Denny Hamlin vs Mark Martin: NASCAR Drivers Give Their Take on the Greatest Driver to Never Win A Championship

Denny Hamlin is currently on the cusp of becoming a NASCAR Cup Series champion. The Joe Gibbs Racing driver won the South Point 400 in Las Vegas to secure a Championship 4 spot and is eagerly awaiting the season finale at the Phoenix Raceway. As things stand, he is widely regarded to be the best driver to never win a championship. But what do his fellow drivers think of him? Several NASCAR drivers were asked who the greatest driver to never win a championship was at Vegas recently, and most of their responses came out to be either Hamlin or the iconic Mark Martin. Christopher Bell, Austin Cindric, Kyle Larson, Josh Berry, Chase Briscoe, Ricky Stenhouse Jr., A.J. Allmendinger, and a few others were all uniform in this answer. Larson particularly noted, “I mean, I guess it would be between Denny [Hamlin] and Mark Martin, right? I didn’t get to compete with Mark a whole lot, you know? I wanna say Denny just because I see how good he is.” Briscoe reflected, “I mean, it’s gotta be either Mark or Denny. I didn’t get to race against Mark. So, it’s hard for me to really say. Denny is extremely good. So, one of those two. Flip a coin.” What do the numbers say? This close battle between Hamlin and Martin is the kind from which legends are made. It isn’t without reason that drivers find it difficult to decide who among them stands taller. Making his Cup Series debut in 2005, Hamlin has recorded 60 wins across 718 appearances so far. Martin, on the other hand, recorded 40 wins across 882 races spanning 31 years. Crown jewel wins are a key criterion by which NASCAR drivers are judged, and Hamlin holds the upper hand on this front as well. He has won the Daytona 500 and the Southern 500 three times each, and the Coca-Cola 600 once. Martin won the Southern 500 twice and the Coca-Cola 600 once. Notably, he also captured the Winston 500 in 1995 and 1997. Martin won the IROC championship five times — in 1994, 1996, 1997, 1998, and 2005 — an achievement Hamlin has yet to match. The debate over who is greater, Hamlin or Martin, has raged for years. But it could finally come to an end on November 2 in Phoenix, for Hamlin may no longer be the greatest driver to never win a championship.

Police Kill Three Terrorists Near Jenin

Tel Aviv [Israel], October 28 (ANI/TPS): Forces from the Israel Police’s Yamam Counterterrorism Unit killed three terrorists who were planning to carry out an attack near Jenin last (Sunday) night.This came during an offensive operation by the forces in Kafr Qud near Jenin to thwart a terrorist cell that was planning to carry out an attack and took part in organizing the terror in the Jenin camp.During the operation, the fighters identified the terrorist squad emerging from a cave. The unit’s snipers fired accurately, eliminating the three terrorists. Cyclone Montha: Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw reviews preparedness

