Sudan: RSF Agrees to Humanitarian Ceasefire

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Sudan's rebel Rapid Support Forces (RSF) agreed to a proposal from the United States and Arab countries for a humanitarian ceasefire, the group said in a statement on Thursday. The RSF and the Sudanese army have been at war for two years and although they have agreed to various ceasefire proposals during that time, none have yet succeeded."In response to the aspirations and interests of the Sudanese people, the Rapid Support Forces affirms its agreement to enter into the humanitarian truce proposed by the Quad countries," the RSF said in a statement, with the "Quad countries" referring to the United States, Egypt, the UAE and Saudi Arabia. The announcement comes less than two weeks after the RSF took over the famine-stricken city of el-Fasher in the western region of Darfur.President Donald Trump's advisor on Africa, Massad Boulos, had said earlier this week that both sides had expressed openness to a three-month humanitarian ceasefire. But the Sudanese Armed Forces has not yet commented on the RSF's announcement. In its latest statement, army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan had only said his forces were "striving for the defeat of the enemy."A humanitarian crisisDarfur has been almost completely overtaken by the RSF, following a series of attacks on el-Fasher, which has been under siege for over a year.According to the World Health Organization, the RSF killed over 450 people at a local hospital, carried out house-to-house killings and committed sexual assaults.A report by Yale University researchers said on Thursday that new satellite imagery has detected activity "consistent with mass graves," which could be evidence of the atrocities that have been reported in the area.Various humanitarian agencies have spoken out about a dire situation for civilians in Darfur. The non-profit Islamic Relief warned in a statement on Thursday that community kitchens on which many families rely are at risk of collapse.Sudan's Doctors Network also said that humanitarian conditions are also worsening in displacement camps in the cities of Tawila, Kurma, and Golo. Those cities have seen a significant increase in the number of displaced people fleeing, which exceeds 36,000 in recent days.Editor’s Choice: Sudanese Ambassador Accuses UAE and Allies of Fueling Resource WarClick here to get the latest news updates from Tempo on Google News

U.S. Seeks Extradition of Costa Rican Drug Leader from Limón

U.S. Seeks Extradition of Costa Rican Drug Leader from Limón

Federal authorities in New York have formally asked Costa Rica to hand over Gilberth Bell Fernández, a 62-year-old man known as “Macho Coca,” to stand trial on charges of running an international cocaine operation. The request marks a key step in U.S. efforts to dismantle networks that move drugs from Central America northward. The U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York filed the extradition papers, which Costa Rican officials confirmed on Wednesday. Prosecutors there accuse Bell of heading a group that stored and shipped large amounts of cocaine from Costa Rica to the United States between March 2022 and August 2023. Court documents detail how Bell allegedly dealt directly with undercover DEA agents, selling them a drug sample and discussing plans to send 700 kilograms of cocaine to New York. Costa Rica’s Attorney General’s Office announced the development in a statement, noting close work between the Public Ministry, the Judicial Investigation Agency (OIJ), and the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA). As part of the process, authorities requested Bell’s provisional detention through the Criminal Court of the First Judicial Circuit in San José. Bell remains in custody here, held on separate charges tied to a fuel theft ring. In Costa Rica, Bell faces no active drug trafficking case, despite the U.S. allegations. Instead, investigators link him to a criminal outfit that siphoned fuel from ships docking at the Moín port in Limón. OIJ reports describe how the group tapped into transfer hoses, stealing enough to fill five tanker trucks per vessel. This scheme reportedly brought in about ₡400 million – roughly $740,000 – each month. Bell’s troubles with U.S. authorities go back further. In November 2023, the U.S. Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) placed him on its sanctions list, the first Costa Rican to earn that spot. The move freezes any assets he holds in the U.S. and bars American citizens or firms from dealing with him. It also cuts him off from much of the international banking system. OFAC targets people and groups involved in drug trade, terrorism, money laundering, and similar crimes. Others from Costa Rica have since joined the list, including former Public Security Minister Celso Gamboa, Alejandro Arias (alias “Diablo”), Alejandro James (alias “Turesky”), and Edwin López (alias “Pecho de Rata”). Bell, based in Limón, stands out as a major player in the region’s cocaine flow, according to U.S. officials who call him one of the area’s top traffickers. The extradition push comes amid growing concerns over Costa Rica’s role in global drug routes. Limón, with its busy ports, has become a transit point for shipments heading to North America and Europe. Local law enforcement has stepped up raids, but cross-border cases like this highlight the need for tighter international ties. Bell’s case now moves to Costa Rican courts, where judges will review the U.S. evidence and decide on his transfer. If approved, he would face federal charges in New York, potentially leading to a long prison term. For now, he stays behind bars in Costa Rica, awaiting the next legal turn.

