Porsche loses almost one billion euros on shift back to petrol

German sports car maker Porsche sunk to a third-quarter loss of almost one billion euros ($1.16 billion), the firm said Friday, as it grappled with the costs returning to petrol and delaying its electric vehicle (EV) rollout. Operating profit -- which strips out some costs such as tax -- fell to 40 million euros for the first nine months of the year. Porsche said in July it had made an operating profit of 1.0 billion euros since the start of the year, meaning it lost about 960 million euros in the months after. Finance chief Jochen Breckner said the results reflected the cost of Porsche reworking its product portfolio to shift back to petrol vehicles in the face of tepid EV demand. "This year's results reflect the impact of our strategic realignment," he said. "These measures are essential." Porsche in September said it would delay the introduction of some fully electric cars and extend the life of some combustion engine and hybrid models. Its parent company, the Volkswagen Group, booked a 5.1 billion euro hit to its profit for the year based on the costs of Porsche's product rejig as well as it cutting profit targets. Porsche has come under intense pressure from competitors in top market China and is particularly vulnerable to US President Donald Trump's tariffs as it has no manufacturing footprint in the United States. Championship chasers can't count on help at Martinsville

Time is scarce on the NASCAR Cup Series schedule, but that precious commodity is not the only thing drivers are finding in high demand these days. While softer tires, more grip and better balance will be required in the Round of 8 finale at Martinsville Speedway on Sunday afternoon, add "help" to the want list as well. Joey Logano and Ryan Blaney, owners of the past three championships while piloting Fords from the Team Penske stable, would agree that a little more help is necessary, especially after a frustrating finish at Talladega last weekend in the round's middle race of three. The pair of blue oval drivers had to take fuel in the final frantic circuits of the scheduled 188-lap event after Chris Buescher wrecked with three to go, putting the Penske pair in peril. That potential became perilous reality. They found themselves in a bad situation in their respective Mustang Dark Horse rides and were unable to move forward, trapped behind drivers -- some of them also with blue ovals on the front of the hood -- who were holding back RPMs to preserve fuel in the season's 34th race as it ultimately extended to 193 laps. Logano and Blaney were 16th and 23rd at the end, shaking up the standings of the eight drivers even more. Joe Gibbs Racing teammates Denny Hamlin and Talladega winner Chase Briscoe will race for a championship in Phoenix next weekend, while two more of the six title chasers will get in -- one with a victory and the other on points, or two on points if a non-playoff driver takes the checkers at the Virginia short track. JGR's Christopher Bell is 37 points to the good in third place, while 2021 champ Kyle Larson of Hendrick Motorsports is plus-36. William Byron (-36), Logano (-38), Blaney (-47) and Chase Elliott (-62) each need either a win or some type of racing Hail Mary to advance as part of the Championship 4. On his "Happy Hour" podcast Tuesday, 2014 champ Kevin Harvick said Logano and Blaney, who possess four titles between them, should not expect any help on Martinsville's half-mile bullring. "I think that everybody knows if they put them in a position to win, they're going to win," Harvick said. "And let's face it, they're not Dale Earnhardt Jr. or Dale Earnhardt Sr. People don't want to see them win. And don't want to be a part of their win. "When you get to a point of being dominant, the competitors want to put you in a bad spot. They got shuffled (at Talladega) and put themselves in the middle of the pack and that was it." Last season in this race, the teams of Austin Dillon, Ross Chastain and Bubba Wallace were fined for working to prevent a rival manufacturer from advancing -- basically not trying their 100 percent best to run as hard they could. That rule came about after Bristol in 2013 when Michael Waltrip Racing created a caution, and lost spots to help MWR driver Martin Truex Jr. move to the playoffs. NASCAR implemented strict rules then and even harsher ones after last season to prevent a repeat performance from happening, especially at this tight track on this critical weekend. One antonym for help is hinder. Do not be surprised if there are many more obstacles and drivers in the way than folks lending a helping hand at Martinsville.

