Delhi weather update: Winter arrives as National Capital records coldest November day in three years amid ‘very poor’ AQI, temperature drops to...

Delhi had an unusually cold morning on Sunday, with a minimum temperature of 9°C, approximately 4.5 degrees below the typical temperature for this time of year. This marks the coldest November day for the city since 2022, when the temperature dropped to 7.3°C. In comparison, the lowest temperatures recorded in November 2023 and 2024 were 9.2°C and 9.5°C, respectively. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasts shallow fog for Monday morning. The maximum temperature is anticipated to be around 25°C, while the minimum may stay around 9°C. Despite the cold, Delhi experienced dense smog on Sunday. Delhi-NCR AQI The national capital woke up to dense smog on Monday morning as the average Air Quality Index (AQI) stood at 359 at 7 am, falling under the 'very poor' category despite the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP)-III in effect across Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR), according to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB). A layer of thick smog engulfed several areas, showing little to no improvement from Sunday morning's AQI of 385. Bawana recorded the highest AQI level of 427 at 7 am, falling under the 'severe' category. In contrast, NSIT Dwarka recorded the lowest AQI of 225, according to the data by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB). Visuals from India Gate and Kartavya Path are blanketed in a layer of toxic smog as the AQI in the area is 341 in the 'very poor' category, as claimed by the CPCB. Chandani Chowk recorded an AQI of 383, RK Puram 366, ITO 394, Punjabi Bagh 384, Patparganj 369, Pusa 365, and Dwaraka Sector-8 356. A layer of toxic smog lingers in the air of Anand Vihar as the Central Pollution Control Board claimed that the Air Quality Index around the area is 383, categorised as 'very poor'. The thick smog, along with deteriorating air quality, mercury continued to hover around the 9 Degree Celsius mark, with some areas recording even lower temperatures. As per CPCB classification, an AQI between 0-50 is considered 'good', 51-100 'satisfactory', 101-200 'moderate', 201-300 'poor', 301-400 'very poor', and 401-500 'severe'. GRAP-3 curbs imposed in Delhi-NCR Following the deteriorating air quality in the national capital, the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) III was implemented on November 11 across Delhi by the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM). The measures aim to control emissions through stricter restrictions on construction, vehicular movement and industrial operations. Under GRAP-III, curbs include a ban on most non-essential construction activities, restrictions on BS-III petrol and BS-IV diesel four-wheelers, suspension of classes for students up to Class 5 with a shift to hybrid or online learning, curbs on industrial operations dependent on non-clean fuel, and a ban on non-emergency diesel generator sets.

Sonbhadra Mine Collapse: Death toll rises to 5, rescue operations underway as several feared trapped

The Sonbhadra mine collapse has claimed five lives till now, according to reports released by Hindustan on Monday, following the recovery of three additional bodies. The incident occurred on Saturday afternoon at the Billi Markundi mining site during drilling operations, trapping several laborers under rocks and debris. The body of 28-year-old Raju Singh Gaud was recovered on Saturday night. With the discovery of three more workers, the confirmed death toll has now reached four. Officials are continuing search and rescue efforts, hoping to find any other individuals who may still be trapped in the mine. An FIR has been lodged by Obra police against Krishna Mining Works, the firm holding the lease for the site, and two of its staff members, Madhusudan Singh and Dilip Keshri, under Section 105 (culpable homicide). Rescue operation underway Divisional Commissioner Rajesh Prakash said senior officials and specialised teams are on the ground. "NDRF and SDRF teams are deployed. NDRF DIG and Commandant are here too. We are trying to complete the rescue operation as soon as possible. It is not possible to quote any figures at this time," he said. Additional Director General of Police (ADG) Zone Varanasi Piyush Mordia said in a video message, "On 15th November, in Sonbhadra district, a stone mine collapse incident was reported. Workers are feared trapped here. NDRF, SDRF, CISF, Sonbhadra Police, and Fire Department teams are on the scene to rescue the people. Operation is underway..." Meanwhile, according to a report by TOI, locals claim that 18 labourers were working at the site at the time of the collapse, though officials suggest that seven or eight may have been trapped under the debris. Authorities confirmed that the mine has a valid lease until 2026 and permission for blasting. The District Magistrate stated that the incident occurred while drilling to create holes for blasting, and a detailed investigation will determine any lapses or negligence. Teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) have been deployed to carry out rescue efforts. Heavy machinery, along with specialised personnel, is being used to remove the debris and widen access to the collapsed area as quickly as possible.

Assam Bans Inter-District Movement Of Live Pigs Amid African Swine Fever Outbreak - Northeast Today

Guwahati, Nov 17: The Assam government has banned the inter-district movement of live pigs across the state following a sharp rise in African Swine Fever (ASF) cases, officials said on Sunday. An order issued by the Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Department also prohibits the sale of pork in seven districts reporting a high concentration of ASF cases: Dhemaji, Kamrup, Lakhimpur, Sivasagar, Darrang, Jorhat, and Dibrugarh. The department highlighted that ASF, which has a 100 percent mortality rate among pigs, has severely affected Assam’s piggery sector. Since January, 297 ASF epicentres have been reported across the state, including 84 cases identified in October alone. Citing provisions of the Prevention and Control of Infectious and Contagious Diseases in Animals Act, 2009, the department stated that the ban on inter-district movement of live pigs is effective immediately and will remain in place until further notice to prevent further spread of the disease.

