Canada eyes decade-long $2.8 bn uranium pact with India as ties improve

Days after Prime Minister Narendra Modi met his Canadian counterpart Mark Carney in Johannesburg on the sidelines of the G20 Summit, Ottawa is likely to finalise a deal to supply New Delhi with uranium, The Globe and Mail reported. Canada’s proposed agreement is expected to run for a decade, valued at $2.8 billion. The fuel would reportedly come from Cameco Corp, the country’s leading uranium producer. The arrangement is likely to form part of a wider framework for nuclear cooperation between the two nations. The report, citing sources, added that there is a possibility of the terms being modified before the announcement is made. This comes nearly two years after the bilateral ties between India and Canada were strained after Ottawa accused New Delhi of being involved in the killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a proscribed Khalistani terrorist. India-Canada resume trade talks After PM Modi held a meeting with Carney in South Africa, the two sides agreed to restart trade talks for a new deal. According to a statement from PM Modi's office, "The leaders agreed to begin negotiations on a high-ambition Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA), aimed at doubling bilateral trade to $50 billion by 2030." "Both sides reaffirmed their longstanding civil nuclear cooperation and noted the ongoing discussions on expanding collaboration, including through long-term uranium supply arrangements," the statement added. The resumption of discussions underscores an improvement in ties between the two nations, coming at a time when Carney is seeking to broaden Canada’s trade relationships beyond its largest partner, the United States. India-Canada uranium supply In 2015, India and Canada signed a five-year agreement to supply Cameco uranium to India, valued at about $350-million at the time based on uranium prices. According to the report, the pending agreement will be a new pact rather than the renewal of the 2015 deal. India currently operates about 25 nuclear reactors and is building six more, data from the World Nuclear Association show. A large share of its running units are pressurised heavy-water reactors based on Canada’s Candu technology. Any wider nuclear partnership between New Delhi and Ottawa, beyond a uranium supply agreement, could also involve Canadian plans to develop a commercial small modular reactor that can generate revenue. Canada halted shipments of uranium and nuclear equipment to India in the 1970s after Indian scientists used Canadian-supplied technology in their nuclear weapons programme. The two countries later normalised ties with a pact that came into force in 2013. The Canada–India Nuclear Cooperation Agreement created binding assurances that any nuclear material, equipment or technology exchanged between them would be used only for peaceful applications. All such transfers remain under International Atomic Energy Agency safeguards. India-Canada trade Trade ties between Canada and India remain relatively limited. Statistics Canada data for 2024 show Canadian goods exports to India at $5.3 billion, while imports from India totalled about $8 billion. By contrast, Canada shipped nearly $600 billion in goods to the United States and roughly $30 billion to China in the same year.

Egg prices soar to Rs 10 per piece in Assam, consumers reeling from sharp surge

Guwahati, Nov 25: A sudden and sharp rise in egg prices has stunned consumers across Assam, turning a staple protein source into a costly commodity. The price of an egg has increased by Rs 3 within just a couple of days, an increase described unprecedented. The price per egg has touched Rs 10, forcing retailers to sell a plate of 30 eggs at rates between Rs 240 and Rs 260 in the retail market. A retailer at Ganeshguri market said that the soaring wholesale cost has made the situation difficult for small vendors. "Over the last 15 to 20 days, the price has been in-creasing daily. We are buying eggs at Rs 8 per piece now. Until a week ago, a plate cost around Rs 210-Rs 220. But this time the increase has been the highest. If this continues, the price per plate may soon reach Rs 280," he said. According to a trader, egg prices ranged between Rs 190-Rs 210 per plate a month back. "A carton that earlier cost Rs 1400 has now rose to Rs 1550 and even more at places. Even during the Covid-19 induced lockdown, prices never went this high," he said. Residents across the city expressed worry over the rising cost of daily food items. "Eggs are one of the most affordable protein sources for families like ours. Kids want it every day and it is also essential for their nutrition and physical development. The rising prices have made it harder to manage monthly budgets”, said Rina Das, a homemaeker from Maligaon. Another customer, a student preparing for competitive exams, said, "We depend heavily on eggs for meals, especially as hostellers. If prices keep increasing, we might hate to cut down "said Abhijit Kakati of Bhetapara. According to market sources, the sharp rise is not limited to Assam but is being seen across the country. Assam, which relies heavily on supplies from other States, is feeling the pressure more intensely. Wholesalers said that the price surge in producing States and stockpiling of eggs in cold storages ahead of Christmas and New Year festivities are key contributing factors. "The demand is increasing everywhere, while supplies are being held back deliberately. This situation is unlikely to stabilise soon," said a wholesaler from Hatigaon. Consumers hoped that the government will intervene to monitor pricing and prevent exploitation. "We request the authorities to look into the matter. Essential food items should not become unaffordable," said a local resident.

