Reeling Vikings Face Major Test With Trip To Lions’ Den In Week 9

Old-school head coach Dan Campbell appears ready to punish Kevin O'Connell and the Vikings once again. (Photo by Nic Antaya/Getty Images) Getty Images The NFL was able to grow into the most powerful sports organization in North America years ago because of the belief that upsets can happen on an every-week basis. A struggling team could defeat one with championship aspirations because a significant turnaround can happen on “Any Given Sunday.” The most recent examples of poor teams coming up with significant upsets came in Week 8 as the winless New York Jets defeated the Cincinnati Bengals and the one-win Miami Dolphins hammered the Atlanta Falcons. Both the Jets and Dolphins had been lifeless teams before they were able to come up with those victories. Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell needs to take heart from the performance of both of those teams and the leadership of head coaches Aaron Glenn and Mike McDaniel. O’Connell and the Vikings face an even greater task than either of those teams when the Vikings (3-4) go to Ford Field Sunday to take on the surging and dangerous Detroit Lions (5-2). The Lions have arguably been the best team in the NFC since the start of last season. Their Super Bowl aspirations were short-circuited a year ago because of a series of defensive injuries that saw their season come to a painful conclusion in the divisional playoffs. Head coach Dan Campbell is as close to an old-school leader as there is in the NFL. He demands maximum anger and motivation from his players and the Lions always come onto the field with a full head of steam and ready to blow out their opponents. Campbell may not bring back memories of disciplinarians like Don Shula and Tom Landry, but he is the closest thing in the league to those coaches of yesteryear. Despite his demanding ways, Lions players like Jared Goff, Amon-Ra St. Brown and Aidan Hutchinson love playing for Campbell and he is one of the NFL’s elite head coaches. MORE FOR YOU McCarthy replacing Wentz at QB J.J. McCarthy returns to the lineup against the motivated and dangerous Detroit Lions. (Photo by Michael Reaves/Getty Images) Getty Images The Vikings are reeling after suffering back-to-back losses to the Eagles and Chargers. Quarterback Carson Wentz tried to fill in, but he was forced to play through a fractured shoulder and a torn labrum. He is done for the season, and J.J. McCarthy finally gets to play again for the first time since Week 2. He will be thrown into the fray against one of the angriest and nastiest teams in the league. McCarthy has suffered significant injuries in each of his first two seasons – Achilles in 2024 and high ankle sprain in 2025 – and the Lions will come after him with every bit of strength and power they have. In addition to their shaky situation at quarterback, the Vikings have a slew of weaknesses that have sent them reeling this season. The Vikings can't protect their signal callers because they allow too many sacks. This problems was supposed to have been solved in the offseason with the addition of center Ryan Kelly and guard Will Fries, but injuries to offensive tackles Christian Darrisaw and Brian O'Neill have prevented the offensive line from asserting itself and protecting their beleaguered quarterbacks. The run defense has fallen apart. The Vikings get pushed backwards when opponents use an extra tight end to overpower the front seven. The Brian Flores defense is supposed to be a difference maker for the Vikings, but it has become a liability. The running game has been a major disappointment. Aaron Jones suffered a hamstring injury in Week 2 and the onus was on backup Jordan Mason after that. The former 49er has been moderately respectable as he has gained 383 yards on 88 carries and is averaging 4.35 yards per carry, but he can’t do it alone. Mason’s yards seem to come on his own as the offensive line (see above) has been overwhelmed throughout the majority of the season. The Vikings are hurting badly and loaded with question marks. They are facing a divisional opponent that is peaking and has major advantages all over the field. The Lions are heavy favorites in this game and a blowout loss seems to be at hand. The only thing that O’Connell has going for himself and his players is the NFL mantra exemplified by the Jets and Dolphins last week. “On any given Sunday” a major upset is possible. That may be true, but the Vikings have little else to turn to at this point. Editorial StandardsReprints & Permissions

Rohan Jaitley, Mithun Manhas Discuss Cricket Development With J&K CM Omar Abdullah

In a significant effort to enhance cricket facilities in Jammu and Kashmir, BCCI Infrastructure Committee chairman Rohan Jaitley and BCCI president Mithun Manhas met Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Monday to plan the development of world-class infrastructure and nurture young talent in the region. Sources from the Chief Minister’s Office reported that the meeting focused on improving existing cricket facilities, developing new stadiums, and creating a solid framework for grooming emerging players across J&K. The meeting centred on the infrastructural development of cricket in Jammu and Kashmir. Jaitley and Manhas held discussions with Abdullah, CMO sources revealed to IANS. The BCCI delegation pledged full support for upgrading the region’s cricketing ecosystem, including establishing modern training centres, better pitches, and advanced amenities at key venues in Jammu and Srinagar. Chief Minister Abdullah welcomed the initiative, emphasising that sports development plays a crucial role in youth engagement and social cohesion. He appreciated the BCCI’s commitment to empowering local players and expanding opportunities for aspiring cricketers from the Union Territory. This meeting marks a significant step towards finalising a comprehensive roadmap between the BCCI and the Jammu and Kashmir Cricket Association to transform the region’s cricketing landscape. Last month, Jaitley was appointed as the chair of the BCCI Infrastructure Committee, while Manhas was elected as the new BCCI president, with Rajeev Shukla and Devajit Saikia re-elected as vice-president and secretary, respectively, at the 94th Annual General Meeting. The 45-year-old former cricketer, Manhas, played domestic cricket for Delhi before moving to Jammu and Kashmir, where he also took up coaching roles. (With IANS Inputs)