Iconic Rockefeller Christmas Tree Begins Journey from Upstate New York to Illuminate Manhattan

The majestic Christmas tree destined to illuminate Rockefeller Center this festive season is currently making its journey to New York City. This impressive 75-foot (23-meter) Norway spruce was cut down on Thursday morning in East Greenbush, a suburb near Albany, around 150 miles (240 kilometers) from Manhattan. Weighing in at 11 tons, the tree was carefully placed onto a 100-foot (31-meter) trailer as a crowd gathered to witness the event. It is scheduled to arrive at 30 Rockefeller Plaza on Saturday, where it will be positioned in front of the iconic Art Deco building, overlooking the renowned ice skating rink. The tree will be adorned with over 50,000 multicolored, energy-efficient LED lights and topped with a 900-pound (408-kilogram) Swarovski star. Its official lighting ceremony is set for December 3, hosted by country music star Reba McEntire, and will be broadcast live on television. The tree will remain on display until mid-January, after which it will be transformed into lumber for Habitat for Humanity’s affordable housing projects. Judy Russ and her family, who donated the tree, shared that it was originally planted by her husband’s great-grandparents back in the 1920s. “For this to now become the center of New York City Christmas is incredible,” Russ told the radio station 1010 WINS. The first Rockefeller Center Christmas tree was put up by workers in 1931 to raise spirits during the Great Depression. The comparatively modest, 20-foot-tall (6-meter-tall) balsam fir was outfitted with handmade garlands made by the workers’ families. The tradition stuck as the first annual tree-lighting ceremony was held in 1933.

Man who threw sandwich at federal agent found not guilty of assault

A former US Justice Department paralegal has been found not guilty of assault after throwing a sandwich at a federal agent during President Donald Trump's law enforcement surge in Washington DC. Sean Charles Dunn became a symbol of resistance to Mr Trump's deployment of federal agents in America's capital following a viral video showing him tossing a sandwich at a Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agent on August 10. Mr Dunn, 37, shouted "fascists" and "racists" and chanted "shame" toward the group of agents, who were in front of a club hosting a "Latin Night". "Why are you here? I don't want you in my city!" Mr Dunn shouted, according to police. Mr Dunn ran away after hitting the agent with the sandwich but was apprehended. He was rearrested after being released from custody when armed federal agents in riot gear raided his home. The White House posted a highly produced "propaganda" video of the raid on its official X account, Mr Dunn's lawyers said. His misdemeanour acquittal is another setback for prosecutors, who have faced a backlash for their aggressive charging tactics during the law enforcement surge. The Justice Department had initially sought a felony assault indictment against Mr Dunn, but in a highly unusual move, the grand jury declined to sign off on the felony charge. The office of US attorney Jeanine Pirro then charged Mr Dunn with a misdemeanour. There was no dispute over whether Mr Dunn threw the sandwich. But his lawyers argued it was a "harmless gesture" during an act of protest protected by the First Amendment to the US Constitution, which protects free speech.. After the foreperson read the verdict, Mr Dunn hugged his lawyers. Later, he said: "I'm relieved and I'm looking forward to moving on with my life." After Mr Dunn's arrest, Attorney-General Pamela Bondi announced his firing in a social media post that referred to him as "an example of the Deep State". Mr Dunn's lawyers urged the judge to dismiss the case for what they alleged was a vindictive and selective prosecution. They argued that the posts by Ms Bondi and the White House showed Mr Dunn had been targeted for his political speech. Mr Dunn did not testify at his trial, but the jury heard him explain after his arrest why he had confronted the CBP agents. A law enforcement officer's body camera captured him saying: "I did it. I threw a sandwich. I did it to draw them away from where they were. I succeeded." After his acquittal, Mr Dunn said he was trying to protect the rights of immigrants that night. "Let us not forget that the great seal of the United States says, 'e pluribus unum'. That means 'from many, one,'" he told reporters. "Every life matters, no matter where you came from, no matter how you got here, no matter how you identify it. You have the right to live a life that is free." Ms Pirro, a former Fox News host appointed by Trump to be the top federal prosecutor for Washington, said in a statement: "As always, we accept a jury's verdict; that is the system within which we function. However, law enforcement should never be subjected to assault, no matter how 'minor.'" She added that "even children know when they are angry, they are not allowed to throw objects at one another". 'Felony footlong' CBP Agent Gregory Lairmore testified that the sandwich "exploded" when it struck his chest hard enough that he could feel it through his ballistic vest. "You could smell the onions and the mustard," he recalled. Agent Lairmore's colleagues jokingly gave him gifts making light of the incident, including a sandwich-shaped plush toy and a patch that said "felony footlong". Agent Lairmore acknowledged that he kept the gifts, placing the patch on his lunch box.