New Delhi [India]/Aamravati (Andhra Pradesh), October 28 (ANI) Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Tuesday directed railways to take precautionary measures in anticipation of Cyclone Montha’s impact on the East Coast, particularly in Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, and Telangana. Vaishnaw has directed all officials of East Coast Railway (ECoR) and South-Central Railway (SCR) zones to remain on high alert and to take proactive steps for the quick restoration of train services following the impact of severe cyclonic storm Montha’, which is expected to cross the Andhra Pradesh coast between Machilipatnam and Kalingapatnam near Kakinada.The Railway Minister reviewed ongoing measures for passenger safety, train regulation, restoration planning, and coordination with local administrations and disaster management authorities.Among the key actions that the Union Minister has directed are the activation of divisional war rooms and the readying of essential materials, machinery, and manpower, especially in the Vijayawada, Visakhapatnam, and Guntur divisions.Vaishnaw directed that monitoring of train operations be intensified to minimise passenger inconvenience. He directed officials to mobilise resources for emergency response and take necessary precautions.Meanwhile, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu reviewed the impact of Cyclone Montha on the state from the Real-Time Governance System (RTGS) RTGS control room.Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan, Ministers Nara Lokesh, V. Anitha, and P Narayana, Chief Secretary Neerabh Kumar Prasad (CS), and officials from various departments participated in the review meeting.As per an update by the IMD, the Severe Cyclonic Storm Montha over westcentral Bay of Bengal moved north-northwestwards with a speed of 10 kmph and lay centered at 1.30 pm today over the same region about 100 km south-southeast of Machilipatnam (Andhra Pradesh), 180 km south-southeast of Kakinada (Andhra Pradesh), 270 km south-southwest of Visakhapatnam (Andhra Pradesh) and 500 km south-southwest of Gopalpur (Odisha).The weather department said that the Severe Cyclonic Storm with wind speed of 90-100 kmph gusting to 110 kmph It will continue to move north-northwestwards and cross Andhra Pradesh coast between Machilipatnam and Kalingapatnam around Kakinada during the evening and night of October 28 as a severe cyclonic storm with a maximum sustained wind speed of 90-100 kmph gusting to 110 kmph.In view of Cyclone Montha, forming over the central Bay of Bengal, the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has pre-deployed 25 teams across the likely-affected coastal districts of Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, Tamil Nadu, Chhattisgarh, and Puducherry. A total of 20 additional teams are kept on standby at strategic locations for immediate deployment, if required. Each team is equipped with boats, cutting equipment, communication eqpt, and other specialised rescue tools to carry out evacuation, relief, and restoration operations.Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, in the presence of Minister of Revenue and Disaster Management Suresh Pujari, chaired a high-level meeting at Lok Seva Bhavan in Bhubaneswar today to assess the state’s preparedness for the impending cyclone Montha.Odisha Chief Secretary Manoj Ahuja, SRC D. Reflecting on Year 1: NSL builds professional women’s soccer in Canada

As teams from Canada’s first professional women’s soccer league head into the playoffs, its founder reflects on the inaugural season. The Northern Super League (NSL) comprises six teams: Vancouver Rise FC, Calgary Wild FC, Halifax Tides FC, Montréal Roses, Ottawa Rapid FC, and AFC Toronto. The inaugural season kicked off in April 2025 at BC Place. Diana Matheson, Northern Super League founder and former professional soccer player, said they are exactly where they want to be after Year 1 and that they have a lot to be proud of. “From what we can benchmark against other leagues, in revenues, attendance, viewership, and player salaries, we’re already where we want to be in terms of fourth to eighth in the world in Year 1,” Matheson said. “There is still a lot to do; it’s still a startup, tons to build, but for Year 1 benchmarks, we’re really proud of what we’ve done this year.” The first league match was played at BC Place in Vancouver on April 16, 2025, in front of 14,018 fans. The Vancouver Rise FC defeated the Calgary Wild FC 1-0. Matheson said she felt a wave of relief wash over her before the start of that first match. There had been a lot of stress and uncertainty in the three years leading up to that day, so there were a lot of feelings when stepping on the field with Christine Sinclair for a ceremony before the match started. It all became real and was no longer just a hypothetical. Matheson could feel the energy and excitement of everyone in the stands. The league’s fan reception across the country this season has been excellent, and Vancouver Rise FC fans were no exception. “Vancouver has always had a pretty high bar, knowing the women’s soccer and soccer history in this city, and they’ve delivered,” she said. The vibes at Burnaby’s Swangard Stadium during matches are “fantastic,” Matheson said. Matheson has heard from countless young girls and parents about the league’s impact on them. Many have shared that they have decided to stay in Canada to continue playing, rather than attend a university in the States, because of the NSL. One of the challenges the league faced in its first year was scheduling. She knew they would face challenges in the NSL’s first season, especially given the “lack of sport and soccer infrastructure in Canada” and its impact on multiple aspects, including the need to share stadiums. “Making the schedule in our league is just such a challenge because we’re second, third, fourth tenant, and what a big impact that had on everything, even maybe more than we thought,” she said. For instance, Rise FC is the third tenant at Swangard Stadium, and its impact is evident in the scheduling of matches. “The fact that the first leg of the semifinals for Vancouver is on a Tuesday (Nov. 4), that is not priority one,” Matheson said. “We couldn’t secure weekend dates in Vancouver and in Ottawa, we couldn’t secure a Sunday, so literally, worst-case scenario in terms of those two teams having to do the travel and the turnaround, not the priority, but it was because we’re a new league, we didn’t have priorities of venues.” As a new league, they hope to build on the partnerships they have with the facilities they use. “Swangard, in the city of Burnaby, is a great example,” she said. “Not everyone knew what we were going to be. We were pretty clear on what we were going to be, but how is anyone else supposed to know until you see it? “I think after this year, you can see what the Rise did in that stadium with the community. I think there’s going to be really strong conversations going on next year with the City of Burnaby and that stadium to make sure we can get that consistency of schedule.” There is still more work to be done, Matheson said. “We’ve got a job to do, to invest in building more soccer infrastructure in Canada so we can move the needle across Canada and venues,” she said. “The ideal would be to have consistency of game time, of game day, and even more so, to have the right sized venues, control all the revenues in those stadiums, which we just simply don’t have, and we won’t have until we start to build more soccer infrastructure in Canada.” In early September, the league announced it was seeking to add a new team for the 2027 season. Matheson told Black Press Media Friday (Oct. 24) that there has been significant interest so far for the next club from potential investors or owners in Canada and internationally. “There has especially been a lot of international interest,” she said. “Folks looking at Canada, rightfully, as a leader in women’s sport, and it is a strength that we’re an independent league where every dollar we get to make the decision that’s best for the growth of women’s football. “That’s not the case for most women’s leagues around the world. They’re still very tied to men’s football and men’s football owners, so we’re very well positioned for growth in Canada, in a country with one of the best women’s sports markets, whether that be player pool or fans.” When considering where to expand, the league is looking at cities that want to help grow the league. “We’re already very proactively looking at target markets and having conversations with those cities and those provinces to make sure wherever we go, there are the people in place who are going to help us either invest in existing infrastructure to make sure it’s ready to go in Year 1 for women’s soccer, or look to build as well.”