India's economy grew at 7.3% in Q2 on rural and govt spending boost: Poll

India's economy likely grew 7.3 per cent in the July-September quarter, according to a Reuters poll of economists, underpinned by strong rural and government expenditure even as private capital spending remained subdued. Household consumption, which accounts for roughly 60 per cent of the economy, strengthened in the previous quarter as rural spending improved on better agricultural output. Urban demand and private investment continued to lag, suggesting uneven growth in Asia's third-largest economy. Government spending, a key driver of growth in recent years, also likely persisted in Q2 of this fiscal year. India remains one of the world's fastest-growing major economies in the face of US President Donald Trump raising tariffs on Indian goods to 50 per cent in August, a move that has contributed to foreign investors pulling out a net $16 billion from Indian equities so far this year. Most economists say the deflator, used to strip out the effect of inflation to show "real" economic growth, was likely very low, making Asia's third-largest economy seem a bit stronger than it really is. Indian gross domestic product (GDP) expanded 7.3 per cent year-on-year in the July-September period, down from a better-than-expected 7.8 per cent in the previous quarter, according to the median forecast from a Reuters poll of 61 economists conducted November 18-24. Estimates ranged from 6.0 per cent to 8.5 per cent. "As far as the drivers of growth are concerned, private consumption and central government capex expenditure will remain the key supports for growth now, while private sector capex investment will likely grow at a slower pace due to the persisting global uncertainty," Kaushik Das, India chief economist at Deutsche Bank, said. The data are due Friday, November 28 at 1030 GMT. Economists are more cautious on the medium-term outlook, predicting GDP growth to slow to 6.8 per cent this quarter and 6.3 per cent in the quarter ending in March 2026. Statistical boost A low deflator - which falls when inflation cools - also provided a boost to the latest data, as it did in the previous quarter, several economists said. "GDP will benefit from a lower base and an exceptionally low deflator, which will artificially prop up real GDP growth ... But nominal GDP growth will likely continue to be weak," Deutsche Bank's Das said. Wholesale price inflation was negligible and consumer inflation was on average around 2 per cent between July-September. Inflation has since fallen to less than half a percent. "Inflation projections now for the rest of the year also remain soft," Rajni Thakur, chief economist at L&T Finance, said. "We really don't see this deflator support - which is statistically impacting real GDP numbers - going away till the end of this fiscal year." Economic activity as measured by gross value added (GVA) was estimated to have expanded 7.15 per cent. Nominal GDP growth, which is not adjusted for price changes, likely slowed to 8.3 per cent last quarter from 8.8 per cent previously, the poll predicted. Those are based on a smaller sample of forecasters. Meanwhile, recent cuts to the consumption tax, part of a major overhaul of the national goods and services tax (GST) system and implemented from September 22, are expected to give some support to demand in the coming quarters. "Unfortunately, GST cuts have come at a time when Indian households are already heavily indebted. That takes away part of the disposable income they could otherwise have saved from the tax reductions," said Dhiraj Nim, economist at ANZ.

