Liverpool fans love Virgil van Dijk's response to Trent Alexander-Arnold question

Liverpool fans were loving Virgil van Dijk 's blunt response when he was quizzed about Trent Alexander-Arnold 's return after the former Red was booed by the Anfield crowd. Alexander-Arnold made his first return to Anfield just months after deciding to leave Merseyside. Having come through the academy the right-back chose to run down his contract and leave for Real Madrid back in the summer. His decision proved hugely divisive and a number of Liverpool fans were angered by his departure. The club were unable to recoup any fee for their right-back and prior to Tuesday's clash he had his mural defaced with the anger still front and centre among some supporters. Alexander-Arnold began the night on the bench and was bought on for the final 10 minutes. Loud boos were heard when he was introduced into the contest and his every touch was met by jeers - but former team-mate Van Dijk had no plans to speak to him after. Theo Walcott was a pundit on Prime Video and asked: “Have you had a chance to speak to Trent? Lots of talk about the conditions he was playing in tonight, do you have any plans to see him after the game?” The centre-back replied by simply saying: “No.” His response was well met by his own supporters. One fan said: “This whole interview is cinema”. Another lapped up the Dutchman as he said: “I love my skipper.” That was echoed by another fan: "That's my CB man". Despite the obvious hostility Jude Bellingham , who is thought to have sold the idea of moving to Real to Alexander-Arnold, claimed that the jeers weren't a reflection of how the Liverpool fans felt about their former player. "Obviously, it is one of those things in football,” the midfielder told Amazon Prime. “The fans booing isn't a reflection of how they feel about him. I think it is more to give their team the edge and throw him off a little bit. I am sure they're appreciative of what he has done for the club. It is one of those things." Reds boss Arne Slot came together with his former player post-match and showed that there was no ill-feeling among the pair. He said: "Only short afterwards, I gave him a hug. I don't even exactly know what I said but probably not a lot. But every time I will meet him, I will either give him a hug or talk to him because he has been very special to me as a player and as a human being." 'As Long As I Play...': Novak Djokovic Moved To Tear Following Nikola Pilic Tribute | Watch

Novak Djokovic was moved to tears following his second-round victory at the Hellenic Championship in Athens on Tuesday after tournament organisers played a tribute video to his former coach, Nikola Pilic, who died in September at the age of 86. Djokovic, who joined Pilic’s academy in Germany at the age of 12, was visibly moved during the video, which was played after the 24-time Grand Slam champion defeated Alejandro Tabilo 7-6(3) 6-1. In his playing days, Croatian Pilic was a runner-up at the French Open in 1973. After transitioning to coaching, he led Germany to three Davis Cup titles between 1988 and 1993. ? As long as I play tennis and as long as I live, I’ll celebrate his name,” he added. Djokovic, who has won 100 ATP titles, said he would keep Pilic’s legacy alive. “This was one way to pay tribute, and I’m sure in the future people will learn about how Niki has impacted the world of tennis and the world of sport. He deserves it. He was a special man,” the former World No.1 said.

Diversity of Jewish experience highlights film fest

For today’s opening of the 37th Boston Jewish Film Festival. Artistic Director Joey Katz has spent the past year viewing, booking and refining the films, docs and events that make it all work year after year. “This year,” Katz began, “our Festival highlights the diversity of the Jewish experience, featuring films about the power of activism, history, and the many ways one can have an impact on community, culture, and politics. “We continue to highlight inclusive and diverse stories of people with disabilities, queer identity and social justice. Along with thrilling dramas and raucous comedies!” This 37th edition runs Nov. 5-16 in theaters and is virtual Nov. 17-19. Opening night at 7 p. m. is “The Most Precious of Cargoes.” “I start watching films right after the previous festival wraps up,” Katz revealed, confirming what a full-time job this is. “This film struck me as an opening night film: It’s powerful, emotional with really beautiful animation. “But it’s not a family film per se. Because when people hear it’s animated, I say, ‘Keep in mind it’s telling a story about WWII and the Holocaust.’ “It evokes Guillermo del Toro’s ‘Pan’s Labyrinth’ and the realities of people living in squalor during the war. People who are being exterminated on a massive scale. “But in the narration that feels ‘fairy tale-esque.’ It’s unique in the way it ties into the larger themes of the festival. “There are,” he added, “a number of films this year where people with different afflictions and religions can see the reality of other situations.” This year’s centerpiece screening on Nov. 12 is “All God’s Children,” which Katz calls, “A powerful doc about a white Jewish female rabbi and a Black Baptist reverend who bring their congregations together to fight racism and antisemitism. It shows the power of bringing people from different perspectives but with shared goals together, and also the challenges. “It’s not always a seamless melding but the end result is powerful. We will have the Boston Community Gospel Choir, an interfaith choir. “We’re trying to continue what we did last year by including musical numbers to help people get immersed into the worlds in the films.” Already sold out is “Midas Man,” about the Beatles promoter and manager Brian Epstein. Among the most intriguing entries, from a Hollywood perspective, is “From Darkness to Light,” a doc at the Coolidge Corner Nov. 11. about Jerry Lewis’ highly personal Holocaust drama “The Day the Clown Cried” which he financed, began filming, abandoned, never to be seen. “Unique!” Katz calls it. “Rarely do we have films that tap into film history. There’s a mystique and allure with this film that has so much unknown about it.” bostonjfilm.org