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Friday announced that October 27 will be a government holiday on the occassion of Chhath festival, said a statement from the CMO.The chief minister explained that the holiday is being observed on Monday because the third day of this four-day festival is the most important one, it said.On this day, devotees offer prayers to the setting Sun at riversides or ponds. Preparations begin early in the morning, with families performing various rituals. Robert Kraft advances in Pro Football Hall of Fame contributor voting process

Patriots owner Robert Kraft moved one step closer towards being inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame as a contributor. The list of contributors was trimmed from 32 down to 21, and Kraft made the cut along with K.S. “Bud” Adams, Roone Arledge, Howard Cosell, John Facenda, Mike Giddings, Ralph Hay, Frank “Bucko” Kilroy, Don Klosterman, Eddie Kotal, Virginia McCaskey, John McVay, Clint Murchison, Art Rooney Jr., Clark Shaughnessy, Seymour Siwoff, Amy Trask, Jack Vainisi, Lloyd Wells, John Wooten and Buddy Young. The Patriots have won six Super Bowls and 10 AFC Championships since Kraft bought the team in 1994. Former Patriots head coach Bill Belichick also recently advanced in the coaching category for induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame when the list was trimmed from 15 to 12 individuals. Belichick has shown animosity toward the Patriots’ organization since being named the head coach of the University of North Carolina. Belichick banned Patriots scouts from attending UNC practices. It would add some awkwardness if Belichick and Kraft were inducted into the hall of fame together. Eight former Patriots players, including kicker Adam Vinatieri, defensive tackle Vince Wilfork, guard Logan Mankins, safety Rodney Harrison and cornerback Asante Samuel, advanced in the voting process from 128 players down to 52.

Social Security cost-of-living hike set at 2.8%

Retirees and other beneficiaries will see a 2.8% monthly bump in their Social Security benefits next year to reflect inflation. The Social Security Administration announced the annual cost-of-living adjustment today after the government shutdown delayed the release of September inflation data for the broader economy. The adjustment, known as the COLA, will be added in January to the benefits of 75 million Americans, a group that includes retirees and their spouses and survivors, as well as those who receive disability benefits and Supplemental Security Income. The average monthly benefit amount will increase by about $56. The maximum amount of earnings subject to the Social Security tax will rise to $184,500. For seniors, much of the increase will go toward health care costs. The health spending burden for people enrolled in Medicare is twice as large as that of other households, and it accounted for 13.6% of total spending in 2022, according to KFF, a health care research nonprofit. The dollar amount of the COLA varies according to one’s benefit level. That means the net increase in benefits will depend on how much Medicare’s Part B premium goes up, which is deducted from the Social Security benefits of most retirees and covers doctor visits and other outpatient care. The premium for 2026 has not yet been announced, but the latest annual report on Medicare’s finances from the program’s trustees projected that it would rise 11.6%, or $21.54, next year to $206.50 per month. If that forecast holds, the Part B increase alone will consume nearly half of the COLA awarded to the average beneficiary. For those who receive less Social Security, the Part B increase could significantly reduce any boost they would receive from the adjustment. The small inflation adjustment comes at a time when a majority of seniors are financially fragile. A recent study by the National Council on Aging, an advocacy group, found that 80% of Americans ages 60 and older would not have sufficient resources to handle a financial shock such as a divorce, a serious health problem or the need to pay for long-term care. The study also found a strong link between wealth and life span: The poorest Americans die, on average, nine years earlier than the wealthiest Americans. “The bottom line is that it’s getting harder and harder to age in America,” said Ramsey Alwin, the president and CEO of the National Council on Aging. Living costs and inflation rates vary considerably around the country, and that means a Social Security benefit goes further in some regions than in