Sheffield Wednesday fans flock back to Hillsborough for first match since entering administration... as scoreboard operator pokes fun at hated owner Dejphon Chansiri

Sheffield Wednesday poked fun at hated owner Dejphon Chansiri in their first match since entering administration on Saturday. The club's players showed their appreciation to their fans on Saturday afternoon after their returned to Hillsborough in their numbers. 27,261 fans attended in total. Wednesday entered administration on Friday in a move that will be a hammer blow to their chances of avoiding relegation to League One - but finally opened the door to a future away from Chansiri. Daily Mail Sport understands some staff at the Championship crisis club were left in tears after being informed of the development in a meeting at the Middlewood Road training ground on Friday morning. The EFL confirmed an automatic 12-point penalty will be imposed on Henrik Pedersen's threadbare squad, which was already rock bottom in the table with six points from 11 games ahead of Saturday's clash against Oxford at Hillsborough. Before the game, a message was displayed on the big screens inside the ground. It first read: 'Rebooting...' before changing to: 'Removal successfully completed. Contacting administrator to begin recovery...' While the sporting prospects are bleak in the immediate future, the move is sure to hasten the departure of Chansiri after a decade at the club. Begbies Traynor, Sheffield-based specialists in the recovery of companies, has been appointed the administrators. And fans showed their support for the crisis club on Saturday, as they returned to their home stadium after opting to stay away in protest against Chansiri's ownership of the club. Wednesday were facing an Oxford United side who are also battling relegation, but were second best as they trailed 2-0 at half time, before Sean Fusire pulled one back at the start of the second period. The players, led by captain Barry Bannan, made an effort to head over to the home fans before the game to give their thanks after releasing a statement asking for their return on Friday. The letter read: 'To all fans of our club. We, the players, want to say directly to you, our supporters, how much we appreciate the lengths you have gone to, to protect this great club that we all love so much. 'Whilst we fully understand your stance and the measures you have took to force change, as a group, not having you in the ground has been felt by all of us.' It added: 'So we ask you, starting tomorrow against Oxford, please come back to Hillsborough and cheer the team on. Let's make the ground a place for teams to fear as we do everything we can to get the points we are going to so desperately need. Fans' minds are not on football right now - with the team seemingly spiraling towards relegation - but the survival of the club. Daily Mail Sport exclusively revealed last week that the club was facing a winding-up order over an unpaid tax bill, which is close to £1m and thought to relate to PAYE and VAT. Wednesday, who have paid wages late in five of the past seven months, are currently under five embargoes with the EFL.

Mechanism to monitor buses on All-India tourist permits on the cards: Ponnam

A mechanism to monitor long-distance buses operating on All-India tourist permits would be proposed at the inter-State transport commissioners’ meeting. On Saturday, Transport Minister Ponnam Prabhakar said, “Buses registered in other States use All-India tourist permits to travel across the country. These are legally valid, of course. However, we have to develop a system to monitor these buses from the perspective of passenger safety. This will be discussed in a meeting that will be held in about 15 days.” Mr. Prabhakar added that private bus operators tend to register buses in other States to save on taxes. While they avail benefits of low tax rates, upholding road safety standards and safety of passengers aboard buses should be non-negotiable. He underscored that while it is the Union Government, which is a stakeholder in framing policies connected to road transport, States do not have as many powers. “When we try to bring about strict enforcement, they [private bus operators] scream harassment, or go to court. Now we will have to strictly check all aspects of documentation and conduct a review,” he said. In the meanwhile, the Transport Department embarked on a drive on long-distance buses plying on contract carriage routes. Inspectors and other officials began to check for documentation and permits, as well as safety measures aboard buses. According to official data, the Road Transport Authority in its Hyderabad Central, Hyderabad North, Hyderabad East, Hyderabad West and Hyderabad South Zone, and the Ranga Reddy and Medchal districts till Saturday booked 68 cases. They collected a total of ₹1,17,000 as compounding fee for alleged violations such as not having fire safety equipment, such as fire extinguishers, aboard buses. Fines we imposed for modifications to buses that violated seating permits. A bus with a seating capacity of 23 was found to have altered its capacity to 29. Similarly, across the State, from January 1, as many as 877 buses were seized and 8,848 cases were booked.

