Yamuna can be cleaned — it just needs a plan and action with a difference: CSE

Even as the Yamuna forces its way back in this festive season into the pollution debates swirling in Delhi-NCR, Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) has reminded the capital’s people and decision-makers that it is not impossible to clean the river.“The problem of cleaning the Yamuna is not a new one; huge amounts of money have been spent to do this over the years. We must realise that cleaning the Yamuna will require much more than money. It will need a reworked plan which will guide us towards thinking and acting differently,” CSE director general Sunita Narain said in a statement released by the Delhi-based think tank.In the four years between 2017 and 2022, the Delhi government spent more than Rs 6,856 crore on cleaning the Yamuna. Delhi now has 37 sewage treatment plants with a capacity to treat over 80-100 per cent of the generated sewage, and almost 80 per cent of the city is connected to sewer lines. In spite of all this, the river continues to run polluted and unclean.The 22-km stretch of the Yamuna in Delhi, barely 2 per cent of the total length of the river basin, contributes over 80 per cent of the pollution load in the entire river. There is no water in the river for almost nine months in a year — what flows in it is just sewage and waste from Delhi’s 22 drains.“In fact, the Yamuna ceases to exist after it enters Delhi at Wazirabad,” says Subrata Chakraborty, programme director, water, CSE.A recently released assessment by CSE — Yamuna: The Agenda for Cleaning the River — has tried to unravel the puzzle; it also offers what Narain says: a plan that can enable us to think and act differently. Why is the Yamuna polluted?The CSE report identifies a few key reasons behind this state of affairs.First, there is a lack of data on wastewater generation. Narain says that “we do not know how much wastewater is generated by Delhi” — as there is no clear data on Delhi’s population in the absence of a regular census or on the amount of ‘unofficial’ water (groundwater and water supplied by tankers) residents use.Second, vast areas in Delhi depend on desludging tankers for removing their excreta and these tankers then discharge into the river or into drains. The current plan does not prioritise 100 per cent interception from tankers and on ensuring that this is then taken to STPs for treatment and reuse.The third reason is the mixing of treated and untreated sewage in Delhi’s drains. Delhi has 22 drains that are supposed to carry treated, clean water back into the Yamuna. But untreated sewage also flows into these same drains through unsewered colonies or tankers that transport faecal sludge and wastewater — as a result, the entire effort of treating the wastewater is negated. What has Delhi done about it till now?CSE noted that successive central and Delhi governments and the courts have been focused on finding solutions to the problem, which was commendable.For instance, Delhi’s 37 STPs can treat over 84 per cent of the generated sewage. According to the Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC), almost 80 per cent of the generated sewage is being treated. The focus is now on improving the capacity of existing STPs and building new plants to meet future demand.More stringent standards have been introduced since the STPs in Delhi came into operation: the norm now is 10 mg/l, compared to the national standard of 30 mg/l. According to a 2024 DPCC report, 23 of Delhi’s 37 STPs are not meeting the effluent discharge standard. This means existing plants have to be upgraded and refurbished at additional cost.The Delhi government’s Interceptor Sewer Project aims to trap 1,000 million litre per day of sewage from the city’s drains and divert it for treatment.Over 1,000 sewerage lines have been laid, says the DPCC; the remaining are in various stages of completion.Delhi has 28 “approved” industrial areas — effluents from 17 of these are treated in common effluent treatment plants. But the quality of treatment is a matter of concern, says the CSE report; it is also unclear where the treated effluents are discharged. What more can be done?The CSE report recommends a five-point action agenda for the future.All faecal sludge must be collected from non-sewered areas and treated. Areas not connected to sewer lines are served by desludging tankers and this should be part of the agenda for a clean Yamuna. The state does not have to invest in building and refurbishing costly sewage pipelines — the strategy for faecal sludge management through tankers is faster and more cost-effective. The key step is to ensure that all desludging tankers are registered, and their movement is monitored so that all septage is taken to treatment plants, according to the think tank.Treated water should not be discharged into drains, where it gets mixed with untreated wastewater, the CSE statement noted. As STPs are not located near the river, treated wastewater from these plants is discharged into the same drains, which are already polluted with untreated wastewater. This ‘mixing’ negates the impact on pollution control and the money spent on treatment goes waste. Each STP must plan for how it will not just treat, but also how it will discharge treated effluents.As per CSE, full utilisation of the treated wastewater must be ensured so that they do not add to the pollution load. Currently, only 331-473 million litres per day is reused — this is between 10-14 per cent of the treated wastewater. Each STP needs a plan not only for treatment but for how it is discharging its treated wastewater. “Otherwise, we are cleaning and then wasting,” the statement observed.The think tank urged the upgradation of STPs based on reuse of treated water plan. “Delhi effluent standards are more stringent than the rest of the country but this is because they are designed for discharge into the river, which has no assimilative capacity. Huge investment is needed to refurbish the current STPs to meet the standards. The standards need to be designed for reuse.”Finally, it called rework the plan for two drains — Najafgarh and Shahdara—- that contribute 84 per cent of the pollution load into the river. “The interceptor drain plan is not working for these two drains; despite investment, pollution is increasing. Delhi needs to rework and focus on drains that contribute bulk of pollution into the river,” the statement noted. “The agenda for cleaning the river is critical as a ‘dead Yamuna’ is not just a matter of shame for the city and for us — it also adds to the burden of providing clean water to Delhi as well as to the cities downstream,” said Narain.To download the CSE report on Yamuna (in Hindi and English), click here