Construction worker, dad of 2 ‘fighting to survive’ after losing part of leg in Massachusetts hit-and-run

A father and construction worker lost part of his leg after he was struck by a hit-and-run driver along a Massachusetts highway early Monday morning — and authorities are still searching for the reckless motorist responsible. David Wachinski, a dad of two from Pennsylvania, was working on a construction project on Interstate 95 in Foxboro, Mass. when a driver slammed into him around 2:15 a.m. Monday, Massachusetts State Police said. Wachinski was trying to set up a sign when the driver plowed into him with enough force to knock their vehicle’s side-view mirror clean off. He was rushed to the Boston Medical Center and treated for severe injuries. He lost part of his leg, but it’s unclear if it was removed during surgery or partially severed during the initial hit-and-run. Wachinski’s wife, sister-and-law, and other family members made the trek from Pennsylvania to stay by his side while he continues to receive extensive treatment for his injuries. “It was scary. You don’t know too much, you don’t know what’s going to happen next. He fought and is still fighting to survive,” his sister-in-law, Mina Thompson, told CBS News. “A lot of people love him. A lot of people appreciate him. He could have just been gone. Someone knows something. Whether it’s them who did hit him and they’re scared or they’re having second guesses or they told a family member, you know,” Thompson continued. Massachusetts State troopers are trying to trace a passenger-side mirror found at the scene back to the vehicle involved in the crash. “The Massachusetts State Police offers the victim and his family our deepest sympathy in the aftermath of this senseless crash. Although he is expected to live, the impact of his injuries illustrates the danger of failing to drive with care in and around work zones,” police said in a statement. Thompson implored the person responsible to turn themselves in and give their family the “closure” that they need to move forward. “It’s never too late to turn around and be like, ‘Hey I messed up and I want to come forward and that’s what we’re hoping for, just so we can get that closure. What gets done in darkness will come out to light, so it will come out,” she told CBS News. Friends praised Wachinski in a GoFundMe organized to help the family cope with the mounting medical and travel expenses, on top of the breadwinner’s lost income. “David is a devoted husband and the proud father of two amazing boys. Anyone who knows him knows how hard he works to provide for his family and how quick he is to lend a hand to others,” the organizer wrote.

Sports News | Quinton De Kock Breaks Gibbs ODI Ton Record as South Africa Trounce Pakistan in 2nd ODI

Faisalabad [Pakistan], November 7 (ANI): Quinton de Kock, known for his astute technique, became the player to wallop the third-most centuries for South Africa in ODIs after his batting masterclass steered the Proteas to an emphatic 8-wicket win over Pakistan at Faisalabad's Iqbal Stadium in the second fixture to level the series 1-1. The flamboyant southpaw engineered an unbeaten 123(119), a knock riddled with luck, to knock Pakistan off the perch and gun down a modest 270-run target in the second ODI. With another classic performance, de Kock's tally soared to 22, taking him past Herschelle Gibbs' 21 ODI tons. The 123* was de Kock's first hundred since reversing his retirement, a decision he took after the 2023 World Cup. While pursuing the target, de Kock received an unprecedented lifeline after he attempted to flick the ball but sent it straight to Mohammad Nawaz, who got both of his hands on it but allowed it to pop out. He never looked back and thwacked Saim Ayub for an 80m maximum. In the next over, he punished Mohammad Wasim Jr with another towering 77m maximum. After the 81-run opening partnership ended with the dismissal of Lhuan-dre Pretorius on 46(40), de Kock raised a 153-run stand with Tony de Zorzi, the second-highest partnership for South Africa against Pakistan in Pakistan. Tony de Zorzi also received a revival after Faheem Ashraf spilt his chance at deep mid-wicket. He eventually holed out to Ashraf off Saim Ayub and returned with a swift 76(63). Quinton de Kock stayed unbeaten and completed the 270-run chase with 59 balls to spare, with stand-in captain Matthew Breetzke giving him company at the other end on 17* off 21. Earlier, South Africa's formidable bowling duo, Nandre Burger (4/46) and Nqaba Peter (3/55), wreaked havoc on Pakistan's top order, reducing them to 22/3 within five overs. Burger's fiery spell claimed the wickets of Fakhar Zaman, Babar Azam, and Mohammad Rizwan, severely restricting Pakistan's early scoring opportunities. Pakistan's middle order, led by Saim Ayub's 53 and Salman Ali Agha's 69, struggled to build momentum, with both batting at strike rates below 90. Mohammad Nawaz provided crucial resistance, scoring a career-best 59, including two sixes, in a late partnership with Agha, helping Pakistan reach a modest total of 269/9. Discover the Future of NYC: Mamdani’s Vision Unfolds