others. For example, single older adults in good health living in New York City would need an annual income of $30,936 to meet their basic needs (housing, food, health care and transportation), according to the Elder Index, which measures the typical cost of living for older people for every county in the United States. If that same person lived in Birmingham, Alabama, basic living expenses would total $21,576. Housing and health care costs account for much of the difference. Social Security replaces roughly 40% of preretirement wages for middle-income workers. Savings play a critical role in closing the gap between that benefit and a retiree’s actual expenses. A recent Vanguard study found that just 42% of Americans are on track to maintain their standard of living in retirement; workers with access to a workplace 401(k) plan are twice as likely to be financially ready for retirement. “Those who do have access appear to be on a stronger footing,” said Fiona Greig, the global head of investor research and policy at Vanguard. Cutting spending in retirement is another option, but it is available mainly to higher-income retirees, who can reduce discretionary spending on things like entertainment and travel, Greig said. “There’s a lot of extra costs that high-income people tend to shed in retirement compared with low-income people,” she said. “Lower income people don’t have much budget that they can cut.” The COLA formula uses one of the broadest government measures of consumer prices, the consumer price index for urban wage earners and clerical workers, which reflects price changes for a group of goods and services bought by working people. The index’s numbers for July, August and September are averaged to produce the COLA. The COLA for 2026 is roughly in line with those awarded for the past two years, after two years of very large increases during and after the pandemic, when inflation rates were high. The Social Security Administration will notify recipients about their new benefit amounts by mail and online starting in early December. The National Council on Aging offers an online benefits checkup that can be used to search for assistance with the cost of health care, food, housing and utilities. Kim Kardashian reveals she was diagnosed with brain aneurysm

Kim Kardashian got candid about a recent health scare, revealing on the season 7 premiere of “The Kardashians” that she’d been diagnosed with a brain aneurysm. The SKIMS founder fought back tears while talking about the diagnosis in a trailer that played at the beginning of Thursday’s season opener. In the clip, the 45-year-old can be seen lying in an MRI machine and later telling her family the scan found “a little aneurysm.” According to the Mayo Clinic, a brain aneurysm is “a bulge or ballooning in a blood vessel in the brain.” Though most aren’t serious, especially if they’re small, the condition can become life-threatening if an aneurysm ruptures, causing bleeding in the brain. Kardashian went on to tell her family that her doctor blamed the aneurysm on stress. Elsewhere in the premiere, she admitted that a lot of her stress comes from her ex-husband, Kanye West, with whom she shares four kids between the ages of 6 and 12. “I feel more stressed probably just because I have to protect my kids,” she said. “Everyone around can handle (the drama), but I want to protect my babies.” She noted that for years she’s been “able to hide” her ex-husband’s controversies and public outbursts from their kids, but it’s getting harder to do so as they get older. Kardashian later said her relationship with West feels like “a little bit of Stockholm syndrome.” “I always felt really bad and always wanted to help,” she explained. “(People think) I should have stuck it out and I could have helped. … (But) as much as people think that I have the luxury of walking away and not dealing ever again, that’s not my reality. This person — we have four kids together.” Kardashian also partly blamed her ongoing psoriasis flare-ups to the stress of co-parenting with West. “I haven’t had psoriasis since my divorce (in 2021), but it’s starting to come back,” Kardashian told a producer while looking at the red rashes on her legs. “It always flares up whenever I start feeling stressed.” Still, the mother of four said she isn’t looking for an apology from her ex and just wants to find peace no matter how he behaves. “I’m not looking for it,” she explained. “I don’t care. Is it sad, it’s so f—ing sad. But I can’t stress too much about that. I have to worry about other things.”