Meanwhile, her utility will pay her for the electrons she exports to the grid, which could earn about $400 a year, on one of the better tariffs of 4 cents. That additional money could drastically shorten the amount of time it takes for the installation to pay itself off.

Cabinet approves terms of reference of 8th Pay Commission for 50 lakh central govt employees

The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Tuesday approved the terms of reference of 8th Central Pay Commission. The Commission's recommendation will cover nearly 50 lakh central government employees, including Defence Services Personnel, and nearly 69 lakh pensioners.The 8th Central Pay Commission will be a temporary body and will make its recommendations within 18 months of the date of its constitution. The Commission will comprise of one chairperson, one Member (Part Time) and one Member-Secretary. It may consider, if necessary, sending interim reports on any of the matters as and when the recommendations are finalised.While making the recommendations, the Commission will keep in view the following:Live Eventsi. Keep the tricks friendly and treats sweet: Vernon RCMP, fire department

Officials are sending out a spooktacular safety reminder as Halloween creeps closer. With little ghosts, goblins, and mini superheroes preparing to flood neighbourhoods in search of sweet treasures, police are urging everyone to help keep the scares fun and not dangerous. “Halloween should be full of fun and fright and not real fear,” said Const. Chris Terleski, media relations officer for the Vernon North Okanagan RCMP. “A little extra care and caution will help make sure everyone’s night is spooky and scary in the right ways.” Vernon Fire Rescue Services (VFRS) is also sharing tips to help make this Halloween safe and fun. Stay visible “With earlier sunsets, visibility is crucial,” VFRS urges. • Include reflective materials in costumes or carry a glow stick or flashlight so drivers can see you clearly while trick-or-treating. • Lighter-coloured costumes improve visibility. • Ensure costumes allow easy movement to avoid trips and falls. “Light up the night!” RCMP add. “Wear bright or reflective costumes and carry a flashlight or glow stick to light your way.” • Use sidewalks and crosswalks—never dart between parked cars. • Make sure masks or accessories don’t block your vision. • Travel in groups and stay on familiar, well-lit streets. • Save the snacking until your treats have been checked by an adult. Fire safety tips “Keep your home safe while decorating.” • Use battery-operated candles or glow sticks instead of open flames in jack-o’-lanterns. • Keep exits clear of decorations and regularly check smoke alarms. • Ensure decorations are away from heat sources such as light bulbs or heaters. VFRS reminds residents that fireworks and sky lanterns are prohibited within City of Vernon limits. Violating the ban can result in fines up to $300, with repeated offences subject to additional penalties. Fire Prevention and Bylaw Enforcement will be actively monitoring neighbourhoods to ensure compliance. “Consider safe alternatives to keep the Halloween spirit alive: movie nights, glow sticks, flameless candles, bylaw-compliant campfires, or festive noise makers,” VFRS said. “Let’s work together to keep Vernon safe and spooky this Halloween!” RCMP safety tips for parents and guardians: • Go over safety rules before heading out. • Map out a safe trick-or-treating route before heading out. • Accompany young children while they trick-or-treat. • Check all candy before it’s eaten—if it looks spooky, toss it out. • Make sure costumes fit properly to prevent trips and tumbles. Flood-prone Napa property once proposed for luxury glamping resort hits the market for $5.9 million