For Dave Portnoy, the allure of New York City has significantly waned since Zohran Mamdani triumphed in the mayoral election. The charismatic founder and CEO of Barstool Sports, known to many as El Presidente, is now contemplating a dramatic shift away from the city he once called home. Portnoy expressed his discontent to the Daily Mail, commenting on the city’s current business climate. “There is zero value to being in New York for us right now,” he stated, indicating that Barstool Sports might soon pack its bags. “There are many cities that are far more pro-business than [New York City], which is clearly anti-business.” Though he no longer resides in New York, favoring residences in Miami, Montauk, and Nantucket, Portnoy is not directly affected by Mamdani’s proposed tax increase targeting high earners. However, it’s not the financial implications that concern him the most. The democratic socialist’s intention to hike corporate taxes is less troubling to Portnoy than the potential cultural shift he sees on the horizon. Portnoy is pondering the relocation of Barstool’s New York office along with its numerous employees due to his ideological differences with Mamdani. “The taxes are the least of it for me,” he elaborated. “He is a communist. I am a capitalist. I believe in the virtues of success and wealth, whereas he seems to view it as a sin. I value hard work and its rewards; he appears to want to hand out trophies to everyone.” Clearly, Portnoy’s objections go beyond mere fiscal policies, reflecting a deeper philosophical divide between him and the city’s new leadership. Portnoy’s list of grievances didn’t end there. For starters, Mamdani previously voiced support for defunding police. And while he has since apologized to local cops, Portnoy still views the mayor-elect as an enemy of New York’s Finest. ‘I respect the NYPD and first responders,’ Portnoy continued. ‘He hates the NYPD and wants to defund them.’ Portnoy did not specifically mention the pro-Palestinian mayor-elect’s views on the Middle East or his critiques of US foreign policy, but the staunch Israel supporter accused Mamdani of being ‘a terrorist sympathizer.’ ‘I hate terrorists,’ Portnoy said. ‘He hates America. I love America.’ The Daily Mail has reached out to Mamdani’s spokesman for a response to Portnoy’s accusation. The first Muslim ever elected mayor of New York has long been accused of sympathizing with terrorists – claims he’s dismissed as ‘racist, baseless attacks.’ As for Mamdani’s resume, which includes stints as a foreclosure prevention counselor, an assemblyman in Queens and one-time rapper, Portnoy is decidedly unimpressed. ‘He has never had a real job in his life,’ Portnoy told the Daily Mail. ‘I worked my ass off to get where I am. ‘To be honest I don’t respect anything about him.’ Asked for any potential counterargument Mamdani, 34, could offer to change his mind, the 48-year-old media mogul balked: ‘There isn’t much a communist could say that would make me want to do business in NYC or any other city in the world.’ Were the mayor-elect his only consideration, that would be Portnoy’s final word on the subject. But Barstool Sports’ New York offices staff hundreds of employees, all of whom would face a tough decision if Portnoy’s pirate ship raised anchor. ‘Barstool Sports isn’t just me,’ Portnoy wrote. ‘We have lots of people who work for us and I’m sure some voted for Mamdani. Lots of people have built their lives around working in NYC. ‘I’m not sure it’s fair or that I’m ready to move the company just based on my personal disdain for everything about this guy.’ Personal disdain aside, Portnoy sees Mamdani as bad for business, which could prove to be the deciding factor for Barstool Sports and other local employers. As financial expert, entrepreneur and the president of Exit Stage Left advisors Ted Jenkin told the Daily Mail, New York was already a difficult place for businesses before Mamdani’s imminent arrival at City Hall. ‘Class A real estate in New York is twice the price that it is in Dallas, let alone income taxes,’ Jenkin said. ‘The companies that also have a flexible hybrid schedule maybe ask themselves, if people don’t come in five days a week, what’s the point?’ Jenkin named tax-friendly states like Texas, Florida, Tennessee and Nevada as three potential landing spots for media companies like Barstool Sports. And while he acknowledged Mamdani’s plans to lighten the financial load for the city’s less fortunate, Jenkin predicts the mayor-elect’s tax hikes will ultimately exceed the numbers he proposed during the campaign. ‘I think the programs are going to be extremely costly,’ Jenkin said. ‘And if you look at states like California and also Massachusetts, where they’ve instituted millionaires’ taxes, this is the strategy of a socialist mayor, is to basically use wealth taxes and higher income taxes to pay for free programs.’ Just how much Mamdani’s tax plans will impact Barstool Sports staffers remains a mystery, and Portnoy isn’t pretending to have a crystal ball. He envisions bad things for New York City under Mamdani, but for the time being, Portnoy’s bigger concern is his company. Last week, he even said he was considering moving the offices a few miles away into New Jersey. ‘I’ve given that a lot of thought… going to Hoboken or Jersey City or something,’ Portnoy said last week on a YouTube livestream. ‘I don’t want to f***ing have an office (in Manhattan). But then we have all those people who, like, that f***s up their life because I hate the guy. L ‘ike, all the people in the New York office have to go to Jersey City or … Hoboken. So it’s a Catch-22.’ As for now, he told the Daily Mail: ‘I’ll keep my options open and see what happens.’