Alice (Cooper) In Wonderland: Rock Fantasy Camp To Feature The Legend

Alice (Cooper) In Wonderland: Rock Fantasy Camp To Feature The Legend

LONDON, ENGLAND - OCTOBER 20, 2024: Alice Cooper performs at Eventim Apollo. (Photo by Matthew Baker/Getty Images) Getty Images Early next month I'm heading to Phoenix, Arizona, to participate in David Fishof's 30-year-old Rock 'n' Roll Fantasy Camp. The idea is that amateur musicians, for a price, get to jam with big-deal rock stars. I'm a lapsed drummer, and thought it would be interesting to participate and to write about the place. For this particular camp, Alice Cooper is one of the featured artists. I had interviewed Alice recently, but by phone. Now would be my chance to meet the legend in person, and for us to actually jam. It's been four decades since I've been behind a drum kit in any meaningful way. In the late 1980s, I had a band called The VPs, which, like Weird Al Yankovic, wrote parody songs. Our difference was that we were business executives on Wall Street and Madison Avenue by day poking fun at our yuppie lifestyles by night. We got semi-famous for like, 15 seconds playing at then-hot New York clubs including The Tunnel and Limelight, and at lucrative corporate parties. Along the way, we released three LPs, sold via a direct response network using television commercials on CNN, VH-1 and MTV. We were also featured on mainstream television media including The Today Show and Good Morning America, and in the New York Times Magazine and USA Today. LAS VEGAS - NOVEMBER 11, 2007: David Fishof, CEO and founder of Rock 'n' Roll Fantasy Camp, auctions off a poster for charity during the camp's anniversary Campalooza concert at the House of Blues inside the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino. (Photo by Ethan Miller/Getty Images) Getty Images Classics like "Love Potion Number Nine" became "Stockbroker On The Line," and "Secret Agent Man" became "Madison Avenue Man." You get the picture. Our records amusingly are still available as collector's items on eBay. Yesterday at Guitar Center in Daytona Beach, Florida, I took my first drum refresher lesson with Gal Galamity, an accomplished pro sticks-man. I was apprehensive, of course, what with the long lag time since I had played. Once I sat down and adjusted the drum kit, though, it wasn't so bad. The song I'm to perform with Alice is "I'm 18," with a fairly straightforward 4/4 beat. After running through the tune several times with guidance from Gal, I was able to replicate the drum part fairly accurately. Another reason I chose "18" is that when I was in my teen band, we covered it, although I was only 17 at the time. How far we've all come over the decades. In addition to running through the song, Gal taught me some simple rudiments like paradiddles and proper hand stick grip. Since I'm self-taught, I've picked up a lot of bad habits, and the rudiments and such helped me see the drum kit in a different light. We're also going to rehearse “No More Mr. Nice Guy," a bit more complex than "18" in the hopes I might perform that one with Alice as well. We'll see how it goes. HOLLYWOOD, CA - OCTOBER 06, 2020: Guitar Center on the Sunset Strip after announcement of rock legend Eddie Van Halen's death. (Photo by AaronP/Bauer-Griffin/GC Images) Next week, I'm heading back to Guitar Center for another lesson. To prepare, I've purchased a drum pad and medium-sized sticks. Hopefully, I'll be able to incorporate yesterday’s learning into the tunes. In any case, stay tuned for a full report on the fantasy camp experience. Camp counselors Britt Lightning of The Vixens, and Ron Blumenthal of Bumblefoot Music LLC, say drumming is like riding a bicycle - mostly muscle memory - but I have my doubts. Don't want to bonk playing with Alice. Maybe the shock rocker really would turn into that "no more mister nice guy" persona. Naw, Alice is a fun cat, and a crack golfer, too. Looking forward! The 10 biggest women's NCAA basketball questions for 2025-26