Powerloom weavers see a jump in demand for grey fabric from African countries

The festival season was unexpectedly a boom this year for powerloom weavers at Somanur, Thekkalur, Avinashi and parts of Palladam in Tiruppur and Coimbatore districts. They are seeing higher wages and increasing demand for fabric after more than six years. “The demand for fabrics woven on normal powerlooms was high before 2014 as there was a good demand from African countries. The government also gave incentives for exports to the African countries. After that these export orders declined. Now, master weavers are giving 20 to 25 paise more to the job workers and looms are not available as the demand from Africa has revived. The demand is mainly for 50 inch wide fabrics woven from 20s count cotton yarn,” says E. Bhoopathi, president of the Coimbatore District Jobworking Powerloom Weavers’ Association. K. Sakthivel, president of the Powerloom Development and Export Promotion Council, says demand from Africa declined for a few years mainly because of currency issues in some of the African countries. The African market switches between Chinese and Indian exporters and this time, the demand is more from India. When the demand moves to China, there is about 20% drop in demand from India. When India gets the African market, it sees a 20% jump in exports. China is not focusing on textiles now and hence, the African orders have improved for Indian suppliers. The demand is for a specific variety of fabric – those woven in regular powerlooms and not the automatic looms. The market in Africa is also into fashion and there are more than 50 multi-colour designs that are printed and sold to African buyers. Earlier, it used to be less than half a dozen designs in two or three colours. However, the weavers should also be careful, he cautions. The number of powerlooms in Tamil Nadu that used to weave for the African market used to be about 35,000 earlier. Now, it is just about 25,000. Weavers are getting better wages now. But, they should not switch over completely to the variety in demand for Africa. There should be cautious increase of capacity and the weavers should maintain a balance of the markets they cater to, he said. G. Arulmozhi, president of the Openend Spinning Mills’ Association, said there is a good demand for 20, 25 and 30 count yarns from the weavers. The mills are getting only nominal price for the yarn but the demand is huge and several mills that were earlier catering to Tiruppur and Karur markets have now switched over to the varieties in demand. Most of the openend mills are operating full capacity because of the African exports, he said. Mr. Sakthivel added that the Tamil Nadu government should support the weavers set up a finishing unit in the State. “If we have a finishing facility, ₹1,500 crore worth exports can move to Tamil Nadu from the western States. We are currently supplying the fabric to exporters in Maharashtra or Gujarat,” he said.

Tom Lockyer completes emotional return to football almost TWO years after suffering a cardiac arrest - as he makes his first start for Bristol Rovers