South Korean power plant collapse leaves 1 dead, 6 trapped under rubble

A 60-meter (196-foot) tower collapsed during demolition work at a decommissioned thermal power plant in the South Korean city of Ulsan, killing at least one person and leaving six others trapped under the rubble, officials said Friday. Rescuers located one of the trapped people, who is feared dead, but have been unable to remove the person from the rubble. Two others were pulled to safety shortly after responding to the collapse on Thursday afternoon. Another worker, who was rescued later, was pronounced dead at a hospital early Friday, said Kim Jeong-shik, an official with Ulsan’s fire department. Kim said the search for the remaining people was suspended Friday morning due to concerns over unstable rubble and will resume after stabilization work. “We have deployed rescue dogs and they’re conducting searches now. We also have a lot of detection equipment on site, including thermal cameras and endoscopes,” Kim said in a briefing. Officials said earlier that the first two people rescued escaped life-threatening injuries. More than 340 rescue workers and around 90 vehicles and equipment had been deployed to the site for search and rescue efforts. Following the collapse, South Korean President Lee Jae Myung instructed officials to mobilize all available personnel and equipment for the rescue effort while ensuring the safety of rescue workers operating in the rubble. The plant was decommissioned in 2021 after 40 years of operation. Officials said the boiler tower — one of three at the site — had been weakened as it was being prepared for demolition.

Boston School Committee approves changes to exam school admissions

After months of heated public discourse and deliberation, the Boston School Committee approved the latest round of changes to exam school admissions. “There is no perfect policy, but we think these changes will lead to a system that is overall clearer and more stable,” said BPS Superintendent Mary Skipper, introducing the proposal for a vote at Wednesday night’s school committee meeting. “Our goal remains the same, to create an equitable, predictable and stable policy that students and families can easily navigate and understand.” After five years straight of tweaking and re-tweaking the exam school admissions policy, BPS officials began to seek a more long-term solution over the summer and put forth a proposal in September. The newly approved policy will go into effect immediately for the 2026-27 admission cycle, and officials are aiming to keep it in place for at least three years to “have more consistent trend data.” The proposal was approved Wednesday night with four in favor, members Rachel Skerritt, Quoc Tran, Jeri Robinson, and Michael O’Neill. Members Stephen Alkins and Rafaela Polanco Garcia voted against it, and member Brandon Cardet-Hernandez was absent. The changes, which have had critics from all sides, edit the policy in several ways. The policy uses a geographic-based socioeconomic tier structure and bonus points in the goal of promoting equity and diversity in Boston’s elite exam schools, Boston Latin School, Boston Latin Academy and the O’Bryant school. First, the new policy removes school-based points, which awarded 10 additional points to students with higher percentages of economically disadvantaged students. The removal was “because they are hard to explain and difficult to justify,” Skipper said. Second, housing-based points decrease from 15 bonus points to 10. Housing points are awarded to students experiencing homelessness, living in public housing, or in the care of the Massachusetts Department of Children and Families. “The selection of 15 points was chosen to be higher than the number of school-based points, which was 10 at the time,” Skipper said. “Our analysis of the 25-26 admission cycle shows the actual difference in composite scores for students who qualify for housing-based points and students who do not qualify is 10 points.” Third, the policy adds a “citywide round,” meaning the first 20% of seats at each school will go to the highest composite scores solely based on the student’s GPA and test composite score. After the citywide round, Skipper said, the remaining 80% of seats would be distributed equally across socioeconomic tiers. And finally, the proposal keeps the current four socioeconomic tiers, with the seats distributed based on the number of students in each rather than the number of applicants. “It’s important the vote happened tonight to ensure families have all of the information about the process before this year’s residency verification deadline for non-BPS families happens on Nov. 21,” Skipper said. “We’ve heard consistently this timeline is important for families.” Some families have been critical of the proposed changes, arguing they would decrease the impact of the original policy in increasing diversity, while others have argued the changes continue a policy that makes it harder for certain high-performing students to gain admission to the schools. The debate continued Wednesday night, with many speakers lobbying against and some for the changes. Many School Committee members broadly agreed on the need to take action on the issue Wednesday night and move forward from the debate. Of the two school committee members who voted against the proposal, Alkins said he was in favor of keeping the policy as it was to continue to monitor the current progress. “Equity begs me to see a little bit more of the nuance, and the simulations that have been presented compromise the admissions to our most representative populations within the district,” said Alkins. “And that goes against the original ethos of the policy for me.” Polanco Garcia cited many parties who reached out to her and said “this policy aims to balance merit and equity, but its real impact will depend on the implementation of complementary supports.” Without equitable investments in K-8 schools, she continued, “existing academic gaps will continue to reproduce themselves, limiting real access for many young people.” “I do know that deep in my heart, this is at least an improvement,” said member Quoc Tran. “This new policy is at least an improvement in moving forward with equity.” Committee Chair Robinson said, though she may not like all of the options, “stopping this process now only frustrates the actual families for whom this will be a next step.”