American West eyes monster copper corridor at Storm.

American West Metals has taken another major leap forward at its Storm copper project on Somerset Island in Nunavut, Canada after defining a monster 4.1km-long geochemical copper anomaly that mirrors the structural trend of its known Storm deposits. The newly coined Chevron prospect, identified through regional soil chemistry, spans up to 700 metres in width and is positioned within the same prospective Allen Bay Formation that hosts American West’s growing portfolio of copper deposits at Storm. Company geologists say Chevron ticks every box expected of a large, sediment-hosted copper system. The geometry is strongly suggestive of a structurally controlled corridor, potentially linked to deep-seated graben faults that act as fluid pathways in major copper districts. Crucially, it is completely untested, immediately elevating its ranking as one of the most significant exploration opportunities American West has identified since acquiring the project. The Storm project covers more than 2,200 square kilometres across the uninhabited Somerset Island in the Canadian Arctic. Despite the remoteness, the site boasts an airstrip, a 50-person camp and direct access to established shipping routes, making it one of the few large-scale Arctic copper prospects with genuine near-term development capability. The new Chevron anomaly sits within a broader regional pipeline of prospects that have been steadily delivering strong geological signals. At the Squall target, assays just received confirm additional zones of high-grade copper sulphides, in a geological setting similar to the Corona deposit 1.3km to the east. Results include 4.5m at 1.4% copper and 2.6g/t silver from 158.5m, with a higher-grade internal interval of 1.5m at 3.6% copper and 5g/t silver. Further west, sulphides have also been intersected in the Tornado area, expanding the prospective footprint along the Midway–Storm–Tornado structural corridor. The ongoing drilling continues to validate the idea that Storm is not a single deposit, but part of an emerging district-scale copper system with stacked horizons at shallow and moderate depths. Only weeks ago, American West revealed some spectacular drill numbers from the Cyclone copper deposit, including grades reaching 27.3% copper and 80g/t silver, further demonstrating the project’s ongoing capacity to deliver standout intercepts. With new soil data, drilling success and multiple geophysical anomalies aligning, the company now has a constantly growing portfolio of near-surface and deeper targets. Management says the Chevron anomaly could materially expand Storm’s current 17.5-million-tonne JORC resource of 1.2% copper and 3.4g/t silver, particularly as follow-up programs are already being planned. The discovery of a second large-scale structural corridor of equal magnitude to Storm itself is a rare development in sediment-hosted copper belts, and American West believes several more targets of interest now warrant testing. Dave O’Neil, Managing Director of American West said: “The Chevron area has no prior exploration, including geophysics, and therefore ranks as an outstanding new copper target, highlighting the potential for further large discoveries within the project area.” Adding further momentum, results from the recent airborne mobile magnetotellurics survey have lit up a 16km conductive feature beginning just 200m below surface north of Cyclone. Another large, sheet-like conductor at 400m depth could correlate with copper horizons already hit in earlier diamond drilling. Two additional cross-cutting conductive bodies in the Midway and Tornado/Blizzard zones reinforce the potential for multiple stacked systems across the trend. Taken together, the combination of shallow high-grade hits, untested multi-kilometre anomalies, deep conductive bodies and multiple surface expressions of copper sulphides gives American West one of the most compelling exploration pipelines in the global junior copper sector. With copper now firmly on the US Critical minerals list and demand surging on the back of electrification, projects offering both shallow mining optionality and district-scale upside are now at a premium…….and it would seem that American West has just that.

India Signs First-Ever LPG Import Deal With US: Hardeep Puri

Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas Hardeep Singh Puri announced on Monday that public sector oil companies have signed their first-ever one-year agreement to import liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) from the United States. The move marks a major step in bolstering the country’s long-term energy security and diversifying its supply sources. The minister announced the development in a social media post, describing it as a “historic first” for India’s LPG sector. He wrote in his post, "A historic first! One of the largest and the world's fastest-growing LPG market opens up to the United States. In our endeavour to provide secure, affordable supplies of LPG to the people of India, we have been diversifying our LPG sourcing. In a significant development, Indian PSU oil companies have successfully concluded a 1-year deal for imports of around 2.2 MTPA LPG." According to Puri, the agreement covers 2.2 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) for the 2026 contract year. This accounts for nearly 10 per cent of India’s annual LPG imports, marking a notable shift as these supplies will be sourced from the US Gulf Coast. He noted that this is the first structured long-term contract for American LPG destined for the Indian market. Pricing Benchmarks And Industry Engagement The minister explained that the deal has been priced against the Mount Belvieu benchmark, a widely recognised global reference point for LPG. He also revealed that teams from Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL), Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL), and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) had engaged with leading US producers in recent months to finalise the agreement. These engagements underline India’s push to diversify energy sources at a time when global supply chains remain susceptible to geopolitical and market fluctuations. Affordable LPG Beyond diversification, Puri spotlighted the government’s continued focus on shielding Indian households from rising international fuel prices. He noted that despite global LPG rates jumping over 60 per cent, Prime Minister Narendra Modi ensured that Ujjwala beneficiaries paid only Rs 500–550 per cylinder, while the actual price exceeded Rs 1,100. This required the Government of India to absorb more than Rs 40,000 crore in subsidies.