The 10 biggest women's NCAA basketball questions for 2025-26

When the UConn Huskies won their fourth consecutive NCAA women's basketball title (11th overall) in 2016, no one would have guessed nearly a decade would pass before they celebrated a championship again. Last season, though, the Huskies dominated Final Four foes UCLA and South Carolina, giving the program and coach Geno Auriemma a 12th national championship. Can the Huskies win a 13th? UConn is ranked No. 1 in the preseason poll despite losing standout Paige Bueckers, the top draft pick and Rookie of the Year this past WNBA season. Many other top contending teams from last season return strong, too, though USC superstar JuJu Watkins is sitting out 2025-2026 after tearing her right ACL in the NCAA tournament in March. Everyone had to adjust to more major shifts in conference realignment last season, but the dust has settled ... for now. Before we officially get started on the road to Phoenix -- a first-time host for the women's Final Four -- ESPN's Michael Voepel, Charlie Creme and Kendra Andrews ask and answer 10 burning questions for the 2025-26 college basketball season. Can UConn repeat? Not only can the Huskies repeat, they should be considered the favorites to deliver another championship to Storrs. That said, this isn't the 2016 Huskies of Breanna Stewart, Morgan Tuck and Moriah Jefferson coming off three consecutive titles. UCLA, South Carolina, Texas and LSU are also viable candidates, and UConn does have to replace one of the best players in the storied history of the program in Bueckers. But the Huskies are the preseason No. 1 team in the country for a reason. A few reasons, really. Sarah Strong appears in line to join the group of all-time UConn greats. The 6-foot-2 sophomore was quietly dominant a year ago (16.4 PPG, 8.9 RPG, 3.6 APG, 2.3 SPG, 58.6% FG) and might be the best player in the nation. Put highly productive Wisconsin transfer Serah Williams next to Strong, plus the size of 6-5 Jana El Alfy, 6-3 Ice Brady and the talented 6-2 freshman Blanca Quiñonez, and Auriemma has as deep and versatile a frontcourt as he has had in recent memory. Now couple all that length with an array of shooters -- led by All-American contender Azzi Fudd, who was finally healthy last season and shined in the Final Four -- and these Huskies have all the elements of being champions again. -- Creme How will Ta'Niya Latson improve the backcourt for South Carolina? After averaging a Division I-leading 25.2 PPG last season for Florida State, Latson wanted to be on a bigger stage for her senior year. South Carolina provides that. In turn, she provides the Gamecocks with proven high-level scoring. Only two of the Gamecocks' top eight scorers from last season's national runner-up team -- Joyce Edwards (12.7 PPG) and Tessa Johnson (8.4 PPG) -- are on the roster this season. The others either graduated, transferred or are out with injury. Coach Dawn Staley still has many talented players. Some, such as highly touted freshmen guards Agot Makeer and Ayla McDowell, might take a little time to develop. But there shouldn't be much of a learning curve for Latson, who could have been a high first-round pick in April had she decided to enter the WNBA draft (she was age-eligible). Raven Johnson is in her fifth year (she redshirted her freshman season with a knee injury) and Tessa Johnson is in her third. Combined with Latson, they make a very experienced backcourt trio. The Gamecocks have won or tied for the SEC regular-season title nine of the past 12 years, and also won the league tournament title nine times in that stretch. Expect Texas, LSU, Oklahoma and Tennessee to be South Carolina's top challengers in the conference. The Longhorns and Sooners adjusted well to the league in their first year, and the Lady Vols had a solid showing under first-year coach Kim Caldwell. All of them, along with LSU, are itching to fully knock the Gamecocks off their perch. But that will continue to be a huge challenge. -- Voepel Can UCLA and Texas build on disappointing Final Fours? If nothing else, how last season ended should be fuel for both teams. "Disappointing" might sound odd, considering the Bruins had never made the Final Four in the NCAA era, and the Longhorns had not been that far since 2003. So getting to the national semifinals was a huge deal. However, both lost big there: UCLA by 34 points to UConn, and Texas by 17 to South Carolina. This season, the Bruins' roster looks a lot different after losing most of their freshman class and key rotation players Londynn Jones and Janiah Barker to the transfer portal. But they retained most of their core, including leading scorer Lauren Betts, one of the best players in the country. UCLA is also bringing back 69% of its scoring and 55% of its rebounding from last season. The Bruins add Betts' sister, Sienna, the No. 2-ranked prospect in the nation for the 2025 class, and Lena Bilić, a top overseas prospect. The Bruins have a challenging nonconference schedule, with multiple games against teams in the preseason top 10 -- including Texas, which went 35-4 and earned a share of the SEC regular-season title in its first year in the conference. Junior forward Madison Booker (16.3 PPG, 6.6RPG, 46.6% FG) was SEC player of the year -- an honor she's picked to repeat this season. Texas coach Vic Schaefer is challenging Booker to continue to grow not just on the court but also as a vocal leader as the team brings in several new faces and leans more heavily on the sophomore class. -- Andrews How will USC do without JuJu Watkins? The pendulum could swing in either direction for the Trojans. The talent is still plentiful even without Watkins, but much of it is young. If Kennedy Smith (9.5 PPG) makes that big sophomore leap and if the nation's top-rated recruit Jazzy Davidson plays up to her status, USC could be a top-15 team and compete for a spot near the top of the Big Ten. The production and leadership of transfers Kara Dunn (Georgia Tech) and Londynn Jones (UCLA) will also be key. This is also a team that could finish outside the top five in the Big Ten and roll into the NCAA tournament as a No. 6 or 7 seed. The Trojans relied heavily on Watkins the past two seasons, so they will need to shift their approach. Not only was Watkins the centerpiece of the offense, taking pressure off the rest of the lineup, she was one of the premier defenders in the country. Those roles and production will now be spread out across the roster and will immediately be tested by a nonconference schedule that includes NC State, South Carolina, Notre Dame, UConn and UCLA before Jan. 3. How the young and new-look Trojans survive that stretch might define how much Watkins is missed. -- Creme How will MiLaysia Fulwiley fit at LSU? Through her two college seasons at South Carolina, Fulwiley's career could be defined as electrifying: She was called a walking highlight reel. Her career was also characterized by wild fluctuations in reliability and production. Her 11.7 points and 2.0 assists per game last season were accompanied by a 1.1 assist-to-turnover ratio and 25.8% 3-point shooting. Now an opportunity awaits in Baton Rouge to be a full-time point guard. If Fulwiley embraces the job, and the consistency it requires, she will flourish -- especially since she will be flanked by two other potential All-Americans in Flau'Jae Johnson and Mikaylah Williams. Fulwiley's future as a pro is likely playing the point. With Raven Johnson returning to South Carolina for one more season, the chance for Fulwiley to hone those skills full-time wasn't going to happen until 2026-27. So the move to LSU makes sense. Although she's leaving one of the all-time great point guards in coach Dawn Staley, she'll now be mentored by another Hall of Famer who knows a fair amount about the position in Kim Mulkey. -- Creme Is Duke ready to take that next step under Kara Lawson? Lawson took over in the 2020-21 season, which lasted just four games before being cancelled due to COVID-19. But it has been a steady build since in Durham. The Blue Devils missed the 2022 NCAA tournament, made the second round in 2023, the Sweet 16 in 2024 and the Elite Eight last season with a 29-8 record. Now, what is perhaps the most talented Duke team under Lawson could take the next step to the Final Four. It is also the favorite in the ACC. Duke's recruiting has also continued to improve. In each of the past two years Lawson has landed a top-10 high school player: Toby Fournier, the 2025 ACC rookie of the year, and Emilee Skinner, who should be the Blue Devils' starting point guard when they open the season Nov. 3 against Baylor in Paris. The Blue Devils' defense has been the program's calling card under Lawson. If veterans such as Ashlon Jackson (12.4 PPG), Delaney Thomas (7.1 PPG) and Taina Mair (3.6 APG) can produce enough offense, and the NCAA tournament matchups are more favorable (South Carolina and UConn eliminated the Blue Devils the previous two seasons), Duke could break through to its first Final Four since 2006. -- Creme Can TCU repeat the transfer magic? The Horned Frogs are coming off their best-ever season: They went 34-4, won the Big 12 regular-season and tournament titles and made the Elite Eight, all program firsts. But TCU lost four senior starters, all of whom were transfers -- including leading scorers Hailey Van Lith (17.9 PPG) and Sedona Prince (17.2). Nevertheless, TCU is the Big 12 preseason favorite, in large part because coach Mark Campbell has restocked from the portal. That talent infusion is led by point guard Olivia Miles (Notre Dame), forward Marta Suarez (Cal) and 6-7 centers Clara Silva (Kentucky) and Kennedy Basham (Arizona State). Transfer guard Maddie Scherr, who joined the team last season but didn't play because of an injury, is healthy and should also significantly contribute. Miles said recently that the group has bonded quickly, and that she is looking forward to having several big posts to work with in the pick-and-roll. TCU's top challengers in the Big 12 should be similar to last season: Baylor, Iowa State, Oklahoma State and West Virginia. -- Voepel Is Hannah Hidalgo ready to be Notre Dame's sole leader? Miles' departure to TCU put the keys to the Irish offense back firmly in the hands of Hidalgo, who was the lead point guard in 2023-24 when Miles was injured and sat out the season. Plus, three other Irish starters and a top reserve from last season are no longer in South Bend. So, this is the junior guard's show even more than it has ever been. In her two seasons at Notre Dame, she averaged 23.1 points, 5.6 rebounds, 4.6 assists and 4.2 steals. She won the ACC's player of the year and defensive player of the year honors last season and is expected to win them again. Notre Dame is predicted to finish fifth in the ACC, so we will see if Hidalgo can lead them to a better finish than that. -- Voepel Will Stanford bounce back from a non-NCAA tournament season? It's likely no program felt the effects of change more than Stanford last season. Tara VanDerveer, the architect of Stanford as a powerhouse program going back to her arrival in 1985, retired. Her longtime assistant and former player Kate Paye took over as coach, but had to face a new conference, with both Stanford and Cal moving to the ACC. That meant cross-country travel for conference play. The Cardinal finished 16-15 overall and 8-10 in the ACC, missing the NCAA tournament for the first time since 1987. They will look to reclaim their contender identity this season -- or at least start on the path to that. Stanford is projected to finish sixth in the ACC behind Duke, NC State, North Carolina, Louisville and Notre Dame. Junior forward Sunaja "Nunu" Agara was named to the preseason All-ACC team, while guard Hailee Swain and forward Lara Somfai were named to the conference's preseason All-Freshman team. Stanford's five-player recruiting class was ranked No. 3 by ESPN's Shane Laflin, and this could be the group that helps define the Cardinal's next era. -- Voepel Which conference will earn the most NCAA tournament bids? Our preseason Bracketology has 13 Big Ten teams in the NCAA tournament field, 11 ACC and nine SEC. Heading into the new season, the Big Ten looks like the deepest conference and should be in a position to break its own mark of 12 tournament teams set last spring. Seven of those 12 were seeded No. 6 or lower, and this season's projection sets that number at eight. But UCLA looks like the only national title contender from the conference. The SEC has five of its projected nine teams in the top 16, and produced two Final Four teams last season. The middle and bottom of this league do not have as many good teams as the Big Ten, but the SEC has more teams who are considered elite and have produced more in recent NCAA tournaments. Before Iowa guard Caitlin Clark's national takeover in 2023, the Big Ten hadn't produced a Final Four team since the 2015 Maryland Terrapins in their first season after leaving the ACC. The argument about which is the better measuring stick of a conference's strength will rage on, but expect the Big Ten to produce the most bids. -- Creme