Horror movie crew member, 64, electrocuted on set near New Orleans

A crew member was electrocuted after he came into contact with a live power line while on an independent horror movie set in Louisiana Monday, police said. James “Trapper” McEvoy, 64, was working as a grip for the horror flick “Kill Me Now,” which started filming in the New Orleans area earlier this week. McEvoy was working high up on a bucket truck when he hit an energized power line and was electrocuted around 1 p.m. Monday, the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office told WWL. The Magnolia Lane Plantation, where the crew was filming at the time, was previously featured in the 2013 Oscar-winner, “12 Years a Slave.” Jefferson Parish Coroner’s Office confirmed that the electrocution was likely what killed McEvoy, though other preliminary tests that could flag contributing factors, including a toxicology report, are still pending. “We are devastated by the tragic loss of James ‘Trapper’ McEvoy, a beloved member of the New Orleans film community. Our hearts go out to his family, friends and all who knew him and worked alongside him during this difficult time,” Lynn Gilman Williams, a lead producer on “Kill Me Now,” wrote in a statement obtained by Deadline. McEvoy was a member of the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees, which shared a vague statement regarding “the loss of one of our fellow members” during “a tragic incident on a production filming in Louisiana.” McEvoy wasn’t mentioned by name, but many of his close friends highlighted that the post was about him in the comments. “Our deepest condolences are with the family who lost a loved one, and the crew who lost a friend and colleague. All workers have a right to safety on the job,” the IATSE wrote on Facebook. “May Trapper’s family and friends be comforted, may his memory be a blessing, and may his legacy be safer sets for all,” one man commented. “I had immense respect for this man. He treated people with a level respect and professionalism that isn’t common of men of his experience and expertise. Rest easy Trapper, you will be missed,” another added. McEvoy worked on many critically acclaimed films as a rigging grip, typically the person responsible for setting up the camera and lighting equipment. He worked behind the scenes on many classics from the late 2000s, including “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button,” according to his IMDB. McEvoy was also an executive producer on “Whiteness,” a historical dramedy that is currently in post-production, according to the website.

Unveiling the Faces Behind the Louisville UPS Plane Crash: Meet the Captain and First Officer