Scott’s motivation for Aussie assault

Having missed last year’s Australian summer of golf, Scott is delighted to be back on home soil, with his first target being this week’s Australian PGA Championship at Royal Queensland, where he has the chance to claim a third Joe Kirkwood Cup. “I’m really happy to be home,” he said. “It was great to touch down a couple days ago, have a few nice coffees and catch up with some friends and family, and I’m excited for the week ahead OF playing at my boyhood home club. “It’s always fun to come back to Royal Queensland and relive my junior pennant days and memories like that, so hopefully there’s a little magic out on the course for me this week.” Scott has similar hopes for next week’s Australian Open at Royal Melbourne. “(With) some good some good results, I can really carry some momentum into next year, and that’s what I really haven’t had this year, so they are (two) big weeks for me,” the 45-year-old Queenslander said. “I want to play well in front of a home crowd but also carry a lot of momentum and confidence into next season and make the most of it.” Next year could be historic for Scott. Should he maintain his run of consecutive appearances at the majors, which numbers 97, the 2013 Masters champion will reach 100 successive majors at June’s US Open at Shinnecock Hills. “I’m starting to turn into that kind of old golf pro who’s out there,” he said. “I remember when I turned pro, and I looked at some of those guys who are my age now and how old I thought they were, and that’s me, but personally, I feel physically and mentally able to do it still. “Fortunately, I’m not in the aches and pains phase yet, and I’m really motivated, until I get to that point at least, to try and keep competing. “I really think I just need to sharpen my focus a little bit and get back in that winner’s circle.” A strong year will also help Scott achieve his goal of making a 12th consecutive International team for the Presidents Cup, which takes place in September at the Medinah Country Club in Chicago, Illinois. Scott is yet to taste a team Presidents Cup victory over the USA, and it’s something he’s desperate to change, with added motivation next year being that the International team will be captained by fellow Australian golfer and good friend Geoff Ogilvy. “Top on my list with winning tournaments is making the Presidents Cup team next year,” he said. “A lot has been put into the International team over the last few years. The team’s been dealt some tough blows the last three or four Cups, but Geoff’s really engaged and taking the bull by the horns for the international players. “I’d really love to be on that team. Geoff and I have played golf since we were juniors together, and I would love to get my game in shape to make that team and get that international win because I think it’s close.”

Security tightened in Ayodhya as Modi to hoist Ram Mandir flag

Ayodhya: Ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to hoist the sacred flag at the Ram Janmabhoomi Temple, extensive security arrangements have been put in place at all entry gates of the Ram Mandir. Special ‘prasad’ has also been delivered to the temple for the devotees expected to attend the flag-hoisting ceremony inside the premises. Apart from this, Ram Path in Ayodhya has also been beautifully decorated with flowers. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to visit Ayodhya for the ceremony. He is expected to arrive around 9:30 a.m., and locals say the moment symbolises the fulfilment of a centuries-old dream. The specially-designed flag for the temple, measuring 22 feet by 11 feet, marks the completion of the temple’s construction. Crafted by a parachute specialist from Ahmedabad, it weighs between two and three kilograms and is engineered to suit the 161-foot-high summit and the 42-foot flagpole. The flag will feature the Sun symbol, representing Lord Rama’s Suryavanshi lineage and divine energy. However, guests attending the ceremony will not be permitted to carry mobile phones inside the temple premises for security reasons. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath Tuesday said that India is witnessing a “golden chapter” in its civilizational journey as Prime Minister Narendra Modi prepares to hoist the grand saffron flag atop the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Temple in Ayodhya. The flag hoisting marks the formal completion of the temple’s construction and is being observed as a moment of deep cultural and spiritual significance across the country. Posting on X, the Chief Minister wrote, “Today, a golden chapter is about to be added to the history of faith, civilisation, and humanity. “In the sacred hands of the Honorable Prime Minister Shri @narendramodi ji and in the dignified presence of the esteemed Sarsanghchalak of @RSSorg, the revered Dr. Mohan Bhagwat ji, the grand saffron flag, symbolising our religious and cultural restoration, will be hoisted atop the pinnacle of the ‘Rashtra Mandir’ Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Temple, located at Shri Ayodhya Dham, the centre of faith and belief for India and countless followers of Sanatan Dharma.” Prime Minister Modi had laid the foundation stone for the Ram Mandir in August 2020, nearly a year after the Supreme Court handed over the 2.77-acre disputed land for the temple’s construction. He also presided over the consecration ceremony of the idol of Ram Lalla January 22, 2024. For the upcoming rituals, 108 Acharyas from Ayodhya, Kashi, and South India will perform the ceremonies under the guidance of noted Kashi scholar Ganeshwar Shastri. The day following the flag-hoisting event will offer an extended ‘darshan’ window of nearly 15–16 hours without any VIP movement, ensuring better access for pilgrims arriving later. ‘Darshan’ and ‘aarti’ passes can be booked through the Trust’s official portal, subject to availability. Visitors must submit ID details and download a QR-based digital pass. Booking may be temporarily paused around the event due to security protocols. Authorities have advised travellers to arrive in Ayodhya a day in advance to avoid congestion. Public transport and shuttle services are encouraged, and visitors are urged to carry minimal luggage. Continuous updates regarding crowd management and route advisories will be issued through official channels.