Selling returns to bourse, KSE-100 loses over 1,700 points

After a positive start, selling pressure returned to the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX), with the benchmark KSE-100 Index settling with a loss of over 1,700 points on Thursday. The market kicked off trading on a positive note, with the benchmark KSE-100 hitting an intra-day high of 159,507.41. However, the market resorted to profit booking in the later hours, dragging the index to an intra-day low of 156,327.60. At close, the benchmark index was hovering at 156,732.87, a decrease of 1,732.18 points or 1.09%. On Wednesday, the PSX witnessed sustained selling pressure as investors continued to offload positions amid rollover anxiety and weak institutional participation. The benchmark KSE-100 Index dropped 1,635.97 points, or 1.02%, to close at 158,465.06. Internationally, Asian stocks advanced on Thursday after the Federal Reserve cut interest rates and as US and Chinese leaders met to thrash out a trade deal, while the yen weakened after the Bank of Japan kept rates on hold as expected. MSCI’s broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan was last up 0.4%, while US S&P 500 e-mini futures moved 0.4% higher after stocks on Wall Street posted a slim loss to snap a four-day winning streak. Global markets are in the midst of a string of central bank decisions that will give clues about the path ahead for interest rates as the Trump administration imposes blanket tariffs on foreign imports. The Nikkei 225 fluctuated between gains and losses and was last 0.2% higher after the Bank of Japan’s decision. Though it stood pat on rates, it repeated its pledge to continue increasing borrowing costs if the economy moves in line with its projections. US President Donald Trump is currently meeting Chinese leader Xi Jinping in South Korea. US negotiators have signalled they seek a return to a fragile trade war truce, but tensions remain high and longer-term economic irritants will likely persist between the geopolitical rivals. The Federal Reserve cut interest rates on Wednesday by a quarter of a percentage point as expected. Traders have slashed their forecasts of a 25-basis-point rate cut from the US central bank in December, which had been viewed as a near-certainty earlier.

National table tennis team to compete at Islamic Solidarity Games

The table tennis players who will represent Azerbaijan at the 6th Islamic Solidarity Games in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, have been announced, Azernews reports. Azerbaijan will be represented by six athletes in the competition. The team consists of Marziya Nurmatova, Zemfira Mikayilova, Aylin Asgarova, Onur Guluzade, Hilal Hasanov, and Adil Ahmadzade. The team is currently in a training camp at the "Shua Sports Complex" in preparation for the competition. They will depart for Saudi Arabia on November 6. The table tennis events will take place from November 8 to 13. The 2025 Islamic Solidarity Games are set to take place on November 7-21 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, marking the sixth edition of this multi-sport event for athletes from countries that are members of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC). Approximately 3,500 athletes from 57 countries will compete in the 2025 Islamic Solidarity Games The event is expected to feature a wide array of sports, with athletes from across the Muslim world competing to promote solidarity and cultural exchange through sports?. Resident Evil Requiem pre-orders live as Switch Controller and amiibo revealed