The tragic incident of the UPS plane crash in Kentucky has led to the unveiling of the identities of the doomed aircraft’s captain and crew. As search efforts persist to discover the remaining victims, the aviation community and families alike are left in mourning. UPS has confirmed the identities of the crew aboard the McDonnell Douglas MD-11, which included Captain Richard Wartenberg, First Officer Lee Truitt, and Relief Officer Dana Diamond. Sadly, they all perished instantly when UPS Flight 2976 crashed and ignited into a massive fireball. The aircraft slammed into industrial buildings near Louisville’s Muhammad Ali International Airport, setting the area ablaze shortly after 5 p.m. on Tuesday. The devastating crash claimed the lives of nine additional individuals on the ground, tragically including a child. The search continues for others who remain unaccounted for in the aftermath of the catastrophe. Among those feared lost is Angela ‘Angie’ Anderson, a 45-year-old mother of two from Louisville. She was last known to be at Grade A Auto Parts & Scrap Metal Recycling, disposing of scrap metal at the time of the crash. Her whereabouts remain unknown, heightening fears that she may have been one of the victims caught in the inferno. Others remain missing, including mother-of-two Angela ‘Angie’ Anderson, 45, of Louisville, may have perished in the fire. She had been getting rid of scrap metal at Grade A Auto Parts & Scrap Metal Recycling at the time, and has not been seen or heard from since. Anderson’s boyfriend, Donald Henderson, 55, had meant to go with her to the shop, but was too tired after a long day of work, he told WDRB. ‘We’ve been meaning to do it, but [I’ve] been working every day,’ Henderson said. ‘I told her I’d take her and it was 4:30[pm]. I was like: “It’s too late by the time we get over there.”‘ Despite her boyfriend’s protests, the mother-of-two said she’d ‘take care of it’ and off she went. Now, days later, Henderson and 64-year-old William Moreland, the father of her two children, are desperately waiting for answers. The pair raced down on their bikes to the victims’ reunification center, hoping to find her. ‘As soon as I heard,’ Moreland told the outlet. ‘[We] come [sic] over here and see what’s going on,’ Henderson said. ‘I know we ain’t the only ones.’ Anderson’s friend, Angel O’Rafferty, who sent the Daily Mail a photo of Anderson, said there haven’t been any updates on the mother’s location or status. ‘Angela Anderson!!! I love you with all my heart. PLEASE GOD bring her to safety along with the others that have not been found from The Plane Wreck in Louisville, Kentucky,’ she wrote on Facebook. ‘She arrived at the site where the plane crashed at 5:11 pm the plane hit at 5:12pm and hasn’t been heard from since yesterday… please keep these people in your prayers.’ Grade A is currently missing three employees, including Jonny Louck. ‘John is a very special type of guy, he’d give you his shirt off his back. He’s always there for you when no one else is, unfortunately he is missing after the plane crash,’ Kyler Collins, who works at the shop and was not on shift at the time, told the Lexington Herald Leader. But as recovery efforts continued overnight, five victims were located. The flight, which was destined for Hawaii, had been cleared for takeoff and had cleared the airport’s fence. ‘Shortly after clearing that fence, it made impact with structures and the terrain off of the airport property,’ the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) said. ‘A post-impact fire ensued, which covers approximately almost a half of a mile.’ Authorities have already determined that one of the plane’s three engines detached from its left wing as the wide-body jet was rolling down the runway. The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating the crash, including looking into all maintenance prior to it arriving and taking off in Louisville. The plane was in San Antonio, Texas, for six weeks prior to arriving in Kentucky. UPS told NTSB that ‘no work has been done’ on the aircraft prior to takeoff, the government agency said at a press conference on Thursday afternoon. ‘Words can’t express the sorrow we feel over the heartbreaking Flight 2976 accident,’ UPS Executive Vice President Nando Cesarone said as he released the crew member’s names on Thursday. He added in a video statement that the company is focusing on ‘the needs of everyone affected.’ Fifteen people were injured in the devastating crash and were transported to local hospitals to be treated for injuries ranging from minor to severe burns, blast injuries, shrapnel injuries and smoke inhalation, WLWT reports. Of those, 13 were discharged from the hospital and two others remained in critical condition, according to WLKY. Matt Sweets had more than 95 percent of his body burned and was taken to the hospital in critical condition, his sister-in-law, Fawn Armstrong, revealed in a GoFundMe, which has raised more than $44,000. He was ‘he was caught in the fireball aftermath,’ Armstrong said. ‘He is currently in critical condition and faces a long road of recovery and rehabilitation. We are praying hard and holding on to every bit of hope God gives us. ‘Matt is the sole provider for Brooke and their children. With him in the hospital for the foreseeable future, the family’s everyday needs like bills, groceries, and basic living expenses will add up quickly. The last thing they need is to worry about finances while they are fighting for Matt’s life and strength.’ The Daily Mail has reached out to Armstrong and family for comment. The plane’s black box has been recovered by NTSB, and information is expected to be able to be extracted, despite the heat damage. It remains unclear what may have caused the engine to fall off the 34-year-old aircraft. The NTSB is still doing a ‘delayering search’ near the crash site and collecting debris from local business, Louisville Mayor Craig Greenberg said. This is a breaking news story and will be updated.