Will Comcast Rally On Q3 Earnings?

Photo Illustration by Sheldon Cooper/SOPA Images/LightRocket via Getty Images SOPA Images/LightRocket via Getty Images Comcast (NASDAQ:CMCSA) is scheduled to announce its earnings on Thursday, October 30, 2025. Revenue is predicted to decrease by around 4% to $30.7 billion, according to consensus estimates, while earnings are anticipated to be about $1.10 per share. Comcast's Internet segment has encountered challenges, as wired broadband competitors face escalating market saturation and substantial competitive pressure from alternative internet options, particularly 5G Fixed Wireless Access offered by mobile network operators. In Q2, the company experienced a loss of 226,000 total broadband customers, most of whom were from its residential sector. Nevertheless, Comcast has recently adjusted its broadband strategy to emphasize more transparent, no-surprise pricing and also to bundle wired and wireless services, along with improvements to its network. The company possesses $111 billion in current market capitalization. Revenue for the past twelve months amounted to $124 billion, and it was operationally profitable, yielding $23 billion in operating income and $23 billion in net earnings. While much will hinge on how results measure up against consensus and expectations, grasping historical trends might enhance your chances if you are an event-driven trader. There are two approaches to accomplish that: understanding the historical probabilities and positioning oneself before the earnings announcement, or analyzing the relationship between short-term and medium-term returns following earnings and positioning accordingly after the earnings are disclosed. That said, if you are looking for upside with reduced volatility compared to individual stocks, the Trefis High Quality portfolio offers an alternative – it has outperformed the S&P 500 and delivered returns exceeding 105% since its inception. Comcast's Historical Chances of Positive Post-Earnings Return A few observations on one-day (1D) post-earnings returns: MORE FOR YOU There have been 20 earnings data points recorded over the past five years, with 11 positive and 9 negative one-day (1D) returns noted. In summary, positive 1D returns occurred approximately 55% of the time. Significantly, this percentage rises to 58% if we consider data for the last 3 years instead of 5. The median of the 11 positive returns = 3.4%, and the median of the 9 negative returns = -5.8% Additional information for observed 5-Day (5D) and 21-Day (21D) returns following earnings is outlined along with the statistics in the table below. 1D, 5D, and 21D Post Earnings Return Relationship Between 1D, 5D, and 21D Historical Returns A relatively lower-risk strategy (though not beneficial if the correlation is weak) is to comprehend the correlation between short-term and medium-term returns following earnings, find a pairing that exhibits the highest correlation, and execute the relevant trade. For instance, if 1D and 5D show the greatest correlation, a trader can take a “long” position for the next 5 days if the 1D post-earnings return is positive. Here is some correlation data based on a 5-year and a 3-year (more recent) history. Please note that the correlation 1D_5D refers to the relationship between 1D post-earnings returns and subsequent 5D returns. Relationship Between 1D, 5D, and 21D Historical Returns Discover more about Trefis RV strategy that has outperformed its all-cap stocks benchmark (a combination of all three, the S&P 500, S&P mid-cap, and Russell 2000), producing strong returns for investors. What to expect from Down Cemetery Road? The show is set to bring to life another of Mick Herron’s literary creations - private investigator Zoë Boehm. Played in the show by Emma Thompson, it adapts the first book in the series - the titular Down Cemetery Road. The synopsis, via Apple TV, reads: “When a house explodes in a quiet Oxford suburb and a girl disappears in the aftermath, neighbour Sarah Trafford (Ruth Wilson) becomes obsessed with finding her and enlists the help of private investigator Zoë Boehm (Emma Thompson). Zoë and Sarah suddenly find themselves in a complex conspiracy that reveals that people long believed dead are still among the living, while the living are fast joining the dead.” Who is in the cast of Down Cemetery Road? Baby Reindeer’s Tom Goodman-Hill is also part of the cast, after his award-nominated turn in the Netflix show. Filming took place in Bristol last year for the programme. Is Down Cemetery Road related to Slow Horses? As previously mentioned, Down Cemetery Road is based on another series of novels by Mick Herron. The Zoë Boehm books actually predate the Slough House stories with Down Cemetery Road being his debut novel. Despite being by the same author, there is not much crossover between the two series. The Zoë Boehm books are set in the world of private investigators and not spies. The only real connection is sharing the same author and both being turned into shows on Apple TV. The Zoë Boehm series had four books between 2003 and 2009. On the topic of Slow Horses, find out what time the season five finale will be released this week. Matheus Cunha Has Given Man Utd Something It Was Missing