A flood-prone Napa property once eyed for a controversial luxury glamping resort is now on the market. The 12.5-acre site — located west of Silverado Trail between Stonecrest Drive and Hagen Road, along Milliken Creek — is listed for $5.9 million, according to multiple online postings first published Sept. 29. A for-sale sign is also visible from the road. The owner, Parry Mead Murray, did not respond to a request for comment. The land has been in the Mead family for more than 50 years, but building there has always been a challenge. Much of it lies in a floodplain — an area at high risk of flooding during major storms — which limits what can be developed. Still, the city’s Planning Commission approved plans in 2018 to divide the land into four home lots, a plan that remains valid after several extensions, most recently in July 2024. The property is better known as the proposed site for The Grange Campground, a high-end glamping resort that AutoCamp, based in Santa Barbara, wanted to build. Civil engineer Jeremy Sill, part of that team, said the housing project never moved in part due to the challenges with flood protections. Developers first asked the city in 2021 to change the property’s zoning rules to allow more homes. The city’s planning commission rejected that because of the site’s environmental constraints. The following year, the group floated a new idea: pairing a few homes with a luxury campground to make the project more profitable. By 2024, that idea had turned into a full resort with up to 100 tents, trailers and yurts, along with five permanent buildings. The team said those units could be moved during flood season or if an evacuation was needed. The plan set off heated debate. Neighbors worried about wildfire risk, traffic and the idea of a commercial business in a residential neighborhood. A change.org petition against the project drew 1,331 signatures. Supporters — including some business owners — argued the resort would bring new visitors and tax revenue to Napa. After the city’s planning commission recommended approval in October 2024, the City Council voted 2-3 against it in February, then reaffirmed that decision a month later. Council member Mary Luros said the project still felt “like a hotel” and was “too commercial” for the neighborhood. Opponents, led by Brian Bennett and Justin Newberry, celebrated the outcome online. In an April post, they said AutoCamp had walked away from the plan, though the company hasn’t confirmed that. For now, the land once pitched for luxury glamping sits quiet again — and up for sale.

First cloud-seeding trial conducted in parts of Delhi

New Delhi, Oct 28 (PTI) The first cloud-seeding trial have been conducted in parts of Delhi, including Burari and Karol Bagh areas, officials said on Tuesday. According to the officials, the aircraft took off from Kanpur for Delhi conducted the exercise. The trial, aimed at inducing artificial rain to tackle air pollution in the capital, is part of the Delhi government’s broader strategy to mitigate deteriorating air quality during the winter months. The government had conducted a test flight over Burari last week. During the test run, small quantities of silver iodide and sodium chloride compounds used to trigger artificial rain were released from the aircraft. Projektligji është produkt i një grupi pune të ngritur me urdhër të kryeministrit Edi Rama në korrik të këtij viti dhe drafti është propozuar nga ministrja e Shtetit për Administratën Publike dhe Antikorrupsionin, Adea Pirdeni. Drafti përmban 32 nene dhe parashikon Komisionerin për të Drejtën e Informimit dhe Mbrojtjen e të Dhënave Personale si institucionin përgjegjës për regjistrin e lobuesve dhe aktivitetet e lidhura me ta. Në relacionin që shoqëron projektligjin premtohet transparencë dhe llogaridhënie. Por ligji në vetvete propozon fshehjen e të dhënave thelbësore për transparencën, përfshi fitimet e lobuesve dhe shpenzimet e tyre. According to Variety, the film will chronicle Doyle’s involvement in defending George Edalji, a British-Indian lawyer wrongfully convicted of animal mutilation, and Oscar Slater, another victim of judicial prejudice. Through these true events, the narrative will mirror the way Doyle’s analytical mind blurred the boundaries between fiction and reality. Cyclone Montha: Why Bay Of Bengal Breeds The Deadliest Storms | Explained