FAA funding problems hit airports in California, elsewhere

(The Center Square) - As Christine Finch helped her father, Graham Finch, gather his luggage at the San Francisco International Airport, she was worried about how flight delays caused by the federal shutdown would affect their travel plans. “Am I going to be able to get Dad home?” Christine said of her first thought when hearing about the impending flight delays. Christine, who is flying her father home to New Zealand, said she's also worried whether she'll be able to get back to Canada to go to work. “I don’t come back for a month, so I’m hoping it will be all solved by then, and it won’t affect me on my way back up,” Christine told The Center Square at the airport Thursday afternoon. Otherwise, she noted, “I won’t be able to get back up to get back to work.” That's the possible personal impact as the longest federal government shutdown in U.S. history continues. Starting Friday, the 38th day of the shutdown, flights up and down the West Coast are expected to be delayed, according to the Federal Aviation Administration. On Thursday, the FAA released a list of the airports that will be affected by reduced flights. They include 12 major ones in the West, stretching from California north to Alaska, west to Hawaii and east to Colorado and Texas. FAA Administrator Bryan Bedford, announced Wednesday the FAA will reduce flights by a total of 10% in what he called 40 “high-volume markets” throughout the United States. Those cuts are expected to take effect on Friday in an effort to make airline flights safe as shortages in staffing are made worse by the funding lapse caused by the shutdown. West Coast airports on the list include a few in California: Los Angeles International, San Diego International, San Francisco International and Ontario International. Elsewhere in the West, the affected airports include Anchorage International, Seattle/Tacoma International, Portland International, Las Vegas Harry Reid International, Phoenix Sky Harbor International, Salt Lake City International, Honolulu International, Denver International and Dallas/Fort Worth International. Travelers flying out of San Francisco International on Thursday told The Center Square they were concerned about the travel plans of friends and family, despite their own good timing in traveling before the reductions. “We’re really worried about our friends traveling,” said Della Shapen, who was catching a flight to Denmark with her husband, Kevin, and their dog, Jetta. “We’re really fortunate that we’re getting ahead of it.” Others travelers to Europe said they weren’t worried their flights were going to be delayed. They saw the words “on time” flashed on nearby screens showing that most flights flying out of San Francisco on Thursday were departing as scheduled. “I was monitoring the situation with the shutdown, but today, maybe we’re lucky,” said Raphael Heisen, who said he was flying to Germany. “The situation … I’m truly worried about that," Heisen told The Center Square about the shutdown. According to a report published by EY-Parthenon, the federal government shutdown could cost the American economy $7 billion a week, leading to a 0.1% decline in gross domestic product growth. Federal employees, who include Transportation Security Agency workers at airports, aren’t getting paid their wages because of the federal government shutdown - leading to many of these workers calling out sick, according to Forbes.

Ruben Amorim names the 'maverick' Man United star who deserves to be compared with the best and singles out player for elite mentality

Matheus Cunha has a maverick quality that gets into the heads of his opponents, says Manchester United’s head coach Ruben Amorim. Cunha has rapidly become a fans’ favourite since joining United from Wolves for £62.5million in the summer, even earning comparisons with Old Trafford legend Eric Cantona. Although the Brazilian has only scored once in 10 games for Amorim’s side, his willingness to get on the ball and get under the skin of other teams has endeared him to United supporters. Amorim has also been impressed by the 26-year-old’s ability to unsettle opponents, saying: ‘Cunha is a maverick who does things that. It's hard to find in some players because he plays with the ball, but he has an aura about him that can do something to the opponent's heads, and that is really important.’ The United boss is also delighted with one of his other big summer signings, £71m forward Bryan Mbeumo, who has contributed five goals and an assist so far. Speaking to the Men In Blazers Media Network, he added: ‘It’s the mentality of these two players. Bryan is really direct and we missed that last year. You can see in the fourth goal that we scored against Brighton, he can sense when the ball is going to our defender and he is already running into position. The small things that people don't see are massive to turn us into a more dangerous team.’ Amorim also paid tribute to Harry Maguire who has revived his Old Trafford career to the extent that the club may consider extending his contract before the end of the year when he will able to open talks with foreign clubs. Amorim believes Maguire has been particularly effective in a season that has seen more importance than ever placed on set-pieces. ‘When people talk about Harry, it’s his mentality to overcome all these problems that he had, especially with the England fans,’ said Amorim. ‘You can help the other guys to understand that things will change and you will survive. You will not die. You can overcome any situation. ‘But for me, I would like to start with his quality as a player. He's a very, very good player that, like any other player, needs confidence. He is really really good on the ball. He is so strong defending set-pieces and really strong attacking set-pieces. As you can see, our league in this moment is a lot of about set-pieces. ‘I just try to use the best footballer that Harry Maguire is and then also to bring the mentality that he showed us during years to overcome very difficult situations.’ Watch Ruben Amorim’s interview with Men In Blazers at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y-FZKssfwdQ