Skillet pork chops perfect weeknight dinner

Skillet pork chops perfect weeknight dinner

Quick and easy, skillet pork chops make a tasty, comforting weeknight dinner. Be sure to use boneless chops; they’re a breeze to cook when quickly seared over high heat in a heavy cast-iron skillet. The key, of course, is to buy the right chops. The only trick to cooking the chops is to not overcook them. Depending on the thickness, about 3 to 5 minutes per side is often plenty. To round out the meal, add seasonal vegetables to the pan after one side is cooked and the chops have been flipped. The vegetables benefit from the meat’s juices and seasonings as their flavors meld. This recipe calls for chopped red pepper and kale with a shot of lemon juice to brighten it all. Use your imagination and vary the ingredients depending on the season, your pantry and tastes. Try apples or pears with fennel finished with a dollop of mustard and a drizzle of maple syrup. How about onions and Italian peppers with a splash of balsamic vinaigrette? Take the chops south of the border with hot peppers and cherry tomatoes zipped up with lime. Leftovers, if you have them, are delicious doused with your favorite barbecue sauce and tucked into a soft, golden bun. TAG GOES HERE Skillet Pork Chops With Peppers and Kale INGREDIENTS 1 or 2 pork chops, each about ¾ to 1 in. thick Coarse salt Freshly ground black pepper 1 tbsp. olive oil 2 tbsp. unsalted butter 1 clove garlic, smashed 2 c. chopped kale 1 large red bell pepper, seeded, deveined and chopped Splash of lemon juice, to taste Generously season the chops with salt and pepper on both sides. Set the chops on a plate and allow to come to room temperature. In a cast-iron skillet set over medium-high heat, melt the oil and butter together. When the butter foams, add the pork chops and sear until the side begins to turn brown, cooking for about 5 minutes. Flip and add the garlic, kale, red pepper and lemon juice to the pan. Continue cooking until the meat reaches 140 degrees on a meat thermometer, another 4 to 6 minutes. Let the chops and the vegetables rest in the pan for about 3 to 5 minutes. Slice and serve the pork with the vegetables on the side. Serves 2. Beth Dooley is the author of “The Perennial Kitchen.” Find her at bethdooleyskitchen.com./Tribune News Service

