This furloughed IRS lawyer has a new side gig: running a hot dog stand

Hundreds of thousands of federal workers have been sent home amid the government shutdown. One of them has been using his newfound free time to sell hot dogs."This is self-expression," Isaac Stein, the 31-year-old owner of "Shyster's Dogs," told Business Insider at his hot dog stand in Washington, DC's NoMa neighborhood. "This is me having artistic fun."Stein has a day job: He's been working for three years as a lawyer at the Internal Revenue Service, where he handles tax regulations around employee benefits. But for the last three weeks, he's been working as a full-time hot dog vendor on the corner of First and M Street NE.The hot dog stand idea came to Stein months before the shutdown cleared his schedule. He said that he first made the decision to start the business in June, though it took months to obtain all of the necessary permits. Stein said he invested a "five-figure sum" into buying all of the equipment.A post shared by Isaac (@shystersdogs)By the time he was ready to go, it was September. He had originally planned to operate the stand outside of work hours, on Thursday and Friday evenings and over the weekend. "To be real, Thursday was a bit ambitious," Stein said. "It's hard to function in the office without enough sleep, and I want to be good at my legal job."Then, on October 8, he was "furloughed" — essentially suspended from his job until the shutdown ends. That turned his side gig into a nearly full-time job, and he now typically sells hot dogs from noon to 5 p.m. on weekdays.Stein's hot dog stand is laden with humor. The name "shyster," a slang word referring to a deceptive or unethical lawyer," is about wanting to "bring a laugh to the legal community," he told Business Insider."Part of what I'm doing with my expression here is there are many layers of irony," Stein said. "One of the layers is that I'm a lawyer, and I'm doing everything correctly. I have all the right permits, and I pay taxes."On his menu, he offers the "SHIRT OFF MY BACK" for $1,000. And the menu itself is fairly simple: if you order "The Only Choice," you'll get a hot dog with mustard and sauerkraut for $10. If you order "Hot Dog with the Wrong Toppings," you can have other toppings, such as ketchup — but you'll be charged more. That option costs $11."From a young age, I have wanted to punish people for putting ketchup on a hot dog. It's utterly mystifying to me as to why someone would want this. But to be commercially viable, you have to have it," Stein said. "The pricing difference is reflective of incentives: I want people to do it the right way."So far, Stein says his hobby has worked out well for him. He's been serving 40 to 50 customers per day, he said, and has been making $200 to $300 in profit each day. But for him, the hot dog stand has been less about making ends meet and more about taking on a creative project."It's given me a chance to be in the community more," Stein said. Some of his customers, he said, have very particular orders and have become regulars. "If I can bring that to their life, that makes me really happy."Still, Stein said that he's looking forward to returning to his day job, whenever that may be."People who are tax lawyers for the government aren't doing it for the money," he said. "Everyone wants to get back to work, because we actually like what we do."

CGTN: Restoring the History of Taiwan

BEIJING, Oct. 25, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- Men forget, and history overlooks. But history is not, and must not become, a blank page to be written on at will, as there are courageous individuals like writer Lan Bozhou, who deeply loves Taiwan, yet also carries a profound understanding of the suffering endured by the Chinese nation. The writer has devoted half his life to rescuing an era from the "deliberately forgotten" individuals in modern history of Taiwan. It's an era that represents the historical imprint of Chinese on both sides of the Strait, who stood united against foreign aggression with their flesh and blood during the 1950s. Through his collection and documentation, we learn that some youths in Taiwan journeyed thousands of miles to the mainland to fight against Japanese invasion. They were well-educated, and staked everything—for the sake of ideals, for the motherland—pursuing the dignity and future of the Chinese nation even at the cost of their lives. Through the perspective of Lan Bozhou, CGTN traces and documents the story of Wu Sihan, a youth in Taiwan who, over eighty years ago, embarked on a solitary journey of a thousand miles from the island to the mainland to join the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression. Born into a well-off family and an ace student, Wu was determined to return to the mainland to contribute to the war effort. He undertook an arduous trek alone—crossing the Tsushima Strait, traversing the Korean Peninsula, and traveling across the Yalu River. After a journey lasting more than a year, he finally reached Chongqing, then the wartime provisional capital of China. "Why was a youth of that era in Taiwan so determined? What compelled him to abandon a life of comfort and privilege to return to the war-torn mainland and join the resistance? Who, exactly, was Wu Sihan?" with these questions, the CGTN film crew joined Lan Bozhou on a journey to retrace Wu's own epic, thousand-mile quest from over eighty years ago—his personal odyssey in search of his motherland. CGTN Documentary "Restoring the History of Taiwan" tells a story about ideals and undying patriotism. No matter how wide the Taiwan Strait may be, it cannot surpass the shared resolve of one nation; no matter how much times change, they cannot alter the profound sense of national identity flowing in the veins of the Chinese people. Xi to pay state visit to South Korea from Thursday