Drone strikes force Naga outfits to deny camps to ULFA(I), outfit faces fresh setback

Guwahati, Nov 25: In a fresh setback to ULFA(I), Naga outfits have expressed reluctance to share their camps with the militant organisation's members. This comes in the backdrop of a series of drone attacks by security forces on Northeast insurgent camps in Myanmar border areas. The strikes had specifically and precisely targeted the ULFA(I). ULFA (I) militants have been using the camps of NSCN-K-YA as well as those of the Ang Mai faction. These Naga outfits have around 30 camps-both small and big-in the Sagaing region of Myanmar. "While moving to and fro, ULFA(I) militants stay in these camps of Naga outfits. But now, following the drone strikes, they are reluctant to share their camps for their own security. ULFA(I) has sought time for finding new locations," sources privy to the development said. "The strategic and tactical alliance between ULFA(I) and the Naga groups will, however, remain unaffected," they said. It is learnt that there is also pressure from the Naga civil society organisations on the rebel groups, citing security concerns. The first drone attack on the ULFA(I) camps were carried out in July, which targeted the 'Diamond Camp' near Hoyat village (Myanmar) and the 'central mobile headquarters' (779) located in the Waktham area across the border pillar No. 173. The Naga groups also reported to have suffered losses in the attacks. The ULFA(I) camp in Hoyat is located in the vicinity of NSCN/K-Ang Mai camp. ULFA(I) is now trying to set up a new base near the earlier Hoyat camp, it is learnt. The drone strikes and regular military action to snap supply lines have left the outfit logistically challenged. Besides the two camps that were hit, the ULFA(I) also has the Arakan Camp' co-located with Yung Aung's Lenghon camp near Lahon in Nanyun township (a joint camp with PLA, UNLF/Koireng) and another at Hakhi in the Pangsau area. Following the drone strikes and surrenders, the strength of the outfit is said to be below 200. After the withdrawal of Myanmarese army from Taga, the insurgent groups, including those of Manipur and Nagaland, are reportedly trying to revive their erstwhile bases in the neighbouring country.