MANCHESTER, ENGLAND - OCTOBER 25: Matheus Cunha of Manchester United celebrates after scoring their 1st goal during the Premier League match between Manchester United and Brighton & Hove Albion at Old Trafford on October 25, 2025 in Manchester, England. (Photo by Simon Stacpoole/Offside/Offside via Getty Images) Offside via Getty Images The outlook at Manchester United has dramatically changed over the last month or so. While Ruben Amorim was under serious pressure only a few weeks ago, the Portuguese coach has turned United’s form around and Matheus Cunha has been a key part of that unexpected resurgence. Signed from Wolves for $82m in the summer transfer window, Cunha arrived at Old Trafford on the back of an excellent 2024/25 campaign. The Brazilian registered 15 goals and six assists for Wolves, marking himself out as one of the best all-round attacking players in the Premier League. MANCHESTER, ENGLAND - AUGUST 09: Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha of Manchester United interact with Ruben Amorim, Manager of Manchester United during the pre-season friendly match between Manchester United and ACF Fiorentina at Old Trafford on August 09, 2025 in Manchester, England. (Photo by Matt McNulty/Getty Images) Getty Images It was unsurprising that a club of Manchester United’s standing came calling in the summer, but it wasn’t immediately clear what role Cunha would play for his new team. United already had Bruno Fernandes as a goal-scoring number 10 with Bryan Mbeumo also joining in the summer transfer window. However, Amorim always envisaged Cunha operating as the left-sided number 10 in his system which accommodated Fernandes and Mbeumo in the same side. While Cunha scored his first United goal in the win over Brighton on Saturday, he has contributed in a number of matches this season. MORE FOR YOU Cunha is the sort of player Manchester United were desperately lacking. There’s an arrogance to the way the Brazilian plays that gives him the confidence to take on responsibility when things are going against his team. Cunha is the sort of player who relishes the pressure on his shoulders. He can take our team forward. He needs to improve a lot of things, especially defending, but he has something special and he is a really important player for us.” In the recent win over Liverpool at Anfield, Cunha was the player who allowed Manchester United to breathe when under pressure. The Brazilian is excellent at absorbing possession and somehow keeping hold of it when being closed down by opponents. This gave United oxygen in some key moments of the match. There is much more to come from Cunha. He surely hopes to add to his tally of goals and assists over the course of the campaign with the Brazilian starting to develop an understanding with the likes of Fernandes, Mbeumo and Benjamin Sesko. Cunha looks like being $82m well spent. Editorial StandardsReprints & Permissions