BEIJING, China, Oct 25 — President Xi Jinping will attend the 32nd APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting in Gyeongju, the Republic of Korea, and pay a state visit to the country next week, the Foreign Ministry announced on Friday. Noting that APEC is the most important economic cooperation mechanism in the Asia-Pacific region, ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun said Xi’s attendance at the meeting “demonstrates the high importance China attaches to regional economic cooperation”. According to Guo, during the three-day trip starting from Thursday, Xi will deliver a speech at the APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting and hold bilateral talks with leaders of relevant countries. “China stands ready to work with all parties to promote Asia-Pacific cooperation, contribute to regional economic growth and jointly build an Asia-Pacific community with a shared future,” Guo told reporters at a regular news briefing in Beijing. Founded in 1989, the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation serves as a key platform for promoting free trade, economic cooperation and sustainable growth among its 21 member economies, which together account for nearly 60 percent of global GDP and almost half of global trade. On China-ROK relations, Guo said that China and the ROK are close neighbors and cooperative partners, emphasizing that China’s policy toward the ROK remains consistent and stable. “This visit marks President Xi’s first state visit to the ROK in 11 years and the first meeting between the two heads of state since ROK President Lee Jae-myung took office,” Guo said. “China is ready to work with the ROK to stay true to the original aspiration of establishing diplomatic ties, uphold good-neighborliness and mutual benefit, and advance the China-ROK strategic cooperative partnership,” the spokesman said. According to Xiang Haoyu, a senior research fellow at the China Institute of International Studies, Xi’s visit will mark the “restart and upgrade” of the highest-level exchanges between the two countries. “It will inject strong political momentum into the China-ROK relationship, which has faced challenges in recent years, help enhance its stability and resilience amid a complex international landscape, and contribute to peace and stability in Northeast Asia,” Xiang said. “By reaffirming and expanding consensus in areas such as trade, the economy and people-to-people exchanges, both sides can lay a solid foundation for rebuilding mutual political and security trust,” he added. Spotlight on GEM: A Gift from Egypt to the World – PM in MENA article

CAIRO, Oct 24 (MENA) – With the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) set to officially open on November 1, 2025, Egypt is preparing to welcome world leaders and distinguished guests to the monumental cultural and civilizational landmark, Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly said. Overlooking the Pyramids of Giza, the GEM is considered Egypt’s gift to the world and a symbol of the country’s rich heritage. Its inauguration is expected to mark a historic milestone. Describing the GEM as a gift to the world is not an exaggeration, Madbouli said, noting that the legacy of ancient Egyptian civilization is recognized as global heritage under UNESCO’s cultural and natural heritage standards. The announcement coincides with the opening of the “Treasures of the Pharaohs” exhibition in Rome, Italy, underscoring the universal value of Egypt’s heritage. The GEM will not only serve as a museum and archaeological destination but also as a center demonstrating Egypt’s national determination. Its collection includes an unparalleled number of ancient Egyptian artifacts, a grand entrance hall, and state-of-the-art exhibition spaces. The museum opens nearly two years after its foundation stone was laid, marking a key achievement for the country in realizing major national projects. As the GEM prepares to receive heads of state and dignitaries, Madbouly highlighted that Egypt aims to once again impress the world, following high-profile cultural events such as the Pharaohs’ Golden Parade in April 2021 and the reopening of the 3,000-year-old Avenue of the Sphinxes in Luxor in November 2021. While authorities are responsible for organizing the inauguration, every Egyptian citizen plays a part in presenting the country’s ancient civilization to the world, Madbouly said. The prime minister welcomed all guests to Egypt, underlining the country’s rich history, cultural treasures, and its leading role as a center of global heritage. (MENA)