We're big fans of spuds in our household. Whether it's jacket potatoes with baked beans , potatoes mashed to creamy perfection , or the unbeatable roast potato , we can't get enough. We usually have a couple sitting on the kitchen counter, but if they're not used immediately, they're stored in the pantry. Despite the pantry being their ideal home, I've noticed that my potatoes start to sprout after just a few days. Rather than letting them reach this stage and end up on our compost heap, I decided to see if I could freeze them. Potatoes can survive up to a year in the freezer, but according to the experts at Love Food Hate Waste, they're best consumed within three months. However, I couldn't just lob the starchy veg directly into the freezer; there were a few steps I had to follow first. The initial step is to partially cook them. It's recommended to only freeze cooked or partially cooked potatoes, as raw ones contain a lot of water. This water freezes and, when defrosted, turns the potatoes mushy and grainy. To freeze them, I began by peeling the potatoes. This isn't necessary, but it's useful as blanching is more effective without the skin. I then plunged the potatoes into a pot of cold water and put them on the hob on high heat until they boiled. As I was dealing with medium-sized potatoes, I let them cook for 10 minutes. Afterwards, I moved the potatoes to a colander for draining before laying them out on kitchen paper towels to soak up any excess moisture. They were then sliced into thick rounds. I placed the potatoes in a single layer on a baking tray and popped them into the freezer for four hours. Post the four-hour mark, the potatoes were frozen and ready to be shifted into a freezer-safe storage bag. A month post-freezing, I took out half of the spuds to thaw in the fridge overnight, then finished off their cooking in boiling water until they were cooked through. The taste was just as if I'd stored them in the pantry. Three months later, I cooked the remaining half of the potatoes, and they still tasted fresh. Freezing potatoes not only retains their freshness but also saves you time when it comes to prepping them for cooking.

Given the duo were released from their contracts before any R360 deal has been announced, former prop forward Aaron Woods has questioned whether Lomax and Papenhuyzen have found a loophole around a potential 10-year NRL ban. Lomax could be facing a 10-year ban from the NRL if he links up with R360. “Does he cop the 10-year suspension? It’s very similar to Papenhuyzen though because Paps got the release. Now they don’t have a contract with the NRL,” Woods said on Triple M. “It was under the information that they were only going to get a 10-year ban if they were still contracted.” According to Code Sports, the terms of the release dictate that Lomax will be unable to play for another NRL club until 2029 unless the Eels give him permission to do so. Tuivasa-Sheck has been heavily linked to a switch to R360. While Lomax signalled to the Eels a potential desire to head to R360 several months ago, the club reportedly caught wind of Lomax’s chat with the veteran outside back. Zac Lomax reportedly approached Warriors star Roger Tuivasa-Sheck following this Round 26 between Parramatta and New Zealand. While a big blow to Parramatta’s chances of pushing for a top-eight berth in 2026, Lomax’s release frees up nearly $650,000 while the 26-year-old is expected to earn at least double that should he link up with R360. The Australian has reported that R360 is offering NRL and Australian rugby union players tax free deals worth more than US$1million (A$1.5 million) per season. The Eels have already landed gun playmaker Jonah Pezet for next year and could continue to look to the open market for another marquee player, especially given Pezet will be departing the club in 2027 for the Brisbane Broncos. PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Jalen Hurts scored the only touchdown in an otherwise feeble effort from the Philadelphia Eagles’ offense, and it was enough to lead them to a 16-9 win over the Detroit Lions, who failed on every fourth-down try Sunday night. The Eagles (8-2) are the only team in the NFC East with more than three wins and the second one in the conference to eight victories, putting them in contention to take the top seed and earn home-field advantage as the Super Bowl champions go for a repeat. Hurts threw for only 135 yards, reigning Offensive Player of the Year Saquon Barkley ran for 83 and former 1,000-yard receivers A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith combined for nine catches for 57 yards. Williams celebrated by jumping onto the goal post padding and bear-hugging the upright, which earned him a 15-yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalty. On a blustery night in Philly, those lost yards cost the Lions when Jake Bates was wide right on the 48-yard extra point. Bates did kick a 54-yard field goal with 1:58 left. What can Brown do for you? Hurts tried to force the ball to an unhappy Brown early after yet another week of complaints from the wide receiver about his role in the offense. Brown’s production has severely declined this season -- he was targeted just three times last week at Green Bay -- and he took to social media afterward to express his displeasure, saying on Twitch that fantasy owners should drop him from their teams. Brown — who appeared to give up on at least one route in the third quarter — finished with seven catches for 49 yards against the Lions.