الشروط التي تتطلبها جهود بناء الثقة حالة شبابنا اليوم بمسرحية مرت علي في حياتي الدراسية، وهي مسرحية “ Look Back in Anger – انظر خلفك في غضب”، من تأليف الكاتب البريطاني “جون أوزبورن- John Osborne، والتي عُرضت لأول مرة سنة 1956 في لندن. وفي محاولة لإعطاء فكرة عامة عن هذه المسرحية، تُعدّ المسرحية من أبرز الأعمال التي دَشَّنتْ لما يُعرف بحركة “الشباب الغاضب-“Angry Young Men في الأدب البريطاني بعد الحرب العالمية الثانية. بطل المسرحية جيمي بورتر (Jimmy Porter) الشاب المثقف والغاضب، ينتمي إلى الطبقة العاملة، ومتزوج من أليسون (Alison) التي تنتمي إلى الطبقة الوسطى المحافظة. ويمثل الصراع الطبقي أحد الموضوعات الرئيسية فيها، حيث يشعر جيمي بالاستياء من النظام الطبقي الذي يُهمّش أبناء طبقته. ونتيجة للاغتراب والغضب الاجتماعي يعكس جيمي إحباط جيل كامل من شباب ما بعد الحرب العالمية الثانية. العلاقات العاطفية الممزقة بينه وبين زوجته أليسون مليئة بالصراع، وتعكس فقدان التواصل. ومن بين موضوعات هذه المسرحية أيضًا التمرد على القيم التقليدية، وبالتالي تهاجم المسرحية القيم التي كانت سائدة حينها في المجتمع البريطاني. أما عن أسلوب المسرحية فهي واقعية، وتدور أحداثها في حيز ضيق، وتعتمد على الحوار الطويل والمكثّف، والانفعالات الحادة التي تُظهر الغضب والخيبة بصدق غير مسبوق في المسرح البريطاني آنذاك. ما ذكَّرني بهذه المسرحية في هذا المقام هو ما نشاهده من تمرد الشباب الإرتري في المهجر على ما سبقتهم من نضالات، ومن سبقوهم في العمر والتجربة والتاريخ، ويتم التعبير عن هذا التمرد والغضب عن طريق ازدراء رموزه والسخرية منهم. كم من شباب وطنيين وغيورين صادفتهم في هذه الحركات الشبابية يعبرون عن أنفسهم بصورة غاضبة وغير متوازنة، الأمر الذي يُنفِّر عنهم أصحاب التجارب، لأنهم يخشون من أن يتعرضوا إلى الإساءات، رغم كل ما قدمه هؤلاء في حياتهم من نضالات وتضحيات، يبتعدون عنهم بغية السلامة. هذه واحدة من نكساتنا كإرتريين عندما نرى كيف انعدمت الثقة على كافة المستويات، السياسية، والاجتماعية، والثقافية، والدينية، وبين الأجيال، وهذه بحق كارثة الكوارث. أتمنى أن يكون هذا مجرد إحساس شخصي مني، ويخالفني فيه الآخرون الرأي ويرون أن الوضع ليس بهذا السوء. ما دفعني لتذكُّرِ المسرحية والاستشهاد بها هنا هو للتعريف بأن كل الشعوب، وعند مرورها بأزمات وصدمات كبرى تفقد توازنها، وتتخبط في بحثها عن المخارج، وتخوض في الكثير من المحاولات والتجارب الخاطئة، حتى تهتدي أخيرًا إلى طرق وتفاهمات تعيد إليها توازنها، ونحن كإرتريين أحس بحق بأننا نمر الآن بمثل هذه الحالة. أما ما دفعني لكتابة هذا المقال هو وجود مقالين سبقا كتابتي لهذا المقال، وكاتباه هما أخوان عزيزان تابعت كتاباتهما من قبل، وهما الإخوة الدكتور عبد الرازق كرار، والأستاذ بيان نجاش، بالإضافة إلى ندوة قدمها الدكتور صلاح نور في منصة حوار لوعي مشترك، وكانت الورقتان والندوة تدور حول أزماتنا من ضبابية في تعريف مشكلاتنا، إلى مسألة انعدام الثقة بين مكوناتنا الاجتماعية، وغيرها من الهموم. تعتبر الثقة أساسًا لأي تعافٍ وطني، وتحقيق أي تقدم أيًّا كان نوعه، والاعتراف بالتضحيات المشتركة التي قُدِّمتْ خلال فترة الكفاح المسلح الذي دام 30 عامًا، تعتبر الرصيد المشترك الذي يمكن البناء عليه لإعادة بناء الثقة من جديد إن أحسنا التصرف. كما أنه يجب على الإرتريين الإقرار بأن الانقسامات بكافة أنواعها الدينية منها والإقليمية والسياسية حقيقية، ومتجذرة تاريخيًّا، ولا يمكن إنكار وجودها بأي حال من الأحوال، إلا أنها ليست عصية على الحل. وإذا حاولنا النظر إلى المصادر التاريخية للانقسامات التي نعاني منها نحن الإرتريون، يمكن الحديث عن الإرث الاستعماري الذي كان مبنيًّا على استراتيجية “فرّق تسد”. فالإيطاليون على سبيل المثال حافظوا على العلاقات الهرمية والطبقية، وأداروا المجتمع الإرتري بشكل فوقي، ولم يحاولوا أبدًا أن يقتربوا منه ويُعَلِّموه، حتى من منظور فائدتهم الاستعمارية التي كان من الممكن أن تُطيل أمد سيطرتهم علينا حتى بعد خروجهم، كما فعل نظراؤهم البريطانيون والفرنسيون الذين ربطوا مستعمراتهم بهم، حيث نجد أن أقصى ما يطمح إليه المُستعمَر هو أن يكون مثل سيده، فيتفانى لدخول أكبر مؤسساته التعليمية التي ظلت مفتوحة بشكل مسيطر عليه للغاية، لإنتاج متعلمين يتنافسون في خدمة المُستعمِر السابق. وبحكم قصر مدتهم في إرتريا لم يُتَح للبريطانيين ممارسة تأثيرهم البعيد المدى الذي نجده في أغلب مستعمراتهم السابقة كالسودان وغيره، إلا أنهم وفي المدة القصيرة