COSCO Shipping commissions DSIC for six LNG/methanol-ready tankers

Chinese state-owned maritime transport giant COSCO Shipping has tapped compatriot vessel construction player Dalian Shipbuilding Industry (DSIC), part of China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC), for a sextet of alternative fuel-ready tankers. According to Greek shipbroker Intermodal, COSCO Shipping is expected to cash out $119.1 million for each of the six 307,000 dwt tankers. Once completed, DSIC plans to hand over the ships to COSCO between 2027 and 2028. As disclosed, the vessels are going to be sent off to the Chinese maritime transport company with liquefied natural gas (LNG)- and methanol-ready specifications. Owing to LNG, the most mature and most widely available alternative fuel at the moment, the tankers are expected to accomplish a 25-30% reduction in carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. LNG could also enable the vessels to cut other pollutants, including sulfur oxides (SOx), nitrogen oxides (NOx), and particulate matter (PM). Similarly, if converted to run on methanol—which has, together with ammonia, gained increased interest from maritime stakeholders—the ships could cut SOx emissions by up to 99%, NOx emissions by 80% and PM by 95%. Moreover, should green methanol be applied, the sextet could also achieve near-zero carbon operations. In addition to arriving ready for conversion to these two environmentally friendly fuels, per data from Intermodal, COSCO’s upcoming vessels will have their ecological performance ‘enhanced’ through the installation of exhaust gas cleaning systems (EGCSs), otherwise known as scrubbers, which will further remove harmful pollutants to meet international regulations. COSCO Shipping, one of the largest maritime transport players in the world, is said to currently own a fleet of around 251 oil and gas tankers, with a total capacity of 32.80 million (per late 2024 data). When all segments are included, the company reportedly operates a fleet of more than 1,500 units. Last year, China’s shipowners splashed $123 billion into newbuilding ship orders, among which COSCO Shipping Lines was the runner-up, having spent $3.06 billion on 18 new Panamax containerships, in particular, ranging from 13,400 to 14,000 TEUs. Moreover, among all vessel types booked at Chinese yards, tankers took the number one spot, with a total of 526 units worth $24.4 billion ordered. Dalian Shipbuilding signed multiple contracts to build tankers in 2024. For instance, in August, the company was commissioned by compatriot shipping major China Merchants Energy Shipping (CMES) for ten energy-efficient units, with deliveries scheduled for 2027 and 2028. In December, COSCO Shipping Energy Transportation (CSET) shook hands with DSIC and COSCO Shipbuilding Trading for the construction of six eco-friendly 307,000 dwt crude oil tankers.

Kerry GAA chief on AFL recruiters: 'If a young lad is doing his Leaving Cert, nobody should be ringing him'

“In terms of Kerry, we don’t take it lying down,” says Twiss. “And we’d be aware of young lads who are being employed, and we’d always maybe try and give them another option, with schools, or college, or whatever. You have to be kind of careful doing that because you have to appreciate him and his family and but you should certainly try to be seen to do something. “You can be just complaining, and you’ve got to fight fire with fire up to a point. Now, there’s a limit, obviously. But I think you should never give up the battle. I think it would be important that any player thinking about leaving Kerry should feel that he can come to talk to the chairman, or secretary, and we can maybe look at other options, within reason. “I think that’s the message that should go out as well. This idea of doing nothing wouldn’t be Kerry’s way at all. I don’t think it really would have any meaning in the sense of purely financial but of support for education, or something like that.” Twiss would like to see the recruitment process regulated so that teenagers aren’t approached directly especially at a time when they are facing exams. “It’s an amateur sport, and he’s an amateur player, and his family’s entitled to their privacy. So, we appreciate that. It would be ideal if there was some more of a structured thing because at least then everybody might be aware of what’s going on. “If a young lad is doing his Leaving Cert, nobody should be ringing him. I’m not saying that’s the case, but from what I hear, some people were saying there were phone-calls made while he [Murphy] was doing his exams. Now, that to me would be wrong. I’d call it out. At the same time, a young lad and his family are entitled to make whatever decision they make.” After Mark O’Connor, Rob Monahan and Cillian Burke, Murphy is the fourth Kerryman to be signed to an AFL club in 2026. Twiss considers the investment of time and expertise put into Murphy at Stacks and believes the AFL outfits would be agreeable to contributing something to the original clubs of recruited Gaelic footballers. “If we look at the Austin Stacks Club, and all the work that’s put in now to developing Ben, you would feel that some sense of fair play would say that the club should get something, even if it was a contribution towards their training, or their under-age, Bord na nÓg or Coiste na nÓg. And I’m sure the people over in Australia in the clubs would be more than happy (to do so) if it was put to them in that context.” Twiss wishes only the best for Murphy as he attempts to make a career in the AFL. “It’s disappointing but, first and foremost, we wish him the best, and that’s the important thing. He’s a young lad, and the best of luck to him and his family. And I’m sure they’ll miss him as well over in Australia. So that’s our first priority, that he enjoys and has a good time there. “He’s a young lad. In a way, if he wants to go, he should go because you need to maybe experience it and see where you are. Who knows down the line, he may come back even a better player. But the main thing is that he enjoys himself, he’s safe and he prospers. And we will always welcome him back, if he comes back, yes.” Twiss continues: “Young lads have to live their lives. They’re top-class sports people. I’m sure if I was a sports person, I’d want to go to Australia as well, so you have to appreciate that. And I always believe that somewhere along the line, they will come back whether it’s Ben, whether it’s Cillian Burke, or whoever, and we’ll be all the better for it then.” Peter Twiss was speaking at the launch of “Champions Under Lights” Kerry v Tipperary game in Fethard Town Park on December 13. ‘They Said Gurdwaras Are For Sikhs’: Hindus Heartbroken After Pak Denies Entry To Nankana Sahib