Oh that’s such an obvious fake… wait, it’s real? (Capcom/YouTube) A new Capcom video has shared pre-order details for Resident Evil Requiem as leaks continue to insist Leon’s in the game. Resident Evil Requiem is scheduled to launch on February 27, 2026 and pre-orders have just gone live, as Capcom releases a new promo video called Road to Requiem. There’s no new gameplay or story details (and certainly no confirmation of those Leon rumours), but Capcom has unveiled a deluxe edition of the game and, more surprisingly, more Nintendo Switch 2 support. A Switch 2 port of Resident Evil Requiem (as well as Resident Evil 7 and Resident Evil Village) had already been announced, but Capcom and Nintendo are also partnering on a new amiibo figure and a Switch 2 Pro controller. Images of the pre-order bonuses, but not the Pro Controller, leaked yesterday but many, including us, dismissed them as fakes. Although it all looks a bit more professional when you see them in the video. The controller will launch the same day as Resident Evil Requiem but the amiibo won’t be out until the summer. It’ll be of new protagonist Grace Ashcroft, with no word as to whether any of the other regular crew will get one. Although given how many games are coming to Switch 2 (and the fact they were all spirits in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate) does seem a possibility. Nintendo has partnered with third party companies on amiibo before (including Capcom), but amiibo for adult-rated franchises like Resident Evil are rare. The only other example that comes to the mind is the Dark Souls amiibo from 2018 – although technically Bayonetta is 18 rated and not made by Nintendo. What is included in Resident Evil Requiem deluxe edition? The deluxe edition of Resident Evil Requiem will set you back £74.99 on consoles and £69.99 on PC, and comes with four weapon skins, two weapon charms, two optional screen filters, and an audio pack. There’s also five additional costumes for Grace, including one based on the iconic Lady Dimitrescu (the game has both first and third person views). Pre-orders for both the deluxe and standard editions also throw in an apocalypse themed costume, though we’re not sure if it’s meant to be an overt reference to the 2004 Resident Evil: Apocalypse movie or not. Switch 2 owners have the option to purchase a Resident Evil Generation pack, which bundles Requiem with Resident Evil 7 and Resident Evil Village alongside all their post-launch DLC. For whatever reason, though, the pack will only be available until the end of March 31, 2026. If you buy the game through the Epic Games Store, you’ll also get a Grace outfit for Fortnite, although it won’t be available till after Requiem’s launch. Lots of new announcements but still no Leon (Capcom) Is Leon in Resident Evil Requiem? There remain a lot of questions about Resident Evil Requiem, although the big one is whether or not fan favourite protagonist Leon (or any of the other regulars) will make an appearance. Leon has been rumoured multiple times but there’s never been any evidence that he’s in the game. Even talk of him accidentally being referenced on the Portuguese PlayStation store seems to be a fake. In a screenshot spotted and shared by regular Resident Evil insider Dusk Golem (who has repeatedly insisted Leon is in the game), the store page mentions that the deluxe edition includes an alternate costume for Leon. However, a Brazilian YouTuber, Moni, has suggested this is fake and someone had just edited the webpage, demonstrating how on a livestream by editing Requiem’s Steam listing to add the same line about a Leon costume. If Leon really is in the game, he’s either a surprise inclusion Capcom doesn’t want to spoil (Dusk Golem’s claims at least one portion of first person gameplay shown so far is from Leon’s perspective) or a big reveal is being saved for an upcoming Resident Evil Requiem showcase Capcom has planned. No exact date for the showcase has been given, with Capcom only saying it’ll take place in early 2026. Love Is Blind star shocks cast with surprise baby reveal at reunion

