used in the track “The World Is My Oyster” from our debut album.”nat ☆彡 🍝 @yunjinrsLINKyunjin said they flipped the words & meaning of “the world is my oyster” from debut to “my oyster is the world” for pearlies. in the beginning, it was about talking ownership of something that wasn’t theirs but now they realized that everything they need is the small oyster they“The original saying carries an attitude of taking ownership, of conquering something that isn’t mine and making it my own – which felt very fearless and confident, and was a message we wanted to deliver back then. But by flipping the words, we also flip the meaning: within the small oyster I already have, there’s everything I need. For us, that’s FEARNOT. They are our oysters, and therefore our world,” Yunjin continued. The single album also includes the energetic eponymous title track Spaghetti (feat. j-hope of BTS). It is a playful, confident number that uses food metaphors and witty wordplay. In 2025, LE SSERAFIM solidified their position as one of K-pop’s leading girl groups with a successful EASY CRAZY HOT world tour and multiple accolades. It includes the Minister of Culture, Sports, and Tourism commendation. They also became the first K-pop girl group to perform on America’s Got Talent. With Pearlies and Spaghetti, LE SSERAFIM has shown both vulnerability and confidence.

Nexperia, the new crisis looming for Europe's carmakers

European automakers already buffeted by US tariffs and a rocky shift toward electric vehicles now face a new threat: a shortage of key semiconductors supplied by Chinese-owned Nexperia. Beijing is locked in a standoff with Dutch officials who invoked a Cold War-era law in September to effectively take over the company, whose factories are in Europe. Carmakers as well as parts suppliers have already warned of shortages that would force stoppages at production lines across the Continent. Who is Nexperia? The company produces relatively simple technologies such as diodes, voltage regulators and transistors that are nonetheless crucial, as vehicles increasingly rely on electronics. The chips are mainly found in cars but also in a wide range of industrial components as well as consumer and mobile electronics like refrigerators. It makes them in Europe before sending them to China for finishing, and are then re-exported back to European clients. Based in the Netherlands and once part of electronics giant Philips, it was bought by Wingtech Technology of China in 2018. But in September, the Dutch government took the unusual step of taking over the company, citing its "Goods Availability Law" of 1952 to ensure essential items. In response, China banned any re-exports of Nexperia chips to Europe, igniting fresh geopolitical tensions. Why is the automotive sector vulnerable? Nexperia supplies 49 percent of the electronic components used in the European automotive industry, according to German financial daily Handelsblatt. The European auto lobby ACEA warned this month that production would be seriously hit. "Without these chips, European automotive suppliers cannot build the parts and components needed to supply vehicle manufacturers and this therefore threatens production stoppages," the group said. For Germany alone, analysts at Deutsche Bank forecast a production drop of 10 percent while warning of a 30-percent cut in a "worst-case scenario". How are automakers responding? German auto giant Volkswagen has warned that it cannot not rule out "short term" production stoppages, while emphasising that it is searching for alternative suppliers. Nexperia does not supply it directly but some of its parts suppliers use its chips. Bosch, for example, says it has not yet reduced employee shifts at its German sites "but we are preparing to do so at our Salzgitter site", a spokesman told AFP. But French parts maker Valeo said it had "visibility for the coming weeks" with regards to "all its components". It said it had found alternatives for "95 percent of the volumes" bought each year from Nexperia, but "they haven't yet been approved by our clients". Other suppliers? According to OPmobility, another French parts maker, Nexperia's chips, while widely used, are not "unique" in terms of technology and therefore "easily substitutable". But suppliers have to get the new products approved by automakers, which cannot be done quickly. "They're looking frantically for other suppliers but these firms cannot build production capacity overnight," said Ferdinand Dudenhoeffer, director of Germany's Center Automotive Research institute. "In the worst case this situation could go on for 12 to 18 months," he told AFP. He added however since the disruptions cause by global lockdowns during the Covid-19 pandemic, "we've learned to pay more attention, both among general management and purchasing teams". In any case, Dudenhoeffer said, "100 percent protection against supply disruptions is impossible -- or in any case prohibitively expensive". Source: AFP