Several Hindu pilgrims have expressed anger after Pakistan stopped them from crossing the Attari-Wagah border to visit Nankana Sahib on the occasion of Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s birth anniversary. Families claimed they had all the required documents, but Pakistan authorities cancelled their visas at the last moment, allegedly stating that the gurdwaras were meant for Sikh devotees, not Hindus. Amar Chand, a Hindu pilgrim whose family was among those stopped, told CNN-News18, “My seven family members’ visas got cancelled. After getting the visa, we reached the Wagah border and completed the immigration process. But once we boarded the bus, Pakistani security personnel asked us to deboard. They said gurdwaras are for Sikhs, not Hindu pilgrims, and finally cancelled our visas.” He said that Pakistan wants to divide the people of India. Another Hindu devotee, Ajay Kumar, who faced a similar experience, shared his ordeal with CNN-News18. “We had tried earlier also, but could not go to Nankana Sahib. All my documents and visa were cleared, but after seeing my passport, the Pakistani security said that I am a Hindu and cannot go there. Two Sikh pilgrims who were with me were allowed to go,” he said. Calling the incident discriminatory, Kumar added, “Pakistan should be given a message that this type of treatment with Hindus is not acceptable. We just wanted to pay obeisance at Nankana Sahib and come back. This is a very wrong message by Pakistan. They issued us a visa first, then cancelled it. They did not prove to be true to their word.” He demanded a retaliatory response from the Indian government. Meanwhile, top Indian government sources told CNN-News18 that the denial of entry to Hindu pilgrims by Pakistan is a matter of “serious diplomatic concern.”

Get a Galaxy tablet with £70 off as Currys beats Samsung's prices

Tablets have become key pieces of tech, whether using them at home or on the go for everything from streaming box sets to shopping online or devouring a good book. With so many devices on the market, it can be hard to know which device to pick. Currys is currently selling the Samsung Galaxy Tab S10 Lite 10.9-inch tablet with 128GB storage for £259. That’s an impressive £70 saving on the usual price of £329 at the electronics retailer. Thanks to a large 10.9" display with crisp 2K resolution and smooth 90Hz refresh rate, the Tab S10 Lite is ideal for watching films, playing games, or browsing photos taken on 8.0 MP rear and 5.0 MP front cameras. It’s handy for studying or homework too, thanks to the bundled S Pen stylus that turns the device into a digital notebook or sketchpad in seconds. READ MORE: John Lewis announces new £15 designer tote taking over from popular Lulu Guinness ones READ MORE: 'I install show homes, this Dunelm rechargeable lamp is gorgeous for ambient lighting' Just 6.6mm thin and weighing 524g, the tablet is lightweight and portable, although that doesn’t mean it’s not powerful. It comes with up to 8GB of memory, and an 8,000 mAh battery that Samsung says can deliver up to 16 hours of video playback. It also has a fingerprint scanner for extra security. If shoppers look directly on Samsung, the Galaxy S10 Lite tablet currently has 20% off with code ‘UNLOCK’. With the discount, that puts the 128GB model at £263.20 (down from £329) and the 256GB model at £311.20 (down from £389), although both can have their storage expanded with a microSD card. It still means the Currys deal will still work out more cheaper for shoppers with the £70 saving. For an even cheaper choice, the Honor Pad 9 is sold at Amazon for £179 . Despite its lower price tag, it boasts a larger 12.1-inch display with 120Hz refresh rate, and an eight-speaker immersive audio system, perfect for cosy evenings bingeing the latest series as the days are shorter. Several Currys shoppers are pleased with the Samsung Galaxy S10 Lite, however. One commented: “Fast performance with lasting battery. Enough storage.” A second added: “This was a purchase for my son for school. "He's very happy with it. He appreciates the ability to take notes with a pen. We also received a case as part of a promotion, so it's double the fun. We recommend it.” The tablet also has good reviews on the Samsung website, where it’s rated 4.7/5. A customer said: “Great size, ideal for what I use it for, i.e. games, social media, and browsing. Good price point too.” As part of a longer review on the Samsung website, one buyer said: “Only had this tablet a few weeks. So far I'm quite happy with it. It was easy to get used to. I can do everything that I want to with it, except it is not compatible with my printer.” Another shopper left five stars on the Currys website, but did note some drawbacks: “Very good tablet, especially for studies and lightweight daily things. It guarantees seven years’ smooth usage with updates, so awesome value for money, but the battery is a little short, and I think the screen size is also small.”