التي أداروا فيها إرتريا قاموا بالتلاعب بالهويات العرقية والدينية. هناك حقائق لا يمكن إنكارها أن التعليم أخذ المظالم على الذات الجماعية للإرتريين. وفي هذا السياق هناك تهم توجه للإرتريين، خاصة من جيرانهم الجنوبيين، والأدهى أن بعض الإرتريين، بحسن نية أم لغيرها من الأسباب، أصبحوا أيضًا يرددونها، وهي أن إرتريا صنيعة المُستعمِر، وكأنه ليس لدى الإرتريين تاريخ، وتراث، وثقافة يفخرون به. والأدهى من ذلك والأمر أنه بنيت على مثل هذه المقولات قناعات سياسية، وأصبحت في بعض الأحيان مسبة يخجل منها البعض، على الرغم من أن كثيرًا مما يتردد في هذا السياق ينطبق أيضًا على غيرنا من الشعوب المستعمرة، وإرتريا ليست استثناءً في هذا المضمار سلبًا أم إيجابًا. أما عن حقبة النظام الاستبدادي في إرتريا، فهذه العقود الثلاثة من الديكتاتورية عمّقت انعدام الثقة بين المكونات، وعطلت الحوار بين المكونات الإرترية أفرادًا وجماعات، وقوّضت التكاتف الذي حققه الإرتريون خلال حرب التحرير. أما عن الدور الذي لعبه النظام الحالي في فقدان الثقة وضياعها، يمكن القول إنه هدم الثقة التي بُنيت في الخنادق خلال فترة الكفاح المسلح. فالمسلمون والمسيحيون، وسكان المرتفعات والسهول، والرجال والنساء، قاتلوا معًا. أما واقعنا الحالي في ظل هذا النظام يتميز بحالة من التشرذم والشك واستقطاب الإرتريين في الشتات على أسس لا تشكل فيها الهوية الوطنية بديلًا جذابًا. وهنا يجب بذل جهود حقيقة لتذكير الإرتريين بأن التلاحم الذي ظهر بينهم إبان فترة الكفاح المسلح لم يُمنح لهم هبة من أحد، بل بُني من خلال النضال المشترك، ويمكن إعادة بنائه من جديد إن أحسنا التصرف. وبالنسبة لأهمية الثقة، فبدونها يستحيل تحقيق وحدة الوطن والمواطن، وتحقيق الديمقراطية، والتنمية المستدامة، فالثقة هي الترياق لحالات الخوف والشك والتشرذم التي يعاني منها الإرتريون، وهناك خطورة من أن ترث الأجيال القادمة الكثير من الصدمات والانقسامات، إذا لم تبدأ عملية التعافي منها الآن. أما بالنسبة لمسارات بناء الثقة تبدأ بالاعتراف بحقيقة أن التجزئة هي السائدة على كافة المستويات، وأن بناء الثقة أمر صعب في واقعنا الحالي، ولا يمكن أن يتأتى إلا عبر حوار صادق يتناول الجراحات التاريخية دون مواربة. من أهمها خلق مساحات لسرد القصص والتجارب، والاستماع إليها باهتمام، والاعتراف بالمظالم دون إصدار أحكام، وبهذه الطريقة يمكننا بناء سردية مشتركة، لأن السردية المشتركة تعتبر بالغة الأهمية لبناء الأوطان. والسردية المشتركة من شأنها أن توحد القيم الوطنية، وتعزز القسمات المشتركة في الهوية الوطنية التي يستحيل بدونها أن نوجد قيمًا مشتركة توحدنا، وحتى لو عجزت هذه الجهود عن تحقيق المعجزات في توحيدنا، فعلى الأقل، وعبر الحوارات الواعية والهادفة يتم تقريب المسافات بيننا، بناءً على التاريخ النضالي المشترك. كما أن السردية المشتركة تُعِين على إعادة تعريف الهوية الإرترية ليس على أساس المنطقة أو الدين، بل من خلال القيم الإنسانية المشتركة، وقدرتها على الصمود عند تعرضها للصدمات، وهي (أي الصدمات) متكررة في تاريخنا، فكلما اعتقدنا أننا قطعنا شوطًا في هذا الطريق، أي إيجاد السردية المشتركة، نكتشف بأننا قطعنا المسافات في خيالنا وتصوراتنا وليس على أرض الواقع، وأننا ما زلنا في الكثير من الأحايين نراوح مكاننا. نحن بحاجة إلى إيجاد منصات تشجع على الحوارات العابرة لانقساماتنا المتمثلة في الشتات مقابل الداخل، والشباب مقابل كبار السن، والفصائل السياسية مقابل المنظمات المدنية، وأهمية تعزيز الحوارات فيما بينها لإيجاد القواسم المشتركة، واعتبار تنوعنا مصدرًا من مصادر قوتنا، وليس مهددًا للهوية المشتركة. ومن بين الوسائل المساعدة لهذه الجهود معالجة أخطاء الماضي بروح تصالحية، وليس انتقامية، والتعود على المحاسبة كثقافة وممارسة، والابتعاد قدر المستطاع عن رمي الأفراد والجماعات بالتهم جزافًا (اللوم الجماعي). بناء الثقة لا يمكن أن يتحقق إلا إذا كانت هناك مؤسسات ترعاه وتُنَمِّيه، من بينها إنشاء هياكل مدنية شفافة وتشاركية مثل المجالس المحلية، والمبادرات المجتمعية، وهذا يعزز دور ومكانة المنظمات الأهلية التي ترمم التصدعات والانقسامات في حال حدوثها كالحركات الدينية، والثقافية، والنسائية، والشبابية. وبالنسبة لإرتريي المهجر ينبغي أن يكونوا بناة جسور، لا مجرد صدى للانقسامات القاتلة التي نعاني منها في الداخل والخارج، واستخدام منصاتهم لفتح مسارات متقدمة للحوار تتجاوز حالة الانقسام، قبل أن تتفاقم أكثر مما هي عليه اليوم. وبالنسبة للخطوات العملية للمضي قدمًا: أهمية القيام