Over 300 schools in the national capital received bomb threat emails on Friday morning, prompting authorities to evacuate the premises for a thorough inspection, officials said. According to the fire department, the first alert was received at 8.15 am regarding a bomb threat at the CRPF School in Sector 16, Dwarka. Another threat was reported at 8.20 am from Sant Darshan Public School in Nangloi. At approximately 8.51 am, a similar call came from Shanti Gyan Niketan in the Goyla Dairy area, followed by a fourth threat at 10.33 am from Andhra School in Prasad Nagar. Other affected institutions included Blue Bells International School, DPS Dwarka, Modern School Barakhamba, St Stephen's College, along with numerous government and private schools across North, South, and West Delhi. The threatening email was sent by a group identified as 'Terrorizers 111', which has a history of sending similar threats, officials said.Live Events The sender claimed that C4 explosives had been placed around the school buildings and demanded a response within 24 hours, stating, "You have 24 hours to react or face the blood pool." However, the bomb threat was later determined to be a hoax. Multiple teams from the Delhi Fire Service, local police, bomb disposal units, and dog squads were dispatched to each location. An official stated, "All premises were thoroughly checked, and no suspicious items were found. The calls were declared hoaxes after verification."Add as a Reliable and Trusted News Source Add Now! Five things to know about Argentina's pivotal midterm election

Five things to know about Argentina's pivotal midterm election

Two years after a stunning election victory, Argentina's libertarian president, Javier Milei, faces a tough legislative election on Sunday. The results will determine whether Milei's budget-slashing cuts and attempts to deregulate the economy will survive. Jittery financial markets are watching very closely. Here are five things to know about the October 26 ballot, which will choose half of the country's 257 deputies and a third of its 72 senators. Who loses, wins? In 2023, Milei upended Argentina's political landscape, winning a landslide 56 percent of the presidential vote. However, his young party, Liberty Advances (La Libertad Avanza), did not fare as well, securing only 37 deputies and six senators. That has allowed a hostile Congress to repeatedly block his reforms, notably the privatisation of Aerolineas Argentinas, state-run energy firm YPF, nuclear power plants, and public media. Polls suggest Milei's party will almost certainly boost its current seat numbers, but an outright majority still seems out of reach. Securing a third of seats (up from 15 percent today) would allow him to veto hostile legislation. "That would be a good number," he says. Hope is gone Milei can tout some successes going into Sunday's vote. Inflation is down from 200 percent to 31 percent -- although it is likely to rise again, if the peso is allowed to devalue as markets expect. The budget is balanced for the first time in 14 years. But the reforms have come at a high price for many Argentines. Over 200,000 jobs have been lost, and the economy was in recession for much of 2024. "We're the same as two years ago, but worse," grumbles Hector Sanchez, a 62-year-old waiter. "The hope that was there is gone". Once a Milei voter, he is now undecided. "I'd like him to succeed, but I doubt he will." But he sees a lack of options: "The other side has nothing. And I don’t want to go back to before." The president's lustre has also been tarnished by corruption allegations that hit his inner circle. An economist close to Milei recently dropped out of the election over past ties to an alleged drug trafficker. Powerful friends With Milei under mounting pressure, ideological ally Donald Trump rushed to his rescue with a $40 billion financial and political bailout. Economists warn the largesse might be a "financial Vietnam" for the United States, requiring Washington to pump in good money after bad to prop up Milei and the peso. Argentines fear a peso devaluation or depreciation after the vote despite US intervention. And the opposition has made hay from Milei's ties with mistrusted gringos. "Orders now come from Washington... Trump is Milei's campaign manager," said Axel Kicillof, the governor of Buenos Aires province. A 'Lion' tamed? Ahead of the vote, Milei has looked to soften his image as a norm-smashing political warrior. Since a September regional election loss, there have been fewer insults toward opponents or journalists, more outreach to provincial governors, and a hint of empathy with references to "vulnerable" Argentines. The man who likes to call himself "the Lion" still wants to be edgy. He recently donned his rocker leather jacket for a surreal rally-concert aimed at pleasing his hardcore base. Will his newfound pragmatism continue after the vote? "Milei might strike temporary deals, push a less radical reform than he wanted, just to show he delivered," predicts Gabriel Vommaro, political scientist at Conicet. "But a full 'normalization' of Milei, or a broader coalition? I'm not sure he can, or even wants to," said Vommaro. Centrist challenge? Milei's party will run solo in some districts, and in others is allied with pro-business Republican Proposal -- not a governing partner but often a source of votes. Facing this "pro-Milei" bloc is the Peronist opposition, in power for 17 of the past 23 years. It is still regrouping from the shock of 2023. Former president Cristina Kirchner's star has faded -- she was convicted of corruption and ineligible to run again. Kicillof, the 54-year-old governor of Buenos Aires province, is gaining stature ahead of the 2027 presidential race. But both the Peronists and Milei face a new challenge in the form of a centrist federalist and province-based force that could have a solid showing. Source: AFP