Tata Capital primed for strong growth, bank-like returns, says IIFL Capital

IIFL Capital on Tata Capital: Domestic brokerage IIFL Capital has initiated coverage on Tata Capital Ltd (TCL), the flagship financial services arm of the Tata Group, noting that the AAA-rated lender has rapidly scaled to become India’s third-largest non-banking financial company (NBFC) with an asset under management (AUM) base of ₹2.4 trillion. The brokerage highlighted that TCL’s broad product suite, presence across customer income and geographic segments, and its deeply scaled distribution, technology, underwriting and operations infrastructure position it to grow at a pace comparable to leading NBFCs such as Bajaj Finance (BAF) and Cholamandalam Investment & Finance (CIFC). Yet, its profitability profile and asset-quality stability already resemble that of the best private-sector banks. The company’s well-balanced loan book, with a retail-non-retail mix of 60:40, enables it to deliver private-bank-like return on assets (ROA) and credit-cost outcomes, despite retail loan yields that are broadly in line with other NBFCs. TCL’s disciplined and risk-calibrated expansion is evident from its decision to moderate growth around 18 months ago. In this period, its higher-risk segments, personal loans, business loans and microfinance, expanded at just 8 per cent CAGR, compared with 10-25 per cent for peers including BAF and CIFC. CATCH STOCK MARKET LIVE UPDATES TODAY IIFL Capital expects TCL’s ~15 per cent valuation discount to CIFC to narrow as the company delivers sector-leading earnings momentum. TCL is projected to post a robust 31 per cent earnings per share (EPS) compound annual growth rate (CAGR) over FY25-28, supported by a 60-basis-point (bps) improvement in ROA to around 2.3 per cent. Key drivers include improving net interest margins (NIMs) on account of portfolio mix, scaling of non-lending businesses, operating leverage benefits and a turnaround in subsidiary TMFL. With more than 25 products, a diversified AUM profile and around 1 per cent overall credit market share (1.3 per cent in retail; mortgages accounting for nearly half), the brokerage believes TCL has a long runway for sustained high growth. Given its scale and consistent performance, five-year AUM CAGR of 21 per cent and average ROA/ROE of 1.9 per cent/15 per cent, IIFL Capital has initiated coverage with a ‘Buy’ rating and a target price of ₹410 (29 per cent upside), implying 2-year forward PB/PE of 3.0x/21x and underscoring TCL’s potential to sustain a ~50 per cent EPS growth premium over private banks through FY26-28. Disclaimer: Target price and stock outlook has been suggested by IIFL Capital. Views expressed are their own.