Tom Lockyer has made his emotional return to football at Bristol Rovers, 22 months after suffering a cardiac arrest on the pitch during a Premier League match. Lockyer, 30, was named in the starting lineup against Crawley Town on Saturday afternoon and received a warm reception at Broadfield Stadium as he completed his football comeback. Former Luton Town captain Lockyer collapsed on the pitch after suffering a cardiac arrest during the Hatters' away trip to Bournemouth on December 16, 2023 and needed medical intervention in order to save his life. Lockyer, who was 29 at the time, described in the aftermath how he 'literally died', with his heart stopping for two minutes and 41 seconds during the harrowing incident. Despite facing an uncertain future in football, the defender has since been fitted with an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) to regulate his abnormal heart rhythm. After being released by Luton in the summer — and told he could continue to use the club's facilities as he continued his rehabilitation — the 30-year-old star joined Bristol Rovers as a free agent on Thursday, returning after making over 250 appearances there at the start of his career. Lockyer was thrown straight into Rovers' starting XI for Saturday's League Two clash against Crawley, just two days after sealing his return to the club. 'It feels really, really good to once again be a Bristol Rovers player,' he said upon signing his new deal. 'Obviously I've been training here for a while and I've tried not to think too much about it or get too excited about the ifs, buts and maybes. 'But as soon as I knew that Darrell [Clarke, Bristol Rovers head coach] wanted to get something done, it was easy for me to then make a decision about coming back home. 'It is so hard to explain but it's everything I've worked so hard for over the last two years. 'Hopefully I can have many, many more good memories in a football shirt. 'I wouldn't be doing this otherwise. I'm doing this because I love playing football and I've got that massive desire to play football again, and what better place to do that than back home at Bristol Rovers.' The match between Bournemouth and Luton was abandoned as a result of Lockyer's worrying cardiac arrest. Former Luton manager Rob Edwards immediately ran on to the pitch after Lockyer collapsed to the turf, while both sets of players appeared visibly distressed as paramedics and medical staff attended to the footballer. Lockyer's emotional return comes after a tricky recovery period for defender, who was due to return for Luton's Under-21 side last December, only to damage his ankle ligaments and undergo multiple operations. Lockyer became a father in March last year, three months after suffering the cardiac arrest, and has since spoken about how his daughter gave him a new perspective on life. 'I'm so lucky to still be here and in her life,' he said. 'When I hold her now, it's just amazing. The feeling and love you have for your child is incredibly strong and mine is even stronger now. 'I am just so thankful I am here to see her grow, see her change, smile and you know, be sick on me. I just love it. I am incredibly fortunate. I can't stress that enough.

England 6-26 Australia: Kangaroos triumph in first Rugby League Ashes match since 2003

Twenty-two years later, same story. Australia picked up where they left off in their domination of the rugby league Ashes. After a tense opening 20 minutes of the first series since 2003, the Kangaroos opened the scoring against England with their first flowing move of the contest. Debutant Mark Nawaqanitawase shifted the ball left for rampaging full-back Reece Walsh to go over in style. England were unhappy as scrum-half Mikey Lewis appeared to be tripped in the build-up, and there looked to be a forward pass too - but the try was given following a review by video referee Jack Smith. Smith partly redeemed himself to the Wembley crowd by disallowing a second Australia try before the break as Dom Young was taken out by Josh Addo-Carr as he jumped to catch a high kick. Shaun Wane's side initially responded well to conceding and defence-splitting grubber kicks from George Williams and Tom Johnstone had the green and gold defence on their heels. But Cleary added a penalty with the last action of the first half to put Australia 8-0 up - and they extended the lead straight after the interval. After putting the hosts under constant pressure from the restart, Angus Crichton strode through to score with full-back Jack Welsby too deep and allowing him to go through far too easily. Australia kept England at arm's length thereafter, easing their way to victory in the first meeting between the sides since the 2017 World Cup final. That success was secured with 15 minutes remaining as second row Crichton scythed through the defence again, and more gloss was added when a superb field-length move down the left was finished by the impressive Walsh. Daryl Clark barged over in the final minutes for England, but it was no more than a consolation. A downside for the visitors was that captain Issah Yeo was forced off in the first half after failing a head injury assessment following a clash with Young. He will also miss the second test next week at Hill Dickinson Stadium in Liverpool. More to follow.

'Will Tear Waqf Law If Tejashwi Becomes CM': RJD Leader's Claim Draws BJP's Wrath