A Love Is Blind season 9 contestant has revealed that she had given birth to a baby boy after the show wrapped up filming. Megan Walerius returned to the reunion episode with the news that she became a mother two and a half months ago after she met her new partner Paul outside of the show. The two had met after filming ended and she broke off her engagement with single father Jordan Keltner whom she had connected with on the show. The popular reality dating series sees 10 men and 10 women get to know each other and then get engaged without being able to see what their partners looked like. They have the option to take the relationship to the altar where they have either get married or walk away. Walerius connected early on in the pods with Keltner and the two bonded over his five-year-old son Luca’s Type 1 diabetes diagnosis, which Walerius’s late father also suffered from. However, their relationship faltered after filming moved into the real world due to differences in lifestyle, and Walerius ended the engagement before they made it to the altar. Towards the end, Walerius admitted that she hadn’t understood what it would mean to become a parent, and questioned whether she was ready to be one. “I don’t think I thought through how challenging it is and how I would need to make a lot of concessions to how I currently live. Honestly, this has me questioning if I’m even cut out to be a mom. I don’t know, maybe I am too caught up in my own life,” Walerius said on the show in a confessional. The reality star, 35, who introduced herself in the show as “Sparkle Megan”, told hosts Nick and Vanessa Lachey that she had “a little bit of a surprise” in the reunion episode that aired on 30 October. “I am a mom now. I had a baby boy 2-and-a-half months ago,” she said, adding that her son’s name is Brooks. “I have a little boy and he is my whole world. And, you know, I now know more than ever I was meant on this Earth to be a mom, and he’s amazing. Our family’s very happy.” Walerius shared that she met Paul through a mutual friend three months after the season wrapped filming in April last year, and that she became pregnant three months into dating. “We definitely had our ups and downs. United States President Donald Trump ordered the US military on Thursday to immediately resume testing nuclear weapons after a gap of 33 years, minutes before beginning a meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping. Trump made the surprise announcement on Truth Social while he was aboard his Marine One helicopter flying to meet Xi for a trade negotiating session in Busan, South Korea. He said he was instructing the Pentagon to test the US nuclear arsenal on an “equal basis” with other nuclear powers. “Because of other countries’ testing programs, I have instructed the Department of War to start testing our nuclear weapons on an equal basis. That process will begin immediately,” Trump wrote in a social media post. “Russia is second, and China is a distant third, but will be even within 5 years.” The move comes after Russian President Vladimir Putin said yesterday that Moscow had successfully tested a nuclear-capable underwater drone, in defiance of Washington’s warnings. Exploitation, racism, bullying, harassment, discrimination, and many other forms of abuse and disrespect. Ms McCarthy finished by saying if removing the power from employers to exploit migrant workers by moving to a common certificate of sponsorship, then we should all be supporting these efforts. If not for these workers, do it for the care they provide for our families, friends, and neighbours.

Rupee tumbles 48 paise to close at 88.70 against US dollar

The rupee depreciated 48 paise to close at 88.70 (provisional) against the American currency on Thursday on a strong US dollar, weak domestic markets, and a hawkish US Fed. Forex traders said the US Federal Reserve slashed interest rates by 25 bps in its Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting. However, Fed Chair Jerome Powell's commentary was hawkish, trimming rate-cut expectations for December. Moreover, month-end dollar demand from Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) and foreign fund outflows may also weigh on the rupee. At the interbank foreign exchange market, the rupee opened at 88.37, and later fell to an intra-day low of 88.74. The local unit finally settled at 88.70 (provisional) against the greenback, registering a loss of 48 paise from its previous close. On Wednesday, the rupee appreciated seven paise to close at 88.22 against the US dollar. "We expect the rupee to trade with a slight negative bias on a strong US dollar, weak domestic markets and a hawkish Fed. Month-end dollar demand from OMCs may also weigh on the rupee," said Anuj Choudhary, Research Analyst, Currency and Commodities, Mirae Asset ShareKhan. The US Fed cut rates by 25 bps, as expected. However, Fed Chair Jerome Powell said the December cut was not a foregone conclusion, given inflation remains above target and labour-market uncertainties persist. Following Powell's remarks, market expectations of a December rate cut fell sharply, prompting a rise in US Treasury yields and a stronger dollar, traders said. Choudhary further noted that the weakness in crude oil prices may support the rupee at lower levels. "The USDINR spot price is expected to trade in a range of 88.45 to 89," he said. Meanwhile, the dollar index, which gauges the greenback's strength against a basket of six currencies, fell 0.09 per cent to 99.12. Brent crude, the global oil benchmark, fell 0.65 per cent to $64.50 per barrel in futures trading. On the domestic equity markets front, the Sensex tanked 592.67 points to settle at 84,404.46, while the Nifty dropped 176.05 points to 25,877.85.