NBA: Steph Curry, Moses Moody Shine In GSW's Triumph Over Phoenix Suns

The Golden State Warriors established an early lead and held on to defeat the short-handed Phoenix Suns 118-107 on Tuesday night as Stephen Curry scored 28 points, including five 3-pointers, while Moses Moody came off the bench to add 24 points with five 3s. Devin Booker achieved a season-high 38 points, making all 11 of his free throws. Mark Williams contributed 16 points and a season-best 16 rebounds, and Grayson Allen also scored 16 points for the Suns, who were missing Dillon Brooks and Jalen Green due to injuries. The Suns trailed 68-49 at halftime but rallied with a 20-6 run at the end of the third quarter, closing the gap to 92-83. Quinten Post added 14 points with four 3-pointers and six rebounds for Golden State, while Brandin Podziemski scored 13 points and Buddy Hield added 12. This balanced performance was welcome for the Warriors, who had recently played seven games across five cities in 12 days and have another game in Sacramento on Wednesday. Coach Steve Kerr announced that Curry would sit out against the Kings due to a worsening cold. The Warriors remain undefeated at home with a 4-0 record, while the Suns suffered their fourth consecutive road loss to start the season. Jimmy Butler was questionable due to lower back soreness but started the game after completing his warmup. He contributed to an early 11-0 run for Golden State, who led 33-19 after the first quarter, making 7 of 11 3-pointers. However, Butler did not return for the second half, finishing with two points on 1-for-5 shooting in 14 minutes. Kerr mentioned Butler would be questionable again for Wednesday’s game. Al Horford sat out the front end of the back-to-back as the Warriors manage his left toe injury.

Good Morning Britain's Ed Balls supported by co-stars as he shares announcement on air

Ed Balls received backing live on air today from co-presenter Susanna Reid as the duo fronted Wednesday morning's Good Morning Britain programme. The 58-year-old ITV presenter was praised by colleagues after it was revealed he had scooped a prestigious accolade. Susanna revealed that he had been recognised with a Lifetime Ambassador Award for championing support for those who stammer. Whilst she spoke, Ed playfully retrieved the award trophy from beneath the desk and started buffing the glass surface, making it sparkle beneath the studio lighting. "Congratulations," Susanna remarked before continuing, "I have to say, you do do so much to inspire people, particularly young people, I would say, but also older people who can't open up about the fact that they have a stammer. "You are very open about it, despite the fact for years in your professional life, you could barely admit to yourself that you had a stammer.", reports the Express . Ed then shared his thoughts as he explained: "I was told if you talk about it, it'll make a difference. The award is partly for having gotten the support as an adult, but I also think it's for spreading a message. "That's what we do from time to time on Good Morning Britain, we say it's ok to talk about it. If you ask for help and you get it, it will make a difference." He then made the moment more cheerful as he quipped: "And you could even end up like me, being able to - well, sort of being able to read an autocue!" The presenting panel chuckled amongst themselves before regular show guest, Kevin Maguire, added: "This is where it is really important, where people can see someone like them who has overcome whatever, done well and prospered. It's being a role model. Well done." Viewers at home also rallied behind him, with one posting on X, formerly known as Twitter ,: "Well done, Ed! Always knew you had it in you-now don't go getting too fancy on us! How's it feel to be the talk of the town?". Another commented: "Congrats @edballs, well deserved. You are a role model and inspiration for many," whilst a third chimed in: "Absolutely well done, Congratulations Ed Balls." During a 2011 chat with The Times, Ed first revealed his struggle with a stammer as he detailed how he had to learn all his speeches by heart due to problems reading from a script. However, he wasn't officially diagnosed with the condition until he reached 41. He revealed at the time: "The worst thing you can do is try and stop it. That's when you trip up. It happens to me on live TV. "Some people speak without notes because they think it looks better. Some people do it because they think it leads to a better speech. But I can't read the words out." Good Morning Britain airs weekdays on ITV1 and ITVX at 6am