If You’re Missing Alan Wake 2, Try These Five Creepy Books

atmospheric photo of streetlight at night in fog Several books inspired Alan Wake 2’s unsettling take on American horror. Try the five books listed below if you'd like to spend more time in equally creepy fictional worlds. The leaves are falling, it’s getting chilly, and all I want to do is spend my evenings evading zombie-like townsfolk in Bright Falls, the fictional small coastal town in Remedy Entertainment’s horror classic, Alan Wake 2. In Alan Wake and Alan Wake 2, you play as the best-selling crime novelist Alan Wake, whose wife disappears while the pair are on vacation in Bright Falls. Eventually, Alan becomes trapped by the “Dark Presence,” a sinister supernatural force that attempts to coerce Alan into writing a twisted horror story that will come true and free the Dark Presence from its prison. While the Alan Wake games include plenty of traditional hallmarks of horror—cultists, zombie-like creatures, lights flickering on and off—they are also known for their quirky but unsettling metafictional elements. Alan Wake is a story about Alan writing a story about Alan writing a story, and the game plays with this in creative ways. If you’ve already played the Alan Wake 2 DLCs and are looking for additional ways to experience Remedy’s mind-bending take on horror, check out: House of Leaves This year marks the 25-year anniversary of the publication of House of Leaves, Mark Z. Danielewski’s innovative horror novel. House of Leaves tells multiple stories—at its center it’s about a sinister house that is bigger on the inside than the outside, but it’s also about the lasting impact of family trauma. House of Leaves is best known for its stylistic experimentation: one storyline plays out entirely in footnotes, text is often written upside down, and many pages contain only a few words. Remedy’s creative director Sam Lake admitted that House of Leaves inspired Alan Wake 2: “The layered structure of the narrative, the way it comes together and is interweaved, so that you get lost in the labyrinth of it—all of that has been a big inspiration.” Like Alan Wake 2, House of Leaves pulls the reader into the story and blurs the line between reality and fiction. MORE FOR YOU The Raw Shark Texts If you like House of Leaves and want more of its brand of edgy, experimental metafiction, you should check out The Raw Shark Texts (a play on Rorschach tests). British author Steven Hall’s debut novel takes obvious cues from House of Leaves, but it reads more like a thriller than a horror novel. The Raw Shark Texts follows Eric Sanderson as he attempts to recover from amnesia by following a collection of clues he left himself. Eric ends up falling in love while evading an invisible shark that feeds on human memories. This “frightening, funny and daring mess” of a novel sometimes falls flat—it can feel a little pompous and a little forced—but it’s worth a read if you like novels that blur the line between reality and fiction. The Haunting of Hill House Published in 1959, Shirley Jackson’s The Haunting of Hill House is an American horror classic. Jackson’s novel focuses on a cast of characters who take up residence in a purportedly haunted house in order to investigate supernatural phenomena. Over the course of the story, the characters become increasingly unstable as they witness, or believe that they witness, a series of paranormal events. What makes The Haunting of Hill House stand out from other haunted house tales is Jackson’s nuanced portrayal of her characters—the novel’s true horror comes from her vivid portrayal of their psychological deterioration. Like Alan Wake, The Haunting of Hill House uses the horror genre to explore the trauma and psychological limits of its characters. White Tears Hari Kunzru’s White Tears is an unsettling horror thriller about two young white men who become haunted by a jazz musician from America’s past. Hipsters Seth and Carter make a killing by selling old-timey audio "authenticity" through their music editing services. One day, the pair post an audio clip they recorded in their travels, but they fabricate the identity of an old blues singer, Charlie Shaw, and claim that the clip is his. Shortly after, they are contacted by a record collector who informs them that Shaw was, in fact, real. What follows is a disturbing, unconventional ghost story that charts America’s history of racism, exploitation, and cultural appropriation. White Tears and Alan Wake are about very different topics, but they both excel at portraying the panic that ensues when reality starts to fall apart. Salem’s Lot Creative director Sam Lake has spoken about the strong influence Stephen King had on the Alan Wake universe, as evidenced by the fact that the original Alan Wake game opens with a quote by King: “Nightmares exist outside of logic, and there’s little fun to be had in explanations; they’re antithetical to the poetry of fear.” The second novel King wrote and one of the author’s favorites, Salem’s Lot describes the horror that unfolds when vampires move into a small town in Maine. While many of King’s stories would be a good complement to Alan Wake 2, Salem’s Lot has much in common with Alan Wake 2: both revolve around a writer trying to complete his next novel. Both are set in small coastal towns and focus on the stagnation and decline of American small-town life. Editorial StandardsReprints & Permissions