بمبادرات بناء الثقة في Conditions Required for Trust-Building Efforts The state of our youth today reminds me of a play I came across during my time as a student: Look Back in Anger, by British writer John Osborne, which premiered in London in 1956. To give a general overview of this play, it is considered one of the most prominent works that launched the so-called “Angry Young Men” movement in post-World War II British literature. The play’s protagonist, Jimmy Porter, is an educated and angry young man from the working class, married to Alison, a woman from the conservative middle class. Class conflict is one of the play’s main themes, as Jimmy is resentful of the class system that marginalizes members of his class. As a result of alienation and social anger, Jimmy reflects the frustration of an entire generation of post-World War II youth. The fractured romantic relationship between him and his wife, Alison, is fraught with conflict and reflects a loss of connection. Another theme of this play is rebellion against traditional values, and thus the play attacks the values ​​prevalent in British society at the time. The play’s style is realistic, set within a confined space, and relies on long, intense dialogue, and intense emotions that express anger and disappointment with an honesty unprecedented in British theater at the time. What reminded me of this play in this context is the rebellion of Eritrean youth in the diaspora against the struggles that preceded them, and those who preceded them in age, experience, and history. This rebellion and anger of the youth are expressed through contempt and ridicule for their seniors. Many patriotic and zealous young people I have encountered in these youth movements express themselves in an angry and unbalanced manner, which alienates those with experience. They fear being insulted by the youth, despite all the struggles and sacrifices those seniors have made in their lives, therefore they distance themselves from them for safety. This is one of our setbacks as Eritreans when we see how trust has eroded at all levels: political, social, cultural, religious, and intergenerational. This is truly a disaster. I hope this is just a personal feeling, and I wish that others disagree with me and believe the situation isn’t that bad. What prompted me to remember the play and cite it here is to highlight that all peoples, when they experience major crises and trauma, lose their balance, stumble in their search for a way out, and engage in many attempts and wrong experiments until they finally find ways and understandings that restore their balance. As Eritreans, I truly feel that we are currently experiencing such a situation. What prompted me to write this article is the existence of two articles that preceded this one, written by two dear brothers whose writings I have followed before: Dr. Abdul Raziq Karrar and Ustath Beyan Negash, in addition to a seminar presented by Dr. Salah Nour on the “Dialogue for Common Awareness” platform. Both the articles and the seminar revolved around our crises, from the vagueness in defining our problems to the lack of trust between our social components, among other concerns. Trust is the foundation of any national recovery, achieving any kind of progress, and recognizing shared sacrifices. The shared values ​​nurtured during the 30-year of armed struggle represent a common asset upon which to build trust, if we act wisely. Eritreans must also recognize that divisions of all kinds—religious, regional, and political—are real, historically rooted, and undeniable, but they are not insoluble. If we attempt to examine the historical sources of divisions that we Eritreans suffer from, we can talk about a colonial legacy based on a “divide and rule” strategy. The Italians, for example, maintained hierarchical