In one of the biggest bombshells of the year, Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris were disqualified and stripped of points following a review of the team’s cars after Sunday’s Las Vegas Grand Prix, won by Max Verstappen. It wasn’t until after midnight local time that the FIA confirmed the constructors’ world champion-outfit had breached technical regulations. In layman’s terms, the team was busted running its cars too low to the ground in an attempt to gain superior downforce. This resulted in both MCL39 cars bottoming out significantly enough during the race to cause damage beyond the acceptable level to its plank. Accusations and conspiracy theories spread across cyberspace on Monday with suggestions the team had used “coded messages” when communicating on team radio in an attempt to divert attention away from its plank problems. Copied URL to clipboard The team is yet to make any public comment since it released a statement on Sunday night where team principal Andrea Stella apologised to Piastri and Norris for the technical error. F1 commentators have now divulged further details about the radio messages sent by Norris, Piastri and the teams’ race engineers. At no point during the race did the team mention any concerns about degradation to its plank. Messages shared by Norris and race engineer Will Joseph have set tongues wagging. Norris and Piastri were repeatedly reminded throughout the race to lift off the accelerator before coasting into Turns 5, 11 and 17 on the Vegas street circuit to avoid potential plank damage. Championship leader Norris gave a sassy response to Joseph on Lap 42 after he’d been told to “overtake” when trying unsuccessfully to challenge Verstappen for the race lead. Some commentators have suggested Norris’ cryptic comment on Lap 42 referred to the team’s attempt to do what was necessary to avoid damaging the car’s plank. “Let’s do whatever we’ve got to do to…. Just tell me what I gotta do,” he said. Joseph responded: “Well in that case, do more”. The vague instructions on team radio — mixed with Norris’ sudden lap time drop-off — raised the eyebrows of commentators with Sky Sports pundits assuming the drastic performance decline was a deliberate strategy to conserve fuel. Oscar Piastri leaves the pits. Photo: Cristobal Herrera Ulashkevich/Pool Photo via AP) Norris was on Lap 45 just 5.5 seconds behind the Verstappen, but he crossed the finish line on Lap 50 more than 20 seconds behind the reigning world champ. One of the last messages given to Norris on team radio was “the fuel looks OK now”. Leading F1 analysts Peter Windsor, Jon Noble and Scott Mitchell-Malm have all speculated there may have been more to the messages sent. Noble told The Race F1 podcast McLaren would have first seen evidence of plank concerns during the reconnaissance laps before the race. “One team boss suggested to me – because all the teams are listening in on everyone else’s radio messages and observing what they’re all doing – their observation was that the first evidence of lift and coast and looking after the plank was as early as the way onto the grid and those early laps,” he said. “We haven’t got all the answers yet, but that’s as deep as it was.” Leading F1 journalist Mitchell-Malm noted on the podcast that Piastri was not sent as many messages about the need to lift and coast into those specific corners. This is despite the Australian being found to have committed the most severe breach with plank wear of 0.126mm compared to his teammate’s 0.12mm. “So that looks a little bit weird,” Mitchell-Malm said. “I suspect that’s a function of Norris was doing that management over the last four laps or so whereas Piastri would have just taken more out of it as the race went on.” The pot of intrigue has been further fuelled by both journalists saying sources have informed them that both McLaren cars were “marginal” for potential plank wear breaches during the Brazilian Grand Prix this month. Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris. Photo by Chris Graythen/Getty Images) “There was an intriguing message from Lando Norris when he was battling George Russell late in that race where he says, ‘Do you want me to keep using DRS, or do you want me to overtake’,” he said. “So I wonder if that was a clue about, ‘Do you want me to manage the plank and avoid me wearing it away too much or do you want me to go on’. And they gave him the message to push on and get after Max. So there is that.” He even speculated the team may have potentially elected not to give Piastri the same messages in an attempt to hide the team’s concerns about its cars. He said there is no suggestion that McLaren had acted “deviously” because that is how all F1 teams operate to avoid giving away information. “McLaren I don’t think overtly lied or tried to mislead everyone by saying fuel’s really marginal,“ he said on the podcast. “I think what they might well have been doing was trying to avoid it really being broadcast that there was a marginal plank limitation here, because the technical checks after the race do change. “It isn’t always the same and it’s different checks on different cars and there’s different amounts of cars that get checked. So being marginal, McLaren might have quite sensibly been trying to avoid an obvious plank problem that might have just encouraged one of the checks to be a plank check. Oscar Piastri's car scraping the track on Lap 16. Photo: Reddit, Formula 1. “Piastri was running outside the top 3, maybe McLaren thought it was less likely that his car would be checked. He was less vulnerable to that sort of thing even if it was marginal. These are all questions that are valid to ask when you have a race that plays out that way. “The messages that are and aren’t delivered. That’s the thing. Piastri wasn’t getting the same level of urgency that Norris was clearly, otherwise he’d have fallen away by 15-odd seconds as well.” Leading F1 analyst Windsor, who has been around Formula 1 as an insider for more than 40 years, told the F1 Hour podcast the way the team acted “doesn’t make any sense”. “The whole thing was very odd,” he said. “A – the damage was done much earlier. B – why did Will Joseph say we’ve got through the fuel issue now. And C – What was Lando trying to achieve by doing that? “The whole thing was very odd. There’s a lot of unanswered questions in that. “If fuel was just a ruse – and McLaren were really just worried about the ride height, well why would Will Joseph say, ‘We’re OK now’. It doesn’t make any sense either.” He raised another theory that McLaren may have somehow found a way to put a data sensor on its plank. “Do McLaren have some sort of sensor which actually tells them what the ride height is at the back that tells them what’s going on? If they do. Amazing. Absolutely amazing,” he said. “I doubt it. But they might have. And maybe that’s what Lando was driving in accordance.” Norris was the biggest loser of the disqualifications, which have kept Piastri’s faint championship hopes alive. Imposed 1983 Assam elections triggered violence, communal divide: Mehta Commission