Chocolate bounty: Ghana at war against cocoa smugglers

Chocolate bounty: Ghana at war against cocoa smugglers

The disconnect between high global cocoa prices and the price paid to farmers has resulted in unprecedented cocoa smuggling across Ghana’s borders. In mid-September, a minibus travelling from Ghana’s capital Accra was intercepted further north-east in the town of Sagakope by the Sogakope District Police and the National Anti-Cocoa Smuggling Taskforce. The vehicle was stopped based on intelligence that the driver was smuggling cocoa beans and headed towards the town of Aflao near the border with Togo. Sixteen bags of cocoa beans were discovered in a hidden roof compartment of the bus. The same vehicle and driver had been intercepted on the same route with same amount of cocoa on September 2. In total, more than 350 bags of cocoa had been seized in September alone, including 238 bags in two trucks believed to be destined for Togo via the sea route. According to data from Ghana’s cocoa board COCOBOD accessed by News GhanaExternal link, the country has lost almost half a million tonnes of cocoa (473,253 tonnes) to smuggling since 2021. This is equivalent to about $1.28 billion (CHF1 billion) in revenue from cocoa beans grown on its soil. “The difference in price between Ghana and its neighbours, late payments and unstable currency are responsible for smuggling across borders,” Joseph Bandanaa, Ghana Country Lead for the Swiss Platform for Sustainable Cocoa (SWISSCO), told Swissinfo. For example, in October 2024, the price per tonne of cocoa was $3,060 in the Ivory Coast and $3,039 in Ghana. While the difference may not seem like much, cash flow issues at COCOBOD have occasionally resulted in delayed payments to farmers increasing the temptation to sell cocoa on the black market. Switzerland is affected because Ghana is the main source of cocoa for the Swiss chocolate industry. Companies that are members of the Swiss Platform for Sustainable Cocoa have committed to sourcing 100% sustainable cocoa by 2030 (currently at 84% in 2024). This requires tracing sourced cocoa back to individual farms, a task that is made more difficult by smuggling. “Switzerland can provide technical assistance, capacity-building, and digital tools to enhance Ghana’s systems for traceability, border monitoring, and export control. Such collaboration would reinforce transparency and accountability across the cocoa value chain, contributing to a more sustainable, resilient, and legally compliant cocoa sector in Ghana,” says Bandanaa. Reward for informers The world’s second-biggest cocoa producer wants to significantly increase seizures of smuggled cocoa. On October 8, COCOBOD announced a reward scheme for informants. “Under this arrangement, informants and anti-smuggling agents will receive one-third of the assessed value of confiscated cocoa as their reward,” said the announcement. An informant, for instance, who contributes to the seizure of 16 bags of cocoa beans hidden inside a minibus could pocket as much as GHS19,333 (about $1,800), just slightly less than the average annual income of a cocoa farmer (GHS24,814). While smuggling of Ghana’s cocoa is not a new issue, record global cocoa prices have made it more profitable than before. In Togo, the recommended farmgate price is based on the global price of cacao and is adjusted twice a month to reflect volatility. Thus when global prices reached record highs in 2024 and 2025 (almost $10,000 and $11,000 per tonne respectively), farmers immediately reaped the benefits. Ghana’s COCOBOD on the other hand, sets prices only once a year at the beginning of the cocoa harvest. The system offers stability but can result in farmers getting much less when global prices spike, making it tempting for smugglers to sell Ghanaian cocoa across the border. “Togo could also be a conduit for smuggling cocoa elsewhere and not necessarily the final destination. It is quite easy as the Volta cocoa-growing region is on the border,” says Bandanaa. Price matching When the annual farmgate price of GHS51,660 (US$5,040) per tonne was announced in August, the average cocoa price on the global market was $7,592. In response, the Ghana Cooperative Cocoa Farmers and Marketing Association, which represents about 300,000 farmers, threatened to bar COCOBOD representatives from visiting their farms. The protesting farmers even threatened to smuggle their cocoa to neighbouring Ivory Coast and Togo if they were not adequately renumerated. To add more pressure, on October 1, the Ivory Coast’s president, Alassane Ouattara, announced a record farmgate price of FCFA2,800/kilo (about $5,000/tonne) just ahead of the presidential elections slated for October 25. To appease disgruntled farmers, Ghana’s finance minister Cassiel Ato Forson announced an updated farmgate price on October 2, an unprecedented move. Farmers were promised GHS58,000 ($5,393) per tonne, a 12.2% increase over the price set in August. Both countries are aware of the significant loss of revenue from smuggling and created a sort of cocoa cartel in 2023 called Côte d’Ivoire-Ghana Cocoa Initiative (CIGCI) to better coordinate prices. Despite increasing farmgate prices, the 2024 Cocoa Household Income study of SWISSCO and COCOBOD focusing on the 2022/23 harvest found that 91% of 600 cocoa farming households surveyed in Ghana earned below the adjusted living income benchmark of GHS52,970 ($4,315). “Living income goes beyond just price. The goal must be to increase productivity and reduce costs of inputs such as fertilizers so farmers have enough money for household expenditure,” says Bandanaa. This year, COCBOD reintroduced free fertilisers for cocoa farmers. Ironically, this was stopped in 2020 because the free fertiliser was being smuggled out of the country and sold. Other support measures offered to farmers include free pesticides, flower inducers and spraying machines. Edited by Virginie Mangin/sb