and class relations and administered Eritrean society from a top-down perspective. They never attempted to approach or educate Eritreans, even from the perspective of their colonial advantage, which could have prolonged their control over us even after their departure, as it was the case with their British and French counterparts, who tied their colonies to them, as the ultimate aspiration of the colonized becomes to be like their master, dedicating themselves to entering their foremost educational institutions, which remained open in a highly controlled manner, producing educated people who would compete in the service of the former colonizer. Due to the short duration of their rule in Eritrea, the British were not able to exercise the far-reaching influence found in most of their former colonies, such as Sudan and others. However, during the short period in which they administered Eritrea, they manipulated our ethnic and religious diversity. There are undeniable facts that education took its first leap during the British era, and that political awareness grew. However, the political motives behind this are controversial, so it’s best not to delve into them due to the varying assessments. Emperor Haile Selassie’s policies were based on dividing Eritreans through religious and regional polarization, and his constant denial of the existence of a distinct Eritrean identity. This is a theme Ethiopians continue to build on to this day, and they revisit it whenever the conflict between them and Eritreans intensifies, even after Eritrea’s independence. The most prominent feature of Emperor Haile Selassie’s era was the geopolitical interventions that occurred during his reign in Eritrea, and the American and Israeli roles in maintaining Ethiopia’s control over Eritrea during this period are well-known. Therefore, after the desired political change in the country occurs, Eritreans should carefully study the damages they suffered throughout the colonial era, to demand material and moral compensation, and to recover the wealth that was plundered, some of which is known, and most of which is unknown. Most important in this regard is understanding the extent of the injustice and damage they suffered, so that they can have a realistic picture of the injustices they suffered and how these injustices have affected the collective self image of Eritreans. In this context, there are accusations directed at Eritreans, especially by their southern neighbours. What’s truly unfortunate is, some Eritreans, whether in good faith or for other reasons, have also begun to repeat these accusations: that Eritrea is a creation of the colonizer, as if Eritreans have no history, heritage, or culture of which to be proud. What’s even more shocking and bitter is that we find political convictions that are based on such statements. Even though much of what is said in this context also applies to other colonized peoples, and Eritrea is not exception in this regard, whether positively or negatively. As for the era of the authoritarian regime in Eritrea, more than three decades of dictatorship deepened the lack of trust among communities, disrupted dialogue between Eritrean groups and individuals, and undermined the solidarity achieved by Eritreans during the liberation war. As for the role played by the current regime in the loss of trust among Eritreans, it has destroyed the trust built in the trenches during the armed struggle. Muslims and Christians, highlanders and lowlanders, men and women, fought together. Our current reality under this regime is characterized by fragmentation, suspicion, and the polarization of Eritreans in the diaspora, in which national identity is not any more an attractive alternative. Here, genuine efforts must be made to remind Eritreans that the cohesion that emerged among