How Replacing One Word Can Boost Your Motivation And Well-Being

Say "should" enough and you’ll see that it’s a big guilt trap. We say the word “should” so often we don’t even realize its effect on our brain and our lives. It seems like a harmless enough word, but say it enough and you’ll see that it’s a big guilt trap. I should be more successful. I should go to the gym more. I should eat better. I should feel more grateful. Every should you think and utter adds one more layer of self-criticism and guilt that weighs you down. By the end of the day you might be carrying a thousand shoulds on your shoulder. When it comes to our mental health, should has all the best intentions, but its impact can be harmful. Every should insinuates that you’re failing in that area, that you’re not measuring up in some way. It might seem innocuous, but this one small word can inflict more mental health damage than people realize. As you go about your day, muttering shoulds here and there insidiously chips away at your motivation and self-worth. The Psychology Behind “Should” If you’re familiar with cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), you’ve probably heard the term, “cognitive distortion:” an irrational thought pattern that reinforces negative beliefs about yourself. Here are a few examples of some of the most prevalent cognitive distortions: Black and white thinking (or all or nothing thinking): “If i don’t get this promotion, I’m a total failure.” Catastrophizing: “He didn’t call to check in so he must be dead.” Overgeneralization: “I didn’t get the promotion, therefore I’ll never be successful in this company.” Mind reading: “They yawned while I was talking so they must think I’m boring.” And those are but a few. The father of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), Aaron Beck, also labeled “should statements” as a cognitive distortion, observing that they led people to determine their worth against unrealistic or external standards. MORE FOR YOU Turns out, Beck’s suspicion was correct. Neuroscience has now shown that our inner critic creates physiological stress. A 2010 study found that self-critical thoughts activate the same brain regions involved in pain and threat detection. In other words, when you tell yourself “I should be better,” your brain reacts as if it’s under attack. Another issue with telling yourself how you should be is that it breeds perfectionism, which happens to be one of the most common psychological traps for high-achieving women. We often think that perfectionism is about healthy striving, but according to Dr. Brené Brown’s research, it’s more about fear of judgment; every “should” you say to yourself keeps that fear alive. How “Should” Keeps You Stuck We will feel stuck when we feel backed into a corner, when we’re forced to do something against our will. When you tell yourself you should be doing something that you’re not, you’re judging yourself based on When you tell yourself what you “should” be doing, you’re removing the freedom that comes with choice. These shoulds turn into obligations, which are mentally exhausting. While the intent behind the should is motivation, the end result is procrastination and self-reproach. Psychologist Albert Ellis, who developed Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT), called this “shoulding all over yourself.” Interestingly, his research showed that people who overuse “should” statements report higher levels of anxiety, guilt, and depression because they’ve internalized rigid, external rules that don’t leave space for self-compassion and autonomy. When you remove someone’s sense of autonomy, it can make their brain feel attacked. You don’t even have to actually stifle their autonomy in reality, it can just be the sense that the autonomy is restricted. Keep in mind, when it comes to internalizing rigid, external rules, it’s not the rules themselves that are necessarily bad, it’s that feeling that you “should” be doing something springs from an external expectation you’ve imposed on yourself. Moreover, this may not even be a real expectation in the external world, but one that you’ve projected onto it. When you start linking your self-worth to “should,” you start living life by a rulebook written out of insecurities authored by social expectations, parental scripts, and invisible comparisons. Shift Your Language And You Shift Your Mindset You can break the “should” mold by switching that word out for more positive, healthy words rooted in choice and your genuine, honest desire. When you swap out should for words that express agency and desire, you shift your mindset. In the world of motivational psychology, there is a framework called self-determination theory, which proves that people thrive when they act from choice (intrinsic motivation), not pressure (extrinsic motivation). When you have a “should” mentality, you remove choice and agency from the picture and you’re acting out of obligation. This will drain you and lead to burnout. You need to shift into an autonomy mindset, which fuels motivation. The more agency we feel, the more fulfilled, happier, and resilient we will be. Neuroscience supports this as well. A 2013 study showed that the brain relaxes into the task we are performing if we are doing it from a place of autonomy (“I choose to”) vs obligation (“I should”). Here are a few powerful replacements to illustrate how to shift your should mindset into an autonomous one: “I could go exercise” instead of “I should exercise.” “I want to spend more time with my family” instead of “I should spend more time with my family.” “I’d feel better if I went to bed earlier” instead of “I should go to bed earlier.” “I’m choosing to say no” instead of “I should say no.” It’s a subtle shift that packs a big punch. Your mind is listening to everything you think. Shifting your language from obligation to desire will increase your motivation and give you a sense of control over your life. Reclaiming Your Mind As a final thought, it helps to examine what’s generating the shoulds in your mind. You might find that they’re carryovers from childhood, internalized societal expectations, or even ones you generated yourself out of social comparison. When you start living according to your own choices and you drop the “shoulds,” you start living according to your own values. The more you can shift into an autonomy mindset, the more fulfilled you’ll feel. The trick is to reframe those should statements. For instance, if you catch yourself thinking, “I should be more patient,” try reframing it as, “What would help me feel calmer right now?” In that single shift, you’re turning self-criticism into self-compassion; that’s where real growth begins. Cyclone Montha: Heavy rain causes landslides in Odisha, normal life affected

Bhubaneswar, Oct 28 (PTI) The severe cyclonic storm Montha on Tuesday brought heavy rain in coastal and southern Odisha districts, causing landslides and damaging houses besides uprooting trees, officials said. The landfall of Montha started Kakinada in neighbouring Andhra Pradesh about 7 pm and the process will continue for three to four hours, the Met office said. The preliminary reports of damages were received from eight southern Odisha districts of Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada, Gajapati, Ganjam, Kandhamal, Kalahandi and Nabarangpur. Normal life, however, was affected in a total of 15 districts in the region. A report from Anaka Gram Panchayat in Gajapati district said big boulders fell from nearby hills, blocking roads to five villages. “The place was earlier identified as landslide landslide-prone area. Therefore, arrangements have been made for early clearance of the blockade,” said Balakrushna Mallick, a local panchayat functionary. Another landslide was also reported from Linga–Barabha road in Partoda panchayat Kashinagar block of Gajapati. Trees were also uprooted in Gunupur, Gudari and Ramnaguda areas of Rayagada district. “Reports of damage from different districts would be compiled once the cyclone crosses the state,” an official at the Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) office said. However, a report from Gajapati district said that a supply assistant engaged in managing cyclone shelter at Potara panchayat died after suddenly falling ill on Monday night. The deceased, identified as Surendra Gamang, had been bringing people to the cyclone shelter on Monday, said Panchayat Samiti member Lokanath Dalai. The police were yet to confirm the cause of Gamang’s death. A report from Mohana in Gajapati district said a mud-walled house collapsed due to incessant rains, leaving one person injured. The tin roof of a house in the area was blown away in strong winds, an official said. Dr Manorama Mohanty, the director of Bhubaneswar Meteorological Centre, said, “The landfall of the severe cyclonic storm Montha has started about 7 pm and the process will continue for three to four hours.” During the landfall, the wind speed was 80 to 90 km per hour with gusting up to 110 kmph, Mohanty said. Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi reviewed the state’s preparation for the possible impact of the calamity that has already affected normal life across 15 districts in the coastal and southern regions of the state. He said that over 2,000 cyclone shelters were set up to shelter the affected people and the government has set the “Zero Casualty” goal. The CM said 153 rescue teams (over 6,000 personnel) comprising personnel of NDRF, ODRAF, and Fire Service are positioned at vulnerable places across the eight southern districts and responding to the situations. An official report said that as many as 1,871 pregnant women were shifted to various health centers since Monday, of whom 452 have given birth. The administration has already announced the closure of schools and anganwadi centres in nine districts till October 30, while East Coast Railway has announced cancellation, diversion, and short termination of some trains operating in the Waltair region and connected routes. The leave of government employees has also been cancelled till October 30. The administration has also sealed all sea beaches to prevent tourists and local people from entering the shores, Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) D K Singh said. A report from Puri said that a lifeguard was injured after he was allegedly assaulted by tourists at the beach on Tuesday when he prevented them from taking a bath in the sea in view of cyclone Montha. The tourist’s wife allegedly attacked the lifeguard with slippers for stopping them from entering the sea, police said. As the sea conditions remain rough to very rough, the state government has advised fishermen not to venture into the Bay of Bengal, along and off the Odisha coast, till October 29. A statement issued by the East Coast Railway said that as many as 61 trains were cancelled, two diverted, and five short-terminated/short-originated five trains, while eight others were rescheduled. The weather agency also suggested hoisting of local cautionary signal (LC-III) No-III at Gopalpur Port and Distant Warning Signal No-II (DW-II) at Paradip, Dhamra, Puri, Chhatrapur and Chandbali ports of Odisha. In a video message, Leader of the Opposition and former chief minister Naveen Patnaik urged people to cooperate with the administration in tackling cyclone ‘Montha’. “You know the storm Montha is coming. We have successfully faced many storms in the past. So don’t be afraid. Be alert. Give full cooperation to the administration. “My request to our BJD workers, brothers and sisters, is to be with the people in this time of crisis and help them. We have always been fighting various disasters together. This time too, let’s fight the storm together,” Patnaik said. PTI AAM NN