A new cyclonic storm, named Montha, has developed over the west-central Bay of Bengal, marking the first such system of the year. Initially weak, the storm is expected to intensify rapidly as it tracks towards the Andhra Pradesh coast, where it could make landfall as a severe cyclonic storm with wind speeds touching 90-100 kmph, and possibly peaking at 110 kmph, according to early forecasts. The Bay of Bengal, long known as one of the world’s most active breeding grounds for tropical cyclones, continues to dominate the subcontinent’s storm activity. In the past five years alone, 12 cyclonic storms have formed over the bay, most of them classified as severe. Montha is the 13th such storm since 2020. Historical data underscores the Bay of Bengal’s vulnerability to cyclonic disturbances. Between 1891 and 2019, 522 storms originated here, according to data compiled by AI Perplexity. On average, 2-3 cyclones form in the bay each year. Together, the Bay of Bengal and the Arabian Sea account for nearly 7% of global cyclonic activity. Of the 522 recorded systems, 234 were categorised as deadly, striking the eastern Indian coast with devastating force. The contrast between the two adjoining seas is stark. While 86% of cyclonic storms originate in the Bay of Bengal, only 14% are born in the Arabian Sea. Similarly, 77% of severe cyclones occur in the Bay of Bengal, as against 23% in the Arabian Sea. The difference, meteorologists say, lies in temperature and geography. The Bay of Bengal’s waters are warmer, creating ideal conditions for low-pressure systems to evolve into cyclones. The Arabian Sea, being relatively cooler, spawns fewer and weaker storms. Eastern Coast Most Vulnerable Among states, Odisha remains the most cyclone-prone, accounting for nearly half of all storms striking the eastern coast, followed by Andhra Pradesh (22%), West Bengal (18.5%) and Tamil Nadu (11.5%). The eastern coastline’s flat terrain makes it particularly susceptible, as storms encounter little resistance after landfall. In contrast, the western coast’s geography often causes systems to deflect or weaken before impact. Data from the National Cyclone Risk Mitigation Project reveals that between 1891 and 2000, 308 cyclones hit the eastern seaboard, compared to just 48 along the western coast, an eightfold difference. A Record Of Deadly Storms Some of the most devastating cyclones in recorded history have originated in the Bay of Bengal. The Bhola cyclone of 1970 in present-day Bangladesh killed an estimated 3-5 lakh people, making it one of the deadliest natural disasters ever. In recent years, storms such as Fani (2019), Amphan (2020), and Mocha (2023) have caused widespread destruction across eastern India, Myanmar, and Bangladesh, with wind speeds exceeding 270 kmph in some cases. By comparison, cyclones from the Arabian Sea, such as Tauktae in 2021, though powerful, tend to curve northwestward, often missing India’s western coast. Why The Bay Of Bengal Breeds So Many Storms The Bay’s unique location and climatic conditions make it a constant theatre for cyclonic activity. Warm sea surface temperatures, abundant moisture, and the inflow of winds from the Pacific via the South China Sea all combine to create a volatile environment. Roughly 65% of the region’s storms occur between September and December, the peak cyclone season. Cyclones forming in the northern Bay of Bengal typically move northwest, bringing heavy rainfall to the Indo-Gangetic plains and sometimes reaching as far as northern India. The direction of their spin also differs depending on hemisphere; storms around the Indian subcontinent rotate clockwise, while those near the North Pole move counterclockwise. Despite advances in meteorology, scientists say there is currently no viable technology to prevent or neutralise cyclones. A single mature storm can release energy equivalent to several thousand nuclear bombs. Human intervention, therefore, remains impossible. Authorities instead focus on preparedness and mitigation, issuing early warnings, fortifying coastal infrastructure, and ensuring rapid evacuation and relief efforts.