them during the armed struggle was not granted to them by anyone, but was built through joint struggle and can be rebuilt anew if we act wisely. As for the importance of trust, without it, it is impossible to achieve national unity, democracy, and sustainable development. Trust is the antidote to fear, suspicion, and fragmentation that Eritreans suffer from. There is a danger that future generations will inherit many of the traumas and divisions if the recovery process does not begin now. As for the paths to building trust, it begins by recognizing the fact that fragmentation prevails at all levels, and that building trust is difficult in our current reality and can only be achieved through honest dialogue that addresses historical wounds without equivocation. The most important of these paths is creating spaces for sharing stories and experiences, listening attentively, and acknowledging grievances without passing judgments. In this way, we can build a shared narrative, because a shared narrative is crucial to nation-building. A shared narrative can unify national values ​​and reinforce the common features of our national identity, without which it is impossible to create shared values ​​that unite us. Even if these efforts fail to achieve miracles in uniting us, at the very least, through conscious and purposeful dialogues, we can bridge the gaps between us, building on our shared history of struggle. A shared narrative also helps redefine Eritrean identity not based on region or religion, but rather on shared human values ​​and our ability to withstand shocks, which are recurring in our history. Every time we think we have made progress on this path — that is, creating a shared narrative — we discover that we have only covered these distances in our imaginations and perceptions, not in reality, and that we are often stuck in the same place. We need to create platforms that encourage dialogue across our divisions—diaspora versus home, youth versus elders, political organizations versus civil society organizations—and emphasize the importance of fostering dialogue among them to find common ground and view our diversity as a source of strength, not a threat to our shared identity. Among the means to support these efforts is addressing past wrongs in a spirit of reconciliation, not revenge, adopting accountability as a culture and practice, and avoiding, as much as possible, the reckless accusations of collective blame against individuals and groups. Building trust can only be achieved if there are institutions that foster and nurture it, including the establishment of transparent and participatory civil structures such as local councils and community initiatives. This strengthens the role and position of civil society organizations that repair rifts and divisions when they arise, such as religious, cultural, women’s and youth movements. Eritreans in the diaspora should be bridge builders, not simply echo the deadly divisions we suffer at home and abroad. They should use their platforms to open advanced paths for dialogue that transcend the state of division before it worsens further than it is today. Concerning practical steps forward: The importance of undertaking limited confidence-building initiatives (community dialogues, joint projects, cultural exchanges). Encouraging cooperation between religious and regional communities, sometimes even across these communities. Education and awareness-raising that highlights the virtues of Eritrean pluralism and the shared sacrifices Eritreans made together to liberate their country. Using arts, literature, and written and even oral history telling to remind Eritreans of their shared sacrifices during the struggle. Conclusion: Building trust is not an easy task or quick solution; it is a task that takes place across generations.