Trump once again nominates tech space traveler Jared Isaacman to serve as NASA administrator

WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump announced Tuesday he has decided to nominate Jared Isaacman to serve as his NASA administrator, months after withdrawing the tech billionaire's nomination because of concerns about his political leanings. Trump announced in late May that he had decided to withdraw Isaacman after a "thorough review" of his "prior associations." Weeks after the withdrawal, Trump went further in expressing his concerns about Isaacman's Republican credentials. At the time, Trump acknowledged that he thought Isaacman "was very good," but had become "surprised to learn" that Isaacman was a " blue blooded Democrat, who had never contributed to a Republican before." Isaacman had the endorsement of Trump's former DOGE adviser and tech entrepreneur Elon Musk. The president and Musk had a very public falling out earlier this year but are now on better terms. Last week, Trump told reporters he and Musk have spoken "on and off" since sitting together at conservative activist Charlie Kirk's funeral last month in Arizona and that their relationship is "good." Trump made no mention of his previous decision to nominate and then withdraw Isaacman in his Tuesday evening announcement of the re-nomination on his Truth Social platform. And the White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Trump's decision to reverse course. "This evening, I am pleased to nominate Jared Isaacman, an accomplished business leader, philanthropist, pilot, and astronaut, as Administrator of NASA," Trump posted. "Jared's passion for Space, astronaut experience, and dedication to pushing the boundaries of exploration, unlocking the mysteries of the universe, and advancing the new Space economy, make him ideally suited to lead NASA into a bold new Era." Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy has been serving as interim NASA administrator. The president on Tuesday praised Duffy for doing an "incredible job." Isaacman, CEO and founder of credit card-processing company Shift4, has been a close collaborator with Musk ever since buying his first chartered flight with SpaceX. He also bought a series of spaceflights from SpaceX and conducted the first private spacewalk. SpaceX has extensive contracts with NASA. The Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee approved Isaacman's nomination in late April and a vote by the full Senate had been expected when Trump announced he was yanking the nomination. In his own social media post Tuesday, Isaacman thanked Trump for the nomination and the "space-loving community." He made no mention of the earlier turmoil.

TGS and Chevron ink long-term deal for deepwater seismic services

Norwegian energy data and intelligence company TGS and U.S.-headquartered energy giant Chevron have signed a three-year capacity agreement for marine streamer and ocean bottom node (OBN) acquisition services. The parties plan to collaborate on seismic acquisition projects using TGS streamer and OBN crews for exploration and development projects. The minimum firm commitment under the terms of the capacity agreement is 18 months, with the previously announced St Malo 4D OBN reservoir monitoring contract in the Gulf of America to be included in the agreement, and will kick start the collaboration immediately. According to TGS, the capacity agreement will also drive collaboration on technology development in a range of geophysical areas, from survey design, acquisition technology, data collection, and data integration. “We are thrilled to announce a major milestone in our commitment to evolving the global marine seismic market: the signing of the global Capacity Agreement (CA). Chevron, a true industry explorer and long-term client, is ideal for this strategic collaboration,” said Kristian Johansen, CEO of TGS. “This agreement not only provides crucial utilization and visibility for both parties but also creates an opportunity for collaboration across our wider service portfolio. Our shared focus on new frontier areas makes us highly complementary, and we are excited to immediately begin supporting Chevron’s global exploration and reservoir management strategies.”