U.S. Military Strikes 4 Vessels In Pacific—Killing 14—In Expansion Of Anti-Drug Campaign

The U.S. military struck four suspected narcotics-trafficking vessels in the Pacific Monday, killing 14, in another major escalation of its campaign against drug cartels. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth attends a meeting between Australia's Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and US President Donald Trump in the Cabinet Room at the White House in Washington, DC, on October 20, 2025. (Photo by SAUL LOEB/AFP via Getty Images) AFP via Getty Images The U.S. military first struck two vessels carrying eight “narco-terrorists,” a second vessel carrying four and a third carrying three, as part of its increasingly controversial campaign against drug-trafficking, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth announced on X Tuesday. Hegseth said there was one survivor and no U.S. forces were harmed. The strikes are the second wave of attacks in the Pacific, building on a military campaign against suspected drug-trafficking vessels in the Caribbean that began in September. More than 50 people have died in the attacks. The attacks have generated growing bipartisan criticism, with members of Congress reporting the Trump administration has not provided enough evidence to justify the use of the U.S. military to deal with what’s typically a law enforcement issue, and experts questioning whether the Trump administration has the authority to conduct the strikes without congressional approval. Chief Critic Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., suggested what he referred to as “extrajudicial killings” were unconstitutional, telling Fox News on Sunday “a briefing is not enough to overcome the Constitution. The Constitution says that when you go to war, Congress has to vote on it.” This is a developing story and will be updated. Got a tip? Share confidential information with Forbes. Will Mastercard Stock Rise On Its Upcoming Earnings?

Photo Illustration by Mateusz Slodkowski/SOPA Images/LightRocket via Getty Images SOPA Images/LightRocket via Getty Images Mastercard (NYSE:MA) is scheduled to announce its earnings on Thursday, October 30, 2025. Revenue is projected to increase by approximately 16% year-over-year to reach $8.54 billion, according to consensus estimates, while earnings are expected to grow 11% to $4.32 per share. Revenue growth is likely to be driven by ongoing increases in gross dollar volume (GDV) – an essential metric of total spending across the Mastercard network — as global consumer expenditure remains robust. Additionally, cross-border volume is anticipated to remain strong, supported by a continued recovery in international travel and tourism, especially in Europe and Asia. Furthermore, Mastercard’s growing array of value-added services, including data analytics, cybersecurity, and fraud prevention, is expected to contribute to some revenue growth beyond core transaction fees. The company currently has a market capitalization of $500 billion. Over the past twelve months, it has generated revenue of $30 billion and has remained operationally profitable, with $18 billion in operating profits and a net income of $14 billion. While the outcome heavily relies on how the results compare to consensus expectations, recognizing historical trends may give event-driven traders an edge. There are two methods to achieve this: either by analyzing historical probabilities and positioning oneself before the earnings report is announced, or by studying the correlation between immediate and medium-term returns following the earnings release, and adjusting strategies accordingly afterward. That being said, if you're looking for upside with lower volatility compared to individual stocks, the Trefis High Quality portfolio offers a viable alternative — having surpassed the S&P 500 and yielding returns exceeding 105% since its creation. Mastercard’s Historical Probability of Positive Post-Earnings Return Here are some observations regarding one-day (1D) post-earnings returns: MORE FOR YOU Over the last five years, there are 20 recorded earnings data points, yielding 10 positive and 10 negative one-day (1D) returns. In summary, positive 1D returns have occurred approximately 50% of the time. However, this percentage decreases to 42% if we examine only the last 3 years instead of 5. The median of the 10 positive returns is 2.3%, while the median of the 10 negative returns is -1.8% Additional statistics for the observed 5-Day (5D) and 21-Day (21D) returns post earnings are compiled along with the accompanying statistics in the table below. 1D, 5D, and 21D Post Earnings Return Correlation Between 1D, 5D, and 21D Historical Returns A relatively low-risk strategy (though it becomes unhelpful if the correlation is weak) involves understanding the correlation between short-term and medium-term returns following earnings, identifying the pair with the highest correlation, and executing the appropriate trade. For instance, if 1D and 5D exhibit the highest correlation, a trader may decide to take a “long” position for the next 5 days if the 1D post-earnings return is positive. Here is some correlation data based on a 5-year and a more recent 3-year history. Please note that the correlation labeled 1D_5D indicates the correlation between 1D post-earnings returns and the subsequent 5D returns. Correlation Between 1D, 5D, and 21D Historical Returns Discover more about the Trefis RV strategy that has outperformed its all-cap stocks benchmark (a combination of all three: the S&P 500, S&P mid-cap, and Russell 2000), resulting in substantial returns for investors. Conversely, if you prefer potential upside with a steadier experience than an individual stock like Mastercard, consider the High Quality portfolio, which has outperformed the S&P and achieved returns greater than 105% since its inception.