A fresh political controversy has erupted in Bihar with less than two weeks to go for the high-stakes Assembly elections in Bihar, as a leader of the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) said Tejashwi Yadav will scrap the Waqf Amendment Act in the state after becoming the Chief Minister. A video went viral on social media, showing RJD leader Qari Sohaib addressing a campaign rally in Khagaria. “I appeal to all sections of the society, forget about everything, don’t come under anyone’s influence… people who passed the Waqf bill need to be treated,” he said. “To save Bihar and our country, defeat NDA, and vote for the Mahagathbandhan government. Once Tejashwi Yadav becomes the Chief Minister, all such bills will be torn and thrown away, be it the Waqf bill or any other bill,” he added. Vote for RJD and make Tejashwi bhai CM of Bihar. He will give proper treatment to all who are against us. People who brought bills like Waqf will be treated properly and these bills scraped. Their Intentions are clear!! pic.twitter.com/brUhVBvzgV — Megh Updates ?™ (@MeghUpdates) October 25, 2025 BJP’s ‘Jungle Raj’ Response The RJD leader’s comments drew a sharp response from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which accused the RJD of backing land mafias and seeking the return of Lalu Yadav’s ‘jungle raj’. “From the RJD platform, an announcement — if Tejashwi Yadav becomes the Chief Minister, they will end the Waqf law. The law will remain, but the intention to loot the lands is clear. This is exactly what RJD’s jungle raj is,” said BJP IT department in-charge Amit Malviya. pic.twitter.com/5SNWkAeru1 — Amit Malviya (@amitmalviya) October 25, 2025 “RJD leader using official RJD platform to threaten & tear apart laws made by Parliament & upheld by SC. Tearing a printout/ photocopy of the Act will make no difference, except expose their hooligan character. Waqf Amendment Act is irrevocable,” said another spokesperson, Tuhin Sinha. What Is The Waqf Law? The Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2024, was passed in the Budget Session 2025 – from January 31 to April 4 – after a 12-hour debate in both Houses of the Parliament. The bill was cleared by the Lok Sabha with the support of 288 members, while 232 MPs were against it. The Rajya Sabha saw 128 members voting in its favour and 95 against it. The Act aims to modify the Waqf Act 1995 and to address the challenges in the regulation and oversight of waqf properties. Opposition alleged it was aimed at weakening Muslim institutions, while the government called it a transparency reform. Last month, the Supreme Court refused to stall the operation of the Waqf Amendment Act, 2025, in its entirety, noting that “presumption is always in favour of the constitutionality of the law, only in the rarest of rare cases are laws stayed”, but halted some provisions of the Act. Staying the requirement of a person to be a practising Muslim for five years, the court said it would be on hold till the government makes rules and comes up with a mechanism to avoid it becoming an arbitrary provision. The court also observed that permitting the Collector to determine rights of property was against the concept of separation of powers.

If Harshit can contribute 20-25 runs, No.8 could be good slot for him: Shubman

Sydney, Oct 25 (PTI) If Harshit Rana keeps contributing 20 to 25 runs with the bat, he could well be the bowling all-rounder that India are looking for at No. 8, said skipper Shubman Gill after the Delhi speedster had a career-best haul of 4 wickets in the third ODI against Australia here on Saturday. While Nitish Kumar Reddy was out with quadriceps injury, his bowling lacks the required bite compared to Hardik Pandya and his inclusion as a batting all-rounder at No. 8 had proved to be detrimental in the first two ODIs. Rana, the burly man from the Delhi outskirts, smashsed 24 in the second game in Adelaide and that has made the Indian captain interested in a bowling all-rounder rather than a batter, who can just about roll his arm over. “I think the No. 8 position for us, if a batsman can make 20-25 runs there, which we have confidence that Harshit can do it, then it becomes a very important position,” Gill said at the post-match conference. There aren’t too many tall fast bowlers, who can hit the deck hard and bowl those effort balls. That is where Rana stands out, feels his skipper. “There are very few fast bowlers who are tall, who can bowl 140-plus. So if we are looking at South Africa, on such wickets, such bowlers become very important,” Gill explained. “Because in the middle overs we saw that the ball doesn’t move much off the wicket. So if you have a good height and pace, you can create chances. And I think that’s what happened.” Gill gave credit to the spinners for creating the pressure and Rana then took the wickets. “Australia got a very good start but the way our spinners bowled first, created pressure, and then Harshit bowled powerfully (effort balls) and I think he got a good reward for that.” Not bothered about my form ================== It is rare for Gill in ODIs that he finished a series without a half-century but the skipper said that he isn’t too bothered about his form. “In the first match, I got out down-the-leg side. So, I’m not thinking too much about my batting. Sometimes, it happens. You obviously want to perform for the team in every match, but I’m not too worried about my performance,” the skipper said.