Since then, he had been performing singles from the upcoming album, including Tailor Swif and Highjack, at various music festivals.Don't Be Dumb was initially slated for release on August 30, 2024. It’s just I hope that it’s digestible...It’s odd because as I get older, I’m more conscious about how I view myself. Describing my life sounds very braggadocious, and I want to figure out how to say it to where it feels more humble, relatable, and sincere, as opposed to just s**tting on the next person or making the next person feel down, or just evoking negative s**t out of people.”During a September interview with Elle, A$AP Rocky seemed irate at the notion that he was not invested in his rap career, adding that it was "sacred" and he treated it with "way more spirituality." He also suggested that the album delay was partly due to his growing family. For context, Rocky and Rihanna had welcomed their third child that September, and already have two sons, RZA and Riot.Rihanna with sons Riot and RZA at the Los Angeles premiere of Smurfs (Image via Getty)Additionally, A$AP Rocky said he was "a bit foolish" to announce a release date for Don't Be Dumb when he sat down for an interview with Numéro in October, adding that he would prefer to "let the music speak for itself" instead of talking about release dates.“To be honest, I don’t want to talk about release dates anymore. I’d rather let the music speak for itself. One day, you’ll wake up and see what’s coming up. I was a bit foolish giving dates last time... Today, I want to make it clear. You’ll just have to wait and enjoy the record when [it comes] out,” he said.In other news, A$AP Rocky gushed about being a girl dad, calling it "amazing" and saying that he was "glowing" during a press interview with ExtraTV on the 2025 CFDA Awards red carpet.

“Caption with romance is inappropriate”- Fans divided over Disney+ Japan’s announcement of BTS' Jungkook & Jimin's Are You Sure?! Season 2

On Wednesday, November 5, Disney+ Japan announced the upcoming season of BTS' Jungkook and Jimin's travel reality show, Are You Sure?!. While fans and netizens were thrilled to learn more details about the forthcoming show, the caption used by Disney+ Japan for their announcement of the new season garnered heavy backlash. This was particularly due to the use of the word "romance" to describe the show and the two members' journey. Here's what the translated version of Disney+ Japan's announcement for the show's season 2 reads:"This Time's Destinations are Switzerland and Vietnam. Look Forward to a Journey Filled with Laughter and Romance."Following this post's landing on the internet, many fans were offended by Disney+'s alleged fan service marketing to promote the show. They criticized the show for encouraging and monopolizing on the ongoing fan-ships between Jimin and Jungkook, and called them out for the same. Many also suggested a boycott of the show in order to refrain from supporting the alleged disrespectful fan service marketing used for the show. However, many Japanese fans came to the defense and explained that the translation is inaccurate. The word "romance" in Japanese, they stated, doesn't only translate to its literal meaning, but is also often used to mean adventure or dreams. Given that Are You Sure?! is a travel reality show, fans argued that the usage of "romance" was intended for its latter meanings. They also further reasoned their stance by stating that no other language announcements for Are You Sure?! from Disney+ stated the word "romance". Mira Nair Picks A Cannes Moment From 1988 To Describe Son Zohran Mamdani

The year was 1988. Filmmaker Mira Nair was in Cannes for the screening of her movie Salaam Bombay. Her mother, Praveen Nair, had accompanied her to the prestigious festival frequented by eminent artists across the world. Wearing a saree on a floor dotted with luxe couture, she was easily the odd one out. Left confused, the paparazzi asked if she was an actor. And it was her poignant response that won hearts. "I am the producer of the director," answered the filmmaker's mother. In what completes a full circle 37 years later, Mira Nair, now 68, has recounted the incident while introducing herself as the "producer of the candidate."Her son, Zohran Mamdani, has won the mayoral elections in New York and is now set to become the first Muslim mayor of Big Apple, etching his name in history also as the first person of South Asian descent and the first African-born to hold the post.During an interaction with Vogue India and filmmaker Bijoy Shetty, it was pointed out to Nair that her movies engaged with the questions of identity and belonging, which are central to the politics of her son, Mamdani.Nair agreed and praised his vision. "I feel like Zohran brings us to a new dawn and a new day," Vogue quoted her as saying. She said she was amazed by Mamdani's articulation and that her son "embodies the multiplicity of the worlds in him without apology, and actually with great celebration." Mamdani sees the world through a visionary approach that is not about power but equality, justice, and respect for the working people, praised his mother.A proud mother had her moment. She recalled the Cannes incident and said, "My mother was quoted at the 1988 Cannes Film Festival, where Salaam Bombay! was being screened, saying, "I'm the producer of the director." And now I say, "I'm the producer of the candidate."Mamdani, born to Mira Nair and Ugandan scholar Mahmood Mamdani, defeated former New York Governor and independent Andrew Cuomo and Republican Curtis Sliwa in the mayoral polls in New York. In her first reaction to her son's victory, she shared an Instagram story by filmmaker Zoya Akhtar that reads "Zohran, you beauty."Zohran Mamdani will become the youngest mayor of New York when he takes office on January 1.