Guwahati, Nov 25: Imposing elections against the wishes of the people was one of the main reasons for large-scale violence in Assam in 1983. The Justice Mehta Com-mission made this observation in an enquiry into the incidents of violence in the State. The Commission pointed out that, as the people were not cooperating with the election process, officers from out-side had to be brought in to conduct the elections, and even the ballot papers were printed outside. A large number of security personnel had to be deployed. The State and Central Governments were fully aware of the fact that the situation in the State was not conducive, but elections were imposed because the party in power at the Centre wanted to grab power by hook or crook. The Election Commission should have stopped the large-scale violence by not holding the polls because of the prevailing situation, but the EC also failed to do so, which resulted not only in violence but also created mistrust among different sections of people of the State. The report said that the electoral rolls were not correct. With the Assam agitation going on in full swing, holding of elections without correcting the electoral rolls was bound to receive stiff resistance, and that was exactly what had happened. Members of the EC visited the State before the election, but they could not visit all places. They could only visit Guwahati and "some near-by places." No one knows the "nearby places" the EC members had visited. The report pointed out that the Centre was fully aware of the consequences of holding elections in such a situation. That is why the number of jails, including temporary jails, was set up, and a large number of forces were deployed. The Government acted in a draconian manner and tortured the people opposing the elections. The Government even arrested the top leaders of the AASU before the elections, and such actions angered the Assamese people. The AASU and All Assam Gana Sangram Parishad had called upon the people to boycott the elections, but members of Congress(I) were determined to contest the polls. Some Congress (I) members even went to the extent of telling the suspected immigrants that if they voted for Congress (I), no one would be able to deport them from India, and they would get the rights of an Indian citizen. On the other hand, those opposing the polls burned down some primary schools, which were to be used as polling stations. The then Railway Minister had also given very inflammatory speeches. In one meeting, he said, "If they kill one, we will kill three." Such speeches by a Muslim Minister also made the situation very volatile. Moreover, the imposed elections and the situations thereafter made the communal divide very deep-rooted. It may be mentioned here that the Justice Mehta Commission was formed by the Assam State Freedom Fighters Association and it is likely to be tabled in the State Assembly tomorrow.

Panel unites for strong climate pitch

Bhubaneswar: Arun Krishnamurthy, environmentalist and founder of the Environmental Foundation of India (EFI), moderated a panel discussion on “Climate Change: Finding Solutions.” The panel featured Kartik Shanker, ecologist and founder-trustee of the Dakshin Foundation; Meet Sijariya, VC–Partnerships & Stakeholders at the Youth Climate Change Network (CYCN); Debabrata Swain, former PCCF and Lokayukta member of Odisha; and Adyasha Satpathy, Chief Executive of Dharitri and Orissa Post. Krishnamurthy praised the conclave for providing a unique platform that fosters collaboration between young changemakers and environmental experts. He emphasised that such initiatives are vital for driving collective action on climate solutions. Kartik Shanker underscored Odisha’s ecological importance, especially its role as a key nesting site for Olive Ridley turtles. He shared encouraging news that over 10 lakh turtles have nested in the state this year, crediting sustained conservation efforts for the positive outcome. Debabrata Swain expressed concern over the state’s forest resources, stressing the need for stronger protection amid growing pressures from mining activities. He cautioned that Odisha risks the extinction of its elephant population if urgent conservation measures are not undertaken. Meet Sijariya highlighted the awareness gap between urban youth and those at the grassroots, underscoring the importance of platforms like the Youth Conclave in fostering deeper understanding and engagement on climate issues. On the occasion, nine young voices from educational institutions across Odisha took the stage, sharing their innovative climate strategies and underscoring the importance of youth-led environmental action. Their presentations highlighted the potential for change when young people are empowered to act. Adyasha Satpathy spoke about the annual Youth Conclave, mentioning that Dharitri has been covering positive climate stories and the work of climate activists for many years. Through this coverage, they connected with grassroots activists, which led to the idea of creating a platform for environmentalists and youth to come together, share experiences, and connect with each other in the fight against climate change. Satpathy emphasised that finding a solution to the climate crisis can’t be done by a single community alone; rather, it requires collective action from all. Chami Murmu, after receiving a Lifetime Achievement Award, expressed her gratitude to Dharitri for recognising her work. She shared that she has been working on afforestation for over 30 years. Starting at a young age, she was alone in her efforts, but she gradually gathered people to plant trees and raise awareness despite opposition and threats. Today, her initiative, “Sahayogi Mahila Bagraisai”, has thousands of people involved. In addition to tree plantation, they have empowered women to become independent.
